BACKGROUND Diabetes mellitus is a worldwide public health problem associated with significant complications. There is lack of data on the quality of care of patients with diabetes, specifically among the non-Western countries. Efforts have been made in Lebanon to better study the characteristics of patients with diabetes mellitus in order to improve glycemic control and prevent late-term *** To investigate control and therapeutic management of patients with diabetes mellitus in the current medical practice in *** Wave 6 of the International Diabetes Management Practice Study in Lebanon is an international and multicenter study involving selected *** Only 1 patient with type 1 diabetes and 595 patients with type 2 diabetes were included in Wave 6. Average age was around 60 years, with a mean body mass index of 30. The mean fasting serum glucose was 159.42 mg/dL, and the mean glycosylated hemoglobin(HbA1 c) level was 7.98 with around 30% achieving an HbA1 c target of < 7%. More patients were on oral anti-diabetic *** of diabetic complications has improved over the years. A large percentage is diagnosed with hypertension and dyslipidemia, the majority ofwhom were treated but only a small percentage were *** Diabetes, with its associated dyslipidemia and hypertension, is still not very well controlled. AIM:To compare the corneal outcome in Fuchs’endothelial dystrophy(FED)patients between femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery(FLACS)and conventional phaco surgery(CPS).METHODS:This was a randomized controlled study comparing one eye surgery by FLACS and the contralateral eye operated by CPS(stop and chop technique)in FED *** corneal thickness,corneal light backscatter,corneal densitometry,and central corneal endothelial cell count and hexagonality(noncontact endothelial cell microscope),and corrected distance visual acuity(CDVA)were assessed preoperatively and at day 1,40,and 180 ***:Totally 31 patients(16 women)were *** day 40 postoperatively,the mean endothelial cell loss(ECL)was 23.67%by FLACS and 17.30%by CPS(P=0.53).At day 180 postoperatively,ECL was 25.58%in FLACS and 21.32%in CPS(P=0.69).Densitometry data in all layers and all annuli from anterior layer to posterior layer in annuli 0-2,2-6,6-10 and 10-12,total densitometry with all layers and all annuli was performed.A significant difference was found in 6-10(posterior layer)at day 1 with-1.42 grayscale units(GSU;95%CI:-2.66 to-0.19,P=0.02).In 10-12(anterior layer,central layer and all layers)at day 40 were significant different with 7.7(95%CI:1.89 to 13.50,P=0.009),3.97(95%CI:0.23 to 7.71,P=0.03),4.73 GSU(95%CI:0.71 to 8.75,P=0.02),*** the remaining parameters we found no difference between the two groups(P>0.05).Three CPS eyes suffered from corneal ***:There is no significant difference in corneal outcome between FLACS and *** cell density and pentacam corneal outcome may be inadequate as outcome parameters in FED patients.

Reliable and comprehensive monitoring data are required to trace and counteract biodiversity loss. Highthroughput metabarcoding using DNA extracted from community samples (bulk) or from water orsediment (environmental DNA) has revolutionized biomonitoring, given the capability to assess biodiversity across the tree of life rapidly with feasible effort and at a modest price. DNA metabarcoding canbe upscaled to process hundreds of samples in parallel. However, while automated high-throughputanalysis workflows are well-established in the medical sector, manual sample processing still predominates in biomonitoring laboratory workflows limiting the upscaling and standardization for routinemonitoring applications. Here we present an automated, scalable, and reproducible metabarcodingworkflow to extract DNA from bulk samples, perform PCR and library preparation on a liquid *** features are the independent sample replication throughout the workflow and the use of manynegative controls for quality assurance and quality control. We generated two datasets: i) a validationdataset consisting of 42 individual arthropod specimens of different species, and ii) a routine monitoringdataset consisting of 60 stream macroinvertebrate bulk samples. As a marker, we used the mitochondrialCOI gene. Our results show that the developed single-deck workflow is free of laboratory-derivedcontamination and produces highly consistent results. Minor deviations between replicates are mostlydue to stochastic differences for low abundant OTUs. Thus, we successfully demonstrated that roboticliquid handling can be used reliably from DNA extraction to final library preparation on a single deck,thereby substantially increasing throughput, reducing costs, and increasing data robustness for biodiversity assessments and monitoring.

It is well known that smart thermostats (STs) have become key devices in the implementation of smart homes;thus, they are considered as primary elements for the control of electrical energy consumption in households. Moreover, energy consumption is drastically affected when the end users select unsuitable STs or when they do not use the STs correctly. Furthermore, in future, Mexico will face serious electrical energy challenges that can be considerably resolved if the end users operate the STs in a correct manner. Hence, it is important to carry out an in-depth study and analysis on thermostats, by focusing on social aspects that influence the technological use and performance of the thermostats. This paper proposes the use of a signal detection theory (SDT), fuzzy detection theory (FDT), and chi-square (CS) test in order to understand the perceptions and beliefs of end users about the use of STs in Mexico. This paper extensively shows the perceptions and beliefs about the selected thermostats in Mexico. Besides, it presents an in-depth discussion on the cognitive perceptions and beliefs of end users. Moreover, it shows why the expectations of the end users about STs are not met. It also promotes the technological and social development of STs such that they are relatively more accepted in complex electrical grids such as smart grids.

Background:Despite the high prevalence of strongyloidiasis in the Laotian population,Laotian hospitals still lack diagnostic capacity to appropriately diagnose Strongyloides stercoralis *** cross-sectional hospital-based study was conducted to assess the prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis infection among hospitalized patients treated at Mahosot Hospital,the primary reference hospital of Lao People’s Democratic Republic(Lao PDR),and to validate feasible methods for diagnosing *** infection at hospital’s ***:Between September and December 2018,stool samples of 104 inpatients were investigated for *** infection by wet smear,Baermann technique,Koga Agar plate culture(KAPC),and real-time detection polymerase chain reaction(RTD-PCR)at the Infectious Diseases Ward of the Mahosot Hospital in *** sensitivity,the specificity,the negative predictive value(NPV)of each diagnostic test,as well as their combination(s)was calculated using a composite reference standard(CRS).The correlation of the different test methods was assessed by chi-square or Fisher’s exact ***’s kappa coefficient was used to assess the diagnostic agreement of the different test ***:The overall prevalence of *** infections among the study population was 33.4%.The cumulative infection prevalence statistically significantly increased from the lowest age group of 40 years and below(22.4%),to the medium(40.0%)and to the oldest age group of 61 year and above(72.7%)(P=0.003).The cumulative infection prevalence of CRS was considerably higher in male(40.4%)compared to female patients(28.1%),but not statistically different(P=0.184).The diagnostic sensitivity of Baermann technique,KAPC,RTD-PCR,and the combination of Baermann technique and KAPC were 60.0,60.0,74.3,and 77.1%,*** 13 patients(37.1%)of the total 35 *** patients diagnosed with any technique had a simultaneously positive diagnostic test with Baer

Mineralogy and geochemistry of sands of the lower course of the Sanaga River, Cameroon: implications for weathering,provenance, and tectonic setting

This study focuses on the mineralogy and bulk chemical composition of 19 sediment samples,collected from the Sanaga River bed,between Nanga-Eboko and the Atlantic Ocean in Cameroon,to infer provenance,weathering,and tectonic *** textural analysis revealed that these sediments are mainly coarse-grained sands.X-ray diffraction and heavy mineral analyses show that these sands are made of quartz,microcline,plagioclase,muscovite,ilmenite,anatase,magnetite,opaques,and *** Index of Chemical Variability values(1.07–2.68)indicates that the sands are *** Chemical Index of Alteration(53–66%),Plagioclase Index of Alteration(PIA;57–75%),and Mafic Index of Alteration(54–67%)values revealed a moderate intensity of weathering for these *** to the compositional maturity diagram,the sands are mainly *** studied sands show enrichment in light rare earth elements relative to heavy rare earth elements and a negative anomaly in Eu(Eu/Eu*=0.32–0.83).These sands were derived from felsic metamorphic rocks dated Meso to Neoproterozoic from the Pan-African(700–1000 Ma)domain of south ***/U ratios(mean=5.40;n=19)reveal that these sands originating from felsic source rocks and are low to moderately *** the tectonic discrimination diagrams,all the samples are plotted in the rift and passive margin domains,which is consistent with the tectonic history of Pan African in southern Cameroon.
