Study on mechanism of mercury oxidation by fly ash from coal combustion

To understand the interaction of fly ash and mercury, systematic experiments on mercury oxidation in single flue gas composition are conducted on a fixed bed reactor system, the desorption rate and speciation of mercury are valuated. The results indicate that fly ash itself can significantly promote elemental mercury oxidation. A classification of fly ash activated sites is developed according to the speciation of mercury during adsorption-desorption tests, the reaction mechanism of mercury oxidation by fly ash is proposed. Acid gas can promote mercury oxidation and improve the stability of oxidation product. Lattice oxygen is an important oxidant of mercury oxidation.

Safety and Antibody Responses to Aerosolized MMR II Vaccine in Adults: An Exploratory Study

Background: There have been no reported studies involving aerosol immunization with 2 of the 3 components of MMR II vaccine—Attenuvax measles vaccine and Jeryl-Lyn mumps vaccine. Objective: To evaluate the safety and antibody responses to aerosolized Attenuvax measles strain, Jeryl Lynn mumps strain and RA 27/3 rubella component of an MMR vaccine in adults, before assessing the booster administration of this vaccine in children. Methods: A pilot study to evaluate safety and antibody responses of MMR II (Merch Sharp & Dhome corp., Whitehouse Station, NJ 08889, USA) components administered by aerosol was carried out in 27 healthy adults of 21 to 38 years of age. All participants were followed-up during 28 days following immunization for detection of clinical adverse events. Immune response was evaluated by plaque reduction neutralization test for measles, and commercial ELISA kits for rubella and mumps. Results: Only mild clinical adverse events were noted. Despite high levels of baseline seropositivity to all vaccine components, seroresponses to measles, rubella and mumps occurred in 44%, 15% and 41%, respectively. conclusions: These outcomes compare favorably with earlier studies of other MMR vaccines given by aerosol. Further evaluations on safety and booster immune response should be performed in children.

OBJECTIVE： To determine the role of a pharmacokinetic interaction in the protective effect of curcumin against the gastric damage induced by indomethacin administration as such or as its prodrug acemetacin. METHODS： Wistar rats orally received single dose of indomethacin （30 mg/kg） with and without curcumin （30 mg/kg）; gastric injury was evaluated by determining the total damaged area. Additional groups of rats received an oral single dose of indomethacin （30 mg/kg） or its prodrug acemetacin （34.86 mg/kg） in the presence or absence of curcumin （30 mg/kg）. Indomethacin and acemetacin concentrations in plasma from blood draws were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography Plasma.concentration-against-time curves were constructed, and bioavailability parameters, maximal concentration （Cmax） and area under the curve to the last sampling time （AUC0_t） were estimated. RESULTS： concomitant administration of indomethacin and curcumin resulted in a significantly reduced gastric damage compared to indomethacin alone. However, co-administration of curcumin did not produce any significant alteration in the bioavailability parameters of indomethacin and acemetacin after administration of either the active compound or the prodrug. coNCLUSION： Curcumin exhibits a protective effect against indomethacin-induced gastric damage, but does not produce a reduction of the bioavailability of this nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, indomethacin. Data thus suggest that a pharmacokinetic mechanism of action is not involved in curcumin gastroprotection.

Trace elements, isotopic modeling and U-Th-Pb SHRIMP zircon age constraints are used to reconstruct the eruption history and magmatic processes of the Piedra Parada Caldera. In the early Eocene, the crystal-poor Barda colorada ignimbrite(BCI), having >>15% micro-porphyritic crystals with respect to magmatic components, erupted a volume estimated in more than 300 km^3. The Piedra Parada caldera is located in the Patagonian Andes foreland, at the southern end of the calderas field of the Pilcaniyeu Volcanic Belt(PVB). This belt is related to an extensional tectonic setting as a result of the collision of the Farallon-Aluk ridge with South America, which enabled the development of a transform ocean/continental plate margin followed by the detachment of the Aluk plate and the opening of a slab window. The BCI extra-caldera Plateau is a >100 m thick deposit, having a lower unit with high silica(Si O_2> 76 wt.%),potassium poor rhyolitic composition(trondhjemitic like magma), and an upper unit with normal to high potassium rhyolitic composition(granitic like magma). A trace elements modeling of the BCI units shows that the BCI lower and upper units did not evolve from fractionation or immiscibility in the shallow magma reservoir. The BCI also have a primitive isotopic signature(initial87 Sr/86 Sr =0.7031-0.7049 and ε_(Nd)= +3.4 to +3.65). Thus, tectonic, compositional and isotopic constraints suggest the fast ascent of high silica magmas to a shallow reservoir, and point to an upper mantle origin for these rhyolitic magmas in a transitional(Orogenic-Anorogenic) tectono-magmatic setting. U-Th-Pb SHRIMP zircon crystallization ages of the Syn-caldera stage BCI units(56 -51.5 ma) show a protracted life of 5 ma for this caldera reservoir. The age of 52.9 ± 0.3 ma is considered the best fit for the possible maximum age for the caldera collapse. Optimizing flying objects’wing performance has attracted a significant attention in the last few *** this article,some of the main mechanisms for changing the geometry of the wing were investigated and a new mechanism is proposed to improve the aerodynamic performance of the airplane *** designs have been simulated and analyzed from both aerodynamic and control points of *** aerodynamic simulations using CFD methods,two airfoils of NACA series 6 with specifications 65-212 and 65-2012 were *** results indicated that both airfoils used have a better performance compared to others in a certain range of the angle of ***,a new mechanism is proposed to change the wing geometry to optimize its *** the proposed mechanism,the structures of airfoils and wings consist of two fixed and moving parts,which can change their geometry with the help of a control *** fixed part has a grooved track,and as the moving part moves in the direction of the grooves,the curvature of the upper and lower parts of the wing *** design control circuit includes an angle sensor,a micro controller,and a *** CFD results are entered into the micro controller as *** any moment,the micro controller receives the angle data from the angle sensor and by comparing them with the CFD data,and issuing a command to the servomotor,it situates the wing curvature in the optimal state at all *** built mechanism was tested at an attack angle of 0°and 25°.The results showed that the different parts of the mechanism work with very high precision and put the geometric shape of the wing in an optimal state in a completely intelligent *** should be noted that the average error in test for t/c and Xt/c was 15.3% and 9%,respectively.

The non-thermal plasma technology is a promising technique to treat SO2 and NOx. Chemical radicals produced with this technology can remove several pollutants at atmospheric pressure in a very short period of time simultaneously. Both theoretical and experimental study on SO2 and NOx removal, by a dielectric barrier discharge （DBD） with corona effect, is presented.
