Genetic and morphological variation in natural teak(Tectona grandis) populations of the Western Ghats in Southern India

Teak （Tectona grandis L.f.） is a popular hardwood species native to South and South-East Asia. The possible association of ampli- fied fragment length polymorphism （AFLP） marker with morphological variables of eleven important characters viz. girth at breast height （GBH）, height of tree, bole height, branch knots, presence of fluting, spiral stem, leaf hair, leaf length/breadth ratio, branching pattern, bark colour and petiole shape for nine natural populations comprising 180 genotypes of teak （9 populations x 20 trees）. The phenogram constructed using Euclidean distances for the eleven morphological characters showed that the populations were not grouped according to their geographical origin. The mantel＇s test for pairwise correlation between Euclidean distances of different morphological variables and genetic distances from AFLP data revealed that only petiole character （r =0.269; p =0.046） and height of tree （r =0,200; p =0.001） were significantly correlated with that of AFLP data matrix. The nine populations in this study covered a geographic area of about 1000 km stretch along the Western Ghat of South India. A test of correlation between genetic and geographic distance matrices revealed a significant positive correlation （r =0.475; p =0.009）. The lack of perfect congruence between morphological and molecular data except for geo-graphic distance, tree height and petiole character suggested that the morphological system might be useful for the morphotypes management but not appropriate to study the genetic structure of the teak populations.

Biological methane oxidation is a crucial process in the global carbon cycle that reduces methane emissions from paddy fields and natural wetlands into the ***,soil organic carbon accumulation associated with microbial methane oxidation is poorly ***,to investigate methane-derived carbon incorporation into soil organic matter,paddy soils originated from different parent materials(Inceptisol,Entisol,and Alfisol) were collected after rice harvesting from four major rice-producing regions in *** microcosm incubation with 5%(volume/volume)^(13) CH_(4),soil^(13) C-atom abundances significantly increased from background level of 1.08% to 1.88%–2.78%,leading to a net methane-derived accumulation of soil organic carbon ranging from 120 to 307 mg kg^(-1).Approximately 23.6%–60.0% of the methane consumed was converted to soil organic carbon during microbial methane *** phylogeny of^(13) C-labeled pmoA(enconding the alpha subunit of the particulate methane monooxygenase) and 16 S rRNA genes further revealed that canonical α(type II) and γ(type I) Proteobacteria were active methane *** within the methylobacter-and methylosarcina-affiliated type Ia lineages dominated active methane-oxidizing communities that were responsible for the majority of methane-derived carbon accumulation in all three paddy soils,while methylocystis-affiliated type IIa lineage was the key contributor in one paddy soil of Inceptisol *** results suggest that methanotroph-mediated synthesis of biomass plays an important role in soil organic matter *** study thus supports the concept that methanotrophs not only consume the greenhouse gas methane but also serve as a key biotic factor in maintaining soil fertility.

An experiment was conducted at the mycology laboratory, Department of Plant Pathology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh to find out the efficacy of selected botanical extracts against Botrytis gladiolorum (Bg) causing gladiolus leaf blight. Infected leaves samples were collected from gladiolus farmers’ field and brought to the laboratory for study. Ten selected botanicals were used against the colony growth of (Bg). The botanicals were mehendi, Chrysanthemum, Basil (Tulsi), Onion, Neem, Bael, Arjuna, Garlic, Aloevera (Ghritkumary) and Turmeric. Botanical extracts were applied at the rate of 5%, 10% and 20%. The radial mycelia growth was found minimum (11.60 mm) in garlic extract treated plate at the dose of 5% at 5 DAI, which was statistically similar with turmeric extract treated (14.00 mm) plate and the inhibition of growth was 60% and 51.72%, respectively. Similar trend was found at 10 DAI and 15 DAI. At 15 DAI, garlic and turmeric extract gave the best result against Bg, which was statistically similar with onion (50.07% inhibition) and mehendi (49.93%). All botanicals showed significantly different results over control and found effective in reducing the mycelial growth at the dose of 10%. At 5 DAI, no radial mycelia growth was found in garlic treated plate, which was statistically similar with onion treated plate, means that the inhibition of growth was 100%. Similar trend was also found at 10 DAI, and 15 DAI but at 15 DAI, onion (30.20 mm) gave the statistically similar results with Garlic (30.10 mm) and the mycelia growth inhibition was (57.70%) and (57.84%), respectively. In case of 20% dose, garlic extract showed the best result at 5 DAI and the radial mycelia growth was found minimum (00.00 mm) which was statistically similar with onion extract treated (00.00 mm) plate and turmeric extract treated plate. Effect of Gd addition on the superconducting properties of Ti-based V, Nb, Ta alloys

The critical current density(Jc)of the body centered cubic(bcc)V0.6Ti0.4 alloy enhances significantly after the addition of rare earth Gd as the latter is immiscible in the matrix[***,***,IEEE ***.31,5(2021)].Very low solubility of Gd in other bcc elements like Ta and Nb is also well known[*** Gschneidner in Prog Sci Technol Rare Earths,vol.1,pp.222–258,1964&m Neuberger,*** in Handbook of Electronic materials,Vol 4,1972].We use these facts to find the effect of adding 1 at.%Gd into the Nb0.6Ti0.4 and Ta0.4Ti0.6 alloys on the superconducting properties e.g.,the transition temperature(Tc),Jc,flux pinning force density(Fp)and the *** spite of Gd being ferromagnetic,the Tc in these alloys change only marginally(increase by 0.3 K in Ta0.4Ti0.6 and decrease by 0.15 K in Nb0.6Ti0.4 after Gd *** Jc(H?1 T,T=4 K)increases by 5 and 1.5 times respectively in the Gd containing Nb0.6Ti0.4 and Ta0.4Ti0.6 alloys,which is quite small as compared to the increase observed in the V0.6Ti0.4(20 times)*** Gd addition,the grain size reduces approximately by 65%and 10%respectively in Nb0.6Ti0.4 and *** analysis indicates that grain boundaries are the major flux line pinning centres in these alloys and the role of Gd in increasing the Jc depends on the effectiveness of Gd in reducing the grain *** grain boundary density depends strongly on the distribution of Gd precipitates,which is quite different from each other for two alloy systems under ***,our results suggest that the addition of Gd to commercial Nb‐Ti(Nb0.37Ti0.63)alloy is a new promising route for achieving higher Jc values.

Prevalence of Seed-Borne Fungi Associated with Seeds of Some Selected Flowers

The prevalence of fungi associated with seeds of some selected local flowers namely cosmos, marigold, calendula, and periwinkle collected from three different locations (Arboriculture Garden, Ramna Park Garden, and Horticulture Garden) in Dhaka district and four hybrid flower seeds (African marigold, cockscomb, petunia, and Portulaca) collected from momin Beej Ghar, Dhaka district were recorded. The results showed that the highest percent germination (91.38%) of cosmos was obtained from Horticulture garden’s seed, marigold (95.25%) obtained from Arboriculture garden’s seed, and calendula (65.88%) periwinkle (79.38%) obtained from Ramna park garden’s seeds. But in the case of hybrid seeds, African marigold showed the highest percent seed germination (98.25%). The Horticulture garden’s seed was better than the others considering the incidence of fungi in all local flower seeds tested. But periwinkle was the lowest affected seed (12.58%, 12.20%, 8.07% incidence) and marigold was the highest affected seed (40.31%, 35.33%, 31.33% incidence) collected from Arboriculture Garden, Ramna Park, and Horticulture Garden, respectively. But in hybrid flower seeds, the lowest fungal infection (3.14%) was recorded in Portulaca and petunia seeds whereas the highest (6.20%) was in African marigold seeds.

Using series iteration techniques identities and apply each of these identities in we derive a number of general double series order to deduce several hypergeometric reduction formulas involving the Srivastava-Daoust double hypergeometric function. In this study, three wheat varieties were tested to determine seed germination and the incidence of magnaporthe oryzae triticum (moT). Among these varieties, BARI Gom 24 (Prodip) wheat seed exhibited the highest seed germination rate (93%) but also had the highest incidence (30%) of moT. To manage blast disease in an ecofriendly manner, seven treatments were employed: T1 = Control, T2 = Garlic clove extracts, T3 = Aloe vera leaf extracts, T4 = Black cumin seed extracts, T5 = Neem leaf extracts, T6 = Nativo 75 WG, and T7 = Provax 200 WP. The experiment was conducted using a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) layout with three replications using Prodip wheat variety that exhibited highest moT infection severity based on laboratory analysis among collected varieties. Data were collected on blast disease incidence (%), disease severity, and various growth and yield parameters of wheat. The experiment’s results indicated that among all the treatments, T7 (Seed treatment with Provax 200 WP) and T5 (Foliar spraying with Neem leaf extract) performed better in controlling blast disease in wheat. The lowest blast disease incidence (%) was observed with T7 (Provax 200 WP), with values of 7.86, 9.86, and 10.19 recorded during the milking stage, soft dough stage, and hard dough stage of wheat, respectively. T5 (Neem leaf extract) also demonstrated a statistically equivalent reduction in blast disease incidence (%). In terms of disease severity, T7 (Seed treatment with Provax 200 WP) showed the lowest values of 1.03, 1.23, and 1.63 during the milking stage, soft dough stage, and hard dough stage of wheat, respectively. Foliar spraying with neem leaf extract also exhibited similar result as of Provax 200 WP regarding panicle blast severity.
