Background Advances in treatment for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DmD) and spinal muscular atrophy (SmA) hold promise for children with these *** genetic diagnosis,early in the disease process,will allow these treatments to be most *** screening (NBS) for SmA has been recommended in the United States,and a pilot DmD NBS program is underway in Hangzhou,*** sources A Pubmed search,limited to the past 5 years,was conducted to identify:(1) therapeutic advancements for DmD/SmA approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration or the European medicine Agency and (2) The status of NBS for DmD/*** We review the current state of approved treatments for DmD/*** present recommendations regarding the future of NBS for these diseases,with a focus on the outcomes and challenges of SmA NBS in New York,USA,and the DmD NBS pilot program in Hangzhou,*** Approved treatments for DmD and SmA may change the natural history of these ***-term studies of these treatments are *** avoid the known diagnostic delay associated with these disorders and provide optimal effectiveness of these treatments,early identification of patients through NBS will be *** comprehensive follow-up plans for positively identified patients will need to be in place for NBS programs to be successful.

Despite tremendous efforts to fight cancer,it remains a major public health problem and a leading cause of death *** increased knowledge of cancer pathways and improved technological platforms,precision therapeutics that specifically target aberrant cancer pathways have improved patient ***,a primary cause of unsuccessful cancer therapy remains cancer drug *** this review,we summarize the broad classes of resistance to cancer therapy,particularly pharmacokinetics,the tumor microenvironment,and drug resistance ***,we describe how bacterial-mediated cancer therapy,a bygone mode of treatment,has been revitalized by synthetic biology and is uniquely suited to address the primary resistance mechanisms that confound traditional *** genetic engineering,we discuss how bacteria can be potent anticancer agents given their tumor targeting potential,anti-tumor activity,safety,and coordinated delivery of anti-cancer drugs.

Constraint Optimal Selection Techniques (COSTs) for Linear Programming

We describe a new active-set, cutting-plane Constraint Optimal Selection Technique (COST) for solving general linear programming problems. We describe strategies to bound the initial problem and simultaneously add multiple constraints. We give an interpretation of the new COST’s selection rule, which considers both the depth of constraints as well as their angles from the objective function. We provide computational comparisons of the COST with existing linear programming algorithms, including other COSTs in the literature, for some large-scale problems. Finally, we discuss conclusions and future research.

Posterior constraint optimal selection techniques (COSTs) are developed for nonnegative linear programming problems (NNLPs), and a geometric interpretation is provided. The posterior approach is used in both a dynamic and non-dynamic active-set framework. The computational performance of these methods is compared with the CPLEX standard linear programming algorithms, with two most-violated constraint approaches, and with previously developed COST algorithms for large-scale problems.

Relationship Between metabolic Fitness and Performance in Police Occupational Tasks

Purpose To determine the relationship between metabolic fitness test scores and performance in police occupational *** Retrospective data from 106 law enforcement officers who completed two metabolic fitness assessments[anaerobic:a 20-m (10-m and 20-m splits) sprint,aerobic:20 m multi-Stage Fitness Test (20 m-mSFT)]and three routine occupational tasks[1.22 m Fence jump (FJ),8.5 m Victim Drag (VD with 102.3 kg) and "Get-up" (GU)]were collected.A Person's cor-relation coefficient and a standard multiple regression were used to assess the relationship between and predictive ability of,respectively,the fitness tests scores and performance on occupational *** There was a significant positive correlation between the 10-m sprint scores and FJ (r=0.524,Pmilarly,the 20-m sprint scores were significantly and moderately correlated with FJ (r=0.573,P mately 40% of the performance in the occupational tasks *** mSFT fitness assessment had a small,albeit significant negative correlation with the three tasks:FJ (r=-0.360,Pmetabolic fitness correlated with faster performance in police officer occupational tasks,particu-larly ones of an anaerobic nature (*** maximal sprint tests).In addition to typical aerobic fitness conditioning,anaerobic fitness conditioning could be vital for optimal performance in physically demanding tasks required of police officer.

Selection of sugar beet(Beta vulgaris L.)cultivars that are resistant to Cercospora Leaf Spot(CLS)disease is critical to increase *** selection requires an automatic,fast,and objective method to assess CLS severity on thousands of cultivars in the *** this purpose,we compare the use of submillimeter scale RGB imagery acquired from an Unmanned Ground Vehicle(UGV)under active illumination and centimeter scale multispectral imagery acquired from an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV)under passive *** variables are extracted from the images(spot density and spot size for UGV,green fraction for UGV and UAV)and related to visual scores assessed by an *** show that spot density and green fraction are critical variables to assess low and high CLS severities,respectively,which emphasizes the importance of having submillimeter images to early detect CLS in field *** sensitivity to CLS can then be accurately retrieved based on time integrals of UGV-and UAV-derived *** UGV shows the best estimation performance,UAV can show accurate estimates of cultivar sensitivity if the data are properly *** and limitations of UGV,UAV,and visual scoring methods are finally discussed in the perspective of high-throughput phenotyping.

Comparison of Patient Survival after Resection for Pulmonary Carcinoid Tumors Compared to Other Neuroendocrine Tumors: A United States Population Study

Background: We hypothesized: 1) resected pulmonary typical carcinoid (TC) will show a favorable clinical pattern compared to other bronchopulmonary neuroendocrine tumors (BPNETs);and 2) Atypical carcinoid (AC) and large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) patients will have similar outcomes. methods: The Surveillance Epidemiology and End Result database was queried to compare demographics and tumor specific variables in patients undergoing resection for TC, AC, LCNEC and small cell lung cancer (SCLC) from 2001 to 2006. Results: Similar to LCNEC, AC patients had greater incidence of histologic positive lymph nodes compared to TC (P mean survival of 40.0 ± 1.9 months for SCLC, 46.2 ± 2.2 months for LCNEC, 58.3 ± 2.3 months for AC, and 70.2 ± 0.2 months for TC tumors. TC patients demonstrated favorable survival, and SCLC patients poorer survival, compared to AC and LNEC patients (P mors are a BPNET histology that exhibits clinical behavior distinct from TC. AC tumors should be staged, and treated with stage appropriate therapeutic strategies similar to other non-small cell lung cancers.
