Prevalence of metabolic syndrome, obesity and diabetes type 2 in cryptogenic cirrhosis

AIm: To evaluate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (mS), obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2Dm) in a group of mexican mestizo patients with cryptogenic cirrhosis (CC) and to compare this group with patients with cirrhosis secondary to other causes (disease controls). mETHoDS: Patients with CC, diagnosed between January, 1990 and April, 2005, were included in a retrospective study. Patients with cirrhosis caused by chronic hepatitis C, alcohol abuse or autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) served as disease controls. RESULTS: A total of 134 patients with CC were analyzed. Disease controls consisted of 81 patients with chronic hepatitis C, 33 with alcohol abuse and 20 with AIH. The median age of patients with CC was 57 years (range, 16-87); 83 (61.9%) patients were female; 53 (39.6%) were Child A, 65 (48.5%) Child B, and 16 (11.9%) were Child C cirrhosis. The prevalence of mS (29.1% vs 6%; P obesity (16.4% vs 8.2%; P = 0.04) and T2Dm (40% vs 22.4%; P = 0.013) was higher in CC patients than in disease controls. There were no differences in sex, age or liver function tests between the two groups. CoNCLUSIoN: The prevalence of mS, obesityand T2Dm were higher in patients with CC than in patients with cirrhosis secondary to others causes. our findings support the hypothesis that non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) plays an under-recognized role in CC.

Field and Numerical Tests of the Two-Ponding Depth Procedure for Analysis of Single-Ring Pressure Infiltrometer Data

The two-ponding depth （TPD） analysis procedure of single-ring infiltrometer data can yield invalid results, i.e., negative values of the field-saturated soil hydraulic conductivity or the matric flux potential, denoting failure of the two-level run. The objective of this study was to test the performance of the TPD procedure in analyzing the single-ring infiltrometer data of different types of soils. A field investigation carried out in western Sici]y, Italy, yielded higher failure rates （40%） in two clay loam soils than in a sandy loam soil （25%）. A similar result, i.e., fine-textured soils yielding higher failure rates than the coarse-textured one, was obtained using numerically simulated infiltration rates. Soil heterogeneity and reading errors were suggested to be factors determining invalid results in the field. With the numerical data, allowing a less generic definition of soil heterogeneity, invalid TPD results were occasionally obtained with the simultaneous occurrence of a high random variation （standard deviation ≥ 0.5） and a well developed structural correlation for saturated hydraulic conductivity （correlation length 〉 20 cm）. It was concluded that a larger number of replicated runs should be planned to characterize fine-textured soils, where the risk to obtain invalid results is relatively high. Large rings should be used since they appeared more appropriate than the small ones to capture and average soil heterogeneity. Numerical simulation appeared suitable for developing improved strategies of soil characterization for an area of interest, which should also take into account macropore effects.

Durum Wheat Bread： old sicilian Varieties and Improved ones

In mediterranean countries and particularly in Southern Italy, durum wheat （Triticum durum Desf.） is traditionally used for bread production. market globalization has created, also in these regions, the spread of bread made with soft wheat flour （Triticum aestivum L.） standardizing this product flattening consumers＇ taste. With the aim of re-evaluating the old sicilian local varieties, some landraces, chosen from the genebank of the institute, have been multiplied on farmers＇ fields to have enough material for making bread and for comparing this product with bread made by improved new varieties. Before milling in the pilot plant, the different wheats were characterized for their merceological indexes. The semolina obtained was analyzed for its chemical parameters. Rheological tests were conducted on dough and, finally, using standardized methods, one-variety breads were produced. on the bread slices, computerized image analysis was performed to measure colour and morphological parameters of crumb and crust. Sensory analysis, achieved through a descriptive profiling test, was conducted with trained judges using touch, fragrance and taste attributes for the different bread types. The different merceological, chemical and theological properties of raw material, grain and semolina were reflected in the breads prepared using old or improved varieties. Finally, the data obtained pointed out that the bread prepared with old and improved varieties can be clearly distinguished both by objective morphological parameters （image analysis） and by sensorial evaluations, for a potential traceability of typical product.

Grafting affects yield and phenolic prof ile of Solanum melongena L. landraces

The influence of grafting on agronomical and qualitative characteristics of four sicilian eggplant landraces was investigated. Grafted and ungrafted plants were compared in the open field in the northern coast of Sicily. Solanum torvum seedlings were used as rootstock. Regardless of genotypes tested, grafting significantly increased total fruit production, marketable production, and number of marketable fruits, but did not affect weight of marketable fruits and waste production. Landrace 2（Sciacca）, with black epidermal tissue and pyriform fruit shape, when grafted onto S. torvum not only gave a higher yield performance than ungrafted plants, but also showed a higher phenolic antioxidant content. Landrace 4（sicilia）, with black epidermal tissue and small cylindrical fruits also benefited, when grafted onto S. torvum, from a substantial increase in antioxidant fruit content. As consumers＇ demand for fruits and vegetables rich in compounds important for human health is steadily increasing, these landrace/rootstock combinations should deserve more attention by plant nurseries involved in grafted seedling production and interested in the valorization and conservation of eggplant biodiversity.
