American Roth

An analysis of the Philip Roth's sustained pursuit of his American identity mixed with his engagement with the trope of the American Adam is the center of this paper. From the outset of his career, Roth has sought to be understood as an American, not Jewish, writer. But as his career unfolded, the challenges of sustaining his American identity grew, whether in Portnoy's Complaint, Sabbath's Theatre or the American Trilogy. The confrontation between American and Judaic identities increasingly became his subject as his Jewish roots threatened his American identity stemming from a Protestant, if not Puritan, literary heritage. Coleman Silk and Swede Levov from The Human Stain and American Pastoral represent the challenge best summarized by Abe Ravelstein in Bellow's eponymous novel when he remarks that “as a Jew you are also an American, but somehow you are not.” The paradox of Roth’s entanglement with the trope of the American Adam is that he both pursues and denies this identity, accepting its heroism but acknowledging its impossibility. One moment he publically declares “if I’m not an American, I am nothing,” but on the other, to be Roth he knows he must violate the Adamic ideal, prepared to renounce neither his American nor Jewish identities.

Background:Dietary Reference Intakes are used to guide the energy intake of the Canadian Armed Forces(CAF)field rations provided to military personnel deployed for training or ***,the high energy expenditures likely to occur under harsh environmental/metabolically challenging deployment conditions may not be adequately *** study examined the Ad libitum energy and nutrient intakes of CAF personnel(n=18)consuming field rations in a resting thermoneutral environment and during a day of standardized strenuous infantry activities at varying environmental ***:Dietary intake was assessed using a measured food intake/food waste method during the experimental treatment and for 6 h after *** treatments were administered in a randomized counterbalanced design:exercise(as standardized infantry activities)in the heat(30℃),exercise in the cold(–10℃),exercise in temperate thermoneutral(21℃)air temperatures and a resting(sedentary)trial(21℃).Results:The average Ad libitum consumption of field rations was 70%of the provided total energy(2776±99 kcal/8 h)during all *** with an acute challenge of increased energy expenditure and temperature stress in the simulated field conditions,participants’energy intakes(1985±747 kcal/8 h)under hot,cold and temperate treatments did not differ from energy intake during the sedentary condition(1920±640 kcal/8 h).Participants’energy intakes(1009±527 kcal/6 h)did not increase during the 6 h posttreatment period when the stresses of the strenuous physical activities and the harsh environmental temperatures had ***:These results should be considered when planning the provision of field rations for CAF personnel expected to be engaged in strenuous physical activities with prolonged exposure to temperature extremes.

AIm: To compare the results of in vivo human high resolution image registration studies of the eye during accommodation to the predictions of mathematical and finite element models of accommodation. mETHODS: Data from published high quality image registration studies of pilocarpine induced accommodative changes of equatorial lens radius(ELR) and central lens thickness(CLT) were statistically analyzed. RESULTS: The mean changes in ELR and CLT were 6.76 μm/diopter and 6.51 μm/diopter, respectively. The linear regressions, reflecting the association between ELR and accommodative amplitude(AAELR) was: slope=6.58 μm/diopter, r^2=0.98, Pm/diopter, r^2=0.83, Pmeasured change in ELR(ELRpredicted). There was no statistical difference between ELRpredicted and the measured ELR as demonstrated by a Student's paired t-test: P=0.96 and linear regression analysis: slope=0.97, r^2=0.98, Pmage registration with invariant positional references demonstrates that ELR and CLT equivalently minimally increase ~7.0 μm/diopter during accommodation. The small equivalent increases in ELRand CLT are associated with a large accommodative amplitude. These findings are consistent with the predictions of mathematical and finite element models that specified the stiffness of the lens nucleus is the same or greater than the lens cortex and that accommodation involves a small force(<5 g).

Evaluation of anticancer effects of a pharmaceutically viable extract of a traditional polyherbal mixture against non-small-cell lung cancer cells

Objective: The present work tested organic solvents to prepare an extract with anticancer properties from a polyherbal mixture containing Nigella sativa(seeds), Hemidesmus indicus(roots) and Smilax glabra(rhizomes). We evaluate anticancer effects in non-small-cell lung cancer cells(NCI-H292), and discuss optimization for pharmaceutical use in the context of efficacy, yield and ***: Using different organic solvents, six extracts were prepared from the polyherbal mixture. Based on the cytotoxic effects of these extracts on NCI-H292 cells and normal lung cells(mRC-5), as evaluated by the sulphorhodamine B assay, the total ethyl acetate(T-EA) extract was selected for further *** possible anticancer mechanisms were assessed by evaluating the extract’s effects on apoptosis(through fluorescent microscopic analysis, DNA fragmentation analysis, caspase 3/7 assay and analysis of expression levels of apoptosis-related genes p53, Bax, survivin, Hsp70 and Hsp90), colony formation and antioxidant ***: The extract had cytotoxic effects against NCI-H292 cells in a time-and dose-dependent *** antioxidant activity and inhibition of colony formation were also observed. Proof-of-Concept and Feasibility Study to Evaluate the Effect of β-Glucan on Protective Qi Deficiency in Adults

Objective:To preliminarily explore the potential effect ofβ-glucan on Chinese medicine(Cm)concept protective qi deficiency(PQD),and the methodology for future definitive ***:To have a standardized assessment of PQD,a list of 13 potentially PQD-relevant parameters were firstly created,each with defined quantitative or categorial *** the data from 37 participants with(21 cases)or without(16 cases)PQD,multivariate logistic modeling was conducted to create a preliminary diagnostic PQD risk ***,21 participants diagnosed with PQD were treated withβ-glucan in a dose of 200 mg/day for 8 *** were collected for trial acceptability measures(rate of recruitment,withdrawal,and compliance),and the participants were assessed for PQD status at baseline and every 2 weeks ***:The preliminary logistic model consisted of 3 parameters(low voice and apathy,aversion to wind and cold,and Cun pulse).The resulting risk score demonstrated a degree of PQD-predicting accuracy that,as evaluated by statistical(discrimination and classification)methods,was higher than those obtained from any of the individual candidate *** 21 PQD participants treated withβ-glucan demonstrated good receptibility and a time-dependent improvement in PQD status as evidenced by the decrease of PQD participant to 9.5%at the end of ***:This study demonstrated the effect of proof-of-concept ofβ-glucan on improving PQD and the proof-of-concept of a multivariate-model-derived diagnostic PQD risk *** also indicated feasibility for future definitive *** like this embody an innovative approach that uses therapies derived from the mainstream biomedicine to enrich therapeutics guided by Cm principle.(Trial registration ***03829228).

Expression of myoglobin in the Urine of Cocaine Users

Background: The possibility exists that cocaine use in the absence of frank clinical presentation of acute cardiac events may be associated with subclinical injury including the release of myoglobin which is a nonspecific marker for cardiac and skeletal muscle damage. Objectives: This investigation examined urine specimens for potential differences between cocaine use and the expression of myoglobin (a marker associated with cardiovascular damage, inflammation and oxidative stress). methods:40 urine specimens were assayed for cocaine metabolites, creatinine, total protein (BSA) and myoglobin using ELISA and colorimetry. Results: We observed significant differences between male control and male cocaine positive urines for myoglobin. Interestingly, there was no statistically significant difference in females between control and cocaine positive urines. Conclusion: Differences in the urinary expression of myoglobin may be important in evaluating the gender based effects of cocaine use and may have potential clinical applications which may be related to gender differences in signs and symptoms of cocaine toxicity.

Validation of the Charleston psychiatric satisfaction scale—Hebrew version adapted for use in Israel

Objective: This study presents the psychometric properties of the Charleston Psychiatric Outpatient Satisfaction Scale—Hebrew Version adapted for use in Israel. methods: Two subversions were constructed: one for adult clients—mental Health Client Satisfaction Scale—Hebrew (mHCSS-H) and one for parents (or other caregivers) accompanying children with mental health problems—mental Health Parent Satisfaction Scale—Hebrew (mHPSS-H). The scales were administered to representative samples of 453 adult outpatients with severe mental disorders and 255 parents, respectively. Results: Internal consistency was excellent for both scales (Cronbach’s alpha coefficients 0.94 and 0.88, respectively). For both subvertsions, there were moderate to strong correlations between satisfaction with five service domains (Availability/Accessibility, Quality of care, Explanation/ Participation, Staff’s attitude, and Facilities conditions) and anchor items “Overall quality of the care provided” and “Would you recommend this clinic to a friend or relative should they need treatment?”) scores. Clients with more time in treatment were more satisfied with all the service domains, except for the staff's attitude domain. Conclusions: The results suggest that both Hebrew subversions are appropriate for routine satisfaction surveys in mental health outpatient settings and for research purposes in Israel.
