Strength Developing in Clay-Andesite Brick

The objective of this work was to develop a more and better understanding of the strength developing in clay-andesite fired brick. The purpose was to improve the quality of the clay bricks that are handmade in the southern region of Ecuador to make them suitable for more widespread use in the local construction industry. To achieve our goal, we first physically, chemically, and mechanically characterized the “clayey” and “sandy” materials used in the fabrication of handmade bricks in the region. Second, the optimal mixture (om): the optimal proportion between the amounts of “clayey” and “sandy” material was sought. Third, clay bricks were prepared using the om, baked at 950°C, and characterized. In addition, bricks produced by regional artisans were characterized, and the results were compared with the results obtained for the bricks prepared using the om. Our data reveal that the optimal mixture is 50% “clayey” material and 50% “sandy” material and that with this mixture, an average improvement in brick quality of 300% can be achieved;thus, the use of the om makes it possible to expand the use of these bricks in the local construction industry and enables an environmentally friendly production process by reducing the intensive exploitation of regional clay deposits. This improvement is achieved by virtue of the anorthite enrichment that occurs in the solid solution, which results from the evolution of andesine. The anorthite contributes to the formation of a stronger matrix among the different grains of the material. Conditions are favorable for this enrichment process to occur when “sandy” materials with high contents of andesite, which is common in Ecuadorian soils, are used.

Soil Formation of "Atlantic rankers" from NW Spain—A High resolution Aluminium and Iron Fractionation Study

Atlantic rankers belong to the group of "cryptopodzolic rankers", which are ubiquitous in the mountainous cool/tempe-rate humid regions of Western Europe. The rankers of Galicia (NW Spain) formed by thousands of years of colluviation. The preponderance of Al-stabilised organic matter (om) masks the horizonation and polycyclic character (i.e., stratifi-cation) of these soils. Cryptopodzolic rankers are generally thought to be the outcome of podzolisation. This soil type is part of the recent discussion on how to classify soils developed from nonvolcanic parent material having andic properties. To better understand the formation processes of these soils, the Al and Fe fractionation of four typical Atlantic rankers were studied by selective dissolution in acid NH4-oxalate, Na-pyrophosphate and the chlorides of K, La and Cu. A high-resolution sampling approach allowed us to investigate the soils in greater detail than simply sampling by horizon. The rankers studied display a distribution of Fe-and Al-om complexes that is typical of cryptopodzolic soils. However, these organomineral associations were probably immobile due to the high Al saturation. We argue that the soils owe their characteristic chemical status to external factors rather than to translocation of organomineral associations: variations in Al-om concentrations could be linked to changes in weathering/leaching intensity and colluviation rates caused by anthropogenic disturbances or changes in regional climate regime.

Fishery resources in Arid Zone mangroves in Gulf of Kachchh, Gujarat, Northwest Coast of India

The finfish and shellfish resources were assessed quantitatively and qualitatively in regard to their abundance in creek waters at three sites within a period of two years, from January 1999 to December 2000, in the western mangrove areas of Kachchh. The catch rate varied from 0.69 to 6.99 kg h-1. It was low during monsoon (July to October), which could be due to the freshwater-flow-induced salinity reduction in all the sites. Among 38 species recorded, 5 were shellfish and 33 were finfish. The spawning period of fishes was found to be during summer and early monsoon period (may to August). Surface water temperatures varied from 17 ℃ to 37 ℃. Salinity values varied from 34 to 44 and the pH ranged between 7 and 8.9. Variation in dissolved oxygen content was from 3.42 to 5.85 mL L-1. The high fishery densities in these semi arid mangrove creek areas were recorded during monsoon and early winter season.

Some authors believed in non-calcemic role of vitamin D as a potential factor in the pathogenesis, prevention, or therapy of pneumonia in this specific age. Purpose: Investigate the Vitamin D status in pneumonia among children between 6 months to 3 years of age. Subjects and Methods: This study was conducted in a Pediatric point of care at Al-Zahraa University Hospital on 90 children aged 6 months to 3 years old;divided into two groups: group I (study group) including 47 patients presented with pneumonia and group II (control group) including 43 apparently healthy children of matched age and sex with no evidence of pneumonia. Context: Individual contributions of obesity and physical fitness (physical ac tivity and functional capacity) to risk of coronary heart disease in women remai n unclear. Objective: To investigate the relationships of measures of obesity (b ody mass index [BmI], waist circumference, waist hip ratio, and waist height r atio) and physical fitness (self reported Duke Activity Status Index [DASI] a nd Postmenopausal Estrogen Progestin Intervention questionnaire [PEPI Q] score s) with coronary artery disease (CAD) risk factors, angiographic CAD, and adverse cardiovascular (CV) events in women evaluated for suspected myocardial ischemia. Design, Setting, and Participants: The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institut e sponsored Womens Ischemia Syndrome Evaluation (WISE) is a multicenter prosp ective cohort study. From 1996-2000,936 women were enrolled at 4 US academic me dical centers at the time of clinically indicated coronary angiography and then assessed (mean follow up, 3.9 [SD,1.8] years) for adverse outcomes. main Outc om e measures: Prevalence of obstructive CAD (any angiographic stenosis ≥50%) and incidence of adverse CV events (all cause death or hospitalization for nonfata l myocardial infarction, stroke, congestive heart failure, unstable angina, or o ther vascular events) during follow up. results: Of 906 women (mean age, 58 [S D , 12] years) with complete data, 19%were of nonwhite race, 76%were overweight (BmI ≥25), 70%had low functional capacity (DASI scores metabolic equivalents [mETs]), and 39%had obstructive CAD. During follow up, 3 37 (38%)-women had a first adverse event, 118(13%) had a major adverse event, and 68 (8%) died. Overweight women were more likely than normal weight women t o have CAD risk factors, but neither BmI nor abdominal obesity measures were sig nificantly associated with obstructive CAD or adverse CV events after adjusting for other risk factors (P=.05 to .88). 冠状动脉内支架植入术321例分析

目的：评价冠状动脉内支架的临床价值。材料与方法：321例冠心病患者冠状动脉内植入451个支架，植入成功率97．8／，其中79．1％（254例）为B2型以上复杂性病变，因DeNovo及Suboptimal病变植入的支架占56.7％（182／321），Bail－out病变16．5％（53／321），再狭窄病变26.8％（86／321）。结果：28例曾行冠状动脉搭桥水患者的28文静脉移植血管（SVG）内植入49个支架，16例急性心肌梗塞患者接受原发支架植入。多支架植入99例，其中植入3个以上支架者26例。支架类型：Palmaz－schatz支架占69.7％（314个），NIr支架占20．6％（93个），其它支架占9．8％（44个）。多数病例使用高压球囊扩张，住院期间发生急性支架血栓形成6例（1．9％），亚急性支架血栓形成2例，其中1例因心肌梗塞死亡，无严重出血并发症。21例（6.5％）术后2－11个月胸痛复发者支架部位再狭窄，再次PTCA。结论：冠脉内支架是一种安全有效的介入性治疗技术．其扩大了PTCA的适应症，成功率高，并发症低，并减少再狭窄的发生。
