Stereotactic body radiation therapy for non-small cell lung cancer:A review

Stereotactic body radiation therapy(SBRT) is the treatment of choice for medically inoperable patients with early stage non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC). A literature search primarily based on Pubmed electronic databases was completed in July 2018. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were determined prior to the search, and only prospective clinical trials were included. Nineteen trials from 2005 to 2018 met the inclusion criteria, reporting the outcomes of 1434 patients with central and peripheral early stage NSCLC. Patient eligibility,prescription dose and delivery, and follow up duration varied widely. Threeyears overall survival ranged from 43% to 95% with loco-regional control of up to 98% at 3 years. Up to 33% of patients failed distantly after SBRT at 3 years. SBRT was generally well tolerated with 10%-30% grade 3-4 toxicities and a few treatment-related deaths. No differences in outcomes were observed between conventionally fractionated radiation therapy and SBRT, central and peripheral lung tumors, or inoperable and operable patients. SBRT remains a reasonable treatment option for medically inoperable and select operable patients with early stage NSCLC. SBRT has shown excellent local and regional control with toxicity rates equivalent to surgery. Decreasing fractionation schedules have been consistently shown to be both safe and effective. Distant failure is common, and chemotherapy may be considered for select patients. However, the survival benefit of additional interventions, such as chemotherapy, for early stage NSCLC treated with SBRT remains unclear.

Epidemiological Aspects and Clinicopathological Findings in Cats Naturally Infected with Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) and/or Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)

Infections produced by feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukemia virus (FeLV), two of the most prevalent pathogens in cats, range from passing unnoticed to presenting a wide variety of clinical signs. Different epidemiological, clinical, hematological and virological parameters were analyzed in 78 FIV- and/or FeLV-infected cats. FeLV-infected (FeLV+) cats were considerably younger than FIV-infected (FIV+) cats, and in general were seen to have a more severe disease than FIV+ cats. Around one third of the cats presented anemia, and neutropenia was also frequently observed. Though a higher percentage of FIV+ than FeLV+ cats had altered leukocyte counts, FeLV+ cats had altered counts of both neutrophils and lymphocytes more frequently than FIV+, which usually presented only either altered neutrophils or lymphocyte counts. Virological markers were only detected in FeLV+cats, either as mono- or dual-infection, and correlated with the severity of the disease, but not in FIV+ cats. In conclusion, these results suggest that FeLV affects more blood cell types and provokes death of affected animals at a much earlier age than FIV and that the severity of the disease seemed to depend on the viral status of the cat.

Thermal energy management in metal-organic frameworks(mOFs)is an important,yet often neglected,challenge for many adsorption-based applications such as gas storage and *** its importance,there is insufficient understanding of the structure-property relationships governing thermal transport in *** provide a data-driven perspective into these relationships,here we perform large-scale computational screening of thermal conductivity k in mOFs,leveraging classical molecular dynamics simulations and 10,194 hypothetical mOFs created using the ToBaCCo 3.0 *** found that high thermal conductivity in mOFs is favored by high densities(>1.0 g cm^(−3)),small pores(metal *** also found that 36 mOFs exhibit ultra-low thermal conductivity(m^(−1) K^(−1)),which is primarily due to having extremely large pores(~65Å).Furthermore,we discovered six hypothetical mOFs with very high thermal conductivity(>10 W m^(−1) K^(−1)),the structures of which we describe in additional detail.

Processor for measuring Radio Network Design Quality

In this paper we present the design and prototyping of an arithmetic processor based on reconfigurable technology, whose purpose is to determine in a parallel manner the quality of the solution in a radio network design optimization problem. This problem consists in the search for an optimal set of locations in which to place radio antennas in order to obtain the maximum possible coverage, for a given terrain and antenna characteristics. The original computational contribution of this work is to use programmable logic devices to avoid the high cost of computing the evolutionary algorithms required to tackle this optimization problem. This is achieved by means of reconfigurable processors working in parallel. On the basis of the results obtained from the prototype, it may be considered a parallel architecture capable of achieving a great acceleration in the calculations.

Cedrela odorata is a tropical tree widely appreciated for its wood. Commercial plantations are frequently hampered by the attack of the meliacea borer, Hypsipyla grandella, and the lack of resistant varieties. C. odorata traditional breeding would consume very long periods of time, thus direct transfer of entomotoxic coding genes to generate resistant varieties is a promising alternative. There are two prerequisites for gene manipulation of this species: 1) to set the conditions for transgene delivery and 2) to have a way to select regenerating transformed plants. In this paper, we report the optimal biolistics conditions for transient expression of uidA and gfp reporter genes in C. odorata somatic embryos and the selective doses for kanamycin, spectinomycin, phosphinotrycin and hygromycin to screen transformed cells.

Demographic aging is one of the most serious challenges facing our *** we live longer,we do not live better because it is considered that approximately 16–20%of our life is spent in late-life *** people have the greatest risk of developing frailty increasing the risk of presenting various adverse health events such as low quality of life,disability,hospitalization and even *** men and women over 65 years old have lower muscle quality and muscle mass and higher percentage of body fat than non-frail people of the same *** this review we will address the main physiological changes in the muscular and nervous system associated to *** specifically we will review the changes in muscle mass,quality,and strength relating them with the decrease in capillarization and muscular oxidative capacity as well as with the alterations in protein synthesis in the muscle with *** last section of the manuscript will be devoted to the animal models of frailty and the indexes developed to measure frailty in these *** will finally address the importance of exercise training as an intervention to delay or even reverse frailty.

multiple myeloma is a hematological malignancy inwhich clonal plasma cells proliferate and accumulate within the bone marrow. The presence of osteolytic le-sions due to increased osteoclast(OC) activity and sup-pressed osteoblast(OB) function is characteristic of the disease. The bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells(mSCs) play a critical role in multiple myeloma patho-physiology, greatly promoting the growth, survival, drug resistance and migration of myeloma cells. Here, we specifically discuss on the relative contribution of mSCs to the pathophysiology of osteolytic lesions in light of the current knowledge of the biology of my-eloma bone disease(mBD), together with the reported genomic, functional and gene expression differences between mSCs derived from myeloma patients(pmSCs) and their healthy counterparts(dmSCs). Being mSCs the progenitors of OBs, pmSCs primarily contribute to the pathogenesis of mBD because of their reduced osteogenic potential consequence of multiple OB inhibi-tory factors and direct interactions with myeloma cells in the bone marrow. Importantly, pmSCs also readily contribute to mBD by promoting OC formation and ac-tivity at various levels(i.e., increasing RANKL to OPG expression, augmenting secretion of activin A, uncou-pling ephrinB2-EphB4 signaling, and through augment-ed production of Wnt5a), thus further contributing to OB/OC uncoupling in osteolytic lesions. In this review, we also look over main signaling pathways involved in the osteogenic differentiation of mSCs and/or OB activity, highlighting amenable therapeutic targets; in parallel, the reported activity of bone-anabolic agents(at preclinical or clinical stage) targeting those signaling pathways is commented.

The dietary phytochemicals curcumin （CUR） and sulforaphane （SFN） have shown remarkable cancer chemopreventive effects in many model systems. This study was designed to investigate the induction of Nrf2-mediated antioxidant enzymes by combining doses of CUR and SFN and the effect of their combination on the Nrf2-ARE （antioxidant response element） response in HepG2-C8 cells. We hypothesized that the combination of the polyphenol CUR and the isothiocyanate SFN could enhance the induction of AREs and Nrf2-target enzymes. HepG2-C8 cells were treated with a combination of low doses of CUR, SFN or both. The induction of Nrf2-mediated antioxidant and phase II detoxifying enzymes-heme oxygenase-1 （HO-I） and UDP-glucuronosyltransferase-1A （UGT1A）-was measured by real-time RT-PCR and western blotting. ARE-luciferase activity was also quantified. Low doses of CUR （10 ~tm） and SFN （12.5 ~tm） significantly induced the expression of HO-1 and UGT 1 A1 proteins. Through the use of chemical inhibitors of mRNA and protein synthesis, the combination of CUR and SFN was shown to affect the transcriptional regulation of both HO-1 and UGT1A1. Additionally, the combination of CUR and SFN synergistically induced the expression of Nrf2- and ARE-luciferase activity in HepG2-C8 cells. Thus, CUR and SFN at low concentrations augment therapeutic effects in HepG2-C8 cells. The enhanced ARE-luciferase activity of combined CUR and SFN treatment could partly explain the significant induction of the Nrf2-target enzymes HO-1 and UGT1A1. Taken together, our results suggest that combining low doses of CUR and SNF could be a promising strategy for cancer chemoprevention in humans.
