Tribo-mechanical and Electrochemical Properties of Carbonitrided 316 Austenitic Stainless Steel by rf Plasma for Biomedical Applications

AISI 316 austenitic stainless steel was carbonitrided using rf plasma with purpose of using low-cost orthopedic implant materials in biomedical applications besides the manufacturing requests. The plasma treatment process was accomplished at low working gas pressure of 0.075 mbar in nitrogen-acetylene gaseous mixture. The plasma-processing time was fixed at 10 min while the plasma-processing power was varied from 450 to 650 watt. The effect of plasma treatment power on the structure, tribological, mechanical, electrochemical and biocompatibility of AISI 316 has been investigated. The structural results demonstrated the formation of nitrogen and carbon solid solutions, chromium nitride, iron carbide and iron nitride phases in the treated samples. The microhardness of the treated layer increases with increasing the processing power to reach a maximum value of approximately 1300 HV0.1 at 600 W which represents more than 6-folds increase in microhardness in comparison with the untreated matrix. The wear and corrosion resistance of the treated AISI 316 were enhanced compared to the untreated one. The friction coefficient was reduced from nearly 0.5 for the untreated substrate to nearly 0.3 for the carbonitrided sample. The surface energy and wettability of the carbonitrided samples were augmented as the plasma-processing power increased. furthermore, the numbers of grown mesenchymal stem cells are higher for carbonitrided samples compared to the untreated one. The formation of nitrogen and carbon solid solution, chromium nitride, iron nitride and iron carbide hard phases after carbonitriding process is responsible for achieving good mechanical, tribological, biocompatibility and electrochemical properties for AISI 316 alloys.

Long-Term Trends of Carbon monoxide Total Columnar Amount in Urban Areas and Background Regions:Ground-and Satellite-based Spectroscopic measurements

A comparative study was carried out to explore carbon monoxide total columnar amount（CO TC） in background and polluted atmosphere, including the stations of ZSS（Zvenigorod）, ZOTTO（Central Siberia）, Peterhof, Beijing, and moscow,during 1998–2014, on the basis of ground-and satellite-based spectroscopic measurements. Interannual variations of CO TC in different regions of Eurasia were obtained from ground-based spectroscopic observations, combined with satellite data from the sensors mOPITT（2001–14）, AIRS（2003–14）, and IASI met Op-A（2010–13）. A decreasing trend in CO TC（1998–2014） was found at the urban site of Beijing, where CO TC decreased by 1.14% ± 0.87% yr^（-1）. meanwhile, at the moscow site, CO TC decreased remarkably by 3.73% ± 0.39% yr^（-1）. In the background regions（ZSS, ZOTTO, Peterhof）, the reduction was 0.9%–1.7% yr^（-1） during the same period. Based on the AIRSv6 satellite data for the period 2003–14, a slight decrease（0.4%–0.6% yr^（-1）） of CO TC was detected over the midlatitudes of Eurasia, while a reduction of 0.9%–1.2% yr^（-1） was found in Southeast Asia. The degree of correlation between the CO TC derived from satellite products（mOPITTv6 Joint, AIRSv6 and IASI met Op-A） and ground-based measurements was calculated, revealing significant correlation in unpolluted *** in polluted areas, IASI met Op-A and AIRSv6 data underestimated CO TC by a factor of 1.5–2.8. On average, the correlation coefficient between ground-and satellite-based data increased significantly for cases with PBL heights greater than 500 m.

The master equation for the cluster-size distribution function is solved numerically to investigate the electron-hole droplet formation claimed to be discovered in the direct-gap CuCl excited by picosecond laser pulses [Nagai et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 86(2001)5795; J. Lumin. 100(2002)233]. Our result shows that for the excitation in the experiment, the average number of pairs per cluster (ANPC) is only around 5.2, much smaller than that (106 typically for Ge) of the well studied electron-hole droplet in indirect-gap semiconductors such as Ge and Si. These results indicate that what measured in CuCl by Nagai et al. may not come from the EHD formed from exciton gas, instead possibly come from some bubbles of excitons in metallic liquid.

In this paper,some remarks for more efficient analysis of two-dimensional elastostatic problems using the method of fundamental solutions are ***,the effects of the distance between pseudo and main boundaries on the solution are investigated and by a numerical study a lower bound for the distance of each source point to the main boundary is *** some cases,the resulting system of equations becomes ill-conditioned for which,the truncated singular value decomposition with a criterion based on the accuracy of the imposition of boundary conditions is ***,a procedure for normalizing the shear modulus is presented that significantly reduces the condition number of the system of *** solving two example problems with stress concentration,the effectiveness of the proposed methods is demonstrated.

Background Schistosomiasis is highly endemic in sub-Saharan Africa and frequently imported to Europe. male urogenital manifestations are often neglected. We aimed to ascertain the prevalence of genitourinary clinical signs and symptoms among long-term African migrants in a non-endemic European country using a serology *** We carried out a prospective, community-based cross-sectional study of adult male migrants from sub-Saharan Africa living in *** serology tests and microscopic urine examinations were carried out, and clinical data were obtained from an electronic medical record search and a structured *** We included 388 adult males, mean age 43.5 years [Standard Deviation (SD) = 12.0, range: 18–76]. The median time since migration to the European Union was 17 [Interquartile range (IQR): 11–21] years. The most frequent country of origin was Senegal (N = 179, 46.1%). Of the 338, 147 (37.6%) tested positive forSchistosoma. Parasite eggs were present in the urine of only 1.3%. Nine genitourinary clinical items were significantly associated with positiveSchistosoma serology results: pelvic pain (45.2%;OR = 1.57, 95%CI: 1.0–2.4), pain on ejaculation (14.5%;OR = 1.85, 95%CI: 1.0–3.5), dyspareunia (12.4%;OR = 2.45, 95%CI: 1.2–5.2), erectile dysfunction (9.5%;OR = 3.10, 95%CI: 1.3–7.6), self-reported episodes of infertility (32.1%;OR = 1.69, 95%CI: 1.0–2.8), haematuria (55.2%;OR = 2.37, 95%CI: 1.5–3.6), dysuria (52.1%;OR = 2.01, 95%CI: 1.3–3.1), undiagnosed syndromic STIs (5.4%), and orchitis (20.7%;OR = 1.81, 95%CI: 1.0–3.1). Background: Reduced kidney function in blacks is associated with an increased frequency of left ventricular hypertrophy. Given the unavailability of echocardiography in most developing countries, the diagnostic performance of current ECG indexes needs to be evaluated. Objective: To compare the diagnostic performance of 3 commonly used ECG indexes (Sokolow-Lyon, Cornell voltage and Cornell product) in black hypertensive patients. methods: Electrocardiography and echocardiography estimated left ventricular mass of 155 consecutive hypertensive patients who participated from January 2012 to January 2013 to an echocardiographic cross-sectional study of left ventricular structure was analyzed to compare Cornell voltage and Cornell product indexes with Sokolow-Lyon voltage index as a reference. Reduced kidney function was defined as eGfR 2. ROC curves in relation to LVH diagnosis were used to estimate the sensitivities and specificities of each index. P Results: The sensitivity and specificity were 43% and 85%, 23% and 77% and 26% and 77% for Sokolow-Lyon, Cornell voltage and Cornell product indexes, respectively. However, Sokolow-Lyon index (AUC;95% CI: 0.64;0.50 - 0.78) showed better performance than Cornell voltage (0.42;0.25 - 0.59) and Cornell product (0.43;0.28 - 0.59). Sokolow-Lyon index cut-point ≥ 37 mm corresponded to the highest Youden index (39.4% of sensitivity and 92.3% of specificity). Conclusion: Although the overall performance of the 3 ECG indexes versus echocardiography was low, Sokolow-Lyon index performed better than the two other indexes in diagnosing LVH.

Importance of Air-Sea Coupling in Simulating Tropical Cyclone Intensity at Landfall

An atmosphere-only model system for making seasonal prediction and projecting future intensities of landfalling tropical cyclones(TCs)along the South China coast is upgraded by including ocean and wave models.A total of 642 TCs have been re-simulated using the new system to produce a climatology of TC intensity in the South China *** comparisons of the simulations from the atmosphere-only and the fully coupled systems reveal that the inclusion of the additional ocean and wave models enable differential sea surface temperature responses to various TC characteristics such as translational speed and *** particular,interaction with the ocean does not necessarily imply a weakening of the TC,with the coastal bathymetry possibly playing a role in causing a near-shore intensification of the *** results suggest that to simulate the evolution of TC structure more accurately,it is essential to use an air-sea coupled model instead of an atmosphere-only model.

Experimental study of electro-optical-switched pulsed Nd:YAG laser

We report the specification of a compact and stable side diode-pumped Q-switched pulsed Nd：YAG laser. We ex- perimentally study and compare the performance of the pulsed Nd：YAG laser in the free-running and Q-switched modes at different pulse repetition rates from 1 Hz to 100 Hz. The laser output energy is stabilized by using a special configu- ration of the optical resonator. In this laser, an unsymmetrical concave-concave resonator is used and this structure helps the mode volume to be nearly fixed when the pulse repetition rate is increased. According to the experimental results in the Q-switched operation, the laser output energy is nearly constant around 70 mJ with an fWHm pulse width of 7 ns at 100 Hz. The optical-to-optical conversion efficiency in the Q-switched regime is 17.5%.
