The main cable bent around the saddle of the suspension bridge is subjected to the wind,the vehicle,the bridge’s own weight and the corrosive *** coupling of the three loads and the environments causes the friction,the corrosion,and the fatigue(tribo-corrosion-fatigue)among the wires inside the main *** this paper,a wire bending tribo-corrosion-fatigue test rig was designed and *** effect of fatigue load on the bending friction behaviors between the cable wires in ultrapure water and 3.5%NaCl solution was *** tribological properties and electrochemical corrosion behaviors under different fatigue loading ranges were *** tribo-corrosion-fatigue interaction between the cable wires was quantitatively characterized,and the mechanism of the interaction was *** results demonstrate that the increasing fatigue load exacerbates the coupling damage of the cable wires attributed to the enhanced *** findings carry theoretical importance when assessing the main cable’s deterioration and the load-bearing safety of a suspension bridge.

Braking efficiency is characterized by reduced braking time and distance,and therefore passenger safety depends on the design of the braking *** the braking of a vehicle,the braking system must dissipate the kinetic energy by transforming it into heat energy.A too high temperature can lead to an almost total loss of braking *** excessive rise in brake temperature can also cause surface cracks extending to the outside edge of the drum friction *** transfer and temperature gradient,not to forget the vehicle’s travel environment(high speed,heavy load,and steeply sloping road conditions),must thus be the essential criteria for any brake system *** aim of the present investigation is to analyze the thermal behavior of different brake drum designs during the single emergency braking of a heavy-duty vehicle on a steeply sloping *** calculation of the temperature field is performed in transient mode using a three-dimensional finite element model assuming a constant coefficient of *** this study,the influence of geometrical brake drum configurations on the thermal behavior of brake drums with two different materials in grey cast iron FG200 and aluminum alloy 356.0 reinforced with silicon carbide(SiC)particles is analyzed under extreme vehicle braking *** numerical simulation results obtained using FE software ANSYS are qualitatively compared with the results already published in the literature.

Optical properties and radiative rates of Nd^(3+) doped zinc-sodium phosphate glasses

Preparation using melt quenching technique and optical characterizations of Nd^(3+) doped Zn-Na phosphate glasses are presented. The structure of the present glasses was studied using X-ray diffraction and FT-IR spectroscopy. UV-vis spectra of the present glasses were analyzed at different concentrations of Nd_2 O_3. The effect of neodymium concentration on the density and energy band gap was investigated. The density of the present glasses slightly increases with the increasing of Nd_2 O_3. A small variation of energy band gap with the increasing of neodymium content is observed as well, while E_g values decrease with the increase of Nd_2 O_3 content. The E_g values lie between 4.36 and 4.69 eV. Based on the measured optical spectra, Judd-Ofelt theory was used to determine the optical parameters such as line strengths, optical intensity parameters(Ω_t), transition probabilities, and transition lifetimes. Hypersensitive transitions were identified in the absorption spectrum, the greatest line strengths are recorded at the transitions^2 G_(7/2)+ ~4 G_(5/2), ~4 S_(3/2) + ~4 F_(7/2) and ~4 D_(1/2) + ~4 D_(3/2)+ ~4 D_(5/2) + ~2 I_(11/2) with wavelengths of 580, 475 and 355 nm,respectively. Lifetimes of the important ~4 F_(3/2) laser-level were determined; which show decreasing trend with the increasing of Nd_2 O_3 content and are found to be between 0.838 and 1.595 ms. The uncertainty of the present results was estimated. The RmS deviations were determined, which show lower values than those in the literature.

In finite element modeling of impact,it is necessary to define appropriate values of the normal contact stiffness,Kn,and the Integration Time Step(ITS).Because impacts are usually of very short duration,very small ITSs are ***,the selection of a suitable value of Kn is a critical issue,as the impact behavior depends dramatically on this *** this work,a number of experimental tests and finite element analyses have been performed in order to obtain an appropriate value of Kn for the interaction between a bristle of a gutter brush for road sweeping and a concrete ***,a suitable ITS is *** experiments consist of releasing a steel bristle that is placed vertically at a certain distance from a concrete surface and tracking the ***,in the finite element analyses,a beam is modeled in free fall and impacting a surface;contact and target elements are attached to the beam and the surface,*** results of the experiments and the modeling are integrated through the principle of conservation of energy,the principle of linear impulse and momentum,and Newton’s second *** results demonstrate that,for the case studied,Kn and the impact time tend to be independent of the velocity just before impact and that Kn has a very large variation,as concrete is a composite material with a rough ***,the ratio between the largest height of the bristle after impact and the initial height tends to be constant.

Road sweeping is an essential service that has to be conducted for public health,as well as aesthetic *** many countries,sweeping vehicles are used for this *** usually comprise a gutter brush that sweeps the debris that is located in the road *** work studies the performance of two kinds of gutter brushes:a cutting brush and a flicking(F128)*** is carried out by means of a 3-D dynamic,nonlinear Finite Element(FE)brush model developed by the *** this model,inertia forces are applied to the bristle,and its clamped end is ***,the surface(road)is rotated,translated,and ***-road interaction is modelled as flexible-to-rigid *** particular,the aim of this article is to compare the performance of a conventional brush and a brush rotating at variable *** brushes normally work tilted,FE analyses are carried out for tilted cutting and F128 brushes,rotating at speeds that fluctuate at different *** is concluded that brush oscillations have a significant effect on bristle tip velocities and bristle-road ***,at certain frequencies,oscillations seem to improve sweeping performance of the F128 ***,they do not appear to improve significantly the performance of the cutting brush.

Vaginal Trachelectomy for Retained Cervical Stump after Supracervical Hysterectomy: Technical Tips and Outcomes

Background and Objectives: The supracervical hysterectomy (SCH) has resulted in a group of patients with a retained cervix at risk of persistent symptoms, who may require a trachelectomy in the future. This study was to evaluate the efficacy of vaginal trachelectomy (VT) after a previous SCH. methods: This was a prospective study that includes 13 cases with different ages and different complaints, sharing the same primary operation supracervical hysterectomy. They have different pathologies of the SCH specimen but they share the same completion surgery. The surgical outcome was analyzed. Results: Thirteen patients underwent vaginal trachelectomy for recurrent symptoms. The ages of patients were ranged from 37 years to 68 years (mean ± SD, 56.4 ± 10.7). SCH was most commonly performed for abnormal uterine bleeding AUB (7/13, 53.8%), pelvic mass (5/1, 38.5%), and pelvic pain (1/13, 7.7%), the symptoms leading to vaginal trachelectomy were the same as those leading to supracervical hysterectomy. The median interval time from SCH to seeking medical help for the persistence or recurrence of symptoms and to VT was 2 weeks (1 to 96 weeks). Concomitant procedures were laparoscopic removal of both ovaries in 2 cases and pelvic lymphadenectomy in 1 case. The median length of operation was 45 minutes. In all cases, symptoms leading to trachelectomy resolved completely after surgery, and patients reported a significant improvement. Conclusions: The cervix, left behind at subtotal hysterectomy, requires removal, the vaginal route is probably the safest, and least traumatic. Vaginal radical trachelectomy appears to be feasible and safe for the treatment of endometrial malignancy discovered after supracervical hysterectomy.

Removal of arsenite by reductive precipitation in dithionite solution activated by UV light

This study investigates the removal of arsenite（As（III）） from water using dithionite activated by UV light. This work evaluated the removal kinetics of As（III） under UV light irradiation as affected by dithionite dose and light intensity, and characterized the nature of the precipitated solids using XPS and SEm-EDS. Photolysis of dithionite was observed by measuring dithionite concentration using UV absorbance at 315 nm. This study also investigated the effect of UV light path length on soluble As concentrations to understand resolubilization mechanisms. Total soluble As concentrations were observed to decrease with reaction time due to reduction of arsenite to form solids having a yellow-orange *** removal mechanism was found to be reductive precipitation that formed solids of elemental arsenic or arsenic sulfide. However, these solids were observed to resolubilize at later times after dithionite had been consumed. Resolubilization of As was prevented and additional As removal was obtained by frequent dosing of dithionite throughout the experiment. As（III） removal is attributed to photolysis of dithionite by UV light and production of reactive radicals that reduce As（III） and convert it to solid forms.

This paper presents an adapted stabilisation method for the equal-order mixed scheme of finite elements on convex polygonal meshes to analyse the high velocity and pressure gradient of incompressible fluid flows that are governed by Stokes equations *** technique is constructed by a local pressure projection which is extremely simple,yet effective,to eliminate the poor or even non-convergence as well as the instability of equal-order mixed polygonal *** this research,some numerical examples of incompressible Stokes fluid flow that is coded and programmed by mATLAB will be presented to examine the effectiveness of the proposed stabilised method.

Novel CYP1B1 mutations and a possible prognostic use for surgical management of congenital glaucoma

AIm: To identify CYP1B1 gene mutations and evaluate their possible role as a prognostic factor for success rates in the surgical management of Egyptian congenital glaucoma ***: Totally 42 eyes of 29 primary congenital glaucoma patients were operated on with combined trabeculotomy/trabeculectomy with mitomycin-C and followed up at 1 d, 1 wk, 1, 6 and 12 mo postoperatively. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood leukocytes. Coding regions of CYP1B1 gene were amplified using 13 pairs of primers, screened for mutations using single-strand conformation polymorphism followed by sequencing of both strands. Efficacy of the operation was graded as either a success [maintaining intraocular pressure(IOP) less than 21 mm Hg with or without antiglaucoma medication], or a failure(IOP more than 21 mm Hg with topical antiglaucoma medications). RESULTS: Seven novel mutations out of a total of 15 different mutations were found in the CYP1B1 genes of 14 patients(48.2%). The presence of CYP1B1 gene mutations did not correlate with the failure of the surgery(P=0.156, odds ratio=3.611, 95%CI, 0.56 to 22.89); while the positive consanguinity strongly correlated with failure of the initial procedure(P=0.016, odds ratio=11.25, 95%CI, 1.57 to 80.30). However, the Kaplan-meier survival analysis revealed a significantly lower time of IOP control in the subgroup with mutations in CYP1B1 versus the congenital primary glaucoma group without mutations(log rank test, P=0.015).CONCLUSION: Seven new CYP1B1 mutations are identified in Egyptian patients. Patients harboring confirmed mutations suffered from early failure of the initial surgery. CYP1B1 mutations could be considered as a prognostic factor for surgery in primary congenital glaucoma.
