Background: HPV infection represents an important etiologic factor for Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OPSCC). The different ethnic backgrounds could be related to different susceptibility to Human Papillomavirus (HPV). The aim of our study was to assess the whole of genetic ancestry in HPV status in OPSCC patients. methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study on patients with OPSCC admitted to the Barretos Cancer Hospital, Brazil from 2014 to 2019. Of these, DNA extraction was performed on 40 patients and genetic ancestry was assessed using a specific panel of 46 informative ancestry markers. Results: We observed a predominance of European ancestry (63%), followed by African (18%), Amerindian (9%) and Asian (8%) both in the OPSCC HPV-positive and HPV-negative group. We did not find any statistically significant differences between the HPV-positive and HPV-negative OPSCC groups in relation to European (p = 0.499), African (p = 0.448), Asian (p = 0.275) or Amerindian (p = 0.836) ancestry. Conclusions: We found a predominance of European ancestry, both in the HPV-positive and HPV-negative groups. In our study, we did not find statistically significant differences between HPV-positive or HPV-negative groups in relation to ancestry.

The microstructures of B2-ordered nia1 containing α-Fe precipitates have been investigated in terms of transmission electron microscopy. Fine precipitation of α-Fe (bcc structure) occurs in nia1 by aging around 973K. The aging behavior was investigated by microhandness measurements and the temperature dependence of the yield strength of precipitate- comaining B2- ordered nia1 was investigated by compression tests over the temperature range of 673-1273K. The fine precipitation of α-Fe was found to enhance greatly the low and intermediate temperature yield strength. When the deformation temperature is over 1073K, the strength of precipitate- containing nia1 was comparable to ternary solid solution hardening nia1-Fe. Dislocations bypass the particles during deformation and typical Orowan loops were observed surrounding the or-Fe particles after deformation.

Background: There is increasing evidence that the failure to recover from proactive semantic interference (frPSI) may be an early cognitive marker of preclinical Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, it is unclear whether frPSI effects reflect deficiencies in an individual’s initial learning capacity versus the actual inability to learn new semantically related targets. Objective: The current study was designed to adjust for learning capacity and then to examine the extent to which frPSI, proactive semantic interference (PSI) and retroactive semantic interference (RSI) effects could differentiate between older adults who were cognitively normal (CN), and those diagnosed with either Pre-mild Cognitive Impairment (PremCI) or amnestic mCI (amCI). methods: We employed the LASSI-L cognitive stress test to examine frPSI, PSI and RSI effects while simultaneously controlling for the participant’s initial learning capacity among 50 CN, 35 amCI, and 16 PremCI participants who received an extensive diagnostic work-up. Results: amCI and PremCI participants showed greater frPSI deficits (50% and 43.8% respectively) compared to only 14% of CNparticipants. PSI effects were observed for amCI but not PremCI participants relative to their CN counterparts. RSI failed to differentiate between any of the study groups. Conclusion: By using participants as their own controls and adjusting for overall learning and memory, it is clear that frPSI deficits occur with much greater frequency in individuals at higher risk for Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and likely reflect a failure of brain compensatory mechanisms.

Depression is highly correlated with Alzheimer’s disease(AD),but treatment for the comorbidity of both is lacking. Phosphodiesterase-4(PDE4),an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of cyclic AmP(cAmP),has been considered as a promising target for treatment of both memory loss in AD and depression. Using mouse models of AD,potent PDE4 inhibitors,and PDE4-subtype knockout mice,we demonstrated that PDE4,in particular the PDE4 D isoform,plays an important role in the comorbidity of memory loss and depression in AD. Treatment with the PDE4 inhibitor rolipram or roflumilast reversed memory deficits in novel object recognition and morris water-maze tests in APP/PS1 double transgenic and 3 xTg-AD mice,which are widely used models for AD. Similarly,in the tail-suspension and forced-swimming tests,the PDE4 inhibitors reversed the decreased immobility in AD mice,suggesting antidepressant-like effects. The effects of PDE4 inhibitors were mimicked in the tests using mice deficient in PDE4 D,which displayed memory-enhancing and antidepressant-like effects,relative to the WT mice microinfused with beta-amyloid peptide 1-42 into the hippocampus. In addition,the PDE4 inhibitor treatment reversed the decreased ratio of Bcl-2/BAX and inhibited the increased expression of PDE4 D in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus of AD mice. Further,the PDE4 inhibitors reversed the decreased levels of cAmP and expression of phosphorylated cAmP response element-binding protein(CREB) and brain derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF) in AD mice. These were mimicked by PDE4 D deficiency and treatment with a PDE4 D relatively selective inhibitor. In conclusions,these results suggest that PDE4 is an important target for the comorbidity of memory loss and depression in AD,which appears to be mediated by PDE4 D-cAmP signaling.
