Profile of SARS-CoV-2 infected Patients Hospitalized at the Epidemic Treatment Center (ETC) in Saint-Louis, Senegal during the First Two Waves

introduction: The SARS-CoV-2 infection is a major public health emergency. Several risk factors are involved in the occurrence of respiratory distress that can lead to death despite resuscitation measures. Objectives: The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiological, clinical, paraclinical, therapeutic, and evolution profile of patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 hospitalized at the CTE of Saint-Louis (Senegal) during the first two waves. Patients and methods: We conducted a retrospective, cross-sectional, descriptive, and analytical study that included all patients hospitalized at the ETC of Saint-Louis (Senegal) with SARS-CoV-2 infection from march 2020 to April 2021. Results: A total of 358 cases were collected, 256 (71.5%) during the first wave and 102 (28.5%) during the second wave. The mean age was 49.5 years (19.5). There was a male predominance (58.4%), with a sex ratio of 1.4. Hypertension was the main comorbidity, with 87 cases (24.3%). The most common functional signs were cough in 194 cases (54.2%), dyspnea in 143 cases (40%) and ageusia in 134 cases (37.4%). Thoracic CT scans were performed on 20 patients (5.6%), with severe involvement (50% - 75%) observed in 50% of cases. Hydroxychloroquine-azithromycin was prescribed to 351 patients (98%). Overall, 338 (94.4%) recovered and 17 (4.7%) died. in multivariate analysis, factors associated with death were male sex [OR = 2.645;95% Ci: 1.530 - 4.785;p = 0.011], age 60 years [OR = 1.039;95% Ci: 0.564 - 1.914;p = 0.002], the presence of comorbidities [OR = 2.171;95% Ci: 0.564 - 3.429;p = 0.033], SpO2 (ambient air) 95% [OR = 2.061;95% Ci: 0.616 - 3.827;p = 0.03], acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) [OR = 0.635;95% Ci: 0.316 - 1.275;p = 0.001], severe form [OR = 1.664;95% Ci: 0.298 - 2.478;p = 0.016], occurrence of complications [OR = 0.521;95% Ci: 0.287 - 0.944;p = 0.032], high creatinine levels [OR = 2.061;95% Ci: 1.616 - 3.827;p = 0.026], and lymphopenia [OR = 0.485;95% Ci: 0.370 - 0.636;p = 0.0

COViD-19/Tuberculosis Co-infection at the Epidemic Treatment Center (ETC) of Saint-Louis (Senegal): About 9 Cases

introduction: COViD-19 is a global public health emergency that can cause acute respiratory distress syndrome. in countries where tuberculosis (TB) is endemic, coinfection of COViD-19 and TB is often encountered, which increases the risk of developing severe forms of COViD-19. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of COViD-19/TB coinfection at the Epidemic treatment center (ETC) in Saint-Louis (Senegal) and to describe the epidemiological, clinical, paraclinical, and outcome profile of co-infected patients. Patients and methods: This is a retrospective, cross-sectional, descriptive cohort study based on the records of COViD-19/ TB co-infected patients who were hospitalized at the ETC in Saint-Louis (Senegal) over an 18-month period from march 2020 to September 2021. Results: Out of a total of 454 hospitalizations, we collected records of 9 patients co-infected with COViD-19/TB, resulting in a prevalence of 2%. The study included patients with a median age of 34 years (range: 10-86 years), with a male predominance (7 cases) and a sex ratio of 3.5. The majority of patients (88.9%) had severe forms of COViD-19. Dyspnea and cough were reported in all patients (100%). Pulmonary TB was the most frequent localization, with 9 cases. The diagnosis of COViD-19 was confirmed by nasopharyngeal PCR in all patients (100%). Bacilloscopy was positive in 3 out of 5 cases. One patient tested positive for GeneXpert? mTB/RiF without rifampicin resistance. All patients were prescribed the hydroxychloroquine-azithromycin combination and anti-tuberculosis treatment. Out of the nine patients, four recovered (44.4%) and five died (55.5%). Conclusion: COViD-19/TB coinfection had a low prevalence in our cohort, but was associated with a high mortality due to the frequent occurrence of severe forms of the disease.

introduction: Acute otitis media is an acute inflammation of the mucosa of the middle ear cavities. it is often secondary to nasopharyngitis, which favors the passage of infection through the Eustachian tube to the middle ear. The aim of our study was to improve the management of AOm in the Paediatric Department of the Hospital National ignace Deen (Conakry). Patients and methods: This was a prospective descriptive study lasting 6 months from 01 July to 31 December 2011;the study covered 525 cases out of a total of 6276 children, i.e. a frequency of 8.36%. Results: The most affected age group was 6 to 11 months. males predominated (69.71%). 82.29% had a history of recurrent rhinopharyngitis. The most frequent reason for consultation was incessant crying (66.29%). Rhinopharyngitis and malaria were the most commonly associated pathologies (87.62% and 39.62% respectively). 72.19% of our patients were admitted with congestive AOm and received medical treatment. We recorded one case of otomastoiditis which was treated surgically. Conclusion: AOm is more common in children aged between 6 and 24 months. Good collaboration between paediatricians and ENT specialists is essential to reduce the morbidity of AOm.

Crystal structure and luminescence dynamics of highly pure Lim(PO_(3))_(3):Eu^(3+)(m=Sr,Ca) red phosphors for white light emitting diodes

Highly pure red phosphors Lim(PO_(3))_(3):Eu^(3+)(m=Sr,Ca) doped with Eu^(3+)(1 mol%) were synthesized via solution combustion method and their crystal structure and luminescence dynamics were studied to explore its suitability in white light emitting *** Rietveld refinement analysis of the powder Xray diffraction patterns reveals that the phosphors belong to the pure triclinic phase of LiSr(PO_(3))_(3) and LiCa(PO_(3)) with space group P-1(2).The scanning electron microscopy images showed the agglomerated *** photoluminescence emission spectra under 393 nm show an orange band at 594 nm and a red band at 613 nm ascribed to ^(5)D_(0)→^(7)F_(1).^(5)D_(0)→^(7)F_(2) transitions of Eu^(3+)ion in both the ***,the spectroscopic properties such as luminescence behaviour,and Stark splitting were used to examine the symmetry of Eu^(3+)ions in Lim(PO_(3))_(3):Es^(3+)(m=Sr,Ca) phosphors in terms of distortion induced upon *** Stark splitting shows that the actual site symmetry for Eu^(3+)ion was estimated to be D_(2) type for both *** photometric properties of LiCa(PO_(3))_(3):Eu^(3+)such as Commission international de l'Eclairage coordinates(x=0.64,y=0.36) near to the standard one(red),high color purity(95%) and higher brightness reveal that the phosphor has the capability of acting as a red component in n-UV white light emitting diodes.

Energy efficiency in a water supply system:Energy consumption and CO_2 emission

This paper presents important fundamentals associated with water and energy efficiency and highlights the importance of using renewable energy sources. A model of multi-criteria optimization for energy efficiency based on water and environmental management policies, including the preservation of water resources and the control of water pressure and energy consumption through a hybrid energy solution, was developed and applied to a water supply system. The methodology developed includes three solutions：（1） the use of a water turbine in pipe systems where pressures are higher than necessary and pressure-reducing valves are installed, （2） the optimization of pumping operation according to the electricity tariff and water demand, and （3） the use of other renewable energy sources, including a wind turbine, to supply energy to the pumping station, with the remaining energy being sold to the national electric grid. The use of an integrated solution （water and energy-） proves to be a valuable input for creating benefits from available hydro energy in the water supply system in order to produce clean power, and the use of a wind source allows for the reduction of energy consumption in pumping stations, as well as of the CO2 emission to the atmosphere.

Defining Velocity and Acceleration Ranges for Time-motion Analysis from a 7-Sided Game in U11 Soccer Players Using Global Positioning System Devices:A Case Study

The aims of this study were(1)to define speed and acceleration thresholds from youth match activity of soccer players and(2)to analyze the activity performed by young soccer players during a match using GPS devices and according to these *** U11 soccer players from a professional club participated in a 7-sided match being equipped with global positioning system(GPS)devices(sampling frequency 5 Hz)to measure the speed of each *** Kernel Density Esti-mate(KDE)was used to observe the occurrences of *** range of velocities was described by a distribution curve,from which the speed and acceleration thresholds for each category of movement were defined and time–motion analysis of the match was *** model with 4 Gaussian laws was the best when using the Akaike information Criterion(AiC).in this study,the thresholds defined for each category of movement were:standing(m/h),walking(0.1–5.6 km/h),slow running(5.7–7.7 km/h),fast running(7.8–12.7 km/h)and sprint(≥12.8 km/h).Acceleration thresholds were calculated to define movement considered as a sprint for each category of movement:standing(0.3 m/s^(2)),walking(0.66 m/s^(2)),slow running(1.01 m/s^(2))or fast running(0.97 m/s^(2)).All the acceleration thresholds were significantly different from each other(Pith large effect sizes,excepting the comparison between slow and fast running(P=0.41)with a small effect *** U-11 soccer players,time–motion analysis may be performed according to five categories of *** study has also defined sprint and acceleration thresholds for this category of age.

Naturally Nitrogen-Doped Biochar made from End-of-Life Wood Panels for SO_(2) Gas Depollution

Reconstituted wood panels have several advantages in terms of ease of manufacturing,but their shorter life span results in a huge amount of reconstituted wood panels being discarded in sorting centers ***,the most common approach for dealing with this waste is *** this study,reconstituted wood panels were converted into activated biochar through a two-step thermochemical process:(i)biochar production using pilot scale fast pyrolysis at 250 kg/h and 450℃;and(ii)a physical activation at three temperatures(750℃,850℃ and 950℃)using an in-house activation furnace(1 kg/h).Results showed that the first stage removed about 66% of the nitrogen from the wood panels in the form of NO,NH3,and trimethylamine,which were detected in small amounts compared to emitted CO_(2).Compared to other types of thermochemical conversion methods(e.g.,slow pyrolysis),isocyanic acid and hydrogen cyanide were not detected in this *** second stage produced activated biochar with a specific surface area of up to 865 m^(2)/g at 950℃.The volatile gases generated during activation were predominantly composed of toluene and *** two-step process resulted in nitrogen-rich carbon in the form of pyrrolic and pyridinic *** biochars were then evaluated for their SO_(2) retention performance and showed an excellent adsorption capacity of up to 2140 mg/g compared to 65 mg/g for a commercial activated carbon(889 m^(2)/g).End-of-life reconstituted wood panels and SO_(2) gas are problematic issues in Canada where the economy largely revolves around forestry and mining industries.

in our center where a lot of water is used for watering and cleaning the classrooms, the management of wastewater as a resource can be a real opportunity. The main objective of this research is to size and determine the effectiveness of natural treatments of the wastewater treatment system composed of a septic tank and a treatment plant which would be installed in site Ngoundiane of Alioune DiOP University, in Bambey, Senegal. Overall, we noted that the sized septic tank dimensioned in our study allows the efficient settling of wastewater which depends on the flow point ratio and useful settling surface area that must be lower than the upward speed that corresponds to 0.8 m/h. The sizing of the septic tank led us to obtain a useful capacity of 88 m3 and a horizontal surface of 44 m2 with a height of 2 m. The ratio between the flow of the wastewater received and the upward speed is 0.17 m/h and is significantly lower than the recommended speed. in addition, the station will be able to eliminate 80.418% of the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), 75.522% of the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), 92.385% of Suspended Solid (SS) and 43.427% of Nitrogen compounds.

Linear and Nonlinear Stokes Waves Theory: Numerical Hydrodynamic and Energy Studies

The increase of wave energy in electricity production is an objective shared by many countries to meet growing demand and global warming. To analyze devices capable of converting the energy of sea waves into electrical energy, it is important to master the various theories of gravity waves and generation. We will in our work consider a numerical waves tank for an amplitude A=0.5, a wavelength λ=0.25 , an average height He=10 and a Froude number fixed at 1 × 105. Numerical wave channel analysis is used to reproduce the natural phenomenon of wave propagation in an experimental model. Wave makers are usually used to generate waves in the channel. in theory, the influence of an incident wave can be considered, as in the case of our study. in this study, the evolution of the hydrodynamic parameters and the energy transported in one wavelength can be determined by calculation. A change of variable will be done in this work to facilitate the writing of the boundary conditions at the free surface and at the bottom. The nonlinear Stokes theory will be studied in this case in order to provide hydrodynamic solutions through the Navier-Stokes equations to finally deduce the energetic results. To do this, the finite difference method will be used for the hydrodynamic results such as the velocity potential and the free surface elevation and the trapezium method of Newton for the energetic results. Thus, we will determine the energetic potential according to the decrease in the slope of the tank. To do this, we will take as values of beta representing the inverse of the slope of the tank, β=100, β=105, β=110 and β=105. .

Subacute Hyperthyroidism induced by Treatment with Lithium Salts

Lithium treatment is usually indicated in bipolar disorder. it is associated with hypothyroidism and very rarely with hyperthyroidism. We report here the results of the exploration of a case of thyrotoxicosis occurring during treatment with lithium salts. This was a 16-year-old patient with ongoing lithium treatment for two and a half years who presented with a thyrotoxicosis syndrome without a context of iodine overload or an episode of anterior cervical pain that could suggest subacute thyroiditis or orthopathic sign. The assessment of the exploration of this patient reveals biological hyperthyroidism without anti-TSH receptor antibodies, a normal ultrasound, and white scintigraphy which makes it possible to evoke the diagnosis of subacute thyroiditis (absence of the context of iodine overload). Note the interest in a thyroid assessment before and during treatment with lithium salts. moreover, scintigraphy occupies a place of choice in the exploration of hyperthyroidism, particularly in the context of normal thyroid ultrasound imaging.
