Investigating how crop domestication and early farming mediated crop attributes, distributions, and interactions with antagonists may shed light on today's agricultural pest problems. crop domestication generally involved artificial selection for traits desirable to early farm.rs, for example, in creased productivity or yield, and enhanced qualities, though invariably it altered the interactions between crops and insects, and expanded the geographical ranges of crops. Thus, some studies suggest that with crop domestication and spread, insect populations on wild crop ancestors gave rise to pestiferous insect populations on crops. Here, we addressed whether the em.rgence of corn leafhopper (Dalbulus ma id is) as an agricultural pest may be associated with domestication and early spread of maize (Zea mays mays). We used AFLP m.rkers and mitochondrial cOI sequences to assess population genetic structuring and haplotype relationships among corn leafhopper samples from maize and its wild relative Zea diploperennis from multiple locations in mexico and Argentina. We uncovered seven corn leafhopper haplotypes contained within two haplogroups, one haplogroup containing haplotypes associated with maize and the other containing haplotypes associated with Z. diploperennis in a mountainous habitat. Within the first haplogroup, one haplotype was predominant across mexican locations, and another across Argentinean locations;both were considered pestiferous. We suggested that the divergence times of the maize-associated haplogroup and of the "pestiferous" haplotypes are correlated with the chronology of maize spread following its domestication. Overall, our results support a hypothesis positing that maize domestication favored corn leafhopper genotypes preadapted for exploiting maize so that they became pestiferous, and that with the geographical expansi on of maize farming, corn leafhopper colonized Z. diploperennis, a host exclusive to secluded habitats that serves as a refuge fo

An experimental study was carried out to estimate the effect of the lead impurities on the silver distribution in the phases formed in the lead blast furnace. Samples of sinter with different contents of cu, S, As and Sb were equilibrated under reducing atmosphere （p（cO）/p（cO2）=2.45） at 1573 K in a tube furnace and slowly cooled. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and microanalysis （SEm-EDS）. There were five immiscible phases：slag （caO, FeO and SiO2）, matte （S, cu and Fe）, speiss （As, Fe and cu）, cu-Sb phase and lead bullion （Pb, Ag, Sb, cu, etc）. The results showed that cu and Sb promote silver losses during the process since they form a liquid solution with higher silver solubility than liquid bullion. Sulfur and arsenic react with copper to form the matte and speiss phases, respectively. The effect of S and As is to reduce the amount of cu-Sb alloy and then the silver losses from the bullion.

Objective: To evaluate the cytotoxic effects of Spirulina platensis extracts on acute leukemia Kasumi-1 and chronic leukemia K-562 cancer cell ***: Various concentrations of Spirulina platensis extracts(0.25–50.00 mg/m L)obtained with different solvents were used to treat cell lines for 72 h. For cytotoxic effect studies, cell viability test with trypan blue solution, mTT assay and microscopic cytom.rphological assessment were ***: Spirulina extract obtained with 70% ethanol showed significant cytotoxicity in K562 and Kasumi-1 cell lines. With trypan blue solution, Ic_(50) values were found to be4.64 mg/m L for K-562 and 3.68 mg/m L for Kusumi-1 cell lines. Spirulina aqueous extract also showed cytotoxicity with trypan blue method, at a slightly higher dose; where Ic_(50) values were 12.68 mg/m L for K-562 and 2.13 mg/m L for Kusumi-1 cell lines. The Ic_(50) values were found 0.40 mg/m L for K-562 and 0.31 mg/m L for Kusumi-1 cell lines for the 70% ethanol extract according to the mTT assay. Spirulina extract obtained with water also showed cytotoxicity but the dose was a little higher where Ic_(50) values were15.77 mg/m L for K-562 and 9.44 mg/m L for Kusumi-1 cell lines. The effect of cytotoxicity with ethanol extract is quite comparable with that observed for cyclophosphamide, which is a chemical used as anticancer ***: The cytotoxicity exhibited by Spirulina extract to cancer cell lines might be due to the presence of phytopigments(carotenoids, chlorophyll, phycocyanin) as well as polysaccharides that were reported previously as constituents of the extract. So crude extracts of Spirulina can be used as a source to develop anticancer drugs.

AIm To compare the prevalence of chronic liver disease(cLD) risk factors in a representative sample of mexicanAm.ricans born in the United States(US) or mexico, to a sample of adults in *** Data for mexican-Am.ricans in the US were obtained from the 1999-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(NHANES), which includes persons of mexican origin living in the US(n = 4274). The NHANES sample was restricted to mexican-Am.rican participants who were 20 years and older, born in the US or mexico, not pregnant or breastfeeding, and with medical *** data in mexico were obtained from the 2004-2013 Health Worker cohort Study in cuernavaca, mexico(n =9485). The following known risk factors for liver disease/cancer were evaluated: elevated aminotransferase levels(elevated alanine aminotransferase was defined as > 40 IU/L for males and females; elevated aspartate aminotransferase was defined as > 40 IU/L for males and females), infection with hepatitis B or hepatitis c,metabolic syndrome, high total cholesterol, diabetes,obesity, abdominal obesity, and heavy alcohol use. The main independent variables for this study classified individuals by country of residence(i.e., mexico vs the US) and place of birth(i.e., US-born vs mexico-born).regression analyses were used to investigate cLD risk *** After adjusting for socio-demographic characteristics,mexican-Am.rican males were m.re likely to be obese,diabetic, heavy/binge drinkers or have abdominal obesity than males in mexico. Background Wilms tum.r (WT) is the most common childhood kidney cancer worldwide, yet its incidence and clinical behavior vary according to race and access to adequate healthcare resources. To guide and streamline therapy in the war-torn and resource-constrained city of Baghdad, Iraq, we conducted a first-ever molecular analysis of 20 WT specimens to characterize the biological features of this lethal disease within this challenged population. methods Next-generation sequencing of ten target genes associated with WT development and treatment resistance (WT1, cTNNB1, WTX, IGF2, cITED1, SIX2, p53, N-mYc, crABP2, and TOP2A) was completed. Immunohistochemistry was performed for 6 m.rker proteins of WT (WT1, cTNNB1, NcAm, cITED1, SIX2, and p53). Patient outcomes were compiled. results mutations were detected in previously described WT 'hot spots' (e.g., WT1 and cTNNB1) as well as novel loci that may be unique to the Iraqi population. Immunohistochemistry showed expression domains most typical of blastemal-predominant WT. rem.rkably, despite the challenges facing families and care providers, only one child, with combined WT1 and cTNNB1 mutations, was confirmed dead from disease. median clinical follow-up was 40.5 months (range 6–78 months). conclusions These data suggest that WT biology within a population of Iraqi children manifests features both similar to and unique from disease variants in other regions of the world. These observations will help to risk stratify WT patients living in this difficult environment to m.re or less intensive therapies and to focus treatment on cell-specific targets.

Fermented chile pepper mash is a major food product in New mexico. There are few reports on the fermentation process or on methods to monitor it, In the current study we examined a pour plate procedure with an overlay using plate count agar and 3 mTm PetrifilmTm Aerobic count （Ac） plates for determination of total aerobic bacterial counts during the fermentation of chile mash. Fifty chile mash samples were obtained directly from comm.rcial fermentation vats and examined within 2 h of collection. Serial dilutions of the chile mash were prepared in Butterfield＇s Phosphate Buffer. 1 mL portions of the diluted samples were aliquoted in duplicate onto the Ac plates and into empty Petri dishes. Plate count agar was poured and once the plates had solidified, they were overlaid with about 10 mL of PcA to minimize spreaders. Plates were incubated at 30 ℃ for 48 h and enum.rated. Paired difference tests were conducted on log transformed data to compare the results of the two plating procedures. For comm.rcial chile mash samples, we did not show any significant differences between the Ac plate counts and the pour plate counts （α = 0.05）, 3 mTm PetrifilmTm Ac plates are a good alternative to pour plates for the determination of the total aerobic counts in fermented chile mashes.
