Frequency of typhoon occurrence accounts for the Poisson distribution of human leptospirosis cases across the different geographic regions in the Philippines

Objective: To study the distribution of human leptospirosis cases across the different geographic regions in the Philippines in 2015-2017 and to determine the relationship between the frequency of typhoon occurrence and human leptospirosis cases. methods: Information on the frequency of leptospirosis cases and typhoon occurrence across the different regions in the Philippines from 2015 to 2017 was retrieved from the databases of the Department of Health and the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration, respectively. Descriptive measures on the prevalent cases and occurrence of typhoons across the different regions were summarized. linear regression analysis was employed to establish the functional relationship between leptospirosis cases and typhoon occurrence. The distribution of human leptospirosis cases was assessed using the Poisson distribution. Results: The frequency of typhoon occurrence accounted for the significant linear variation in the geographic distribution of human leptospirosis cases in the Philippines(Pmoreover, the human leptospirosis cases obeyed a Poisson distribution(λ=6.89, Plusions: The Philippines has frequently experienced severe weather perturbations such as typhoons resulting in flooding and subsequently increasing the risk of transmitting bacterial infections including leptospirosis. Information obtained regarding the determinants and distribution of human leptospirosis will provide better understanding of the disease propagation for subsequent design of optimal disease prevention measures, appropriate resource allocation, effective control strategies, and necessary public health programs.

metal-halide perovskites are revolutionizing the world of X-ray detectors,due to the development of sensitive,fast,and cost-effective ***-powered operation,ensuring portability and low power consumption,has also been recently demonstrated in both bulk materials and thin ***,the signal stability and repeatability under continuous X-ray exposure has only been tested up to a few hours,often reporting degradation of the detection *** it is shown that self-powered direct X-ray detectors,fabricated starting from a FAPbBr_(3)submicrometer-thick film deposition onto a mesoporous TiO_(2)scaffold,can withstand a 26-day uninterrupted X-ray exposure with negligible signal loss,demonstrating ultra-high operational stability and excellent *** structural modification is observed after irradiation with a total ionizing dose of almost 200 Gy,revealing an unexpectedly high radiation hardness for a metal-halide perovskite thin *** addition,trap-assisted photoconductive gain enabled the device to achieve a record bulk sensitivity of 7.28 C Gy^(−1)cm^(−3)at 0 V,an unprecedented value in the field of thin-film-based photoconductors and photodiodes for“hard”***,prototypal validation under the X-ray beam produced by a medical linear accelerator for cancer treatment is also introduced.

Nutritional Status, Food Consumption at Home, and Preference-Selection in the School

To assess the relationship between food consumption at home, nutritional status, gender preference and the preference-selection of natural products (fruits and vegetables) and industrialized (candies and chips) in a situation of free access for a population of mexican schoolchildren. 115 children participated in the test, 59 boys and 56 girls from second, fourth and sixth grade of elementary school. We have taken measures of weight, size and the 24-hour consumption record during over five days, at which time also we evaluated the preference and selection of a group of ten products (naturals and industrialized). According to the results 60% of children had normal weight, 23.47% overweight, 14.8% risk of overweight an 1.73% underweight. There were no significant differences with X2 test between nutritional status and gender. multivariate analysis was applied between gender, consumption by food groups and nutritional status, the interaction was significant in all cases. The Pearson correlation between preference and food choice in the situation of open access is high in the school students at risk of overweight. The preferred and selected products for consumption are those with the highest content of saturated fat, sugars and salt, the less preferred and selected products were fruits and vegetables. We could conclude that the population is at risk for their low consumption of fruits and vegetables;situation that is reflection of the home consumption this document.

lanthanum-exchanged zeolite and clay as anticorrosive pigments for galvanized steel

A wide variety of inhibitive pigments is now being offered as possible alternatives to chromate and lead compounds for painted metals protection. Unfortunately, the most wide spread of these substitute pigments, zinc phosphate, has, at present, raised some environmental concern because phosphate causes the eutrophication of water courses and zinc itself is toxic. The aim of this re-search was to study the anticorrosive performance of a mixture consisting of zinc phosphate, modified zeolite and clay （bentonite） in order to diminish phosphate content in paints. The zeolite and the clay were exchanged with la（III） ions, as inorganic green inhibitor. In the first step, the anticorrosion protection by la（III） ions in solution was assessed by electrochemical tests. In the second step, an epoxy-polyamide paint formulated with the pigment mixture applied on galvanized panels was studied by salt spray test and electro-chemical noise measurements （ENm）. The results showed that it was possible to replace part of the zinc phosphate content in the paint with the exchanged zeolite and the clay.

Background:None of the published studies involving cancer cachexia experimental models have included a measure of the severity of the syndrome like the scoring system previously developed for human *** aim of the present investigation was to define and validate a cachexia score usable in both rat and mouse tumor ***:In order to achieve this goal,we included in the study one rat model(Yoshida AH‐130ascites hepatoma)and two mouse models(lewis lung carcinoma and Colon26 carcinoma).The Animal cachexia score(ACASCO)includes five components:(a)body and muscle weight loss,(b)inflammation and metabolic disturbances,(c)physical performance,(d)anorexia,and(e)quality of life measured using discomfort symptoms and behavioral ***:Using the ACASCO values,three cut‐off values were estimated by applying hierarchical cluster *** groups were originally described,one exactly below the observed mean,a second exactly over the mean,and two other groups adjusted to every cue(inferior and superior).The three cut‐off values were estimated through maximization of the classification *** was accomplished by using a similarity matrix based on the metric properties of the variables and assuming multinormal *** results show that the four groups were:no cachexia,mild cachexia,moderate cachexia and advanced ***:The results obtained allow us to conclude that the score could be very useful as an endpoint in pre‐clinical studies involving therapeutic strategies for cancer *** potential usefulness of ACASCO relates to the primary endpoint in pre‐clinical cancer cachexia drug evaluations.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to compare the rates of open and laparoscopic cholecystectomies and outcomes in patients with or without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2Dm) in Spain from 2003 to 2013. mETHODS: We collected all cases of open and laparoscopic cholecystectomies using national hospital discharge data and evaluated the annual cholecystectomy rates stratiifed by T2Dm status. We analyzed tendency for in-hospital mortality (IHm). We also analyzed the impact of T2Dm on IHm in patients who underwent cholecystectomies. RESUlTS: We identiifed 611 533 cholecystectomies (71.3%laparoscopic) in the patients, in whom 78 227 (12.8%) patients had T2Dm. The rates of open cholecystectomies were 3-fold higher (130.0/105 vs 41.1/105) in patients with T2Dm than in those without T2Dm, and the rate of laparoscopic cholecys-tectomies was almost 2-fold higher (195.2/105 vs 111.8/105) in patients with T2Dm. The annual rate of laparoscopic pro-cedures showed an 11-year relative increase of 88.3% (from 117.0/105 to 220.3/105) in T2Dm and 49.2% (from 79.2/105 to 118.2/105) in patients without T2Dm (Plative decrease of 27.6% in patients with T2Dm and 37.9% in those without T2Dm (Pmergency laparoscopic cho-lecystectomy was increased in the 11 years, whereas the rate of emergency open cholecystectomies was decreased (both Pmultivariate analysis revealed that older age, higher comorbidity and emergency cholecystectomy were associated with a higher IHm. Compared with patients without T2Dm, patients with T2Dm demonstrated a lower IHm after open cholecystectomy [OR=0.82 (0.78-0.87)], but a higher IHm after laparoscopic cholecystectomy (OR=1.18 (1.03-1.35))Time-trend analyses showed a signiifcant reduction in IHm in patients with or without T2Dm after the two procedures. We perform a comparison in terms of accuracy and CPU time between second order BDF semi-lagrangian and lagrange-Galerkin schemes in combination with high order finite element *** numerical results show that for polynomials of degree 2 semi-lagrangian schemes are faster than lagrange-Galerkin schemes for the same number of degrees of freedom,however,for the same level of accuracy both methods are about the same in terms of CPU *** polynomials of degree larger than 2,lagrange-Galerkin schemes behave better than semi-lagrangian schemes in terms of both accuracy and CPU time;specially,for polynomials of degree 8 or ***,we have performed tests on the parallelization of these schemes and the speedup obtained is quasi-optimal even with more than 100 processors.
