AIm: To search tools of high blood pressure in the model of nitric oxide (NO)-defective hypertension, and the study focused on the effect of rilmenidine, agonist of imidazoline receptors, which was suggested to modulate central sympathetic outflow. mETHODS: Three experimental groups, each consisting of 7 rats, were used: (I) rats with inhibition of NO synthase (NOS) by NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAmE) 40 mg·kg-1·d-1 for 4 weeks in drinking water, (II) rats with inhibited NOS as in group I , plus agonist of imidazoline receptors rilmenidine 3 mg·kg-1·d-1 for 4weeks by gavage, and(III) control rats. Systolic blood pressure wasmeasured weekly noninvasively. At the end of experiment aortic ring isometric tension was followed, NOS expression (aorta, left ventricle), and NOS activity (left ventricle and brain) were determined. RESULTS: In the group I systolic blood pressure in- creased significantly, aortic ring relaxation to acetylcholine was significantly attenuated. Rilmenidine administered simultaneously with L-NAmE (group II) prevented the increase of blood pressure which did not differ significantly from control values; aortic ring relaxation to acetylcholine did not differ from control. No change in NOS expres- sion (aorta and left ventricle) was found in groups I and II. Significant decline in NOS activity (left ventricle and brain) wasfound in groups I and II. CONCLUSION: Rilmenidinehas aremarkable role inNO-defective hypertension, possibly by inhibiting central sympathetic outflow and by affecting receptors in vascular smooth muscle also. The prime cause of hypertension in this experimental model - the compromised production of NO due to inhibition of NOS - was not affected by rilmenidine.

AIm To investigate the intestinal segment-specific effects of diabetes and insulin replacement on the density of different subpopulations of submucous neurons. mETHODS Ten weeks after the onset of type 1 diabetes samples were taken from the duodenum, ileum and colon of streptozotocin-induce diabetic, insulin-treated diabetic and sex-and age-matched control rats. Whole-mount preparations of submucous plexus were prepared from the different gut segments for quantitative fluorescent immunohistochemistry. The following double-immunostainings were performed: neuronal nitric oxide synthase(n NOS) and Hu C/D, heme oxygenase(HO) 1 and peripherin, as well as HO2 and peripherin. The density of n NOS-, HO1-and HO2-immunoreactive(IR) neurons was determined as a percentage of the total number of submucous neurons. RESULTS The total number of submucous neurons and the proportion of n NOS-, HO1-and HO2-IR subpopulations were not affected in the duodenal ganglia of control, diabetic and insulin-treated rats. While the total neuronal number did not change in either the ileum or the colon, the density of nitrergic neurons exhibited a 2-and 3-fold increase in the diabetic ileum and colon, respectively, which was further enhanced after insulin replacement. The presence of HO1-and HO2-IR submucous neurons was robust in the colon of controls(38.4%-50.8%), whereas it was significantly lower in the small intestinal segments(0.0%-4.2%, P m and a decrease in the colon of the proportion of HO-IR neurons in insulin-treated diabetic animals. CONCLUSION Diabetes and immediate insulin replacement induce the most pronounced region-specific alterations of n NOS-, HO1-and HO2-IR submucous neuronal density in the distal parts of the gut.

magnesium alloy EZ10 （mg-RE-Zn） was deformed in tension at temperatures from 20 up to 520℃. A rapid decrease of the yield and tensile strength with temperature was observed at temperatures higher than 300 ℃. On the other hand, ductility of sam-ples rapidly increased in the same temperature range. Light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy was used to reveal the rea-son for these behaviours. Intermetallic particles in grain boundaries are responsible for excellent mechanical properties at lower tem-peratures. Diffusional processes occurring at temperatures higher than 300 ℃ significantly influenced the deformation mechanism as well as the fracture character.

AIm： To determine the plasma carnitine ester profile in adult patients with ulcerative culitis （UC） and compared with healthy control subjects. mETHOD： Using ESI triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry, the carnitine ester profile was measured in 44 patients with UC and 44 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. RESULTS： There was no significant difference in the fasting free carnitine level between the patients with UC and the healthy controls. The fasting propionyl- （0.331 ± 0.019 vs 0.392 ± 0.017 μmol/L）, butyryl- （0.219 ± 0.014 vs 0.265 ± 0.012）, and isovalerylcarniUne （0.111 ± 0.008 vs 0.134 ± 0.008） levels were decreased in the UC patients. By contrast, the level of octanoyl- （0.147 ± 0.009 vs 0.114 ± 0.008）, decanoyl- （0.180 ± 0.012 vs 0.137 ± 0.008）, myristoyl- （0.048 ± 0.003 vs 0.039 ± 0.003）, palmitoyl- （0.128 ± 0.006 vs 0.109 ± 0.004）, palmitoleyl- （0.042±0.003 vs 0.031 ± 0.002） and oleylcarnitine （0.183 ± 0.007 vs 0.163 ± 0.007; P 〈 0.05 in all comparisons） were increased in the patients with UC. CONCLUSION： Our data suggest selective involvement of the carnitine esters in UC patients, probably due to their altered metabolism.
