The sexually dimorphic expression of glutamate transporters and their implication in pain after spinal cord injury

In addition to the loss of motor function,~60% of patients develop pain after spinal cord *** cellular-molecular mechanisms are not well understood,but the data suggests that plasticity within the rostral,epicenter,and caudal penumbra of the injury site initiates a cellularmolecular interplay that acts as a rewiring mechanism leading to central neuropathic *** can lead to the formation of new connections triggering abnormal sensory *** excitatory glutamate transporters are responsible for the reuptake of extracellular glutamate which makes them a critical target to prevent neuronal hyperexcitability and *** previous studies showed a sexually dimorphic therapeutic window for spinal cord injury after treatment with the selective estrogen receptor modulator *** this study,we investigated the anti-allodynic effects of tamoxifen in male and female rats with spinal cord *** hypothesized that tamoxifen exerts anti-allodynic effects by increasing the expression of glutamate transporters,leading to reduced hyperexcitability of the secondary neuron or by decreasing aberrant *** and female rats received a moderate contusion to the thoracic spinal cord followed by subcutaneous slow-release treatment of tamoxifen or matrix pellets as a control(placebo).We used von Frey monofilaments and the“up-down method”to evaluate mechanical *** treatment decreased allodynia only in female rats with spinal cord injury revealing a sexdependent *** expression profile of glutamatergic transporters(excitatory amino acid transporter 1/glutamate aspartate transporter and excitatory amino acid transporter 2/glutamate transporter-1)revealed a sexual dimorphism in the rostral,epicenter,and caudal areas of the spinal cord with a pattern of expression primarily on *** rodents showed a significantly higher level of excitatory amino acid transporter-1 expression while male rodents showed increased

In this paper,a joint analysis consisting of goodness-of-fit tests and markov chain monte Carlo simulations are used to assess the performance of some ranked set sampling *** markov chain monte Carlo simulations are conducted when Bayesian methods with Jeffery’s priors of the unknown parameters of Weibull distribution are used,while the goodness of fit analysis is conducted when the likelihood estimators are used and the corresponding empirical distributions are *** ranked set sampling designs considered in this research are the usual ranked set sampling,extreme ranked set sampling,median ranked set sampling,and neoteric ranked set sampling *** intensive monte Carlo simulation study is conducted using Lindley’s approximation algorithm to compute the different designs’-based *** study showed that the dependent design“neoteric ranked set sampling design”is superior to other ranked set designs and the total relative efficiency is higher than the other designs’total relative efficiency.

Visual and refractive outcomes of posterior chamber phakic IOL in stable keratoconus

We evaluated the visual and refractive outcomes after phakic visian toric implantable collamer lens(ICL) insertion in stable keratoconus(KC). This retrospective study investigated toric ICL implantation in 14 eyes of 8 patients with stable KC. After 6 mo, the mean uncorrected distance visual acuity improved significantly from 0.77 to 0.15 logmAR. The mean best corrected distance visual acuity(BCdVA) improved from 0.18±0.1 to 0.15±0.1 logmAR. Fifty percent of eyes maintained their preoperative BCdVA; 42.8% gained one line. There was no statistical difference in high order or coma aberration. The mean refractive manifest spherical equivalent(mSE), mean refractive manifest spherical error, mean manifest astigmatism decreased significantly postoperatively. At 6 mo postoperatively, our achieved mean spherical equivalent was approximately 74%. No intraoperative or postoperative complications occurred. Toric ICL implantation was effective, predictable and safe to correct refractive error and improve visual acuity in patients with stable KC.

Localized Corrosion Behavior of 6% mo Super Austenitic & 316L Stainless Steels in Low ph 3% NaCl Solution

Electrochemical techniques were applied to study the crevice corrosion resistance of two types of stainless steel alloys namely, conventional 316L and 6% mo super austenitic in acidified 3% NaCl solution at room *** results showed that 6% mo alloy possessed a remarkable resistance to crevice corrosion compared with 316L alloy when they are tested in the same solution. The breakdown potential at which passivity broke down for 316L alloy was 0.00 mV （SCE）. The corresponding value for 6% mo alloy could not reach up to the potential value of 700 mV （SCE）. 316L alloy suffered extremely from crevice corrosion at room temperature （about 25℃）, which indicates that the critical crevice corrosion temperature, below which crevice corrosion does not occur, was lower than the test temperature. For 6% mo alloy, the critical crevice corrosion temperature was higher than the testing temperature. Electrochemical parameters indicated that 6% mo alloy exhibited higher crevice corrosion resistance than 316L alloy.

Silicon micromirrors with three-dimensional curvature enabling lensless efficient coupling of free-space light

miniaturized optical benches process free-space light propagating in-plane with respect to the substrate and have a large variety of applications,including the coupling of light through an optical *** coupling efficiency is usually obtained using assembled micro-optical parts,which considerably increase the system cost and integration *** this work,we report a high coupling efficiency,monolithically integrated silicon micromirror with controlled three-dimensional(3d)curvature that is capable of manipulating optical beams propagating in the plane of the silicon *** on our theoretical modeling,a spherical micromirror with a microscale radius of curvature as small as twice the Gaussian beam Rayleigh range provides a 100%coupling efficiency over a relatively long optical path *** dimensionless parameters facilitates the elucidation of the role of key design parameters,including the mirror’s radii of curvature,independent of the wavelength.A micromachining method is presented for fabricating the 3d micromirror using fluorinated gas *** measured coupling efficiency was greater than 50%over a 200-mm optical path,compared to less than 10%afforded by a conventional flat micromirror,which was in good agreement with the *** the 3d micromirror,an optical cavity was formed with a round-trip diffraction loss of less than 0.4%,resulting in one order of magnitude enhancement in the measured quality factor.A nearly 100%coupling was also estimated when matching the sagittal and tangential radii of curvature of the presented micromirror’s *** reported class of 3d micromirrors may be an advantageous replacement for the optical lenses usually assembled in silicon photonics and optical benches by transforming them into real 3d monolithic systems while achieving wideband high coupling efficiency over submillimeter distances.

The impedance spectroscopy,electrical conductivity and electric modulus of bulk phenol red were measured,as a function of both frequency and *** neural networks(ANNs)were used for modeling its electrical *** two parts(real and imaginary)of its complex impedance(Z^*)were analyzed and the activation energy related to the electrical relaxation process was *** curves were plotted showing semicircles for the different *** AC electrical conductivity follows a power lawσac(ω)αω^η.The maximum barrier height Bm was derived for specific temperatures.A plausible mechanism for the AC conduction of bulk phenol red was deduced from the temperature reliance of the frequency *** dielectric data was analyzed using electric modulus as a *** addition,ANNs were used to model the impedance parts and the total electrical *** runs were tried,to obtain the best *** training and prediction results were compared to the equivalent experimental results,with a good match *** equation describing the experimental results was obtained mathematically,based on the use of *** outputs demonstrated that ANNs are an admirable tool for modeling experimental results.

direct-acting antivirals sofosbuvir and daclatasvir attenuate carbon tetrachloride-induced liver fibrosis in mice

Background and aim:Advanced liver fibrosis is a major risk for developing hepatocellular carcinoma(hCC)in chronic hepatitis C virus(hCV)***-acting antivirals(dAAs)which are used for treating hCV infection,produce more than 90%cure rate but do not seem to diminish the rate of occurrence or recurrence of *** study aimed to investigate the effect of dAAs sofosbuvir(SOF)and daclatasvir(dAC)on carbon tetrachloride(CCl4)-induced fibrotic changes in ***:Eighty adult male Swiss albino mice were randomly allocated into 8 groups(10 mice/group):normal control group,SOF group(receiving SOF 80 mg/kg body weight(BW),oral gavage,daily),dAC group(receiving dAC 30 mg/kg BW,oral gavage,daily),SOF t dAC group(receiving a combination of both,daily),CCl4 model group(receiving CCl42 mL/kg BW,intraperitoneal twice weekly)and three CCl4-intoxicated groups receiving either SOF or dAC or their *** CCl4 groups received CCl4 for 12 weeks followed by dAAs for another 12 ***:CCl4-induced a significant elevation of alanine aminotransferase(ALT)and aspartate aminotransferase(AST),and produced histopathological evidence of fibrosis and liver degeneration along with a significant increase(P0.001)of the proliferation markers(proliferating cell nuclear antigen(PCNA)and Ki-67),hepatic stellate cells(hSCs)activation markers(alpha-smooth muscle actin(a-SmA)and glial fibrillary acidic protein(GFAP)),fibrosis marker(matrix metalloproteinase-9(mmP-9))and proinflammatory cytokine(tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNF-a)).CCl4-intoxicated mice treated with SOF,dAC,or their combination revealed a significant amelioration(P0.001)of CCl4-induced elevation of liver enzymes,fibrotic changes,and liver degeneration along with a significant attenuation(P0.001)of CCl4-induced upregulation of all tested *** effects of SOF,dAC,and their combination on liver enzymes were comparable while the effect of SOF t dAC combination on mitigating CCl4-induced upregulation of the
