Tuning mXenes Towards Their Use in Photocatalytic Water Splitting

Finding appropriate photocatalysts for solar-driven water(H_(2)O)splitting to generate hydrogen(H_(2))fuel is a challenging task,particularly when guided by conventional trial-and-error experimental ***,density functional theory(DFT)is used to explore the mXenes photocatalytic properties,an em.rging family of two-dimensional(2D)transition metal carbides and nitrides with chemical formula m_(n+1)X_(n)T_(x),known to be semiconductors when having T_(x)*** than 4,000 mXene structures have been screened,considering different compositional(m,X,T_(x),and n)and structural(stacking and termination position)factors,to find suitable mXenes with a bandgap in the visible region and band edges that align with the water-splitting half-reaction *** from bandgap analysis show how,in general,mXenes with n=1 and transition metals from group III present the most cases with bandgap and promising sizes,with C-mXenes being superior to *** band alignment calculations of candidate systems with a bandgap larger than 1.23 eV,the minimum.required for a water-splitting process,Sc_(2)CT_(2),Y_(2)CT_(2)(T_(x)=Cl,Br,S,and Se)and Y_(2)CI_(2)are highlighted as adequate photocatalysts.

Agriculture has a close relationship with nature,but it can also be the source of negative and permanent environmental *** use of pesticides in modern agriculture is a common practice,but their side effects on the environment cannot be *** this study,we evaluated a combination of solarization and ozonation techniques for the elimination of six amide pesticides(boscalid,chlorantraniliprole,cyflufenamid,fluopyram,napropamide,and propyzamide)in *** experiments were performed with four different soils to assess the efficiency of this methodology at different soil temperatures and ozone dosages under laboratory conditions,and then a greenhouse pot experiment was conducted under controlled conditions during *** days after the onset of the experiments,higher degradation percentages of amide pesticides were observed in ozonized soils than in other treated soils,particularly when ozone was applied at 10 cm soil *** results show that the utilization of ozonation,along with solarization,represents a valid method for degrading residues of the studied pesticides and suggest that this combined technology may be a promising tool for remediating pesticide-polluted soils.

Air pollution poses a health hazard in all ***,complete data on ambient particulate matter(Pm)concentrations are not available in all world *** data is already a valuable source of exposure data in epidemiological studies examining the relationship between temperature and ***,the performance of reanalysis data in assessing the short-term health effects of particulate air pollution remains *** assessed the performance of CAmS reanalysis(EAC4)data from the European Centre for medium.range Weather Forecasts,compared with daily Pm concentrations from field monitoring stations,to estimate short-term exposure to Pm with an aerodynamic diameter less than 10μm(Pm_(10))on daily m.rtality in 33 Spanish provincial capital cities using a two-stage time series regression *** shape of the Pm_(10)distribution varied substantially between Pm observations and CAmS global reanalysis of atmospheric composition(EAC4)reanalysis data,with correlation ranging from 0.21 to *** pooled m.rtality risk for a 10μg/m^(3)increase in Pm_(10)showed similar estimates using Pm concentrations{relative risks(rr)=1.007,95%confidence intervals(95%CI)=[1.002,1.011]}and EAC4 reanalysis data(rr=1.011,95%CI=[1.006,1.015]).However,the city-specific Pm_(10)beta coefficients estimated using Pm concentrations and EAC4 reanalysis data showed a low correlation(r=0.22).The use of reanalysis data should be approached with caution when assessing the association between particulate matter air pollution and health outcomes,particularly in cities with small populations.

We present a method to fabricate handcrafted thermoelectric devices on standard office paper *** devices are based on thin films of WS_(2),Te,and BP(P-type semiconductors)and TiS_(3)and TiS_(2)(N-type semiconductors),deposited by simply rubbing powder of these materials against *** thermoelectric properties of these semiconducting films revealed maximum Seebeck coefficients of(+1.32±0.27)mV K^(-1)and(-0.82±0.15)mV K^(-1)for WS_(2)and TiS_(3),***,Peltier elements were fabricated by interconnecting the P-and N-type films with graphite electrodes.A thermopower value up to 6.11 mV K^(-1)was obtained when the Peltier element were constructed with three *** findings of this work show proof-of-concept devices to illustrate the potential application of semiconducting van der Waals materials in future thermoelectric power generation as well as temperature sensing for low-cost disposable electronic devices.

Cannabinoids are lipophilic substances derived from Cannabis sativa that can exert a variety of effects in the human *** have been studied in cellular and animal models as well as in human clinical trials for their therapeutic benefits in several human *** of these include central nervous system(CNS)diseases and dysfunctions such as forms of epilepsy,multiple sclerosis,Parkinson’s disease,pain and neuropsychiatric *** addition,the endogenously produced cannabinoid lipids,endocannabinoids,are critical for normal CNS function,and if controlled or modified,may represent an additional therapeutic avenue for CNS *** review discusses in vitro cellular,ex vivo tissue and in vivo animal model studies on cannabinoids and their utility as therapeutics in multiple CNS *** addition,the review provides an overview on the use of cannabinoids in human clinical trials for a variety of CNS *** and endocannabinoids hold promise for use as disease modifiers and therapeutic agents for the prevention or treatment of neurodegenerative diseases and neurological disorders.

We propose a realistic topological p-n junction （TPNJ） by matching two Bi2Se3 （0001） slabs with opposite arrangements of planar twin boundary defects. The atomistic modeling of such a device leads to dislocation defects in the hexagonal lattice in several quintuple layers. Nevertheless, total energy calculations reveal that the interface relaxes, yielding a smooth geometrical transition that preserves the nearest-neighbors fcc-type geometry throughout these defect layers. The electronic, magnetic, and transport properties of the junction have then been calculated at the ab initio level under open boundary conditions, i.e., employing a thin-film geometry that is infinite along the electron transport direction. Indeed, a p-n junction is obtained with a built-in potential as large as 350 meV. The calculations further reveal the spin texture across the interface with unprecedented detail. As the main result, we obtain non-negligible transmission probabilities around the F point, which involve an electron spin-flip process while crossing the interface.
