What can genomics offer to aquaculture and fisheries?The definition of Genomics,retrieval of biological meaning from large sets of DNA and/or RNA sequences present in organisms,highlights the potential benefits that can be accrued from this burgeoning *** continuous advances in sequencing technologies and bioinformatic tools,in particular in the last decade,enabled the harnessing of large amounts of genome-wide data from nonmodel organisms which can be used to address both fundamental and applied questions of fisheries,aquaculture and ecology(Abdelrahman et al.,2017).Genomics informed management is now considered absolutely essential if aquaculture and fisheries are to achieve their promise of making a significant contribution to sustainable food security,as the world demand for high quality protein continues to increase(Abdelrahman et al.,2017;Bernatchez et al.,2017;Yanez,Newman,&Houston,2015).However,although genomics approaches have become more common their practical use to improve fisheries management and aquaculture production still has not fulfilled its promise,despite overwhelming evidence of its advantages and benefits(Bernatchez et al.,2017;Garner et al.,2016;B.;Louro,Power,&Canario,2014).Among the possible solutions to stimulate wider application of genomics knowledge are the need for greater communication among fishery scientists,geneticists,fishery managers,and also better communication of the potential of genomics approaches and the results to stakeholders by adoption of a clear and understandable dialogue(Bernatchez et al.,2017).While this is still a stumbling block that needs to be addressed in multiple contexts,it is equally important that more genomics-based papers are published in journals of a multidisciplinary nature such as Aquaculture and *** special issue is a small but a significant step towards communicating the power of genomics to a wide potential user community.

Biliary tract schwannoma:A rare cause of obstructive jaundice in a young patient

Schwannoma is a tumor derived from Schwann cells which usually arises in the upper extremities, trunk, head and neck, retroperitoneum, mediastinum, pelvis, and peritoneum. However, it can arise in the gastro-intestinal tract, including biliary tract. We present a 24-year-old male patient with obstructive jaundice, whose investigation with computed tomography abdomen showed focal wall thickening in the common hepatic duct, difficult to differentiate with hilar adenocarcinoma. He was diagnosed intraoperatively schwannoma of common bile duct and treated with local resection. The patient recovered well without signs of recurrence of the lesion after 12 mo. We also reviewed the common bile duct schwannoma related in the literature and evaluated the difficulty in pre and intraoperative differential diagnosis with adenocarcinoma hilar. Resection is the treatment of choice for such cases and the tumordid not recur in any of the resected cases.

Intake,digestibility and nitrogen utilization in cattle fed tropical forage and supplemented with protein in the rumen,abomasum,or both

Background： There is little information in the tropics with regard the comparative understanding of how an increased nitrogen supply in the rumen or in the intestines affects efficiency of nitrogen utilization in cattle. This study evaluated the effects of supplementation with nitrogenous compounds in the rumen, abomasum, or both on intake, digestibility and the characteristics of nitrogen utilization in cattle fed tropical forage. Four rumen- and abomasum-fistulated Nellore bulls （227 ± 11 kg） were used. Four treatments were evaluated： control, ruminal supplementation （230 g/d of supplemental protein in the rumen）, abomasal supplementation （230 g/d of supplemental protein in the abomasum）, and ruminal and abomasal supplementation （115 g/d protein in both the rumen and the abomasum）. The basal forage diet consisted of Tifton 85 hay with a crude protein （CP） level of 78.4 g/kg dry matter. Casein was used as a supplement. The experiment was conducted using a 4 x 4 Latin square. Results： There were no differences between the treatments （P 〉 0.10） with regard to forage intake. The intake and tota digestibility of CP increased （P 〈 0.01） with supplementation. The nitrogen balance in the body increased （P 〈 0.01） and muscle protein mobilization decreased （P 〈 0.01） with supplementation, regardless of the supplementation site. The efficiency of nitrogen utilization did not differ among the treatments （P 〉 0.10）. Conclusions： The supplementation of cattle fed tropical forage with protein in the rumen, abomasum, or both similarly increased the nitrogen accretion in animal, which reflects improvements on nitrogen status in animal body.

Somatostatin(SST)plays important roles in growth and *** teleost fishes six SST encoding genes(sst1 to sst6)have been identified although few studies have addressed their *** we aim to determine the function of the teleost specific sst4 in the zebrafish.A CRISPR/Cas9 sst4 zebrafish mutant with loss of function(sst4−/−)was produced which grew significantly faster and was heavier at the onset of gonadal maturation than the wild type(WT).Consistent with their faster growth,liver igf1,igf2a and igf2b expression was significantly upregulated in the sst4−/−fish compared to the *** examination of the ovaries and testis indicated that sst4−/−fish had slightly delayed testicular gametogenesis compared to the *** lower expression of igf3,amh,insl3,hsd17b3,hsd11b2,hsd20b,cyp11b and cyp17 was consistently observed in the sst4−/−*** contrast,the ovaries had lower expression of igf1,igf2a and cyp19a1a but increased expression of igf2b and *** gonadotrophin beta subunits(fshb and lhb)in the brain were downregulated indicating the brain-pituitary-gonadal axis was downregulated in the sst4−/−fish and suggesting that the steroid production is compromised in the maturing *** addition,analysis of sst1 and sst3 mRNA levels in sst4−/−fish suggests a dosage compensation effect of sst1 in the brain and ***,the results from the zebrafish sst4−/−line support the idea that sst4 is involved in the regulation of igf signalling,somatic growth and reproduction since steroidogenesis and gametogenesis at pubertal onset were compromised.

Over the past few years,there has been an emerging number of new psychoactive *** drugs are frequently mentioned as“legal highs”,“herbal highs”,“bath salts”and“research chemicals”.They are mostly sold and advertised on online forums and on the dark *** emerging new psychoactive substances are designed to mimic the effects of psychoactive groups,which are often abused *** synthetic opioids are a new trend in this context and represent an alarming threat to public *** the wide number of fatalities related to these compounds reported within the last few years,it is an important task to accurately identify these compounds in biologic matrices in order to administer an effective treatment and reverse the respiratory depression caused by opioid related *** dealing with fentanyl intoxication cases should consider that it could,in fact,be a fentanyl *** this reason,it is a helpful recommendation to include synthetic opioids in the routine toxicological screening procedures,including analysis in alternative matrices,if available,to investigate poly-drug use and possible tolerance to *** address this public health problem,better international collaboration,effective legislation,effective investigation,control of suspicious“research chemicals”online forums and continuous community alertness are *** article aims to review diverse reported fatalities associated with new synthetic opioids describing them in terms of pharmacology,metabolism,posology,available forms,as well as their toxic effects,highlighting the sample procedures and analytical techniques available for their detection and quantification in biological matrices.
