Background Over the last two decades,umbilical cord blood(UCB)and haploidentical transplantation(HaploHSCT)have emerged as alternative sources of hematopoietic stem cell for allogeneic *** are few retrospective studies and no prospective studies comparing both types of alternative transplantation in pediatric *** We analyzed the data of 134 children with hematological malignancies who received a hematopoietic stem cell transplantation from a single umbilical cord blood(UCB)(n=42)or an"tex-vivo"T-cell depleted transplant from a haploi-dentical-related donor(HaploHSCT)(n=92)between 1996 and *** recovery was faster after HaploHSCT than the UCB transplant group(median times to neutrophil and platelet recovery:13 vs.16 days,10 vs.57 days,respectively)(P<0.001).The HaploHSCT group had a significantly early immune reconstitution based on NK and CD8+T cells compared with the UCB ***,after the first year *** had a lower number of CD4+ T and B lymphocytes compared with the UCB transplant *** cumulative incidence of TRM was 29±8%in the HaploHSCT group versus 40±5%in the UCB *** incidence was 21±7%in the HaploHSCT group and 19±8%in the UCB *** of DFS was 58±8%in the HaploHSCT group versus 40±9%in the UCB group(P=0.051).Conclusions TCD haploidentical transplant is associated with advantages in terms of engraftment and early immune reconstitution *** haploidentical transplant was associated with lower incidence of infectious and non-infectious complications,especially in the early phases of the transplant compared with UCB transplant ***,there are no advantages in transplant outcomes compared with UCB transplant.

AIM： To evaluate rational and experiential intelligence in irritable bowel syndrome （IBS） sufferers. METHODS： We recruited 100 subjects with IBS as per Rome 11 criteria （50 consulters and 50 non-consulters） and 100 healthy controls, matched by age, sex and educational level. Cases and controls completed a clinical questionnaire （including symptom characteristics and medical consultation） and the following tests： rational- intelligence （Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, 3rd edition）; experiential-intelligence （Constructive Thinking Inventory）; personality （NEO personality inventory）; psychopathology （MMPI-2）, anxiety （state-trait anxiety inventory） and life events （social readjustment rating scale）. Analysis of variance was used to compare the test results of IBS-sufferers and controls, and a logistic regression model was then constructed and adjusted for age, sex and educational level to evaluate any possible association with IBS. RESULTS： No differences were found between IBS cases and controls in terms of IQ （102.0 ± 10.8 vs 102.8 ± 12.6）, but IBS sufferers scored significantly lower in global constructive thinking （43.7± 9.4 vs 49.6 ± 9.7）. In the logistic regression model, global constructive thinking score was independently linked to suffering from IBS [OR 0.92 （0.87-0.97）], without significant OR for total IQ. CONCLUSION： IBS subjects do not show lower rational intelligence than controls, but lower experiential intelligence is nevertheless associated with IBS.

Purpose: The main objective was to analyze the relationship between maximum cup depth (MCD), mean defect (MD), central corneal thickness (CCT), age and disc area, in patients with ocular hypertension (OHT) and primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). Methods: Cross-sectional study of patients diagnosed with OHT and POAG. Visual fields were obtained using an Octopus 300 analyzer, TOP strategy. MCD and disc area were obtained using a Heidelberg Retina Tomograph. Results: The study sample comprised 234 eyes of 143 patients, 91 women and 52 men, mean age 63.55 years (SD 10.49). Mean values were: MCD 0.52 mm (SD 0.27), MD 2.78 dB (SD 5.02), CCT 543.5 μm (SD 36.63), IOP 16.73 mmHg (SD 2.93), and disc area 2.01 mm2 (SD 0.39). A significant correlation was observed between MCD and age in patients under 60 years, between MCD and disc area, and between MD and disc area. Conclusions: Our study showed a correlation between MCD and age which was significant in patients under 60 years of age, between MCD and disc area and between MD and disc area, suggesting that the larger the disc area, the greater the MCD and the MD in patients with OHT and POAG.

The genetically heterogeneous NIH-HS rat stock has been characterized by its response to anxiety- and fear-inducing situations, thus leading to the conclusion that they are a rather anxious and passive coping type of rats. Taking advantage of these profiles, and knowing that they show very poor performance in the two-way active (shuttle box) escape/avoidance task, we have tested NIH-HS rats (n = 80) in the forced swimming test (FST) as well as we have studied escape response deficits (i.e. response failures) of the same animals in the two-way shuttle box task. They were also tested for anxiety in the elevated zero-maze. The goal of such a study was that of investigating whether there are associations or relationships among helplessness-like or passive coping responses between both models of depression, i.e. the FST and the helplessness-like escape deficits in the shuttle box task. The results for the first time show associations among responses from both depression models and that selecting rats for displaying extreme (active or passive) responses in one of the models predict in a coherent manner (according to the hypothesis) their behaviour in the other model. These findings are discussed in the context of the concurrent validity of both models of depression as well as concerning the possible relevance of NIH-HS rats as a tool for future studies on this field.

The “National Institutes of Health” genetically heterogeneous (NIH-HS) rat stock was created in the 1980s through an eight-way cross of as much as possible separate inbred rat strains (i.e. the MR/N, WN/N, WKY/N, M520/N, F344/N, ACI/N, BN/SsN and BUF/N strains) which were readily available at that time. Hansen and Spuhler [1] developed a more naturalistic, genetically heterogeneous rat stock with the aim of optimizing the distribution of genotypic frequencies and recombination and under the hypothesis that the NIH-HS stock could yield a broad-range distribution of responses (broader than commonly used laboratory rat strains) to experimental conditions, and thus serve as a base population for selection studies. Along the last decade, in a series of studies we have phenotypically characterized the NIH-HS rat stock (a colony exists at our laboratory since 2004) for their anxiety/fearfulness profiles (using a battery of both unconditioned and conditioned tests/tasks), as well as regarding their stress-induced hormonal responses, coping style under inescapable stress and spatial learning ability. We have also compared the phenotypic profiles of NIH-HS rats with those of the low anxious RHA-I and the high anxious RLA-I rat strains. The NIH-HS rat stock is, as a population, a rather anxious type of rat, with predominantly reactive/passive coping style in unlearned and learned anxiety/fear tests, and elevated stress hormone responses (as well as enhanced “depressive” symptoms in the forced swimming test). Genetic studies currently under way have thus far revealed that the genetically heterogeneous NIH-HS rat stock constitutes a unique tool for fine mapping of QTL (for multiple behavioural and biological complex traits) to megabase resolution levels, thus enabling candidate gene identification. This paper proposes a more inclusive statistical model for predicting image noise in Computed Tomography (CT), associated with scanning factors, considering the effect of beam hardening and image processing filters. It is based on power functions where the levels of the parameters will determine the rate of noise variation with respect to a given scanning factor. It includes the influence of tube potential, tube current, slice thickness, Field of View (FOV), reconstruction methods and post-processing filters. To validate the model, tomographic measurements were made by using a PMMA phantom that simulates paediatric head and adult abdomen, a PET bottle was used to simulate the head of the new-born. The influence of ROI (Region Of Interest) size over nonlinear model parameters was analysed, and high variations of powers of attenuation and FOV were found depending on ROI size. A nonlinear robust regression method was used. The validation was performed graphically by weighted residual analysis. A nonlinear noise model was obtained with an adjusted coefficient of determination for ROI sizes between 10% and 70% of the phantom diameter or FOV. The model confirms the significance of the tube current, slice thickness and beam hardening effect on image. The process of estimation of the parameters of the model by Nonlinear Robust Regression turned out to be optimal.
