L-Arginine Levels among Hypertensive Patients in Sokoto, North Western Nigeria

Hypertension is a major public health problem that adversely affects the health status of individuals, families and communities. L-arginine levels of a total of 90 consecutively-recruited hypertensive subjects and 50 age-matched non-hypertensive controls were studied. Plasma from subjects and control participants were analyzed for L-arginine. The mean values of L-arginine level were significantly lower among the hypertensive subjects which are (174.33 ± 78.31 μmol/L) compared to those of the 50 non-hypertensive controls (237.82 ± 261.16 μmol/L) (p = 0.04). There was no statistically significant difference in the L-arginine levels of hypertensive subjects based on gender, age and ethnici-ty (p = 0.87, 0.23 and 0.57) respectively. The L-arginine level was significantly higher among married hypertensive subjects (181.71 ± 78.17 μmol/L) compared to single or unmarried subjects (130.62 ± 65.99 μmol/L) (p = 0.03). The mean value of L-arginine level was significantly higher among hypertensive subjects with mild blood pressure (187.63 ± 77.93 μmol/L) compared to those with high blood pressure (156.93 ± 76.31 μmol/L). The difference however was not statistically significant (p = 0.05). The findings from this study confirm that the level of L-arginine is lower among hypertensive subjects compared to non-hypertensive controls. Age, gender and ethnicity did not have a significant effect on the L-arginine levels of hypertensive subjects. L-arginine level was significantly lower among single hypertensive patients and those with markedly raised blood pressure. It is recommended the L-arginine supplement be prescribed to hypertensive patient as a prophylactic measure. There is a need to enlighten hypertensive patients in the area on the need to maintain a balanced diet containing sufficient level of L-arginine.

Thermal fatigue test has been carried out on widely used hot work steel 4Cr5moSiV1 and a low alloyed steel 3Cr3moV in temperature range of 200 to 700 ℃. Tempering resistance, as well as high temperature hardness/ strength of steel specimens, works as a dominating material parameter on thermal fatigue resistance. During the heating period, high hardness can depress the inelastic deformation. This deformation is the origination of tensile stress, which acts as the driving [orce o{ heat checking during the cooling period. The cyclic strain-oxidation interac- tion can speed up the damage on surface defects, which plays an obvious role in initiation of thermal cracks. On 4CrSmoSiV1 steel specimens, borders between the matrix and inclusions such as titanium compounds, or lager car- bides such as primary carbides, are focused by strain and attacked by oxidation, and are main initiating places of cracks. While on 3Cr3moV steel specimens, larger strain causes plastic deformation concentrating around grain boundaries. Then the following oxidation accelerates this grain boundary damage and creates cracks.

Disturbances in bone mineralization are frequent in cystic fibrosis but few st udies have focused on the use of biphosphonates in this indication, and none on the use of oral etidronate. We report our experience using this latter treatment . methods. -The study was retrospective and included five children and three ad ults with cystic fibrosis (six males and two females) aged seven to 30:years wit h Z-scores for lumbar bone density lower than-2:SD after one year of calcium ( 1:g/day) and vitamin D (900:UI/day and 300:000:UI/6:months) supplementation. All were treated during one year with etidronate: four courses of 15:days (one cour se per trimester) with doses ranging from 4 to 8:mg/kg per day. Calcium and vita min D supplementation was continued between the etidronate treatment course. Tot al body and lumbar bone mineral density (bmD) were measured three times: at the beginning and the end of the year of calcium and vitamin D supplementation and at the end of the year of supplementation plus the four courses of etidronate treatment. Resu lts. -The increase in bmD in absolute value (g/cm2) and in Z-score was signifi cantly higher (P mbined supplementation and etidron ate treatment (total body g/cm2: 3 ±1%, Z-score: 2 ±1%and lumbar spine g/cm 2: 6 ±5%, Z-score: 3 ±4%) than after supplementation alone (total body g/cm 2:-1 ±3%, Z-score:-4 ±3%and lumbar spine g/cm2:-1 ±3%, Z-score:-4 ± 4%). Supplementation alone improved the total bmD in only one patient and the l umbar bmD in three, whereas after etidronate treatment the total and lumbar bmD were improved in the eight patients. None of the patients presented with side ef fects that could be attributed to the treatment. Conclusion. -Oral etidronate t reatment is well-tolerated and capable of improving bone mineralization in pati ents with cystic fibrosis. Further work will be necessary to determine the optim al dosage and the optimal frequency for the treatment series.

Plants, just like any other living organism, naturally get attacked by various pathogenic microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi and viruses. However, unlike animals that utilize their specialized circulatory macrophage system to protect themselves, plants instead use a multi-layered complex system termed the plant innate immunity, which recognizes pathogens and transducing downstream defense responses. They have developed a unique type of trans-membrane receptors or R proteins, which extracellularly, are capable of recognizing pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAmP) such as flagellin and chitin, while intracellularly, they activate their harbored nucleotide cyclases (NCs) such as adenylyl cyclases (ACs), to generate second messenger molecules such as 3’,5’-cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAmP), which then propagates and magnifies the defense response. To date, only a single R protein from Arabidopsis thaliana (AtLRR) has been shown to possess AC activity as well as having the ability to defend plants against infection by biotrophic and hemi-biotrophic pathogens. Therefore, in order to further broaden information around the functional roles of this protein (AtLRR), we explored it further, using an array of web-based tools or bioinformatics. These included structural analysis, anatomical expression analysis, developmental expression analysis, co-expression analysis, functional enrichment analysis, stimulus-specific expression analysis and promoter analysis. Findings from structural analysis showed that AtLRR is a multi-domain, trans-membrane molecule that is multi-functional, and thus consistent with all known R-proteins. Findings from anatomical and developmental expression analyses showed that AtLRR is mostly expressed in pollen grains and flowers, senescing leaves as well as during the development of seeds, shoots, roots, seedlings, leaves, flowers, and siliques, linking it to the three key plant physiological processes of reproduction, defense and developme

The structural and magnetic properties of essentially phase pure AlFe2b2prepared by arc melting were compared with a sample containing impurities. Analysis was carried out by means of synchrotron X-ray diffraction, magnetic measurements and m?ssbauer spectroscopy. The analysis of synchrotron X-ray diffraction data confirmed the orthorhombic structure of space group Cmmm for AlFe2b2with Al13Fe4as main impurity phase. The magnetic measurements revealed an unsaturated ferromagnetic state in AlFe2b2with a transition temperature（Tc） of 286 K. Isothermal magnetization measurment at 5 K gave a saturation magnetization of 0.7 μb per Fe atom while Arrott plots establish the second order nature of ferromagnetic transition. The thermal evolution of m?ssbauer spectra confirmed the ferromagnetic nature of this material revealing an hyperfine field of 73 kOe and an isomer shift of 0.46 mm/s at 100 K. The m?ssbauer spectra of a phase pure sample was compared with the one containing impurity phases. It is suggested that the low temperature paramagnetic contribution in m?ssbauer spectra of phase pure material may have its origin in some intrinsic phenomena arising from defects or inhomogeneities in crystal structure.

Phylogenetic relationships for bemisia tabaci were reconstructed by analysis of a ～780 bp fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (mtCOI) gene with an emphasis on geographic range and distribution among eight eudicot plant families that are common hosts of b. tabaci worldwide to elucidate key phylogeographic linkages between populations extant in China (n=31) and India (n=34). bootstrap values for the maximum Parsimony tree were highly robust for all major nodes involving the major Asian clade, subgroups, and sister groups within, at 92%—100%. between-clade distances for the Southeast Asia and three other major clades, e.g. from sub-Sahara Africa, North Africa-mediterranean, and the Americas, were approximately >16% divergent. Two major Asian subgroups (I, II) were resolved, which represented populations indigenous to the region, comprising two (I a, I b) and five (II a—e) sister groups, respectively, which diverged by 11%. Two distinct populations from sunflower in Hyderabad grouped separately within the two Asian subgroups. All other populations grouped uniquely within Asian subgroup II or I. The "b" biotype was identified in 23 collections from China at 97.3%—99.5% nucleotide identity with "b" biotype reference sequences; it was not identified in collections from India. The majority of haplotypes were associated with 3—4 plant families, with one exception that for sister group IId (sesame, India), it might be monophagous. Thus, b. tabaci from the southeastern and near eastern regions of the Asian continent comprise of a large number of ancestral, richly divergent, mostly polyphagous populations. This region is therefore hypothesized to constitute an important Old World center of diversification for the b. tabaci complex, together with sub-Saharan Africa.
