The joint European Space Agency and Chinese Academy of Sciences Solar wind magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer(SmILE)mission will explore global dynamics of the magnetosphere under varying solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field conditions,and simultaneously monitor the auroral response of the Northern Hemisphere *** these large-scale responses with medium and fine-scale measurements at a variety of cadences by additional ground-based and space-based instruments will enable a much greater scientific impact beyond the original goals of the SmILE ***,we describe current community efforts to prepare for SmILE,and the benefits and context various experiments that have explicitly expressed support for SmILE can offer.A dedicated group of international scientists representing many different experiment types and geographical locations,the Ground-based and Additional Science Working Group,is facilitating these *** include constructing an online SmILE Data Fusion Facility,the discussion of particular or special modes for experiments such as coherent and incoherent scatter radar,and the consideration of particular observing strategies and spacecraft *** anticipate growing interest and community engagement with the SmILE mission,and we welcome novel ideas and insights from the solar-terrestrial community.

Adult celiac disease with acetylcholine receptor antibody positive myasthenia gravis

Celiac disease has been associated with some autoimmune disorders. A 40-year-old competitive strongman with celiac disease responded to a gluten-free diet, but developed profound and generalized motor weakness with acetylcholine receptor antibody positive myasthenia gravis, a disorder reported to occur in about 1 in 5000. This possible relationship between myasthenia gravis and celiac disease was further explored in serological studies. Frozen stored serum samples from 23 acetylcholine receptor antibody positive myasthenia gravis patients with no intestinal symptoms were used to screen for celiac disease. Both endomysial and tissue transglutaminase antibodies were examined. One of 23 (or, about 4.3%) was positive for both IgA-endomysial and IgA tissue transglutaminase antibodies. Endoscopic studies subsequently showed duodenal mucosal scalloping and biopsies confirmed the histopathological changes of celiac disease. Celiac disease and myasthenia gravis may occur together more often than is currently appreciated. The presence of motor weakness in celiac disease may be a clue to occult myasthenia gravis, even in the absence of intestinal symptoms.

Using remotely sensed and climate data to predict the current and potential future geographic distribution of a bird at multiple scales: the case of Agelastes meleagrides, a western African forest endemic

Background:Understanding geographic distributions of species is a crucial step in spatial planning for biodiversity conservation, particularly as regards changes in response to global climate *** information is especially important for species of global conservation concern that are susceptible to the effects of habitat loss and climate change. In this study, we used ecological niche modeling to assess the current and future geographic distributional potential of *** Guineafowl (Agelastes meleagrides)(Vulnerable) across West Africa. methods:We used primary occurrence data obtained from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility and national parks in Liberia and Sierra Leone, and two independent environmental datasets (moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer normalized difference vegetation index at 250 m spatial resolution, and Worldclim climate data at 2.5' spatial resolution for two representative concentration pathway emissions scenarios and 27 general circulation models for 2050) to build ecological niche models in maxent. Results: From the projections, *** Guineafowl showed a broader potential distribution across the region compared to the current IUCN range estimate for the species. Suitable areas were concentrated in the Gola rainforests in northwestern Liberia and southeastern Sierra Leone, the *** corridor in southeastern Liberia and southwestern Cote d'lvoire, and the Nimba mountains in northern Liberia, southeastern Guinea, and northwestern Cote d'*** *** projections anticipated minimal range shifts in response to climate change. Conclusions: By combining remotely sensed data and climatic data, our results suggest that forest cover, rather than climate is the major driver of the species' current distribution. Thus, conservation efforts should prioritize forest protection and mitigation of other anthropogenic threats (*** pressure) affecting the species.

Thermal and photochemical Effects on the Fluorescence properties of Type I Calf Skin Collagen Solutions at physiological pH

mammalian collagens exhibit weak intrinsic UV fluorescence that depends on the age and previous history of the sample. post-translational modifications result in additional fluorescent products (e.g. DOpA, dityrosine, and advanced glycation end products (AGE)). UV radiation can cause longer wavelength fluorescent oxidative bands. These alterations can assess the extent of photolysis. We describe the ground- and excited-state oxidative transformations of newly-purchased type I calf skin collagens (samples #092014 and #072012) and a 7-year-old sample (#072005). We compare the effects of UV radiation (mainly 254 nm) and age on the photochemical reaction kinetics and fluorescence spectral distribution of type I calf skin collagen at pH 7.4. The fluorescence spectra of samples #072012 and #092014 were similar but not identical to pure tyrosine, whereas #072005 indicated significant “dark” oxidation at the expense of tyrosine. Fading of oxidized product(s) at 270/360 nm is second-order. Build-up of 325/400 nm (dityrosine) fluorescence is linear with time. Rate parameters r2 and r1 were respectively proportional to second order disappearance of ground state oxidation products and the quasi–first-order photochemical formation of dityrosine. There is a reciprocal relationship between the rates of decrease in the 270/360 nm fluorescence and concomitant increase in 325/400 nm fluorescence. Their relative rates depend on the age of the collagen sample. There is a reciprocal relationship between r1 and r2. This relationship results because both ground state autoxidation and excited state photo-dimerization proceed via a common tyrosyl radical intermediate. Water of hydration appears to play a role in generating tyrosyl radical.

Background: Using ultrasound to measure optic nerve sheath diameter(ONSD) is an emerging bedside technique to noninvasively assess intracranial pressure(ICp) in patients with brain injury. This technique is unique among bedside ultrasonography and is often performed by providers who have no formal ultrasound training. We sought to create a low-cost, 3 D, reusable ONSD model to train neurology, neurosurgery, and critical care providers in measuring ***: We identified 253 articles, of which 15 were associated with models and 2 with simulation. One gelatin model was reported, upon which we based our initial design. We could not validate the visual findings of this model;however, after constructing multiple beta models, the design most representative of human eye anatomy was a globe made of ballistics gel and either a 3 mm, 5 mm, or 7 mm×50 mm 3 D-printed optic nerve inserted into a platform composed of ballistics gel, all of which sat inside a 3 D-printed skull. This model was used to teach ONSD measurements with ultrasound at a continuing medical education event prior to training on a live human ***: A simple 3 D ballistic ONSD model allows learners to practice proper hand placement and pressure, basic landmarks, and ONSD measurement prior to operating on a human eye. This model is replicable and sustainable given that the globe and platform are composed of ballistics gel.

The Interaction(s) between Calf-Skin Hyaluronic Acid (Hyaluronan) and Dermal Type I Calf-Skin Collagen under 254 nm UV Radiation: Ability of Hyaluronan to Alter Qualitative and Quantitative Dimerization of Collagen Tyrosine Residues

The extracellular matrix (ECm) is the non-cellular component present within all tissues and organs, providing not only essential physical scaffolding for the cellular constituents and initiating crucial biochemical and biomechanical cues, required for tissue morphogenesis, differentiation and homeostasis. Roughly divided into two groups, these are 1) the main fibrous ECm proteins: collagens, elastins, fibronectins and laminins. 2) Classification of proteoglycans (pGs) is based on their location and binding. Although many different molecular interactions are possible, they depend on the cells’ condition (i.e. “Normal”, Aged, Wounded/Fibrotic, and cancerous). There is little or no data that addresses the influence of the surrounding ECm on dityrosine formation. As a simpler model, we have replaced total pG with hyaluronan (HA) and have used purified calf-skin collagen tyrosine, which forms dityrosine (A2) under 254 nm UV in buffered solution and (near) physiological temperatures. Our results reveal a complicated temperature dependence involving factors relating to collagen HA structure, and collagen’s photochemical activation parameters.

English and Black Walnut phenolic Antioxidant Activity <i>in Vitro</i>and Following Human Nut Consumption

Background: Walnut consumption may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by providing antioxidant protection to low density lipoproteins (LDL). Aim: This study compared the phenolic profile and antioxidant activity of English ver- sus black walnuts. methods: Nuts were extracted in methanol or acetone prior to analysis with HpLC/LC-mS-mS for phenolic identification and quantitation. The ability to prevent oxidation of LDL was examined in vitro using walnut extracts and ex vivo after walnut consumption for 28 days. Results: Flavonoids identified/quantified with HpLC/LC- mS-mS included the phenolic acids 5-caffeoylquinic acid, 3-caffeoylquinic acid (black walnut only), 4-caffeoylquinic acid, and the flavonol glycosides quercetin-3-rutinoside, quercetin-3-galactoside, quercetin-3-pentoside, quercetin-3- arabinoside, quercetin-3-rhamnoside, and the aglycone quercetin (English walnut only). Total phenolic yield of acetone extracts were 166.1 and 24.2 μg/g for English and black walnut respectively, and yield for methanol extracts were 147.6 and 4.1 μg/g for English and black walnut respectively. In vitro LDL oxidation by Cu++ with English walnut ex- tracts significantly extended oxidation lag-time (A234) in a dose dependent manner at 1.0 and 0.1 μg/ml and reduced TBARS formation (1.0 μg/ml). Black walnut extracts reduced TBARS significantly but had no effect on A234. Human consumption of English or black walnuts (30 g nuts/day) for 28 days resulted in no differences in LDL antioxidant ca- pacity (A234) between groups or within groups. Conclusion: This study suggests that the English walnuts have a pheno- lic profile and in vitro antioxidant capacity that is better than black walnuts, but that walnut consumption for 28 days does not improve LDL resistance to oxidation.

Indications for closed vitrectomy have increased remarkably during the past 10 years to include numerous anterior and posterior segment conditions not amenable in the past to other forms of intraocular surgery. Instrumentation and technic for both closed and open-sky vitrectomies have undergone numerous improvements, making the procedures relatively safe and results quite encouraging.

Chronic infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) is estimated to affect approximately 3% of the world's population and cause 350,000 deaths each *** number of years,the standard of care has been combination therapy with recombinant alfa interferons—originally as native proteins but more recently as polyethyleneglycol-modified derivatives—and ribavirin,with the recent addition of an NS3 protease inhibitor for HCV genotype ***,therapeutic alfa interferons are associated with a significant burden of treatment-limiting adverse events,including musculoskeletal and influenza-like symptoms,hematologic cytopenias,autoimmune disease,fatigue,and other neurologic *** 2003,a team at ZymoGenetics (now a fully owned subsidiary of Bristol-myers Squibb) and a second,independent group simultaneously identified a new class of interferons—the type Ⅲ lambda interferons—with near-identical activity to the type Ⅰ alfa interferons in hepatocytes but with an unrelated and less ubiquitous *** evaluation of the type Ⅲ interferon system demonstrated antiviral activity against HCV in vitro with limited activity in peripheral blood mononuclear cells and other nonhepatocyte cell types,supporting its development as a potentially better-tolerated therapy for viral *** lambda-1a (Lambda) is an investigational type Ⅲ therapeutic agent originally developed at ZymoGenetics that is currently in phase 3 studies for the treatment of *** this review,we describe the selection of the Lambda molecule and its preclinical and early clinical development,and how the resulting data have helped to establish the differentiated safety profile for Lambda—with fewer influenza-like and musculoskeletal symptoms and less hematologic toxicity than the alfa interferons—that was seen in later studies.
