The prostate is an accessory sex gland that develops under precise androgenic control. It is known that hormonal imbalance may disrupt its development predisposing this gland to develop diseases during aging. Although the hypothesis regarding earlier origins of prostate diseases was proposed many years ago, the mechanisms underlying this complex phenomenon are poorly understood. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the prostates of old male gerbils exposed to testosterone during intrauterine and postnatal life using morphological, biometrical, stereological, Kariometric, immunohistochemical, and immunofluorescence analyses. Our findings demonstrate that prenatal and pubertal exposure to testosterone increases the susceptibility to the development of prostate diseases during aging. The presence of a more proliferative gland associated with foci of adenomatous hyperplasia in animals exposed to testosterone during the prenatal and pubertal phase show that the utero life and the pubertal period are important phases for prostatic morphophysiology establishment, which is a determinant for the health of the gland during aging. Therefore, these findings reinforce the idea that prostate disease may result from hormonal disruptions in early events during prostate development, which imprint permanently on the gland predisposing it to develop lesions in later stages of life.

Aims Climate and soil are among the most important factors determin-ing variation in tree communities,but their effects have not been thoroughly elucidated to date for many vegetation *** this study,we evaluate how climate and soil gradients affect gradients of vegetation composition,species diversity and dominance,structure and functional traits(seed mass and wood density)using over 327000 trees in 158 sites distributed along environmental gradients in the transitions among the Atlantic forest,Cerrado and Caatinga in minas Gerais State(mG),Brazil(nearly 600000 km2).methods Gradients in species,genus and family abundance in addition to basal area,stem density,species diversity(Fisher’s alpha),domin-ance percentage,seed mass and wood density were correlated using multiple regressions with environmental variables,as summarized in four principal component analysis axes(two climatic-precipi-tation seasonality and temperature range-and two edaphic-soil fertility and soil moisture).Additionally,ordinary kriging maps were used to better illustrate the *** Findings multiple regression models indicate that all variables but domin-ance percentage were affected by one or more of the environmental gradients,but the average R2 was low(26.25%).Kriging maps rein-forced the patterns observed in the regression *** seasonality and soil moisture gradients were the most important gra-dients affecting vegetation *** finding suggests that water availability is an important determinant of vegetation features in these vegetation transitions.

A comprehensive understanding of the complex biogeochemical interactions between organic matter and persistent contaminants in the suspended matter is vital for ecoefficient estuary ***,little is known regarding aeration effects in suspended particulate ***,this study aimed to investigate the effects of aeration on the suspended matter from a Tropical and Eutrophic estuarine *** water with 60 g/L of suspended particulate matter(SPm)was collected from Guanabara Bay,rio de Janeiro,Brazil,transferred to experimental boxes and aerated for 61 *** aggregates monitoring included abiotic variables measurements and,determination of total organic matter(TOm),biopolymers composition,bacterial activity,trace metals,and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)*** aeration enhanced dissolved oxygen(DO)concentration and the redox potential(Eh).However,from days 0 to 61 the predominant bacterial activities were denitrification and *** transport system activity increased after day 10,and aerobic activity was detected after day *** summary,aeration increased aerobic bacterial activity,lipids(LIP)and trace metal concentrations,although diminished protein/carbohydrate ratio and PAH *** metals concentration(Ni,Pb,Cu,Cr,mn,and Fe)were the highest on day 19 when the p H was *** presented toxic values(Cu>20.0μg/g).The p H showed a strong negative correlation with Eh(r=-0.94;pment(p H≤5.9)in marine ecosystems with high loads of toxic trace metals is unsafe for ***,managers must be aware of the environmental and biological risks of introducing the aeration technique into a eutrophic marine environment.

The Impact of Sociodemographic and Health Variables on Self-Care of Subjects Receiving Hemotransfusion

This study analyzed the relationship between self-care in subjects who received a blood transfusion in a university hospital with their sociodemographic and health conditions. A descriptive and exploratory research with a qualitative approach was carried out in the Transfusion Ambulatory sector of the University Hospital in Niterói, rio de Janeiro from July to November of 2014 with a sample size of 12 patients. Data were collected through a questionnaire of semi-structured questions;content analysis was based on the thematic approach. Sociodemographic data from subjects who received a blood transfusion were evaluated with respect to the education they received regarding self-care at home as well as their emotional balance in facing the health-disease process and their perspective on their quality of life. Educating subjects who receive blood transfusions requires that the medical professionals have an understanding of their patient’s socioeconomic and cultural condition. This information will contribute to a better understanding of self-care when blood transfusion is necessary.

Glutamate excitotoxicity has been postulated as a putative mechanism involved in the physiopathology of glaucoma, a disease that can cause retinal cell damage. Thus, the modulation of glutamatergic parameters is a putative therapeutic target to prevent excitotoxic retinal injury. Here, we investigated the effect of dietary omega-3 fatty acids (w3) in the retinal glutamate transport system in basal and ischemic conditions. Female Wistar rats were divided into two groups: w3 diet (w3 group) and w3 deficient-diet (D group). Their pups, at 60 days old, were used for the experiments. Retinal ischemia, a mechanism involved in the physiopathology of glaucoma, was induced by high intraocular pressure (HIOP, 140 180 mmHg for 45 min) to impair retinal blood flow. Analyses were performed 7 days after ischemia. The D group showed a decreased glutamate uptake in basal conditions and after HIOP when compared to the w3 group. After HIOP, there was a decrease in glutamate uptake in the D group that was not observed in the w3 group (p mate transporters, the w3 group presented higher levels of GLT-1 compared to the D group in basal and ischemic conditions. After HIOP, EAAC1 was increased in both groups, while GLT-1 increased only in the D group, compared to basal levels. GLAST and EAAT5 presented no alterations. The modulation of the glutamatergic system by dietary w3 fatty acids points to a potential mechanism by which w3 PUFAs exert beneficial effects in the retina.

Air pollution has become a major problem in urban areas due to increasing industrialization and *** this study ambient concentrations of Pm1 and metal concentrations as well as source contributions were identified and quantified by using Positive matrix Factorization(PmF)in receptor modeling in the metropolitan Area of Porto Alegre,*** Pm1 samples were collected on PTFE filters from december 2012 to december 2014 in two sampling *** ion and trace element concentrations were *** average concentrations were 12.8 and 15.2μg/m^(3) for Canoas and Sapucaia do Sul sites,*** ion contributions of Pm1 were secondary pollutants such as sulfate and *** elements,especially Cu,Pb,Zn,Cd,and Ni also made important contributions which are directly associated with anthropogenic *** results show significantly higher levels in winter than in *** of the Pm1 and the analyzed Pm species and elements originated from anthropogenic sources,especially road traffic,combustion processes and industrial activities,which are grouped in 7 major contributing sources.A back-trajectory analysis showed that the long-range transport of pollutants was not relevant in relation to the contribution to Pm1 and metal *** work highlights the importance of urban planning to reduce human health exposure to traffic and industrial emissions,combined with awareness-raising actions for citizens concerning the impact of indoor sources.

The state of Pará, located in the Amazon region of Brazil, has observed in recent years an increase in cocoa (Theobroma cacao) cultivation and has become the largest producer in Brazil. Due to its physiological characteristics, cacao is cultivated in native forests understory or under the shade produced by fast-growing native tree species, serving as an important species for restoration of degraded areas. However, mapping and monitoring cocoa plantation using optical sensor images is a challenge given its botanical and arboreal characteristics that can be confused with other native species at various stages of secondary regrowth. Agroforestry systems are important components of sustainable production in the Amazon and our work sought to better describe the evolution of cocoa plantations in terms of their historical expansion, farming properties practices, land use transitions and fire regimes. Our findings to analyze the relationships between cocoa plantations and hotspots, data from the INPE’s reference satellite between the years 2004 to 2020 were used in this study, polygons classified as cocoa areas, generated by the mapCacau research project, were used, in a total of 69,904 hectares distributed throughout the state of Pará. Finally, we used the protected areas’ official limits in the State of Pará to analyze the plantations’ occurrence in regions in discordance with environmental legislation. The data show that cocoa-producing properties are statistically fewer than non-producing properties, as well as having lower deforestation rates. In our study, we observed that 52,778 hectares (88.87%) of the cocoa area planted had already been deforested by the year 2008—the threshold of deforestation defined by Brazil’s Forest Code. It was also possible to verify that approximately 20,900 hectares continue to be mapped as forest by PROdeS, despite our field data identifying cocoa plantations shaded by explored forest in these areas. Effect of Carbon Fillers in Ultrahigh molecular Weight Polyethylene matrix Prepared by Twin-Screw Extrusion

Oxidized (GO) and expanded (G-Exp) graphite were employed to prepare composites with ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHmWPE) matrix using masterbatches of polyethylene with different compositions. The materials and a blend of UHmWPE/HDPE were prepared by extrusion and their properties were evaluated. The effect of carbon fillers on the crystalline structure, thermo dynamic-mechanical (DmTA) and thermal properties (melting and crystallization temperatures) of the composites were discussed. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) measurements showed that the addition of masterbatch with GO and G-Exp significantly increased the crystallite size of composites, increasing the temperatures of melting, degradation, glass transition and the degree of crystallinity of polyethylene. DmTA analysis indicated the storage and loss moduli of composites in relation to neat UHmWPE, the blend and UHmWPE/composites. SEm micrographs showed a flatter, continuous and uniform surface meaning a compact lamellar structure. The present work resulted in interesting findings on the effects of GO on the crystalline structures, mechanical and thermal properties of UHmWPE, which can lead to generalizations useful for future work.

The COVID-19 pandemic has posed a serious threat to global mental *** lines of evidence suggest that there is a varying yet considerable increase in mental health issues among the general population and vulnerable groups.12 The aftermath is obscure and speculative from a social,economic,individual and public mental health *** published studies support the existence of an emotional epidemic curve,describing a high probability of an increase in the burden of mental health issues in the post-pandemic era.34 Furthermore,previous major public health emergencies showed that more than half of the population devel-oped mental health problems and required mental health intervention.45 There is,therefore,an urgent need to reorganise existing mental health services to address the current unmet needs for mental health and to prepare for future challenges in the postpandemic era in terms of prevention and management.

S53G SNP in Cathepsin B: Can Be Used as a molecular Biomarker to Breast Cancer?

Cathepsin B (CTS B) is a proteolytic enzyme that participates in several important biological processes. However, when it is altered can be involved in development of breast cancer, a disease with high incidence and mortality rate among women. many studies have shown a correlation between high CTS B expression and breast tumor. Furthermore, it has been shown that the SNP rs1803250 (S53G) leads to structural and functional changes in protein that can make it pathogenic. The present study aimed to evaluate a possible association of SNP rs1803250 (S53G) with breast cancer. For this, real-time PCR was performed on a sample collected in the State of Pará, with 127 patients and 122 controls. The SNP frequency in this region was 0.12, according to a research project in progress that aims to identify Amerindians molecular alterations. This indicates that the SNP is found in region with a distribution close to worldwide frequency of 0.09. Our results showed that the SNP was in Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium in collected sample, but C variant allelic frequency was 0.08 in both patients and control groups, which is extremely similar to global average. moreover, homozygotes CC was not found in the sample and SNP genotypes frequency in patients and control groups was not significantly different. In addition, statistical analysis showed that the SNP did not have to correlate with tumor subtypes nor with tumor staging. Therefore, according to the analyzed sample, the SNP rs1803250 has no association with breast cancer and it cannot be considered a molecular biomarker for breast cancer.
