Efficacy assessment of peracetic acid in the removal of synthetic 17α-ethinyl estradiol contraceptive hormone in wastewater

Increasing concerns have been raised on endocrine disrupting chemicals like the sex hormone 17 a-ethinylestradiol(EE2),the more since traditional wastewater(WW) treatments appear to be ineffective for their *** efficacy of the relatively novel disinfectant peracetic acid(PAA) in EE2 removal was evaluated,as well as its potential effects on WW quality *** treatments tested for EE2 removal were also evaluated in terms of toxicity,through the determination of biochemical responses(antioxidant enzymes,lipid peroxidation and vitellogenin induction) using zebrafish(Danio rerio) as a biological *** contact times less than 20 min appeared insufficient regardless of the PAA dose tested,but a 100% EE2 removal was attained at a PAA concentration of 15 mg/L with a contact time of20 *** suspended solids,chemical oxygen demand and pH in PAA treatments remained well within levels set in European legislation for WW ***2 induced signific ant increased vitellogenin(VTG) levels in both female and male fish,indic ating increased estrogenic activity,especially in males suggesting an endocrine disruption *** the addition of PAA(15 mg/L),however,VTG levels in both sexes returned to control *** this PAA treatment showed increased levels of the antioxidant enzyme catalase,the lipid peroxidation levels were similar or even lower than in *** the results suggest that the use of PAA appears a promising way forward as a less toxic alternative to chlorine disinfection with high efficiency in the removal of EDC like EE2.

Background： Nutrition is one of the most important factors that affect animal performance, and it therefore also impacts on financial results in beef systems. In this way, finding the best strategy for feeding supplements is of paramount importance. Aiming to evaluate the effect of supplement feeding strategies for beef cows in the last third of gestation, two experiments were conducted. In Experiment 1, 35 pregnant Nellore cows were assigned to a completely randomized design with four treatments： control, which received no supplement; supplementation for the last 30 d of gestation（30-d; 3.0 kg/d）; supplementation for the last 60 d of gestation（60-d; 1.5 kg/d）; or supplementation for the last 90 d of gestation（90-d; 1.0 kg/d）. All supplemented treatments received the same total amount of supplement throughout the experiment： 90 kg（20% of crude protein）. A second experiment（Experiment 2） was delineated to evaluate the effects of the amounts offered in Experiment 1 on intake and metabolism. Four multiparous pregnant Nellore cows were assigned to a 4 × 4 Latin square design, with periods of15 d ***： There was a linear effect of the number of days of supplementation on calving body weight（BW; P 〈 0.05）and a quadratic effect on BW change from parturition to d 31 post-calving（P 〈 0.05）, with cows on the 60-d strategy losing less BW post-calving. No difference was found in offspring birth BW（P 〉 0.10）. A significant linear effect on interval from parturition to conception（P 〈 0.05） was observed, with the highest calving to conception interval being observed in the 90-d strategy. The level of supplementation did not affect forage intake or neutral detergent fiber digestibility（P 〉 0.10）. Nitrogen excreted through urine tended to increase linearly with the level of supplementation（P 〈 0.10）.Conclusion： Providing 1.5 kg of supplement during the last 60 d of gestation improves cow performance after calving, reducing the magnitude of BW lost, and reduces the number of

Tissue engineering is an emerging field of science that focuses on creating suitable conditions for the regeneration of tissues. The basic components for tissue engineering involve an interactive triad of scaffolds, signaling molecules, and cells. In this context,stem cells(SCs) present the characteristics of selfrenewal and differentiation capacity, which make them promising candidates for tissue engineering. Although they present some common markers, such as cluster of differentiation(CD)105, CD146 and STRO-1, SCs derived from various tissues have different patterns in relation to proliferation, clonogenicity, and differentiation abilities in vitro and in vivo. Tooth-derived tissues have been proposed as an accessible source to obtain SCs with limited morbidity, and various tooth-derived SCs(TDSCs) have been isolated and characterized, such as dental pulp SCs, SCs from human exfoliated deciduous teeth, periodontal ligament SCs, dental follicle progenitor cells, SCs from apical papilla, and periodontal ligament of deciduous teeth SCs. However, heterogeneity among these populations has been observed, and the best method to select the most appropriate TDSCs for regeneration approaches has not yet been established. The objective of this review is to outline the current knowledge concerning the various types of TDSCs, and discuss the perspectives for their use in regenerative approaches.

The complete and incomplete fusion cross sections for ^(6)Li+^(209)Bi were measured using the in-beamγ-ray method around the Coulomb *** cross sections of(deuteron captured)incomplete fusion(ICF)products were re-quantified experimentally for this reaction *** results reveal that the ICF cross section is equivalent to that of complete fusion(CF)above the Coulomb barrier and dominant near or below the Coulomb barrier.A theoretical calculation based on the continuum discretized coupled channel(CDCC)method was performed for the aforementioned CF and ICF cross sections;the result is consistent with the *** universal fusion function(UFF)was also compared with the measured CF cross section for different barrier parameters,demonstrating that the CF suppression factor is significantly influenced by the choice of potential,which can reflect both dynamic and static effects of breakup on the fusion process.

AIm： To evaluate the differences that exist bet- ween peripheral and mesenteric serum levels of carcinoembryonic antigen （CEA） and cytokeratins in patients with colorectal adenocarcinoma. mETHODS： One hundred and thirty-eight patients with colorectal adenocarcinoma who underwent surgery at Hospital Sao Paulo （Discipline of Surgical Gastroenterology of UNIFESP-EPm） between December 1993 and march 2000 were retrospectively analyzed. Differences between CEA and cytokeratin （TPA-m） levels in peripheral blood （P） and in mesenteric blood （m） were studied. Associations were investigated between peripheral and mesenteric levels and the staging and histopathological variables （degree of cell differentiation, macroscopic appearance, tumor dimensions and presence of lymphatic and venous invasion）. RESULTS： Differences were observed in the numerical values of the marker levels： CEA （m）（39.10 mg/1 ± 121.19 mg/L） vs CEA （P）（38.5 mg/L ± 122.55 mg/L）, P 〈 0.05; TPA-m （m）（325.06 U/L ±527.29 U/L） vs TPA-m （P）（279.48 U/L ±455.81 U/L）, P 〈 0.01. The mesenteric CEA levels were higher in more advanced tumors （P 〈 0.01）, in vegetating lesions （34.44 mg/L ± 93.07 mg/L）（P 〈 0.01） and with venous invasion （48.41 mg/L ± 129.86 mg/L）（P 〈 0.05）. Peripheral CEA was higher with more advanced staging （P 〈 0.01）and in lesions with venous invasion （53.23 mg/L ± 258.57 mg/L）（P 〈 0.05）. The patients demonstrated increased mesenteric and peripheral TPA-m levels with more advanced tumors （P 〈 0.01 and P 〈 0.01） and in non-ulcerated lesions [530.45 U/L =1= 997.46 U/L （P 〈 0.05） and 457.95 U/L ± 811.36 U/L （P 〈 0.01）]. CONCLUSION： The mesenteric levels of the tumor markers CEA and cytokeratins were higher than the peripheral levels in these colorectal adenocarcinoma patients, Higher levels of these biologic tumor markers are associated with an advanced state of cancerous dissemination

The physical properties of the rock units associated with the rio Bonito Formation are presented in this study with the focus on modelling reservoir quality based on petrophysics-derived parameters to evaluate CO_(2)storage *** involves the modelling of the reservoir depths,thicknesses,flow zone indicators(FZI),and effective permeability(Keff)and presenting the CO_(2)storage efficiency factors peculiar to the rock units of the study *** results presented by this study for the stated objectives are not quite common in the *** values range from 200 mD to higher than 2000 mD,and FZI values are generally above 1.0 mm and up to 13.0 mm within the portions covered by the drilled *** sandstone units recorded are up to 20 m thick in some *** Keff and FZI models indicate the sandstone reservoirs as permeable units to support the injection and circulation of CO_(2)within the potential reservoir units of the rio Bonio Formation across São Paulo *** from some points in the southeastern part of the study location,where the rio Bonito are delineated at depths less than 800 m(minimum CO_(2)storage depth based on best practices),other portions are deeper,ranging from 950 m to 3500 ***-bedded layers will affect the integrity of the rocks as CO_(2)storage tanks or reservoir seals/traps/overburden within the *** bed thicknesses are up to 20 m in some ***,hybrid CO_(2)reservoir units are feasible,especially in portions where thin siltstone layers are sandwiched between sandstone units to provide considerable thicknesses based on CO_(2)storage *** current study shows that useable areas considering reservoir thickness,depth,and other physical qualities will significantly control the CO_(2)storage efficiency of the study *** studies featuring a detailed geophysical exploration of the site to confirm the availability and saturations of preexisting fluid(hydrocarbon and water)are encouraged
