modeling the Impact of Land-Use Change on Water Budget of Gaza Strip

Gaza has a water crisis and faces serious challenges for the future sustainability of its water resources. Land-use change has an expected effect on water budget of the Gaza Strip. Three different land cover scenarios;the and cover of 2007, land cover of 2020, and full urbanization land cover were simulated independently using The Automated Geospatial Watershed Assessment (AGWA) tool which work under the umbrella of GIS. In general, the simulation results indicate that land-cover changes will significantly alter the hydrologic response of Gaza region. Percolation is expected to decrease in all options as urban areas are expanded where as the simulated surface runoff reflected a relative departure from the first scenario comparing with other scenarios. In the baseline scenario (2007), the simulated surface runoff and percolation represent 12% and 41% respectively from the water budget components of the Gaza Strip. In year 2020, these values were expected by the simulation results to be 20% and 27% respectively. A unique linear relationship between the relative change in urban area and the corresponding relative change in surface water has been investigated from the simulation results. The analysis of the three urbanization scenarios can give decision makers better understand for the future situation and assist them to advance towards achieving sustainable development planning for water resources system in the Gaza Strip.

many lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were isolated from “Shermout”, a popular Sudanese fermented beef product intended for long storage. An isolate that demonstrated significant antibacterial activity was identified as Lactobacillus plantarum Pm4 based on phenotypic, physiological and biochemical characteristics and carbohydrate utilization patterns. The inhibitory activity of the partially purified bacteriocin was completely arrested by the proteolytic enzymes proteinase-k and pepsin but not by α-amylase, asserting its proteinaceous nature. The activity was not due to h2O2 as similar inhibition was obtained by cell-free supernatant (CFS) produced under anaerobic conditions. The bacteriocin showed a molecular weight in the range of 3 - 5 kDa and had a bactericidal mode of action. No significant reduction in activity was observed on heating to 60℃ for 60 min, but activity was lost on heating to 100℃ or autoclaving. highest inhibitory activity was at ph 5.5 and there was appreciable reduction in activity at ph 3, 7 or 9. There was no drop in activity at –80℃ or –20℃ up to four weeks of storage. however, at 4℃ and 35℃, a gradual decline in activity was observed. Lb. plantarum Pm4 exhibited bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli ATCC25922, klebsiella pneumoniae and Proteus vulgaris. Bacteriocin production generally coincided with the phase of maximum growth and the best combination for maximum production of inhibitory activity was at ph 5.5 for 48 h whether incubated at 25℃, 30℃ or 37℃. Lb. plantarum Pm4 showed promise as a starter culture in the fermentation of preserved meat products.

Nano-composite, perovskite Ba(1- x - y)Sr(x)TiFe(y)O3, denoted as (BSTFe) in powder form was derived via sol-gel (SG) method followed by sintering at fixed temperature 750℃ for one hour. The chemical composition, morphology and structure of the powder samples were investigated by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEm) and scanning electron microscope (SEm). The XRD characterization indicates formation of a cubic crystalline phase in the pure BST. A well defined perovskite phase with nano-crystallite sizes equal to about 34 nm was achieved from XRD for B10ST3F sample, while TEm study confirmed the obtained XRD results giving the following crystallite size value about 33.75 nm for the same sample. The dielectric A.C. conductivity was evaluated as a function of temperature and frequency ranging from 42 hz up to 1 mhz.

Transverse Impact Response Analysis of Graphene Panels: Impact Limits

Explicit numerical studies were conducted to determine the transverse impact response of graphene panels. Although the mechanical properties of graphene are well documented in both quasi-static and dynamic conditions via nano- and microscopic studies, the impact behaviour of the material at the macroscale has not yet been studied and would provide interesting and crucial insight in to the performance of the material on a more widely recognizable scale. Firstly, a numerical impact model was validated against an analytical impact model based on continuum mechanics which showed good correlation between contact-force histories. The performance of graphene panels subjected to impact was compared to the performance of panels composed of aerospace-grade aluminium and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite. The graphene panel was found to exhibit lower specific energy than aluminium and CFRP at the low-energy range due to its inherently superior stiffness and intrinsic strength. On the other hand, the ballistic limit of 3 mm thick graphene panels was found to be 3375 m/s, resulting in an impact resistance 100 times greater than for aluminium or CFRP, making graphene the most suitable material for high-velocity impact protection.

Insulin resistance(IR)is associated with several metabolic disorders,including type 2 diabetes(T2D).The development of IR in insulin target tissues involves genetic and acquired *** at genetic risk for T2D tend to develop IR several years before glucose *** rodent models for both IR and T2D are being used to study the disease pathogenesis;however,these models cannot recapitulate all the aspects of this complex disorder as seen in each *** pluripotent stem cells(hPSCs)can overcome the hurdles faced with the classical mouse models for studying *** induced pluripotent stem cells(hiPSCs)can be generated from the somatic cells of the patients without the need to destroy a human ***,patient-specific hiPSCs can generate cells genetically identical to IR individuals,which can help in distinguishing between genetic and acquired defects in insulin *** the technologies of genome editing and hiPSCs may provide important information about the genetic factors underlying the development of different forms of *** studies are required to fill the gaps in understanding the pathogenesis of IR and *** this review,we summarize the factors involved in the development of IR in the insulin-target tissues leading to ***,we highlight the use of hPSCs to understand the mechanisms underlying the development of IR.

The acute abdomen is one of the most frequent causes for presentation to the emergency department. Imaging plays an important role for an accurate diagnosis, which in turn diminishes morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to demonstrate optimum CT aspects and emphasize on the important features of CT for those patients presenting with an acute abdominal pain at the Emergency Department both in general and in a number of selected conditions (appendicitis, small-bowel obstruction, acute pancreatitis, and diverticulitis). The reported data by this study are based on the author working experience, which forms a continuous protocol adjustment process. The present study provides evidence that CT would result in definite diagnosis of patients with abdominal pain in terms of the detection of some urgent conditions.

The Influence of Tropical Cyclones to the Plant Productivity Indices along the Coast of Tanzania

The study investigated the influence of Tropical cyclone (TCs) to the plant productivity indices along the coast of Tanzania using both field observations and change detection methods. These indices are normally designed to maximize the sensitivity of the vegetation characteristics and are very crucial in monitoring droughts intensity, yield and biomass amongst others. The study used three types of satellite imageries including the 16 days moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (mODIS) of 250 × 250 m resolution;8 days Landsat 7 enhanced thematic mapper (ETM) with resolution of 30 × 30 m composites, and 5 Landsat 8 (LC8) images, to determine the patterns and the variability of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) and TCs impacts on vegetation. Moreover, we used Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) data and the daily to monthly rainfall data from Tanzanian meteorological Authority (TmA). The change detection between the pre and post storm (TCs) conditions was used to analyse inter annual variability of EVI over Chwaka, Rufiji and Pugu— kazimzumbwi. The changes in NDVI and EVI and monthly rainfall at the coastal stations were calculated, plotted and analyzed. The results revealed that, highest EVI values over coastal Tanzania were observed during march and April, and minimum (low) values in November. The results for EVI changes based on pre and post storm conditions revealed that most observed stations and most TCs led to significant EVI changes which ranged from -0.05 to 0.19, and -0.3 to 0.22, for MODIS and L7 ETM data, respectively. As for the spatial changes in NDVI results revealed that, TCs (Besija and Fobane) were associated with positive NDVI changes i.e. (enhancement) of >0.51 and >0.31, and NDVI reduction (i.e. negative

Association of human herpesvirus 6 and 8 in Relapsing Remitting multiple Sclerosis Type during Exacerbation

multiple Sclerosis (mS) is a chronic demyelinating disease of the CNS with assumed autoimmune etiology. human herpes viruses have probable effects on relapsing-remitting mS pathogenesis presumably through molecular mimicry and/or bystander mechanisms. In this study we probed the possible contribution of the two herpes viruses, human herpesvirus 6 (hhV-6) and human herpesvirus 8 (hhV-8), in clinically definite multiple sclerosis (CDmS) pa-tients-relapsing remitting type (RRmS) during clinical exacerbations. All patients had no history of immune modulating or suppressing drugs intake in the last 6 months. The peripheral blood samples, from CDmS patients (n = 20) (13F/7m, age (y) = 30.3 ± 3.21) and other immune mediated neurological disorders (OIND) (11F/9m, age = 25.2 ± 12.1), (my-asthenia Gravis, Guillain Barré Syndrome, ischemic stroke in adolescent and young adult with no clear risk factors), as a control group, had been enrolled within 15 months (January-2007-- march -2008). We investigated the existence of specific deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sequences belonging to hhV-6 and hhV-8, using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in the isolated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBmCs) and in plasma. PCR demonstrated hhV-6 DNA in 7 cases (35%), hhV-8 sequences in only one cases (5%) in PBmCs from 20 relapsed CDmS patients;all hhV-6 posi-tive cases showed positive plasma results, while the blood samples from 20 OIND patients showed negative results ex-cept one case (5%) out of 9 cases of GBS was positive for hhV-8 in PBmCs. We consequently concluded that there is considerable evidence in this study that proposed the roles of hhV-6 and hhV-8 in mS pathogenesis and clinical ex-acerbation.
