In this editorial,we discuss an article by Wang et al,focusing on the role of mitochondria in peripheral insulin resistance and insulin *** numerous in vitro and pre-clinical studies supporting the involvement of mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of diabetes and its complications,efforts to target mitochondria for glycemic control in diabetes using mitochondria-targeted antioxidants have produced inconsistent *** intricate functionality of mitochondria is summarized to underscore the challenges it poses as a therapeutic *** mitochondria-targeted antioxidants have demonstrated improvement in mitochondrial function and oxidative stress in pre-clinical diabetes models,the results regarding glycemic control have been mixed,and no studies have evaluated their hypoglycemic effects in diabetic ***,pre-clinical trials have shown promising outcomes in ameliorating diabetes-related ***,we review some reasons why mitochondria-targeted antioxidants may not function effectively in the context of mitochondrial *** also highlight several alternative approaches under development that may enhance the targeting of mitochondria for diabetes treatment.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of dietary supplementation of b-hydroxybutyric acid(BHBA)on performance,nutrient digestibility,organ development,and serum composition in earlyweaned goat ***-four goat kids at 30 d of age were assigned to 4 treatments in a completely randomized design:1)control(basal diet);2)low(basal diet with 3 g/d per animal BHBA);3)medium(basal diet with 6 g/d per animal BHBA;and 4)high(basal diet with 9 g/d per animal BHBA).Subsequently,48(6 kids per treatment)goat kids were randomly selected and slaughtered at 60 and 90 d of *** with the control group,BHBA at low and high doses increased body weight(Pmproved organ development,especially at the lowest dose(Pmatter and crude protein increased with age(Pm ceruloplasmin increased(Pm creatinine(Pme but was not affected by *** serum total antioxidant capacity and superoxide dismutase decreased with the high dose of BHBA at 90 d of age(Pm glutathione peroxidase and malondialdehyde increased with the high doses of BHBA(Pmance,organ development,and health status against weaning *** high doses of BHBA in the long term could negatively affect antioxidant status.

As-cast HK40 steel was aged at 700, 800, or 900℃ for times as long as 2000 h. microstructural characterization showed that the primary m_7C_3 carbide network contained a substantial content of manganese, in agreement with the microsegregation of manganese calculated by Thermo-Calc using the Scheil–Gulliver module. The dissolution of primary carbides caused the solute supersaturation of austenite and subsequent precipitation of fine m_(23)C_6 carbides in the austenite matrix for aged specimens. During prolonged aging, the carbide size increased with increasing time because of the coarsening process. A time–temperature–precipitation diagram for m_(23)C_6 carbides was calculated using the Thermo-CalcPRISmA software; this diagram showed good agreement with the experimental growth kinetics of precipitation. The fine carbide precipitation caused an increase in hardness; however, the coarsening process of carbides promoted a decrease in hardness. Nanoindentation tests of the austenite matrix indicated an increase in ductility with increasing aging time.

Plant peroxisomes have the capacity to gen erate different reactive oxygen and nitrogen species(ROS and RNS),such as H2O2,superoxide radical(O2^·-),nitric oxide and peroxynitrite(ONOO^-).These organelles have an active nitrooxidative metabolism which can be exacerbated by adverse stress *** sulfide(H2S)is a new signaling gasotransmitter which can mediate the posttranslational modification(PTm)*** used Arabidopsis thaliana transgenic seedlings expressing cyan fluorescent protein(CFP)fused to a canonical peroxisome targeting signal 1(PTS1)to visualize peroxisomes in living cells,as well as a specific fluorescent probe which showed that peroxisomes contain H2S.H2S was also detected in chloroplasts under glyphosate-induced oxidative stress *** enzyme activities,including catalase,photorespiratory H2O2-generating glycolate oxidase(GOX)and hydroxypyruvate reductase(HPR),were assayed in vitro with a H2S *** line with the persulfidation of this enzyme,catalase activity declined significantly in the presence of the H2S *** corroborate the inhibitory effect of H2S on catalase activity,we also assayed pure catalase from bovine liver and pepper fruit-enriched samples,in which catalase activity was *** together,these data provide evidenee of the presence of H2S in plant peroxisomes which appears to regulate catalase activity and,consequently,the peroxisomal H2O2 metabolism.

Patterns of variation in the size of vulture foraging groups,and their ecological causes and consequences,remain litle explored despite strong links with the carrion recycling service that this key functional group *** documented the group size-frequency pattern of Andean con-dors Vultur gryphus gathered to feed on 42 equine carcasses experimentally placed in Bolivia,between 2012 and 2019,along an elevation range of 1,300-4,500 m *** on the location(altitude and latitude)of the foraging groups,we examined the relationship between their size and species'population parameters(size and trend),habitat conditions,and livestock carcass availability and *** utilized a high frequency(93%)of carcasses forming groups that ranged from 1 to 80 individuals(mean=25,median=18)and shaped a"lazy-J curve"typical pattern of size-frequency distribution whereby few groups(5,12%)were large(>55 individuals)and most(21,50%)were relatively small(most larger groups formed at lower sites(below c.3,000 m asl),likely following an altitudinal gradient whereby larger groups are more likely to form around larger carcasses(i.e.,cattle),which are more likely to occur at lower *** of population size,group size could be an adaptive response of condors via local enhancement for improving individual scavenging *** information gaps on this topic still exist,thus we provide a set of questions to address them,especially amidst the unrestricted impacts of human activities that condition vulture survival globally.

Watermelon is an L-citrulline-rich fruit that has been used as a supplement to increase L-arginine in plasma,which in turn plays a critical role in the synthesis of nitric oxide,a molecule that regulates vascular *** rind,similar to its pulp,presents a high L-citrulline content,yet a lower concentration of sugar,which would be more convenient for individuals who need to refrain from excessive sugar ingestion(i.e.,diabetics and obese individuals).Further,ingestion of watermelon rind can be a sustainable alternative to increase plasma L-arginine,given that rind of fruits is commonly ***,we evaluated the effect of ingestion of a product derived from watermelon rind and pulp(microencapsulation in spray drier)on plasma amino acids(L-citrulline,L-arginine and L-ornithine),glucose,and *** participants(28.36±5.70 years)were enrolled in a single blind,cross-over and randomized *** ingested microencapsulated watermelon rind and pulp(containing 4 g of L-citrulline)plasma amino acids,glucose,and insulin were evaluated before and 30,60,90 and 120 min after *** was observed that both microencapsulated watermelon rind and pulp increased L-citrulline through 120 min and microencapsulated watermelon rind significantly increased L-arginine at 30 *** addition,microencapsulated watermelon rind and pulp similarly increased plasma glucose and insulin *** conclusion,these findings suggest that both microencapsulated watermelon rind and pulp are effective to increase plasma L-citrulline and microencapsulated watermelon rind effectively increases plasma *** addition,rind and pulp promote similar changes on plasma glucose and insulin.

Al-doped ZnO(AZO) powders were prepared by using metal chloride precursors and the sol-gel technique. IR peaks observed at 1590 cm-1 and 1620 cm-1indicated the formation of metal chelate as a consequence of the addition of acetylacetone to the metal chloride solution. TG-DSC analysis of the AZO gels confirmed the formation of metal chelate as evidenced by the development of several weight loss peaks accompanied by the introduction of new endothermic peaks. The resulting AZO gels were annealed at 500, 600, and 800 ℃ to study the effect of annealing temperature. XRD and SEm results showed that crystallization of AZO gels takes place around 600 ℃. Hexagonal wurtzite structure was identified as the main phase for all the samples. In addition, small shift of the XRD(002) peak coupled with XPS results from the AZO powders confirmed the successful doping of the ZnO powders. micron sized rod-like AZO powders were uniform in dimension and morphology and remained stable even at 800 ℃.

Frugivory in lizards is often assumed to be constrained by body size;only large individuals are considered capable of consuming fruits, with the potential of acting as seed dispersers. However, only one previous study has tested the correlation of frugivory with body and head size at an archipelago scale across closely related species. All nine lava lizards (microlophus spp.) were studied on the eleven largest Galapagos islands from 2010 to 2016 to investigate whether frugivory is related to body and head size. We also tested whether fruit abunda nee in flue nces fruit con sumption and explored the effect of seed ingestion on seedling emergence time and percentage. Our results showed that across islands, lava lizards varied considerably in size (64-102 mm in mean snoutvent length) and level of frugivory (1-23%, i.e., percentage of droppings with seeds). However, level of frugivory was only weakly affected by size as fruit consumption was also common among small lizards. Lava lizards consumed fruits throughout the year and factors other than fruit abundance may be more importa nt drivers of fruit selecti on (e.g., fruit size, energy con tent of pulp). From 2,530 droppings, 1,714 seeds of at least 61 plant species were identified, 76% of the species being native to the Galapagos. most seeds (91%) showed no external structural damage. Seedling emergence time (44 versus 118 days) and percentage (20% versus 12%) were enhanced for lizardingested seeds compared to control (uningested) fruits. De-pulping by lizards (i.e., removal of pulp with potential germi nation inhibitors) might in crease the chances that at least some seeds find suitable recruitment conditi ons. We con eluded that lizards are importa nt seed dispersers throughout the year and across the whole archipelago, regardless of body size.

mexico is the main producer,consumer and exporter of avocado in the world,being michoacan the main producer state contributing more than 80%of the national *** are phytopathogens that decimate the production causing the death of the *** samples were collected in avocado trees that showed the characteristic symptomatology of the disease known as avocado sadness,the sampling was carried out in four of the main avocado producing towns,in the state of michoacan,*** isolation consisted in sowing root tissue in Petri dishes with V8R-PARPH culture medium,subsequently they were identified morphologically and for species level it was determined by molecular biology,with the PCR-ITS *** tests were performed in triplicate with avocado seedlings with more than six *** 24 hours,the inoculated plants expressed decay in the apical part,after 120 hours the leaves showed yellowing and after 15 days there was a generalized wilt on the stem and leaves,re-isolating the phytopathogen Phytopythium *** study confirms the first report of the oomycete *** affecting avocado trees in the most important producing region of the mexican Republic.
