Electrical bioimpedance and other techniques for gastric emptying and motility evaluation

The aim of this article is to identify non-invasive, inexpensive, highly sensitive and accurate techniques for evaluating and diagnosing gastric diseases. In the case of the stomach, there are highly sensitive and specific methods for assessing gastric motility and emptying (GmE). However, these methods are invasive, expensive and/or not technically feasible for all clinicians and patients. We present a summary of the most relevant international information on non-invasive methods and techniques for clinically evaluating GmE. We particularly emphasize the potential of gastric electrical bioimpedance (EBI). EBI was initially used mainly in gastric emptying studies and was essentially abandoned in favor of techniques such as electrogastrography and the gold standard, scintigraphy. The current research evaluating the utility of gastric EBI either combines this technique with other frequently used techniques or uses new methods for gastric EBI signal analysis. In this context, we discuss our results and those of other researchers who have worked with gastric EBI. In this review article, we present the following topics: (1) a description of the oldest methods and procedures for evaluating GmE; (2) an explanation of the methods currently used to evaluate gastric activity; and (3) a perspective on the newest trends and techniques in clinical and research GmE methods. We conclude that gastric EBI is a highly effective non-invasive, easy to use and inexpensive technique for assessing GmE.

Ethnoedaphology as an Integrating Process between Academy and Peasant Knowledge in the Productive System of Coffee (Coffea arabica L.) of Southwestern Colombia

Community knowledge about agricultural land and its management constitutes a complex system of wisdom, with universal principles and categories similar or complementary to those used by modern soil science. However, soil management is only recognized from the point of view of agronomy and academia, covering problems in rural areas at the time of adopting agricultural alternatives. For this reason, peasant knowledge was characterized and related to scientific knowledge, in the valuation of land properties in the coffee (Coffea arabica L.) production system. The study was carried out in four villages in the municipality of Buesaco (Nari?o, Colombia), with humid pre-mountain forest conditions, an average temperature of 18?C, annual rainfall of 1400 mm, and an altitude of 1959 m. The study was carried out in the municipality of Buesaco (Nari?o, Colombia). Through field visits, priority was given to farms with coffee production systems under different types of shade. A semi-structured survey was applied to learn about the social, environmental, productive, ancestral, and cultural components, with the application of participatory methodologies allowed to learn about traditional management and practices in the soil component. The results allowed us to identify four types of production systems from coffee without shade to coffee in association with different multipurpose woody perennials and mosses. Diverse dynamics of crop and land management are presented. Several references were found to differentiate land types such as color, texture, production and fertility, being characteristics that are associated to classify soil quality and make management decisions and type of fertilization. Through the perception of the farmers, six land classes with different characteristics were identified, relating the characterization with what was obtained in the chemical analysis of lands. Evaluation of antimycobacterium activity of the essential oils of cumin (Cuminum cyminum), clove (Eugenia caryophyllata), cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum), laurel (Laurus nobilis) and anis (Pimpinella anisum) against mycobacterium tuberculosis

In this study Essential oils were used with cumin, cloves, cinnamon, laurel and anis to determine minimum Inhibitory Concentration (mIC) against mycobacterium tuberculosis strains. The mICs were determined on m. tuberculosis H37Rv sensitive to all five firstline antituberculosis drugs (streptomycin, isoniazid, rifampicin, ethambutol and pirazinamide), two H37-Rv (CH-8 and CH-15) isoniazid-resistant, two H37Rv (CH-07 and CH-09) rifampicin-resistant, two H37Rv (CH-03 and CH-06) streptomycin-resistant, and two H37Rv (CH-09 and CH-10) ethambutol-resistant using the microplate alamar blue assay. The results obtained showed that the cumin and cinnamon essential oils showed a mIC of 12.5 μg/ml against reference strain H37Rv. The five essential oils used in this study were effective against the isoniazid-resistant variant of H37RV with mIC values in the range 12.5-100 μg/ml, the most potent being the cumin and cin-namon (mIC = 12.5). Similar results were obtained against rifampicin-resistant variant of H37RV with mIC values in the range 12.5-100 μg/ml;the most active ones?in this case were the essential oils of cumin and cloves. The essential oils of anis and laurel were active with mIC value to 100 μg/ml. Clove, cumin, and cinnamon essential oils were active against all strains utilized in this study, with mIC values in the range 6.25 μg/ml to 25 μg/ml.

Root Sprouts of Domesticated Phaseolus coccineus L. Overwinter Plants and the Environment at Its Collection Sites

Buds emerge from the roots of domesticated runner bean plants (Phaseolus coccineus L.) as sprouts and give the crop its persistence. This particularity of the species seems to be associated with the environment where the species was cultivated during long time. Data on regrowth traits were recorded on 70 accessions of domesticated P. coccineus after overwintering at a site in the central highlands of mexico. The characteristics recorded included fresh weight of vegetative regrowth, root length, root crown diameter, and diameter of the main root. most accessions that sprout the following spring, after the grain harvest of the previous year, come from temperate and semi-cold sites with cambisol and andosol soils in mixed Quercus pine forest and high mountain fir trees. Those that do not sprout are from sites of semiarid temperate climate, haplic phaeozem soil in shrub grasslands with deciduous broadleaved trees, and semiwarm subhumid climate, eutrophic regosol soil in deciduous broadleaved forest. Two types of roots were differentiated: branched and thickened taproots, also associated with a different climate, and the type of soil of the collection sites.

AIm： To study the role of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria in the pathogenesis of liver injury, specifically the activation of inflammatory mediators. mETHODS： Peripheral blood mononuclear cells of 20 out-patients were studied, 10 of them with cirrhosis,Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were isolated and exposed to lipopolysaccharide or lipoteichoic acid. CD14, Toll-like receptor 2 and 4 expression was determined by flow cytometry, and tumor necrosis factor （TNF） α, interleukin （1L）-1β, IL-6, IL-12 and IL-10 secretion in su- pernatants was determined by ELISA. RESULTS： Higher CD14, Toll-like receptor 2 and 4 expression was observed in peripheral blood mononudear cells from cirrhotic patients, （P 〈 0.01, P 〈 0.006, P 〈 0.111） respectively. Lipopolysaccharide and lipoteichoic acid induced a further increase in CD14 expression （P 〈 0.111 lipopolysaccharide, P 〈 0.013 lipoteichoic acid）, and a decrease in Toll-like receptor 2 （P 〈 0.008 lipopolysaccharide, P 〈 0.008 lipoteichoic acid） and Toll-like receptor 4 （P 〈 0.008 lipopolysaccharide, P 〈 0.028 li- poteichoic acid） expression. With the exception of TNFα, absolute cytokine secretion of peripheral blood mononuclear cells was lower in cirrhotic patients under nonexposure conditions （P 〈 0.070 IL-6, P 〈 0.009 IL-1]5, P 〈 0.022 IL-12）. Once exposed to lipopolysaccharide or lipoteichoic acid, absolute cytokine secretion of peripheral blood mononuclear cells was similar in cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic patients, determining a more vigorous response in the former （P 〈 0.005 TNFα, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-2 and IL-10 lipopolysaccharide; P 〈 0.037 TNFα; P 〈 0.006 IL-113; P 〈 0.005 IL-6; P 〈 0.007 IL-12; P 〈 0.014 IL-10 lipoteichoic acid）. Inflammation and endothelial dysfunction are linked to the pathogenesis of atherosclerotic disease. Recent studies suggest that periodontal infection and the ensuing increase in the levels of inflammatory markers may be associated with myocardial infarction, peripheral vascular disease and cerebrovascular disease. The present article aimed at reviewing contemporary data on the pathophysiology of vascular endothelium and its association with periodontitis in the scenario of cardiovascular disease.

Adsorption Study of Acid Red 114 and Basic Blue 3 on Sunflower Stalk

The aim of this work was to evaluate the sunflower stalk (SS) as an adsorbent in the removal of red acid 114 (AR 114) and basic blue 3 (BB 3) in aqueous solutions, without any physicochemical treatment, where temperature and concentration were the studied variables. The research was developed by using the batch processing mode;the contact time was one hour, with constant agitation of 200 rpm and pH of 7000 ± 0.050, using a central composite design. The adsorbent was characterized through BET, SEm, acid sites and basic sites, charging point, and infrared. The results indicated that the sunflower stalk was a viable and economical alternative for the removal of water that had been contaminated by dyes, showing a better performance for the AR 114 dye, reaching a 71.96% of removal with respect to the initial load. In addition, the EPI Web software was used to model the environmental performance of colorants.

正如电子制造业中的其他生产流程一样,对清洗工艺中各个参数进行监控非常重要,只有在准确控制了工艺参数的前提下,方可确保工艺的可靠性、可重复性以及成本效率。清洗设备供应商们可以确保设备内液体的温度、压力、流量和清洗时间都得到有效控制,但是目前的技术却很难实现对清洗液的浓度进行监控,如何有效控制清洗液浓度成为了业界一项难度极高的挑战。以往,手持式或是自动化的折光率测试仪经常被用来测试溶液的浓度。不可置否的是,当新鲜清洗液还未受到污染时,折光率的测试结果的确可以作为参考,但是随着污染物不断积累,清洗液中的残留物质越来越多,污染物将会对光的折射率产生影响使测试结果产生偏差,错误的读数进一步将影响整体工艺的稳定性。本文将阐述如何利用一种激动人心的新技术来构建闭环的浓度控制系统并精确测试混有助焊剂残留的水基清洗液的浓度。笔者将引用大量对比性的数据来说明这种新的工艺控制技术与传统测试相比展现出的优越性。

Objective： Vascular calcification is the consequence of the complex interaction between genetic, environmental, and vascular factors, which ultimately lead to the deposition of calcium in the tunica intima （atherosclerotic calcification） or tunica media （m6nckenberg＇s sclerosis）. Vascular calcification is also closely related to other pathologies, such as diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and chronic kidney disease. It has been concluded that the degree of vascular calcification may vary from person to person, even if the associated pathologies and environmental factors are the same. Therefore, this suggests an important genetic contribution to the development of vascular calcification. This review aimed to find the most recent evidence about vascular calcification pathophysiology regarding the genetic aspects and molecular pathways. Data Sources： We conducted an exhaustive search in Scopus, EBSCO, and Pubmed with the keywords ＂genetics and vascular calcification＂, ＂molecular pathways, genetic and vascular calcification＂ and included the main articles from January 1995 up to August 2016. We focused on the most recent evidence about vascular calcification pathophysiology regarding the genetic aspects and molecular pathways. Study Selection： The most valuable published original and review articles related to our objective were selected. Results： Vascular calcification is a multifactorial disease; thus, its pathophysiology cannot be explained by a single specific factor, rather than by the result of the association of several genetic variants, molecular pathway interactions, and environmental factors that promote its development. Conclusion： Although several molecular aspects of this mechanism have been elucidated, there is still a need for a better understanding of the factors that predispose to this disease.
