Three-dimensional numerical analysis of plant-soil hydraulic interactions on pore water pressure of vegetated slope under different rainfall patterns

Understanding the pore water pressure distribution in unsaturated soil is crucial in predicting shallow landslides triggered by rainfall,mainly when dealing with different temporal patterns of rainfall ***,the hydrological response of vegetated slopes,especially three-dimensional(3D)slopes covered with shrubs,under different rainfall patterns remains unclear and requires further *** address this issue,this study adopts a novel 3D numerical model for simulating hydraulic interactions between the root system of the shrub and the surrounding *** series of numerical parametric studies are conducted to investigate the influences of slope inclination,rainfall pattern and rainfall *** rainfall patterns(advanced,bimodal,delayed,and uniform)and two rainfall durations(4-h intense and 168-h mild rainfall)are considered to study the hydrological response of the *** computed results show that 17%higher transpiration-induced suction is found for a steeper slope,which remains even after a short,intense rainfall with a 100-year return *** extreme rainfalls with advanced(PA),bimodal(PB)and uniform(PU)rainfall patterns need to be considered for the short rainfall duration(4 h),while the delayed(PD)and uniform(PU)rainfall patterns are highly recommended for long rainfall durations(168 h).The presence of plants can improve slope stability markedly under extreme rainfall with a short duration(4 h).For the long duration(168 h),the benefit of the plant in preserving pore-water pressure(PWP)and slope stability may not be sufficient.

A unified stochastic damage model for concrete based on multi-scale energy dissipation analysis

This work proposes a unified damage model for concrete within the framework of stochastic damage mechanics. Based on the micro-meso stochastic fracture model(mmSF), the nonlinear energy dissipation process of the microspring from nanoscale to microscale is investigated. In nanoscale, the rate process theory is adopted to describe the crack growth rate;therefore, the corresponding energy dissipation caused by a representative crack propagation can be obtained. The scale gap from nanoscale to microscale is bridged by a crack hierarchy model. Thus, the total energy dissipated by all cracks from the nanoscale to the microscale is gained. It is found that the fracture strain of the microspring can be derived from the above multi-scale energy dissipation analysis. When energy dissipation is regarded as some microdamage to the microspring, the constitutive law of the microspring is no longer linearly elastic, as previously assumed. By changing the expression of the damage evolution law from fracture strain to energy dissipation threshold, the new damage evolution model is derived. The proposed model can not only replicate the original static model but also extend to cases of rate dependence. By deriving the fracture strain under different strain rates, the rate sensitivity of concrete materials can be reflected. The model parameters can be conveniently obtained by identifying them with experimental data. Finally, several numerical examples are presented to verify the proposed model.

Predicting torsional capacity of reinforced concrete members by data-driven machine learning models

Due to the complicated three-dimensional behaviors and testing limitations of reinforced concrete(RC)members in torsion,torsional mechanism exploration and torsional performance prediction have always been *** the present paper,several machine learning models were applied to predict the torsional capacity of RC *** results of a total of 287 torsional specimens were collected through an overall literature *** of extreme gradient boosting machine(XGBm),random forest regression,back propagation artificial neural network and support vector machine,were trained and tested by 10-fold cross-validation *** performances of proposed machine learning models were evaluated and compared,both with each other and with the calculated results of existing design codes,i.e.,GB 50010,ACI 318-19,and Eurocode *** results demonstrated that better predictive performance was achieved by machine learning models,whereas GB 50010 slightly overestimated the torsional capacity,and ACI 318-19 and Eurocode 2 underestimated it,especially in the case of ACI *** XGBm model gave the most favorable predictions with R^(2)=0.999,RmSE=1.386,mAE=0.86,andλ=***,strength of concrete was the most sensitive input parameters affecting the reliability of the predictive model,followed by transverse-to-longitudinal reinforcement ratio and total reinforcement ratio.

Stable graphene oxide-based lyotropic liquid crystals for interfacial lubrication

Lyotropic liquid crystals have lubricating properties due to their ordered assembly and fluidity,whose mesogens are often characterized by amphiphilic *** the attention that graphene oxide(GO)has been studied as a novel amphiphilic lyotropic mesogen this decade,and GO applied as a lubrication additive has been demonstrated in both oil and water-based systems,little research reveals the interfacial lubrication of GO liquid crystals *** work reports that GO aqueous dispersion can form lyotropic liquid crystals above a specific critical concentration of 5.00 mg/mL,providing a form of stable water-based lubricant,which can keep stable for several months and can reduce friction by 37.3%and wear by 25.24%.The liquid crystal phase was verified by polarizing microscope and synchrotron radiation small-angle X-ray scattering,and its rheological properties and viscoelasticity were studied by interfacial *** formation of lyotropic liquid crystals can enhance the stability of GO aqueous dispersions at high density,simultaneously ensuring friction decrease and anti-wear *** is attributed to the stable nematic network by the ordered GO *** ordered assembly structure bears vertical shear force,therefore,reducing the *** is also assumed that the wide lateral size of graphene oxide promotes the nematic phase thus smoothes the graphene oxide film composed spontaneously under the coincidence of lamellar liquid crystal and 2D layered *** this work,the interlayer lubrication of GO was optimized,and the problem of GO dispersion sedimentation was solved by *** range of interfacial lubrication of GO aqueous dispersion has been expanded and the synergistic effect is conducive to the environmentally friendly lubricants.

modelling the water diversion of a sustainable cover system under humid climates

Extreme rainfall significantly threatens the safety of the landfill cover system,especially under humid *** study aims to provide design recommendations for a sustainable landfill cover system consisting of a low-permeability soil layer underlying a two-layer capillary barrier for humid ***,the numerical back-analysis was conducted for verification against a series of flume model ***,a parametric study was performed to investigate the effects of inclination angle,particle size and layer thickness on the lateral diversion length(DL)of the three-layer cover system under the 100-year return period rainfall of humid *** results show that the water lateral DL of the cover system can be greatly enhanced by increasing the inclination angle from 3°to 18°.moreover,the bottom layer of the cover system with a coarser d10 was more susceptible to the impact of the heavy rainfall,while this can be alleviated by increasing the thickness of the bottom layer.A dimensionless number,defined as the ratio of thickness and d_(10) of the bottom layer,is proposed for designing lateral diversion of the three-layer cover system under humid *** preserve the maximum DL,it is suggested that the proposed dimensionless number should be larger than 95 and 110 for the design of rainfall events with 50-year and 100-year return periods for humid climates,respectively.

Three-year field study on grass growth and soil hydrological properties in biochar-amended soil

Field monitoring was conducted to investigate and quantify the long-term effects of peanut shell biochar on soil-grass interaction over three *** 10 m5 m grassed plots were constructed in completely decomposed granitic *** of them were amended,respectively,with 5%and 10%biochar contents(m^(3)/m^(3))for grass growth,while the third was without biochar *** the threeyear monitoring,plant characteristics,saturated water permeability(k_(s))of grassed soil and soil suction were *** monitored results show that the grass leaf area index(LAI)and root length density(RLD)with biochar amendment were improved by 38%and 200%,*** the grassed plot without biochar,a threshold RLD existed with a value of 1.7 cm/cm^(3),beyond which k_(s) raised *** threshold RLD increased by 52%when biochar content increased from 0%to 10%.This implies that biochar may restrict the increase in k_(s) of grassed soil due to the rise in the threshold *** presence of biochar and grass can retain over 100%higher suction after heavy rainfalls,while 54%lower peak suction under evapotranspiration(ET)compared with the non-amended *** can alleviate the negative effects on hydraulic properties caused by plant growth and reduce ET-induced excessive water loss.A 5%peanut shell biochar content is recommended for the long-term management of vegetated earthen infrastructures.

multi-Objective multi-Variable Large-Size Fan Aerodynamic Optimization by Using multi-model Ensemble Optimization Algorithm

The constrained multi-objective multi-variable optimization of fans usually needs a great deal of computational fluid dynamics(CFD)calculations and is *** this study,a new multi-model ensemble optimization algorithm is proposed to tackle such an expensive optimization *** multi-variable and multi-objective optimization are conducted with a new flexible multi-objective infill *** addition,the search direction is determined by the multi-model ensemble assisted evolutionary algorithm and the feature extraction by the principal component analysis is used to reduce the dimension of optimization ***,the proposed algorithm and other two optimization algorithms which prevail in fan optimizations were compared by using test *** the same number of objective function evaluations,the proposed algorithm shows a fast convergency rate on finding the optimal objective function ***,this algorithm was used to optimize the rotor and stator blades of a large axial fan,with the efficiencies as the objectives at three flow rates,the high,the design and the low flow ***-two variables were included in the optimization *** results show that compared with the prototype fan,the total pressure efficiencies of the optimized fan at the high,the design and the low flow rate were increased by 3.35%,3.07%and 2.89%,respectively,after CFD simulations for 500 fan candidates with the constraint for the design *** optimization results validate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed algorithm.

Polyploidy is a major factor in the evolution of plants,yet we know little about the origin and evolution of polyploidy in intertidal *** study aimed to identify the evolutionary transitions in three truem.ngrove species of the genus Acanthus distributed in the Indo-West Pacific *** this purpose,we took an integrative approach that combined data on morphology,cytology,climatic niche,phylogeny,and biogeography of 493 samples from 42 geographic *** results show that the Acanthus ilicifolius lineage distributed east of the Thai-malay Peninsula possesses a tetraploid karyotype,which is morphologically distinct from that of the lineage on the west *** haplotype networks and phylogenetic trees for the chloroplast genome and eight nuclear genes reveal that the tetraploid species has two sub-genomes,one each from *** and ***,the paternal and maternal parents,*** structure analysis also supports the hybrid speciation history of the new tetraploid *** two sub-genomes of the tetraploid species diverged from their diploid progenitors during the *** niche models revealed that the tetraploid species not only occupied the near-entire niche space of the diploids,but also expanded into novel *** findings suggest that *** species distributed on the east side of the Thai-malay Peninsula should be regarded as a new species,***,which originated from hybridization between *** and ***,followed by chromosome *** is the first report of a true-m.ngrove allopolyploid species that can reproduce sexually and clonally reproduction,which explains the long-term adaptive potential of the species.

GmAT:A Graph modeling method for Group Preference Prediction

Preference prediction is the building block of personalized services,and its implementation at the group level helps enterprises identify their target customers *** methods for preference prediction mainly focus on behavioral interactions to extract the associations between groups and products,ignoring the importance of other auxiliary records(e.g.,online reviews and social tags)in association *** paper proposes a novel method named GmAT for group preference prediction,aim.ng to collectively detect the sophisticated association patterns from user generated content(UGC)and behavioral *** doing so,we construct a tripartite graph to collaborate these two types of data,and design a deep-learning algorithm with mutual attention module for generating the contextualized representations of groups and *** experiments on two real-world datasets show that GmAT is superior to other baselines in terms of group preference ***,GmAT is able to improve prediction accuracy compared with its different variants,further verifying the proposed method’s effectiveness on association pattern detection.
