Quasi-static and dynamic compressive behaviour of additively manufactured Menger fractal cube structures

This paper presents the first-ever investigation of Menger fractal cubes'quasi-static compression and impact *** cubes with different void ratios were 3D printed using polylactic acid(PLA)with dimensions of 40 mm×40 mm×40 *** different orders of Menger cubes with different void ratios were considered,namely M1 with a void ratio of 0.26,M2 with a void ratio of 0.45,and M3with a void ratio of ***-static Compression tests were conducted using a universal testing machine,while the drop hammer was used to observe the behaviour under impact *** fracture mechanism,energy efficiency and force-time histories were *** the structured nature of the void formation and predictability of the failure modes,the Menger geometry showed some promise compared to other alternatives,such as foams and *** the increasing void ratio,the Menger geometries show force-displacement behaviour similar to hyper-elastic materials such as rubber and *** third-order Menger cubes showed the highest energy absorption efficiency compared to the other two geometries in this *** findings of the present work reveal the possibility of using additively manufactured Menger geometries as an energy-efficient system capable of reducing the transmitting force in applications such as crash barriers.

Incidental diagnosis of medullary thyroid carcinoma due to persistently elevated procalcitonin in a patient with COVID-19 pneumonia:A case report

BACKGROUND Procalcitonin(Pct)is a common biomarker in clinical practice,especially in the era of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)*** it is frequently used for the diagnosis and prognostication of bacterial infections or sepsis,it is also elevated in a few other conditions,including medullary thyroid carcinoma(MTC).CASE SUMMARY A 43-year-old female presented with moderately severe COVID-19 pneumonia in April *** gradually recovered clinically;however,despite normalization of other inflammatory markers,Pct levels remained persistently *** workup identified the cause as left lobe MTC with locoregional *** levels were high,and carcinoembryonic antigen levels were *** patient underwent total thyroidectomy and neck dissection,which was followed by another radical neck dissection due to residual ***,she is doing well,nearly having completed her course of external beam radiotherapy with no *** is well documented as a screening tool for MTC,especially because of its stable nature compared to calcitonin in the community *** is important to keep in mind the differential diagnosis of MTC in patients with persistently elevated Pct levels despite normal levels of other acute phase *** the best of our knowledge,this is the first report from Asia of such an incidental diagnosis of MTC due to persistently elevated Pct levels in a patient with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)*** Persistently elevated Pct levels can occur in any pro-inflammatory state including infections,sepsis,or acute respiratory distress *** the current setting,SARS-CoV-2 infection is one such clinical scenario,and in rare situations of persistent elevation,MTC may need to be ruled out.

Preparation of Antimicrobial Iron Oxide Nanostructures from Galvanizing Effluent

Galvanization is the process of applying a protective zinc coating to iron or steel to prevent rusting. In the batch hot-dip galvanizing process, large amounts of wastes originate in liquid, solid and gaseous forms. Acidic waste containing iron and zinc ions is produced due to the cleaning of steel prior to zinc coating, which is considered the galvanizing acid waste. The galvanizing effluent used was collected from LTL Galvanizers Pvt. Ltd., Sapugaskanda, Sri Lanka, and converted into antimicrobial hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanoparticles. These nanoparticles were synthesized using a chemical precipitation method. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the nanomaterials produced. Two pathogenic bacteria and one pathogenic fungus were used to analyze the antimicrobial activity of the nanomaterials. All the samples showed excellent antibacterial and antifungal properties. And the material can inhibit the growth of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. According to the SEM images, some of the hematite particles were around 100 nm in size or less, which confirms that the describing method is viable in synthesizing hematite nanostructures. As shown in the XRD, the major diffraction peak, located at 2θ of 35.617° (110) in addition to minor peaks at 24.87° (012), 33.07° (104), 42.08° (113), 51.18° (024), 53.52° (116) and, 57.46° (018) confirm the spinel structure of iron oxide (α-Fe2O3). The estimated average crystallite size of the nanomaterial is calculated to be 36.74 nm. The durability of the manufactured nanomaterial is excellent. This method is a time-efficient, environmentally friendly, cost-effective and industrially viable way to manufacture antimicrobial hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanomaterials from a galvanizing effluent.
