StochSD: A Full Potential CSS Language for Dynamic and Stochastic Modelling, Simulation and Statistical Analysis

It is vital that a well-defined conceptual model can be realized by a macro-model (e.g., a Continuous System Simulation (CSS) model) or a micro-model (e.g., an Agent-Based model or Discrete Event Simulation model) and still produce mutually consistent results. The Full Potential CSS concept provides the rules so that the results from macro-modelling become fully consistent with those from micro-modelling. This paper focuses on the simulation language StochSD (Stochastic System Dynamics), which is an extension of classical Continuous System Simulation that implements the Full Potential CSS concept. Thus, in addition to modelling and simulating continuous flows between compartments represented by “real” numbers, it can also handle transitions of discrete entities by integer numbers, enabling combined models to be constructed in a straight-forward way. However, transition events of discrete entities (e.g., arrivals, accidents, deaths) usually happen irregularly over time, so stochasticity often plays a crucial role in their modelling. Therefore, StochSD contains powerful random functions to model uncertainties of different kinds, together with devices to collect statistics during a simulation or from multiple replications of the same stochastic model. Also, tools for sensitivity analysis, optimisation and statistical analysis are included. In particular, StochSD includes features for stochastic modelling, post-analysis of multiple simulations, and presentation of the results in statistical form. In addition to making StochSD a Full Potential CSS language, a second purpose is to provide an open-source package intended for small and middle-sized models in education, self-studies and research. To make StochSD and its philosophy easy to comprehend and use, it is based on the System Dynamics approach, where a system is described in terms of stocks and flows. Metabolic collaboration between cells in the tumor microenvironment has a negligible effect on tumor growth

The tumor microenvironment is composed of a complex mixture of different cell types interacting under conditions of nutrient deprivation,but the metabolism therein is not fully understood due to difficulties in measuring metabolic fluxes and exchange of metabolites between different cell types in ***-scale metabolic modeling enables estimation of such exchange fluxes as well as an opportunity to gain insight into the metabolic behavior of individual cell ***,we estimated the availability of nutrients and oxygen within the tumor microenvironment using concentration measurements from blood together with a metabolite diffusion *** addition,we developed an approach to efficiently apply enzyme usage constraints in a comprehensive metabolic model of human *** combined modeling reproduced severe hypoxic conditions and the Warburg effect,and we found that limitations in enzymatic capacity contribute to cancer cells’preferential use of glutamine as a substrate to the citric acid ***,we investigated the common hypothesis that some stromal cells are exploited by cancer cells to produce metabolites useful for the cancer *** identified over 200 potential metabolites that could support collaboration between cancer cells and cancer-associated fibroblasts,but when limiting to metabolites previously identified to participate in such collaboration,no growth advantage was *** work highlights the importance of enzymatic capacity limitations for cell behaviors and exemplifies the utility of enzyme-constrained models for accurate prediction of metabolism in cells and tumor microenvironments.

The high intensity and high energy antiproton beams which will be produced at FAIR open the possibility to determine time-like electromagnetic form factors in a wide kinematical range, through the annihilation reaction： p ＋ p → e^＋＋ e^-. The status of the proposed experiment as well as the expected results are presented on the basis of realistic simulations. The impact of these measurements on the understanding of the nucleon structure, of the asymptotic properties of form factors and of the reaction mechanism are discussed using model independent statements based on symmetry properties of the strong and electromagnetic interactions in connection with space-like data.

Modeling of shear walls using finite shear connector elements based on continuum plasticity

Light-frame timber buildings are often stabilized against lateral loads by using diaphragm action of roofs, floors and walls. The mechanical behavior of the sheathing-to-framing joints has a significant impact on the structural performance of shear walls. Most sheathing-to-framing joints show nonlinear load-displacement characteristics with plastic behavior. This paper is focused on the finite element modeling of shear walls. The purpose is to present a new shear connector element based on the theory of continuum plasticity. The incremental load-displacement relationship is derived based on the elastic-plastic stiffness tensor including the elastic stiffness tensor, the plastic modulus, a function representing the yield criterion and a hardening rule, and function representing the plastic potential. The plastic properties are determined from experimental results obtained from testing actual connections. Load-displacement curves for shear walls are calculated using the shear connector model and they are compared with experimental and other computational results. Also, the ultimate horizontal load-carrying capacity is compared to results obtained by an analytical plastic design method. Good agreements are found.

High level of deoxycholic acid in human bile does not promote cholesterol gallstone formation

AIM:To study whether patients with excess deoxycholic acid (DCA) differ from those with normal percentage of DCA with respect to biliary lipid composition and cholesterol saturation of gallbladder bile. METHODS:Bile was collected during operation through puncturing into the gallbladder from 122 cholesterol gallstone patients and 46 gallstone-free subjects undergoing *** data,biliary lipids,bile add composition, presence of crystals and nucleation time were analyzed. RESULTS:A subgroup of gallstone patients displayed a higher proportion of DCA in bile than gallstone free subjects. By choosing a cut-off level of the 90th percentile,a group of 13 gallstone patients with high DCA levels (mean 50 percent of total bile acids) and a large group of 109 patients with normal DCA levels (mean 21 percent of total bile acids) were *** mean age of the patients with high DCA levels was higher than that of the group with normal levels (mean age:62 years vs45 years) and so was the mean BMI (28.3 vs.24.7).Plasma levels of cholesterol and triglycerides were slightly higher in the DCA excess groups compared with those in the normal DCA *** was no difference in biliary lipid composition,cholesterol saturation,nucleation time or occurrence of cholesterol crystals in bile between patients with high and normal levels of DCA. CONCLUSION:Gallstone patients with excess DCA were of older age and had higher BMI than patients with normal *** two groups of patients did not differ with respect to biliary lipid composition,cholesterol saturation,nucleation time or occurrence of cholesterol *** is concluded that DCA in bile does not seem to contribute to gallstone formation in cholesterol gallstone patients.

Experimental analysis of tip vortex cavitation mitigation by controlled surface roughness

This study presents results of experiments where roughness applications are evaluated in delaying the tip vortex cavitation inception of an elliptical ***-speed video recordings and laser doppler velocimetry(LDV)measurements are employed to provide further details on the cavitation behavior and tip vortex flow properties in different roughness pattern *** angular momentum measurements of the vortex core region at one chord length downstream of the tip indicate that roughness leads to a lower angular momentum compared with the smooth foil condition while the vortex core radius remains similar in the smooth and roughened *** observations show that the cavitation number for tip vortex cavitation inception is reduced by 33%in the optimized roughness pattern compared with the smooth foil condition where the drag force increase is observed to be around 2%.During the tests,no obvious differences in the cavitation inception properties of uniform and non-uniform roughness distributions are ***,the drag force is found to be higher with a non-uniform roughness distribution.

Self-employment in Rural China:Its Development,Characteristics,and Relation to Income

Changes in the employment structure in rural China were studied with a focus on off-farm *** from the Chinese Household Income Project surveys were used,covering the same 14 provinces from 1988 to *** found that the proportion of adults in rural China with self-employment as their primary form of off-farm employment increased from only 2 percent in 1988 to 11 percent in 2013,with no further increases through *** 1988 and 1995,the rate of self-employment was highest in the eastern region but this regional pattern subsequently *** probability of being self-employed in rural China was higher among married males than among unmarried *** a migration experience increased the likelihood of being *** 1995,self-employed households have had a higher average income than other categories of *** on estimates of income functions,we conclude that the income premium from being self-employed increased rapidly from 1988 to 1995 to become remarkably large when only a few adults were ***,as a larger fraction of the rural population entered self-employment,the payoff from being self-employed has rapidly diminished,although it was still substantial in 2018.
