Effect of melatonin on the severity of L-arginine-induced experimental acute pancreatitis in rats

AIm： To determine the effect of melatonin pre- and post-treatment on the severity of L-arginine （L-Arg） -induced experimental pancreatitis in rats. mETHODS： male Wistar rats （25） were divided into five groups. Those in group A received two injections of 3.2 g/kg body weight L-Arg i.p. at an interval of 1 h. In group mA, the rats were treated with 50 mg/kg body weight melatonin i.p. 30 min prior to L-Arg administration. In group Am, the rats received the same dose of melatonin 1 h after L-Arg was given. In group m, a single dose of melatonin was administered as described previously. In group C the control animals received physiological saline injections i.p. All rats were exsanguinated 24 h after the second L-Arg injection. RESULTS： L-Arg administration caused severe necrotizing pancreatitis confirmed by the significant elevations in the serum amylase level, the pancreatic weight/body weight ratio （pw/bw）, the pancreatic IL-6 content and the myeloperoxidase activity, relative to the control values. Elevation of the serum amylase level was significantly reduced in rats given melatonin following L-Arg compared to rats injected with L-Arg only. The activities of the pancreatic antioxidant enzymes （Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase （CulZn-SOD） and catalase （CAT）） were significantly increased 24 h after pancreatitis induction. melatonin given in advance of L-Arg significantly reduced the pancreatic CAT activity relative to that in the rats treated with L-Arg alone. In the liver, L-Arg significantly increased the lipid peroxidation level, and the glutathione peroxidase and Cu/Zn-SOD activities, whereas the mn-SOD activity was reduced as compared to the control rats. melatonin pre-treatment prevented these changes. CONCLUSION： melatonin is an antioxidant that is able to counteract some of the L-Arg-induced changes during acute pancreatitis, and may therefore be helpful in the supportive therapy of patients with acute necrotizing pancreatitis.

Path Loss modeling: A machine Learning Based Approach Using Support Vector Regression and Radial Basis Function models

Path loss prediction models are vital for accurate signal propagation in wireless channels. Empirical and deterministic models used in path loss predictions have not produced optimal results. In this paper, we introduced machine learning algorithms to path loss predictions because it offers a flexible network architecture and extensive data can be used. We introduced support vector regression (SVR) and radial basis function (RBF) models to path loss predictions in the investigated environments. The SVR model was able to process several input parameters without introducing complexity to the network architecture. The RBF on its part provides a good function approximation. Hyperparameter tuning of the machine learning models was carried out in order to achieve optimal results. The performances of the SVR and RBF models were compared and result validated using the root-mean squared error (RmSE). The two machine learning algorithms were also compared with the Cost-231, SUI, Egli, Freespace, Cost-231 W-I models. The analytical models overpredicted path loss. Overall, the machine learning models predicted path loss with greater accuracy than the empirical models. The SVR model performed best across all the indices with RmSE values of 1.378 dB, 1.4523 dB, 2.1568 dB in rural, suburban and urban settings respectively and should therefore be adopted for signal propagation in the investigated environments and beyond.

The benefits of regular physical activity are well ***,few studies have examined the effectiveness of integrating physical activity(PA)into curricula within a post-secondary *** investigate the incorporation of PA into medical curriculum,we developed a series of optional exercise-based review sessions designed to reinforce musculoskeletal(mSK)anatomy course *** synchronous sessions were co-taught by a group fitness instructor and an anatomy *** fitness instructor would lead students through both strength and yoga style exercises,while the anatomy instructor asked questions about relevant anatomical structures related to course material previously *** the sessions,participants were asked to evaluate the classes on their self-reported exam preparedness in improving mSK anatomy knowledge,PA levels,and mental *** participants completed surveys;a majority agreed that the classes increased understanding of mSK concepts(90.0%)and activity levels(97.7%).many(70.0%)felt that the classes helped reduce *** majority of respondents(90.0%)agreed that the classes contributed to increased feelings of social ***,medical students saw benefit in PA based interventions to supplement mSK course *** with increasing activity levels and promoting health behaviours,integrating PA into medical curriculum may improve comprehension of learning material,alleviate stress and foster social connectivity among medical students.

Landslide Vulnerable Zones Based on Engineering Geological Assessment, Case Study: Wonotopo Area, Gebang District, Purworejo Regency, Central Java, Indonesia

Landslide is one of the geological disasters that frequently occur on the natural slopes, often threatening community of the adjacent area. Therefore, it is necessary to hold engineering geological research and assessment in disaster-prone regions such as Gebang district of Purworejo Regency, Central Java Province, Indonesia. This research was conducted to determine and analyze the type of mass movements, factor of safety, potential landslide areas, vulnerable zonation, factors influencing the stability of the slope, and to propose the disaster mitigation recommendation. The methods applied in the research are surface geological mapping, physical soil-rock properties testing, engineering geological assessment and analysis, and Regulation of minister of Public Works of Republic of Indonesia number 22/PRT/m/2007, on Guidelines to Spatial Planning for Landslide Disaster Areas. To create information on the threats of land movements, a map on landslide potential zonation is developed by considering seven important aspects including: slope inclination, soil conditions, slope constituents, rainfall, slope water condition, seismicity, and vegetation or land use. The results show that, the landslide prone zone of the study area can be divided into 2 types, namely type B and type C. Landslide potential zone of type B involves high level of vulnerability and moderate level of vulnerability. meanwhile, the landslide potential zone of type C consists of high level of vulnerability and low level of vulnerability.

Prevalence and clinical significance of antiphospholipid antibodies among hospitalized COVID-19 patients

Objective:To describe the prevalence of antiphospholipid antibodies in coronavirus disease-19(COVID-19)and to find potential associations between antiphospholipid antibody positivity and clinical ***:From September to November 2020,clinical and laboratory data were collected from 50 COVID-19 patients hospitalized at Saiful Anwar General Hospital in malang,*** antibodies were measured by finding Ig m anti-β2 glycoprotein,lupus anticoagulant,and Ig m/Ig G *** characteristics,thrombotic events,ICU admission,and mortality during hospitalization were *** severity was defined by the Guidelines for the Prevention and Control of COVID-19,***:Among 50 patients,5 patients(10.0%)were positive for antiphospholipid antibodies:4 patients(80.0%)had Ig m anti-β2 glycoprotein and 1 patient had Ig G anti-cardiolipin(20.0%)and Ig m anti-cardiolipin(20.0%),none of lupus anticoagulant was *** antibodies were associated with anosmia(OR 8.1;95%CI 1.1-57.9;P=0.018),nausea and vomiting(OR 12.4;95%CI 1.2-122.6;P=0.010),diarrhea(OR 9.8;95%CI 1.3-70.9;P=0.010),cardiovascular disease(OR 1.4;95%CI 1.0-1.9;P=0.001),chronic kidney disease(OR 12.0;95%CI 1.6-90.1;P=0.05),acute coronary syndrome(OR 29.3;95%CI 2.0-423.7;P=0.001),moderate(OR 0.11;95%CI 0.01-1.10;P=0.031)and severe(OR 18.5;95%CI 1.8-188.4;P=0.002)disease severity,and in-hospital mortality(OR 8.1;95%CI 1.1-57.9;P=0.018).However,there is no correlation between the presence of antiphospholipid antibody and ICU ***:In summary,the prevalence of antiphospholipid antibodies in COVID-19 patients is low,mainly against Ig m anticardiolipin,and is associated with an acute coronary syndrome,gastrointestinal manifestations,moderate and severe disease severity,and increased risk of mortality.

The Relationship between Giant Goiter and Operative Complications: A Retrospective Study

Background: Thyroidectomy for giant goiter is a surgical challenge due to distorted and displaced anatomy. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between giant goiter and its operative complications. material and methods: A retrospective multicenter study of consecutive patients who had thyroid surgery was conducted, including 639 patients who undergone thyroidectomy in State hospital at Van and Corlu city—Turkey. Seven cases had giant goiter in the patients. Total thyroidectomy was performed all patients. Results: All patients were women. The mean weight of glands removed was 689 gr in giant goiter’s patients. Two operative complications had happened;right site injury of the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve had happened to one patient;hypocalcemia was happened to another one patient. In those two patients previously were operated partial thyroidectomy. Conclusions: Thyroidectomy for a massively enlarged goiter is technically challenging. The predominant operative complications were related to previously operate and the thyroid gland due to distorted and displaced anatomy. The surgical approach to such cases requires carefully preoperative evaluation and planning. Especially, using of intraoperative nerve monitoring is to be useful in these difficult cases which previously had undergone surgery.

In this work,an amorphous ZnO was coated on LiNi_(0.6)Co_(0.2)mn_(0.2)O_(2)(NCm)using a sol-gel strategy *** NCm coated with 1 wt.%Zn O and a thickness of about 3 nm exhibits an improved cycling performance,accompanied by a lower capacity fading(from 194.8 to 133.8 m Ah g^(-1),i.e.,68%)than that of the pristine one(i.e.,only 34%)after 300 cycles at 0.2 *** cyclic voltammetry(CV)and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS)indicate that the Zn O coating can improve extraction/insertion of Li+and inhibit the increase in impedance of the NCm cathode *** approach may benefit the performance improvement of the Ni-rich cathode materials in Lithium-ion batteries(LIBs).

Structural, elastic and electronic properties for m_2 XC (m=Ti and Cr, X=Ga and Al) phases from ab initio calculations

The first-principles study of the structural, elastic and electronic properties of the m2XC phases depending on the type of m transition metal （m are Ti and Cr） and on X （X are Ga and A1） was reported. The calculations are performed using the pseudo-potential plane-wave approach in both the local density and generalized gradient approximations. The elastic constants are calculated using the static finite strain technique. Features such as structural and elastic parameters, Debye tem- perature, sound velocities and their pressure dependence have been investigated. In agreement with experimental and previous theoretical findings, it is found that the compressibility along a and c axis depends on the valence electron concentration （VEC）. Correlations revealing the governing role of the X and m elements on the machinability indices of the material have been examined. The electronic properties have been discussed in terms of chemical bonding showing that bonding is due to md-Cp and md-Xp hybridizations. m-C bonds are stiffer than m-X ones and A1-Ti （Cr-C） bonds are stiffer than those corresponding to Ti-C （A1-Cr）. It is shown that the stiffness of the m-X and m-C bonds increases with increasing the number of VEC.
