Adverse events related to physical restraint use in intensive care units: A review of the literature

Physical restraints are widely used and accepted as protective measures during treatment in intensive care unit (iCU). This review of the literature summa.izes the adverse events and outcomes associated with physical restraint use, and the risk factors associated with their use during treatment in the iCU. The PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases were screened using predefined search terms to identify studies pertaining to adverse events and/or outcomes associated with physical restraint use, and the factors associated with their use in adult pa.ients admitted to the iCU. A total of 24 articles (including 6126 pa.ients) that were published between 2006 and 2022 were identified. The described adverse events associated with physical restraint use included skin injuries, subsequent delirium, neurofunctional impairment, and a higher rate of post-trauma.ic stress disorder. Subsequent delirium was the most frequent adverse event to be reported. No alterna.ive measures to physical restraints were discussed, and only one study reported a standardized protocol for their use. Although physical restraint use has been reported to be associated with adverse events (including neurofunctional impairment) in the literature, the available evidence is limited. Although causa.ity cannot be confirmed, a definite associa.ion appears to exist. Our findings suggest that it is essential to improve awareness regarding their adverse impact and optimize approaches for their detection, management, and prevention using protocols or checklists.

Development of endemicity and conserva.ion importance indices for tropical forests and the floral diversity assessment of *** in Benguet,Philippines

The scientific community faces the challenge of measuring progress toward biodiversity targets and indices have been tra.itionally ***,recent inventories in secondary tropical mountain forests using tra.itional biodiversity indices have yielded results that are indistinct with primary *** shows the need to develop complementary indices that goes beyond species count but integrates the distribution and conserva.ion status of the *** study developed endemicity and conserva.ion importance index for tropical forest that incorporated the distribution and conserva.ion status of the *** indices were applied to ***,a remnant primary mossy forest in Buguias,Benguet,Philippines,that resulted to endemicity index of 81.07 and conserva.ion importance index of *** these with secondary forest sites with comparable Shannon-Wiener,Simpson,Evenness and Margalef’s indices,our endemicity and conserva.ion indices clearly differentiates primary forest(our study site)with higher values from secondary forests with much lower ***,we are proposing these indices for a direct but scientifically-informed identifica.ion of specific sites for conserva.ion and protection in tropical ***,our study documented a total of 168 vascular plant species(79 endemic and 12 locally threatened species)in *** are of tropical elements for both generic and species levels with some temperate elements that could be attributed to the site's high eleva.ion and semi-temperate *** are important baseline informa.ion for conserva.ion plans and monitoring of tropical mossy forests.

Understanding the Theory of Karp, Miller and Winograd

The objective of this tutorial is to present the fundamental theory of Karp, Miller and Winograd, whose seminal paper laid the founda.ions regarding the systema.ic description of the orga.iza.ion of computa.ions in systems of uniform recurrent equa.ions by means of graph structures, via the definition of computa.ility conditions and techniques for the construction of one-dimensional and multi-dimensional scheduling functions. Besides the description of this theory, the paper presents improvements and revisions made by other authors and furthermore, points out the differences regarding the conditions of causa.ity and dependency between the general case of systems of recurrent equa.ions and the special case of multiple nested loops.

Ba.illus thuringiensis(Bt)cotton production is challenged by two main problems,i.e.,the low concentra.ion of Bt protein at the boll setting stage and the lowest insect resistance in bolls among all the cotton plant’s ***,increa.ing the Bt protein concentra.ion at the boll stage,especially in bolls,has become the main goal for increa.ing insect resistance in *** this study,two protein degrada.ion inhibitors(ethylene dia.ine tetra acetic a.id(EDTA)and leupeptin)were sprayed on the bolls,subtending leaves,and whole cotton plants at the peak flowering stage of two Bt cultivars(medium matura.ion Sikang 1(SK1))and early matura.ion Zhongmian 425(ZM425)in 2019 and *** Bt protein content and protein degrada.ion metabolism were *** results showed that the Bt protein concentra.ions were enhanced by 21.3 to 38.8%and 25.0 to 38.6%in the treated bolls of SK1 and ZM425 respectively,while they were decreased in the subtending leaves of these treated *** the treated leaves,the Bt protein concentra.ions increased by 7.6 to 23.5%and 11.2 to 14.9%in SK1 and ZM425,*** combined applica.ion of EDTA and leupeptin to the whole cotton plant increased the Bt protein concentra.ions in both bolls and subtending *** Bt protein concentra.ions in bolls were higher,increa.ing by 22.5 to 31.0%and 19.6 to 32.5%for SK1 and ZM425,*** organs treated with EDTA or/and leupeptin showed reduced free a.ino a.id contents,protease and peptidase activities and significant enhancements in soluble protein *** results indicated that inhibiting protein degrada.ion could improve the protein content,thus increa.ing the Bt protein concentra.ions in the bolls or/and leaves of cotton ***,the increase in the Bt protein concentra.ion without yield reduction suggested that these two protein degrada.ion inhibitors may be applicable for improving insect resistance in cotton production.

introduction: igG4 disease is an orphan, fibro-inflammatory autoimmune disease of recent discovery whose thora.ic involvement is rarer. We report a case of Pulmonary and orbital bifocal igG4 disease with a review of the literature. Observa.ion: This is a 71-year-old pa.ient with a history of hypertension, dyslipidemia, smoking cessa.ion at 15 PA, with progressive dyspnoea, weight loss of 4 kg with PS = 0 for 2 months. The thora.ic CT scan revealed 3 pseudotumoral lung lesions of the LiG, LiD and LM. The histology of the two CT-guided lung biopsies and the LiG wedge had objectified inflammatory lesions without signs of ma.ignancy. The evolution was marked by the occurrence of a right orbital edema. The cerebral scanner found a voluminous right orbital inflammatory pseudotumor. Biopsy with histology found fibroinflammatory lesions with lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates and positive immunolabeling with anti-igG4 antibodies. The PET scanner had objectified pulmonary and pleural parenchymal consolida.ions and moderately hypermetabolic mediastinal ADP with max SUV between 3 and 6. The pa.ient was put on corticosteroid therapy with a favorable outcome. Conclusion: igG4 disease is rare and difficult to diagnose despite well-defined and consensual diagnostic criteria and classifica.ion. The discovery of new biomarkers fa.ilitates the diagnosis and monitoring of pa.ients. Well-codified corticosteroid therapy is effective but possibility of recurrence. The current challenge remains the lack of data on the follow-up of these pa.ients to assess the risk of neopla.ia (lymphoma).
