Alleviated mucosal and neuronal damage in a rat model of Crohn's disease

The consumption of marine macroalgae has been linked with health benefits,albeit some actions,including genoprotection,remain ***,we evaluated the genoprotective potential of a mixture of Ulva rigida,Fucus vesiculosus and Gracilaria gracilis,through direct consumption or via indirect intake using fish(Sparus aurata)as a vector of algal ***(mus musculus)were subjected to a 1-month dietary supplementation with 5%of macroalgae mix or 10%of fillet of fish previously fed with an algae-supplemented aquafeed(for comparison purposes,10%supplementation with fillet of fish standardly fed was also considered).Thereafter,mice were challenged by the genotoxicant methyl methanesulfonate(mmS),and the genetic damage was evaluated through the micronuclei ***,a wider evaluation was carried out encompassing the assessment of energy metabolism,haematological and histological parameters,as well as growth *** unequivocally protected against mmS-induced *** activity profile of hepatic lactate and isocitrate dehydrogenases promoted by the supplemented diets reflected an improved energy *** properties were not transferred via fish fed with the algae-supplemented aquafeed,though the transference of phytocomponents with beneficial properties(*** balance improvement)should not be ***,these findings highlighted the genoprotection afforded by marine macroalgae,likely promoted by desmutagenic factors,reinforcing their definition as functional *** possibility of using fish as an indirect source of algae-borne phytocomponents proved to be plausible and worthy of further investigations.

Bone disorders in experimentally induced liver disease in growing rats

AIm： To investigate the change of bone parameters in a new model of experimentally induced liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma （HCC） in growing rats. mETHODS： Fischer-344 rats （n = 55） were used. Carbon tetrachloride （CCh）, phenobarbital （PB）, and a single diethylnitrosamine （DEN） injection were used. Animals were killed at wk 8 and 16. Bone mineral content, femoral length, cortical index （quotient of cortical thickness and whole diameter） and ultimate bending load （Fmax） of the femora were determined. The results in animals treated with DEN＋PB＋CCh （DPC, n = 21） were com- pared to those in untreated animals （UNT, n = 14） and in control group treated only with DEN＋PB （DP, n = 20）. RESULTS： Fatty liver and cirrhosis developed in each DPC-treated rat at wk 8 and HCC was presented at wk 16. No skeletal changes were found in this group at wk 8, but each parameter was lower （P〈0.05 for each） at wk 16 in comparison to the control group. Neither fatty liver nor cirrhosis was observed in DP-treated animals at any time point. Femoral length and Fmax values were higher （P〈0.05 for both） in DP-treated animals at wk 8 compared to the UNT controls. However, no difference was found at wk 16. CONCLUSION： Experimental liver cirrhosis and HCC are accompanied with inhibited skeletal growth, reduced bone mass, and decreased mechanical resistance in growing rats. Our results are in concordance withthe data of other studies using different animal models. A novel finding is the transiently accelerated skeletal growth and bone strength after a 8-wk long phenobarbital treatment following diethylnitrosamine injection.

Involvement of serum retinoids and Leiden mutation in patients with esophageal, gastric, liver, pancreatic, and colorectal cancers in Hungary

AIm: To analyze the serum levels of retinoids and Leiden mutation in patients with esophageal, gastric, liver,pancreatic, and colorectal ***: The changes in serum levels of retinoids (vitamin A, α- and β-carotene, α- and β-cryptoxanthin,zeaxanthin, lutein) and Leiden mutation were measured by high liquid performance chromatography (HPLC)and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in 107 patients (70 males/37 females) with esophageal (0/8), gastric (16/5), liver (8/7), pancreatic (6/4), and colorectal (30/21including 9 patients suffering from in situ colon cancer)cancer. Fifty-seven healthy subjects (in matched groups)for controls of serum retinoids and 600 healthy blood donors for Leiden mutation were ***: The serum levels of vitamin A and zeaxanthin were decreased significantly in all groups of patients with gastrointestinal (GI) tumors except for vitamin A in patients with pancreatic cancer. No changes were obtained in the serum levels of α- and β-carotene,α- and β-cryptoxanthin, zeaxanthin, lutein in patients with GI cancer. The prevalence of Leiden mutation significantly increased in all groups of patients with GI ***: Retinoids (as environmental factors)are decreased significantly with increased prevalence of Leiden mutation (as a genetic factor) in patients before the clinical manifestation of histologically different (planocellular and hepatocellular carcinoma, and adenocarcinoma) GI cancer.

The Effect of Inorganic Nanoadditives on the Thermal, mechanical and UV Radiation Barrier Properties of Polypropylene Fibres

The objective of this study of modified polypropylene (PP) fibres using nanoadditives (nano-CaCO3 and Cloisite 30B) was to determine the influence of these additives on thermal and mechanical properties, but especially on the barrier properties of the nanocomposite fibres against UV radiation. The DSC data obtained from measurements of PP/CaCO3 or PP/C30B nanocomposite fibres were used for determination of the constants n and K of the Avrami equation and in the estimation of other thermal properties of the fibres, such as their crystallization half-time t1/2, rate of crystallization t1/2, the necessary time for maximum crystallization tmax and free energy per unit area of surface in the lamella perpen-dicular to the axis of a high-molecular chain se. The nano-CaCO3 or Closite 30B fillers (pre-treated separately in three different solvents: glycerine, acetone and water) did not influence the melting temperatures but caused an increase in PP crystallization temperatures in comparison with the pure PP fibres. The pre-treatments of nanoadditives resulted in increase of n, K, t1/2 values and decrease of t1/2, tmax as well as the values of free surface energies per unit area of the modified PP fibres. There was also observed a decrease in the mechanical properties, however, there was an increase of barrier properties against UV radiation of nanocomposite PP fibres in comparison with neat PP fibres, which was one of the main objectives of the study.

BACKGROUND The importance of the neuronal microenvironment has been recently highlighted in gut region-specific diabetic enteric neuropathy. Regionally distinct thickening of endothelial basement membrane(Bm) of intestinal capillaries supplying the myenteric ganglia coincide with neuronal damage in different intestinal segments. Accelerated synthesis of matrix molecules and reduced degradation of matrix components may also contribute to the imbalance of extracellular matrix dynamics resulting in Bm thickening. Among the matrix degrading proteinases, matrix metalloproteinase 9(mmP9) and its tissue inhibitor(TImP1) are essential in regulating extracellular matrix *** To evaluate the intestinal segment-specific effects of diabetes and insulin replacement on ganglionic Bm thickness, mmP9 and TImP1 *** Ten weeks after the onset of hyperglycaemia gut segments were taken from the duodenum and ileum of streptozotocin-induced diabetic, insulin-treated diabetic and sex-and age-matched control rats. The thickness of Bm surrounding myenteric ganglia was measured by electron microscopic morphometry. Wholemount preparations of myenteric plexus were prepared from the different gut regions for mmP9/TImP1 double-labelling fluorescent immunohistochemistry. Post-embedding immunogold electron microscopy was applied on ultrathin sections to evaluate the mmP9 and TImP1 expression in myenteric ganglia and their microenvironment from different gut segments and conditions. The mmP9 and TImP1 messenger ribonucleic acid(m RNA) level was measured by quantitative polymerase chain *** Ten weeks after the onset of hyperglycaemia, the ganglionic Bm was significantly thickened in the diabetic ileum, while it remained intact in the duodenum. The immediate insulin treatment prevented the diabetes-related thickening of the Bm surrounding the ileal myenteric ganglia. How can stream bank erosion be predicted on small water courses?Veri?cation of BANCS model on the Kubrica watershed

The current paper deals with the evaluation of the BANCS erosion prediction model and its two componentsethe Bank Erosion Hazard Index（BEHI） and Near-Bank Stress（NBS） indices. To construct the erosion prediction curves, 18 experimental sections were established on the Kubrica Stream, district of Trencín, Slovakia. Each section was assessed through the NBS index and BEHI index and real annual bank erosion was measured using erosion toe pins. Subsequently, the relations between the BEHI and real annual bank erosion was assessed through regression and correlation analyses. The relation proved to be moderately strong, with the correlation coefficient（R） reaching 0.47. Further, the relation between the NBS index and real annual bank erosion was evaluated, which was also moderately strong, with R= *** on the measured data, two erosion prediction curves were constructed, the first for moderate BEHI, with R= 0.69 and coefficient of determination（R2） of 0.47 and the second for high BEHI with R=0.74 and R2= 0.55. The prediction curves were based on data from one year of measurements and can, therefore, be used only for discharges that occurred within that year and in the region where the model was developed. In the current case, according to runoff Curve Numbers（CN）, the real culmination discharge was Q ? 1.88 m3/s, which is roughly equivalent to 1.5-year recurrence interval flow（Q1.5）.

Catalytic Hydrogenation of Aromatic Compounds in the Liquid Phase

Peculiarities of a liquid phase hydrogenation, namely lower diffusivity of components influencing the reaction rate and deactivation of catalysts by leaching, are discussed. A focus is on hydrogenation of aromatic compounds, whereas the following processes are evaluated：（l） partial hydrogenation of benzene to cyclohexene; （2） hydrogenation of aniline; （3） hydrogenation of diphenylamine; （4） preparation of aniline from nitrobenzene; （5） hydrogenation of chloronitrobenzenes; （6） hydrogenation of 4-nitrosodiphenylamine and 4-nitrodiphenylamine mixture. Processes （1） and （6） are typically carried out in the water-oil system. Generally, this type of system allows reaching a higher selectivity to desired products. In the case of hydrogenation of 4-nitrosodiphenylamine and 4-nitrodiphenylamine mixture, the water phase extracts a water soluble catalyst; which is recycled and used for condensation of aniline and nitrobenzene. Problems of reaction kinetics, as well as catalysts deactivation are here discussed.

Novel agents and new therapeutic approaches for treatment of multiple myeloma

This review summarizes the therapeutic strategies and the drugs actually in development for the management of myeloma patients. multiple myeloma is caused by the expansion of monoclonal plasma cells and secretion of m-protein(immunoglobulins, Bence Jones protein and free light chains). multiple myeloma still remains an incurable disease with a high incidence rate in the elderly, despite the introduction of several new therapeutic agents(bortezomib, lenalidomide and thalidomide) which have changed its natural history. The high heterogeneity of this disease leads to large differences in clinical responses to treatments. Thus, the choice of the best treatment is a difficult issue. However, the introduction of new drugs has made it possible to achieve high response rates and good quality respons-es with long-term disease control. Interactions between tumor cells and their bone marrow microenvironment play a pivotal role in the development, maintenance, and progression of myeloma, inducing also drug resistance. These knowledges have improved treatment options, leading to the approval of new drugs which not only target the malignant cell itself, but also its microenvironment. These agents are in preclinical/early clinical evaluation and they appear to further improve disease control, but their use is still not approved outside of clinical trials.

E-commerce has been increasing rapidly and will obviously be more popular in the future. The growth of internet is believed to have given an impact on e-commerce’s growth in China because approximately thirty percent of Chinese alter to be active internet users. The trend is pointed out to the increase of e- commerce transaction value. This research aims to provide an insight to the Chinese e-commerce market by performing a forecast of internet users. Age, gender, and income, as part of demographic profiles, are selected since they are considered to positively influence the internet user’s online activity. Furthermore, this research also provides an analysis of guidelines for companies that want to enter the China e-commerce market. For the purpose of this research, time series analysis using ARImA model will be used as the research method. Overall, findings assert Chinese internet users seem to grow rapidly. male users are still predicted to the dominate market although, surprisingly, the result shows that male internet users are to go down gradually by 2015. In addition, the result shows that internet users who have high income are increasing. Therefore, it is indicated that luxury products become potential products to be marketed. Considering the overall phenomenon, it is likely that China will still continue to be a prospective e-commerce market in the future.
