Tigris River Water Quality Quantifying Using the Iraq Water Quality Index (IraqWQI) and Some Statistical Techniques

Evaluation of water quality is important for the m.nagement of water resources. The current study is focused on the interpretation of the water quality monitoring data of the Tigris River in Iraq by the application of the principal component analysis (PCA), cluster analysis (CA), and water quality index (WQI). Twelve water quality parameters were tak.n from 14 stations along the river Ca2+, mg2+, na+, k., Cl−, SO42−, HCO3−, NO3−, TH, TDS, BOD5, and EC to apply the PCA and CA. The results show that the mean of all the parameters was under the standards except Ca2+, EC, mg2+, TH, and SO42−. The amount of EC is the critical factor that affects the river water quality. The PCA obtained one principal component responsible for 97% of the variation caused by different pollution sources. The CA divided the river into three regions of sampling stations with similar water quality, the best in the north, and the worst in the far south. In this paper, the computer-automated tool (IraqWQI) was presented and evaluated, which has been developed by authors to classify and measure the quality of Iraqi surface water. The proposed index is of hundred degrees and includes six variables for drink.ng water quality Cl−, TH, TDS, COD, DO, and total coliform (TC) according to the Iraqi specifications. The result of the IraqWQI application showed a decrease in the water quality of the river and its suitability for drink.ng in the south of the country. The best value of the index was (81.48, Good) in Fishk.abour during winter, and the worst value was (46.23, Bad) in Qurnah during summer. The result of this study proved the success and importance of using statistical techniques and WQI as useful tools for the m.nagement, control, and conservation of surface water. .

Synthesis and Structure-Activity Relationships of Novel Neocryptolepine Derivatives

Herein we reported the synthesis of a novel series of neocryptolepine（5-methyl-5H-indolo[2,3-b]quinoline） derivatives containing different substituents at Cll using methyl 1H-indole-3-carboxylate and N-methylaniline as starting material. The target 21 compounds were evaluated for their axltibacterial activity in vitro against gram-positive bacteria（B, subtilis and S. aureus） and gram-negative bacteria（E, coli and ***）. Almost all the tested compounds showed moderate to high activities against the four bacterial strains at the minimum inhibitory concentrations（mICs） of 1-10μg/mL. The obtained results suggest that part of the novel synthetic neocryptolepine derivatives exhibit significant antibacterial effect against all the tested organisms.

Compressive Sensing Algorithms for Signal Processing Applications: A Survey

In digital signal processing (DSP), Nyquistrate sampling completely describes a signal by exploiting its bandlimitedness. Compressed Sensing (CS), also k.own as compressive sampling, is a DSP technique efficiently acquiring and reconstructing a signal completely from reduced number of measurements, by exploiting its compressibility. The measurements are not point samples but more general linear functions of the signal. CS can capture and represent sparse signals at a rate significantly lower than ordinarily used in the Shannon’s sampling theorem. It is interesting to notice that most signals in reality are sparse;especially when they are represented in some domain (such as the wavelet domain) where many coefficients are close to or equal to zero. A signal is called k.sparse, if it can be exactly represented by a basis, , and a set of coefficients , where only k.coefficients are nonzero. A signal is called approximately k.sparse, if it can be represented up to a certain accuracy using k.non-zero coefficients. As an example, a k.sparse signal is the class of signals that are the sum of k.sinusoids chosen from the N harmonics of the observed time interval. Tak.ng the DFT of any such signal would render only k.non-zero values . An example of approximately sparse signals is when the coefficients , sorted by magnitude, decrease following a power law. In this case the sparse approximation constructed by choosing the k.largest coefficients is guaranteed to have an approximation error that decreases with the same power law as the coefficients. The main limitation of CS-based systems is that they are employing iterative algorithms to recover the signal. The sealgorithms are slow and the hardware solution has become crucial for higher performance and speed. This technique enables fewer data samples than traditionally required when capturing a signal with relatively high bandwidth, but a low information rate. Compression of ECG Signal Based on Compressive Sensing and the Extraction of Significant Features

Diagnoses of heart diseases can be done effectively on long term recordings of ECG signals that preserve the signals’ morphologies. In these cases, the volume of the ECG data produced by the monitoring systems grows significantly. To mak. the mobile healthcare possible, the need for efficient ECG signal compression algorithms to store and/or transmit the signal efficiently has been rising exponentially. Currently, ECG signal is acquired at Nyquist rate or higher, thus introducing redundancies between adjacent heartbeats due to its quasi-periodic structure. Existing compression methods remove these redundancies by achieving compression and facilitate transmission of the patient’s imperative information. Based on the fact that these signals can be approximated by a linear combination of a few coefficients tak.n from different basis, an alternative new compression scheme based on Compressive Sensing (CS) has been proposed. CS provides a new approach concerned with signal compression and recovery by exploiting the fact that ECG signal can be reconstructed by acquiring a relatively small number of samples in the “sparse” domains through well-developed optimization procedures. In this paper, a single-lead ECG compression method has been proposed based on improving the signal sparisty through the extraction of the signal significant features. The proposed method starts with a preprocessing stage that detects the peak. and periods of the Q, R and S waves of each beat. Then, the QRS-complex for each signal beat is estimated. The estimated QRS-complexes are subtracted from the original ECG signal and the resulting error signal is compressed using the CS technique. Throughout this process, DWT sparsifying dictionaries have been adopted. The performance of the proposed algorithm, in terms of the reconstructed signal quality and compression ratio, is evaluated by adopting DWT spatial domain basis applied to ECG records extracted from the mIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database. Potentiality of Secondary Aquifers in Saudi Arabia: Evaluation of Groundwater Quality in Jubaila Limestone

Groundwater scarcity in arid regions may hinder development plans and cause many inconveniences for the population and authorities. Saudi Arabia has limited groundwater resources stored in the sedimentary sequence of the Arabian Shelf. Some of these resources were classified as major aquifers, secondary and minor aquifers, and some were considered as aquicludes. The Jubaila Limestone is one of the secondary aquifers of Saudi Arabia. The main purpose of this paper is to evaluate the groundwater resources of the Jubaila Limestone in Riyadh area, with emphasis on groundwater quality. Groundwater was found to occur in fractures and within solution openings of the Jubaila Limestone at depths which range between 19 and 210 m. The transmissivity value was 1.7 × 10–3 to 7.2 × 10–3 m2/s;the storage coefficient was of 1.3 × 10–4. The electrical conductivity for collected water samples ranged between 831 and 7670 μS/cm. The major ionic relationships were na > Ca > mg and SO4Cl > HCO3. The groundwater evolves from.naCl dom.nated at the southern end of the study area, into Ca, mgSO4 water in the north. The main chemical process responsible of this variation was found to be dissolution of anhydrite and gypsum. The groundwater was not found suitable for drink.ng purposes but can be used by livestock.and for some agricultural purposes.

The influence of chromium ions on the growth of the calcium hydroxyapatite crystal

Hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) is widely used as bio-ceramic materials and as adsorbents for separation of bio-molecules. These materials have also been used as adsorbents for heavy metals, supports and as catalysts in oxidation and dehydrogenation reactions. The catalytic performance of these materials depend on the lattice substitution of Ca sites in Hydroxyapatite structure by varied cations as na, mg, Sr and mn, which result in changes in various structural pro perties as crystallinity and morphology. Pure calcium hydroxyapatite (S1) and Cr loaded hydroxyl apatite (S2, S3, S4 and S5) of different chromium concentrations have been prepared by wet precipitated method. An in-vitro exam.nation is essential to investigate the mechanism of the deficient HA and tissue interface reaction by preparing SBF (Simulated Body Fluid) through the elemental and chemical analysis of Ca, P and Cr. FTIR used to analyze the samples after incubation in SBF for 24 day. PH of the samples also was measured at the first period of immersion time. At high loading of chromium ions, the formation of carbonate apatite decrease. The concentrations of the chromium in the Cr_HA crystal during the soak.ng in SBF are very safe dose for human.

In the late 1980’s the deve lop ment of a severe epidemic of green mold caused by Trichoderma spp. was not ed in the commercial production of Agaricus bisporus (champignon) in the U nited k.ngdom, North America, Spain and Holland, which caused extensive economic losses. The parasitic fungi isolated from the edible mushroom belonged to four biotypes, Th1, Th2, Th3 and Th4 of T. harzianum. However, among these biotypes, only Th2 (since c lassified as T. aggressivum f. europaeum) and Th4 (T. aggressivum f. aggressivum) were identified as the fungi causing problems in Agaricus production. In general, mushroom compost hosts both aggressive and innocuous is olates of Trichoderma, which are not morphologically distinguishable. abo ut four years ago, a problem with green mold became apparent in the production o f Pleurotus ostreatus in Northern Italy, which eventually developed to a c risis situation in the South two years later and threatened to seriously comprom ise the Pleurotus mark.t. This study was initiated to: isolate and identif y the aggressive fungi, then morphologically, physiologically and genetically characterize the isolates, dete rmine the source and phases of infection, and study methods of control. Samples were obtained from different phases of compost preparation at the locality of a major producer and supplier of compost to the mushroom industry in Southern Ital y, and microbial counts were conducted. Although the presence of Trichoderma was detected in the initial stages of composting, this value was reduced to zero from the phase of pasteurization to seeding with Pleurotus. Trichoderma infestations were noted in the pack.ged Pleurotus bales at various time s during the incubation phase (7-15 days after seeding) and after shipping to th e mushroom greenhouses, where the pathogen infestations greatly reduced the qual ity and quantity of the mushroom yield, as well as the number of potential harvest cycles.
