Role of Genetic Ancestry in Oropharyngeal Squamous-Cell Carcinoma: A Cross-Sectional Study in Brazil

Background: HPV infection represents an important etiologic factor for Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OPSCC). The different ethnic backgrounds could be related to different susceptibility to Human Papillomavirus (HPV). The aim of our study was to assess the whole of genetic ancestry in HPV status in OPSCC patients. methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study on patients with OPSCC admitted to the Barretos Cancer Hospital, Brazil from 2014 to 2019. Of these, DNA extraction was performed on 40 patients and genetic ancestry was assessed using a specific panel of 46 informative ancestry markers. Results: We observed a predominance of European ancestry (63%), followed by African (18%), Amerindian (9%) and Asian (8%) both in the OPSCC HPV-positive and HPV-negative group. We did not find any statistically significant differences between the HPV-positive and HPV-negative OPSCC groups in relation to European (p = 0.499), African (p = 0.448), Asian (p = 0.275) or Amerindian (p = 0.836) ancestry. Conclusions: We found a predominance of European ancestry, both in the HPV-positive and HPV-negative groups. In our study, we did not find statistically significant differences between HPV-positive or HPV-negative groups in relation to ancestry.

mitsugumin 29 (mG29) is a transmembrane protein that is normally found in the triad junction of skeletal muscle. Our previous studies have shown that targeted deletion of mg29 from the skeletal muscle resulted in abnormality of the triad junction structure, and also increased susceptibility to muscle fatigue. To elucidate the basis of these effects, we investigated the properties of Ca2+-uptake and -release in toxin-skinned Extensor Digitorium Longus (EDL) muscle fibers from control and mg29 knockout mice. Compared with the control muscle, submaximal Ca2+-uptake into the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) was slower and the storage of Ca2+ inside the SR was less in the mutant muscle, due to increased leakage process of Ca2+ movement across the SR. The leakage pathway is associated with the increased sensitivity of Ca2+/caffeine -induced Ca2+ release to myoplasmic Ca2+. Therefore, the increased fatigability of mutant EDL muscles can result from a combination of a slowing of Ca2+ uptake, modification of Ca2+-induced Ca2+ release (CICR), and a reduction in total SR Ca2+ content.

In the face of new diseases, medicine needs to reinvent itself in order to contain and control epidemics, such as the one we have recently faced, COVID-19, a disease with a wide spectrum of clinical severity. A new moment has been established, since the application of well-known, effective and safe medications for other diseases, has shown high success rates in the treatment of COVID-19. Thereunto, studies with early intervention are needed, which can change the unfavorable outcome of patients. In this article, we report the successful experience using an oral strategy during the collapse of Belem (Para, Brazil) Health System. Two hundred and ten patients were diagnosed with respiratory failure due to COVID-19, with no option of hospital treatment due to lack of beds and resources. These patients were then started on therapeutic regimen consisting of 40 mg prednisolone, 40 mg enoxaparin and macrolides (500 mg clarithromycin, 500 mg axetylcefuroxime) associated and followed in outpatient facilities. Two hundred and eight patients had an excellent therapeutic response and there were only two fatalities. These results push research boundaries, valuing outpatient treatment with early use of prednisolone in the initial pulmonary phase, preventing severe COVID-19 pneumonitis. Adoption of the proposed treatment intends to reduce the need for hospitalization, as well as lethality, with social robust benefits and incalculable economic savings since involves the use of accessible, safe and not expensive medications.

Neurovascular interactions are crucial for the normal development of the central nervous system. To study suchinteractions in primary cultures, we developed a procedure to simultaneously isolate neural progenitor and endothelialcell fractions from embryonic mouse brains. Depending on the culture conditions endothelial cells were found to favormaintenance of the neuroprogenitor phenotype through the production of soluble factors, or to promote neuronal differ-entiation of neural progenitors through direct contact. These apparently opposing effects could reflect differential cellularinteractions needed for the proper development of the brain.

Aims Understanding succession in tropical forest is an important aspect of vegetation science,but to date,successional processes in sea-sonally dry tropical forests(SDtFs)have received much less atten-tion than evergreen humid tropical *** aim to fill this knowledge *** We investigated vegetation succession in SDtF areas consisting of three different successional stages(early,intermediate,late),and a SDtF-savanna ecotone in the municipal district of Juramento,north of minas Gerais State,*** twelve 400 m2 plots in each area,we compared vegetation parameters and structural variables(absolute density and basal area)and examined the floristic composition of the tree component to find gradients of *** Findings We found evidence of species turnover along a successional gradi-ent,with the intermediate stage showing the highest species rich-ness and *** was accompanied with a significant increase in the number of tree individuals and basal area from the early to intermediate successional ***,the intermediate and late SDtF successional stages were more similar in structure and *** ecotone was the most species rich and was similar to the intermediate SDtF and early successional stage in species richness and floristic composition *** results will have implications for guiding SDtF management and recovery programs.

Trace element geochemistry and Sr-Nd characteristics of mesoproterozoic mafic intrusive rocks from Rondonia, Brazil, SW Amazonian Craton： Petrogenetic and tectonic inferences

The Amazonian Craton comprises an Archean domain surrounded by four successively younger Proterozoic tectonic provinces. Within the Rio-Negro-Juruena province the Serra da Providência Intrusive Suite (1.60 and 1.53 Ga) consists of A-type rapakivi granites, charnockites and mangerites genetically associated with diabase dikes, gabbros and amphibolites. The original mafic melts were derived from a depleted mantle source (εNd(T) +2.5 to +2.8; εSr(T) -12.1). Underplated mafic magma induced melting of a short-lived felsic crust, thus originating coeval felsic-mafic magmatism in a continental intraplate setting. The Colorado Complex, assigned to the Rondonian-San Ignacio province, comprises 1.35-1.36 Ga intrusive bimodal magmatism represented by monzonite gneisses associated with amphibolite, gabbro and metadiabase dikes intercalated with metasediments with detrital zircon that yield U-Pb ages of 1.35 to 1.42 Ga. mafic samples display juvenile signatures (εNd(T) 0.0 to +5.2; εSr(T) -5.0 to -30.7) and are less contaminated than the Serra da Previdência and Nova Brasilândia ones. The generation of the basaltic magma is related to the subduction of an oceanic slab below the peridotite wedge (intraoceanic arc setting). Fluids and/or small melts from the slab impregnated the mantle. The Nova Brasilândia Sequence (Sunsas-Aguapeí province) comprises a metasedimentary sequence intruded by 1.10-1.02 Ga metadiabases, gabbros, meta-gabbros, and amphibolites associated with granitic plutons (bimodal magmatism). The original tholeiitic magmas, derived from a depleted source (εNd(T) = +3.1 to +5.0), in a proto-oceanic setting, underwent subsequent contamination by the host rocks, as indicated by the isotopic and trace element data.

The slippery slope framework explains tax compliance along two main dimensions,trust in authorities and power of authorities,which influence taxpayers’compliance *** frequentist and Bayesian analyses,we investigated the framework’s assumptions on a sample of 2786 self-employed taxpayers from eleven post-communist and non-post-communist countries doing business in five economic *** using scenarios that experimentally manipulated trust and power,our results confirmed the framework’s assumptions regarding the attitudes of the self-employed taxpayers;trust and power fostered intended tax compliance and diminished tax evasion,trust boosted voluntary tax compliance,whereas power increased enforced tax ***,self-employed taxpayers from post-communist countries reported higher intended tax compliance and lower tax evasion than those from non-post-communist *** results offer tax authorities insights into how trust and power may contribute to obtaining and maintaining high tax compliance levels amid global economic challenges,downturns,and increasing tax compliance costs.

The relationship between anxiety about prostate cancer among patients with biochemical cancer recurrence and the use of complementary and alternative medicines,diet,and exercise

Objective:We aimed to explore associations between anxiety and specific health behaviors such as complementary and alternative medicine(CAm),diet,and exercise among prostate cancer ***:PCa patients enrolled in a prospective cohort study of men with biochemical cancer recurrence were surveyed about use of CAm,diet,and *** was measured with the memorial Anxiety Scale for Prostate Cancer(mAX-PC)and the anxiety subscale of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression ***:Nearly 70%(44 of 67)of the original cohort of patients completed the supplementary CAm *** mean age was 68 *** percent of respondents reported engaging in a rel-evant health behavior,and 64%reported doing so in direct response to their PCa ***,the most prevalent specific behaviors were exercising(56%),making dietary changes(50%),taking calcium supplements(41%),and taking vitamin D supplements(39%).Elevated baseline PCa-specific anxiety(mAX-PC score>16)after biochemical cancer recurrence was associated with use of any CAm(P=0.01),use of herbs/supplements(P=0.01),and dietary changes(P=0.04).Conclusion:PCa patients commonly use CAm,dietary changes,and exercise in response to their diagnosis,and these changes are associated with elevated general and PCa-specific anxiety.
