Prevalence and Resistance Pattern of Pseudomonas aeruginosaIsolated from Surface Water

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the most common pathogenic bacteria, frequently found in different environmental samples. The prevalence of multidrug resistant isolates has become an alarming concern for both patients and their surroundings. The present study was carried out to record prevalence of P. aeruginosa in surface water of Dhaka city and to screen their antibiotic resistance pattern. The study was also extended to typing of resistant isolates according to extended spectrum beta lactamase production. Hereby, Kirby-Bauer method was applied to test antibiotic sensitivity according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute. Then, the Ampicillin resistant isolates were screened for ESBL production by Double Disk Synergy Test (DDST). In these prospects, 52 water samples were tested, of which 32 were found positive for P. aeruginosa isolates. Hundred percent of the positive isolates were found to Ampicillin (AmP) resistant followed by 93.7% to both Tetracycline and Gentamycin and 71.8% to Co-triimoxazole. P. aeruginosa is completely susceptible to third generation antibiotics ciprofloxacin, Imipenem and Aztreonam followed by moderately susceptible to Polymyxin-B (78.2%) and Colistin (87.5%). According to DDST, all of the susceptible isolates were found positive for AmC type beta-lactamase production. It is evident from this study that the surface water is contaminated with antibiotic resistant P. aeruginosa and that through the water systems antibiotic resistance can be transferred to humans and animals. So, appropriate and rationale use of antibiotic should be applied to minimize the emergence of multidrug isolates to environment.

Background: Extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) are enzymes capable of hydrolyzing extended-spectrum cephalosporins, penicillins and monobactams but inactive against cephamycins and carbapenems. The ESBL-producing organisms are a breed of multidrug-resistant pathogens. Objectives: This study was aimed to determine the susceptibility pattern of ESBL-producing Escherichia coli to ciprofloxacin, amikacin and imipenem. methods: A total of 75 ESBL-producing E. coli, were obtained from the tertiary care hospitals of Bangladesh and were studied for susceptibility pattern from October, 2010 to December, 2011. These isolates were identified by double disc synergy test (DDST) and were confirmed phenotypically as ESBL-producer by phenotypic confirmatory disc diffusion test (PCDDT). minimum inhibitory concentrations (mICs) of ciprofloxacin, amikacin and imipenem among ESBL-producing E. coli were determined using agar dilution method. Results: Out of 75 DDST positive ESBL-producing E. coli, 71 (94.67%) were also positive by PCDDT. All ESBL-producing E. coli, were susceptible to imipenem. About 92.95% ESBL-producing E. coli were susceptible to amikacin but only 14.08% were susceptible to ciprofloxacin. Conclusion: In this study, ESBL-producing E. coli, showed high resistance to ciprofloxacin. Imipenem and amikacin were most effective against ESBL positive strains.

Influence of Reactive Volatile Organic Compounds on Ozone Production in Houston-Galveston-Brazoria Area

Secondary pollutant ozone (O3) formation in a particular area is often influenced by various factors. Source of emissions is one of the factors. In south east Texas, Houston-Galveston-Brazoria (HGB) is a marginal non-attainment area for ozone (O3). A summer episode of may 28 to July 2, 2006 is simulated using Comprehensive Air Quality model with extensions (CAmx). During this period O3 concentration in HGB often exceeds the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) 0.075 ppm of average 8 hour O3 concentration. HGB area has numerous point sources. Various studies found that some specific volatile organic compounds are very reactive in atmosphere. The objective of this study is to analyze the influence of volatile organic compounds present in point source emissions on the air quality of HGB area. For this purpose ozone sensitivity for HGB area is analyzed by the ratio of hydrogen peroxides (H2O2) to nitric acid (HNO3). HGB area is found NOx limited but reactive VOCs are found to be influential too. From (1-4 June, 2006) maximum O3 concentration was found on weekend, June 3. VOCs such as Acetaldehyde (ALD2), Formaldehyde (FORm) and Alkane (ETHA) showed good correlation with O3 concentrations on that day. In addition, Peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) formation was found correlated to higher ozone production. Criteria pollutant Sulfur dioxide (SO2) was found to influence the ALD2 and ETHA concentrations, and thus indirectly influenced O3 production.

The peripheral rivers of Dhaka city became highly polluted because of industrialization and urbanization to a greater extent in the last few ***,an attempt has been taken to measure 48 elements in water of the river Buriganga using the ICP-mS method for the first ***,it could be the reference values for future research in *** of the 48 elements,the following metals are given more attention because of their detrimental effects on living organisms and for discussing their aquatic chemistry in polluted water body:Be,Na,Al,Cr,mn,Fe,Ni,Cu,Zn,Cd,Ba,Hg,Pb,Bi and *** revealed that metals’concentrations in water in the monsoon were less than that of the winter,however,Cr and Fe were found at below detection limits in the winter that is *** parameters of the river water such as pH,dissolved oxygen play vital roles for hydrolysis reactions in the stagnant water *** products of metal ions having low values of solubility products(K sp),for example,iron(III)hydroxide,chromium(III)hydroxide,phase out through precipitation *** study also detects and quantifies total concentrations of Hg and U in water of the river Buriganga for the first *** and correlation matrix results provided potential sources of the relevant *** of hydrolysis and precipitation reactions for metal ions in the polluted river water are also discussed.

Effect of 3 mol% Yttria Stabilized Zirconia Addition on Structural and mechanical Properties of Alumina-Zirconia Composites

Alumina-Zirconia (Al2O3-ZrO2) composites especially Zirconia Toughened Alumina (ZTA) shows better mechanical properties over alumina. Al2O3-ZrO2 composites were prepared by powder compaction method varying 3 mol% yttria stabilized zirconia (3Y-ZrO2) content from 0 to 20 vol% using small amount of mgO as sintering aid. The composites were sintered for two hours in air at 1580°C. At this temperature maximum density was achieved 99.31% of theoretical density for composite containing 20 vol% 3Y-ZrO2. Density measurement of sintered composites was carried out using Archimedes’s method. Hardness and fracture toughness measurement was carried out using Vickers indentation. Phase content and t-ZrO2 retention were detected by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD). microstructure of the composites and grain size of alumina and zirconia was determined by Scanning Electron microscopic (SEm) analysis. maximum microhardness (17.46 GPa) was achieved for composite containing 5 vol% ZrO2 and maximum flexural strength (684.32 mPa) and fracture toughness (10.33 mPam0.5) was achieved for composite containing 20 vol% of 3Y-ZrO2. The aim of the present work is to investigate the optimum 3Y-ZrO2 content for obtaining maximum density, microhardness, flexural strength and fracture toughness of Al2O3-ZrO2 composites.

madhupur Sal forest is one of the major forests in Bangladesh which is also under intimidation of severe deforestation due to settlement of the ethnic people and encroachment for farming. However, deforestation is one of the major factors responsible for climatic change events like recurrent natural calamities and degradation of natural resources. Thus, a pilot project was taken in the forest area by Bangladesh Agricultural University to minimize carbon emission through introduction of low emission agricultural practices (vermi-compost and botanical pesticide) in crop production and to increase women’s participation in social forestry program. It also introduced improved cooker in the study area for reducing amount of fire wood for cooking. Video mediated extension approach was used to teach the people of the forest community regarding the consequences of climate change on their livelihoods. Findings showed that, project beneficiaries are now impressively aware on consequences of climate change issues. Around 75% of them are now using own made vermi-compost and botanical pesticide in agricultural production mixed with social forestry, while 42% of them are using improved cooker which has significantly reduced amount of fire wood for cooking. This is ultimately contributing in minimizing the rate of deforestation. However, the project initiatives have created alternate income opportunities of the forest community people through safe and organic cultivation of vegetables and fruits in the leased land. On the other hand, this social forestry programme will directly contribute in reducing consequences of climate change in the long run.

Improvised Technique for Analyzing Data and Detecting Terrorist Attack Using machine Learning Approach Based on Twitter Data

Social media are interactive computer mediated technology that facilitates the sharing of information via virtual communities and networks. And Twitter is one of the most popular social media for social interaction and microblogging. This paper introduces an improved system model to analyze twitter data and detect terrorist attack event. In this model, a ternary search is used to find the weights of predefined keywords and the Aho-Corasick algorithm is applied to perform pattern matching and assign the weight which is the main contribution of this paper. Weights are categorized into three categories: Terror attack, Severe Terror Attack and Normal Data and the weights are used as attributes for classification. K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) and Support Vector machine (SVm) are two machine learning algorithms used to predict whether a terror attack happened or not. We compare the accuracy with our actual data by using confusion matrix and measure whether our result is right or wrong and the achieved result shows that the proposed model performs better.

Background: Cystic hygromas are primarily found in the cervicofacial, thoracic, and abdominal regions, with limited occurrences in other areas. Despite existing literature on this condition, comprehensive descriptions and mRI findings of cystic hygromas in the extremities are rare. Aim: This case report aims to present a unique instance of a cystic hygroma in the left thigh. The objective is to provide detailed insights into the characteristics of this atypical presentation. Case Presentation: The case involves a 2-year-10 month-old girl with a cystic hygroma in her left thigh. The report includes a comprehensive description of the lesion’s clinical features and diagnostic evaluation, emphasizing the mRI findings to enhance understanding of this rare occurrence. Conclusion: This case report highlights the rarity of cystic hygromas outside the cervicofacial, thoracic, and abdominal regions, explicitly focusing on the occurrence in the left thigh. By presenting detailed insights into the clinical features, mRI findings, histopathological findings, and the surgical approach employed, this report contributes to the existing knowledge on this condition in atypical locations and informs future treatment strategies.

Hydrogel Fibre: Future material of Interest for Biomedical Applications

Exploration on hydrogel fibres concerning about smart based application in the medical sector has stimulated great interests for the last couple of years due to its wide range of purposes that include actuators, artificial adhesives, transplantable tissue organs, cell scaffolds, cell therapeutics, wound healing, cartilage or bone regeneration. Nevertheless, recently hydrogel fibre based biomaterials have drawn great concentration for use in a wide variety of biomedical applications like the sustained release of drugs. This is due to the fact that, hydrogel fibers are biocompatible and their similarity about physical properties is in relation with natural tissue. This review article prescribes about the application of hydrogels with diversified prospects in tissue engineering, wound care dressings, soft tissue recovery and plastic surgery. As the products of hydrogels are composed with a group of polymeric materials, the hydrophilic network structure makes them competent for holding an immense quantity of water in their three-dimensional polymer network structure. A wide-ranging application of these products in modern industrial and environmental areas has already taken into account to be of prime importance. Inevitably, natural hydrogels right is now gradually replaced by synthetic types due to their larger amount of water absorption capacity, durability alongside with wide ranges of raw chemical resources.

Costing Principles of a Denim Pant

Denim pant is a significant prospect for the RmG sector of Bangladesh with an enormous future. The pricing is the most important factor obtainable in the global competitive market without having any suspicion. It is difficult to exist in the apparel market without providing lowest costing of garment. The study focuses on the entire factor that is directly related to the FOB cost of a basic denim pant where includes fabric cost, trims & accessories cost, storing, cost of making charge, washing cost, testing cost, commercial cost and profit is shown chronologically. All the calculations of the study were done on the basis of an industrial frame work and both primary and secondary data were collected from six different denim pant manufactures and exporters. The study provided convinced principle of fabric consumption, thread consumption, Cm calculation, required poly;cartoons calculations and costing were done very carefully. The study also provides potential wash and testing, so that the total price ranges can be contained as well as demonstrating total FOB cost. The manufacturers, exporters, retailer and consumers of denim pant will get the apparent method of costing and its parameter.
