Green macroalgae,e.g.,Ulva lactuca,are valuable bioactive sources of nutrients;but algae recalcitrant cell walls,composed of a complex cross-linked matrix of polysaccharides,can compromise their utilization as feedstuffs for monogastric *** study aimed to evaluate the ability of pre-selected Carbohydrate-Active enZymes(CAZymes)and sulfatases to degrade *** cell walls and release nutritive compounds.A databank of 199 recombinant CAZymes and sulfatases was tested in vitro for their action towards *** cell wall *** enzymes were incubated with the macroalga,either alone or in combination,to release reducing sugars and decrease fluorescence intensity of Calcofluor White stained cell *** individual action of a polysaccharide lyase family 25(PL25),an ulvan lyase,was shown to be the most efficient in cell wall *** ulvan lyase treatment,in triplicate measures,promoted the release of 4.54 g/L(Pmono-and oligosaccharides release of 11.4 and 11.2 mmol/100 g of dried alga(Pmparison to *** ability of ulvan lyase treatment to promote the release of nutritional compounds from alga biomass was also evaluated.A release of some monounsaturated fatty acids was observed,particularly the health beneficial 18:1c9(P0.05),proteins(P?0.861)or pigments(P>0.05)was *** results highlight the capacity of a single recombinant ulvan lyase(PL25 family)to incompletely disrupt *** cell *** enzyme could enhance the bioaccessibility of *** bioactive products with promising utilization in the feed industry.

The continuous excavation of burrows by fiddler crabs generates bioturbation in the sediment,which can be estimated from burrow *** aim of the present study was to describe the burrow morphology of Uca uruguayensis and *** and its relationship with demography of resident individuals and to estimate the level of bioturbation in the sediment generated by each *** all individuals from each of the 2 species,sex was determined and the carapace width(CW;mm)*** were characterized according to burrow diameter(BD;mm),maximum burrow depth(mBD;mm)and burrow volume(BV;cm^(3)).The density of each species in the study area was also *** both species,the males were larger and occupied burrows with higher BV compared to *** between sexes in relation to the burrow characteristics might reflect sexual dimorphism within the group and are probably related to the fact that males use the burrows for *** and BV showed significant positive relationships with the size of resident *** amount of sediment removed per burrow was estimated from mean BV:10.78 cm^(3)of sediment/burrow for *** and 12.38 cm^(3)of sediment/burrow for *** the density and depth differences between the 2 species,the similarity in burrow volume suggests that *** and *** present the same importance in terms of the bioturbation *** morphology is highly associated with characteristics of the occupant,although extrinsic factors should also be considered,and its description can provide estimates on the bioturbation generated by Uca species in mangrove forests.

The combination of flow elasticity and inertia has emerged as a viable tool for focusing and manipulating particles using *** there is considerable interest in the field of elasto-inertial microfluidics owing to its potential applications,research on particle focusing has been mostly limited to low Reynolds numbers(Remigration toward equilibrium positions has not been extensively *** this work,we thoroughly studied particle focusing on the dynamic range of flow rates and particle migration using straight microchannels with a single inlet high aspect *** initially explored several parameters that had an impact on particle focusing,such as the particle size,channel dimensions,concentration of viscoelastic fluid,and flow *** experimental work covered a wide range of dimensionless numbers(0.05mbermbermberm *** results showed that the particle size played a dominant role,and by tuning the parameters,particle focusing could be achieved at Reynolds numbers ranging from 0.2(1μL/min)to 85(250μL/min).Furthermore,we numerically and experimentally studied particle migration and reported differential particle migration for high-resolution separations of 5μm,7μm and 10μm particles in a sheathless flow at a throughput of 150μL/*** work elucidates the complex particle transport in elasto-inertial flows and has great potential for the development of high-throughput and high-resolution particle separation for biomedical and environmental applications.

Complexed amino acid minerals ***-glycinate chelated minerals:Impact on the performance of old laying hens

The present study was to evaluate the effect of trace minerals(Zn,mn,and Cu)from complexed amino acid minerals(ZmCAA)and bis-glycinate chelated minerals(ZmCGly)in laying hen diets on performance,internal and external egg quality,yolk mineral deposition,intestinal morphometry,and bone *** 78 to 98 weeks of age,400 White LSL-Lite strain laying hens were distributed in a randomized design with 4 treatments with 10 replicates per *** were distributed in a 2×2 factorial arrangement using either Zn,mn,and Cu of ZmCAA or ZmCGly source at 2 levels:low(20,20,and 3.5 mg/kg of Zn,mn,and Cu,respectively)or high(40,40,and 7 mg/kg of Zn,mn,and Cu,respectively).The analysis of variance was performed,and in cases where differences were observed,the means were compared using Tukey?s test(Pmineral supplementation had a significant impact on the performance of laying *** fed ZmCAA had higher egg production(P=0.01),egg weight(P=0.02),egg mass(P=0.01),and lower feed conversion ratio(P=0.05)compared to those fed *** ZmCAA supplementation showed higher albumen height(P=0.01),albumen weight(P=0.01),and eggshell thickness(Pmn(Pmetry(PmCAA *** the small intestine,ZmCAA resulted in longer villi(P=0.02)and shorter crypt depth(P=0.01)in the *** and ileum measurements were influenced by the level and source of trace minerals(PmCAA exhibited superior performance,egg quality,deposition of trace minerals in the egg yolk,and bone density compared to hens fed *** this study,older laying hens supplemented with ZmCAA at lower levels demonstrated adequate levels of supplementation.

Different no-till grain production systems with Urochloa *** soil microbial community structure,biomass and activity in a tropical Ultisol

Integrated grain cropping systems promote soil health(SH)and *** biomass and activity(mBA)and community structure(mCS)are key to *** of maize with Urochloa pastures strongly impacts mBA and *** is more sensitive than mCS to shifts in grain cropping *** under continuous Urochloa increased microbial activity and AmF *** soils are prone to *** of conservation agricultural practices is essential to improve soil health,which is influenced by soil *** this study we analyzed shifts in microbial biomass and activity(mBA)and microbial community structure(mCS)based on fatty acid methyl esthers(FAmEs)between five no-till agricultural practices:maize monoculture(mm);maize annualy intercropped with Urochloa decumbens(m/Ud);m/Ud with soybean rotation every other year(m/Ud-S);m/Ud keeping the pasture for the next two years(m/Ud-Ud-Ud);and maize intercropped with *** keeping the pasture for the next two years(m/Ur-Ur-Ur).Results indicated that mBA was affected by the inclusion of Urochloa intercropping and by rotation with *** under a longer residence time with Urochloa in the field had higherβ-glucosidase activity and soil basal respiration,indicating a greater microbial *** was less affected than mBA by the investigated cropping *** changed only in the continuous pasture systems,which were enriched in arbuscular mycorrhyzal fungi(AmF).Additionally,the continuous pasture systems had lower microbial stress ratios than the other agricultural *** sum,our study showed that utilization of Urochloa *** longer periods in no-till agricultural practices contributes to increase microbial activity,AmF abundance and decrease microbial stress *** changes are primarily beneficial for soil health.

Feasibility of performing the 3-minute step test with remote supervision in children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis: A comparative study

Importance:The 3-min step test is a simple option to monitor submaximal exercise capacity,although its use via remote video monitoring has not been investigated in children with cystic fibrosis(CF).Objective:This study aimed to assess the feasibility and reproducibility of performing the 3-min step test with remote ***:A cross-sectional study including CF patients(6-18 years)from two CF services were ***,anthropometric,clinical,and lung function data were collected and two 3-min step tests were performed:(i)in-person supervision,and(ii)remotely supervised by video *** and after the tests,heart rate(HR),oxygen saturation(SpO2),and the Borg score for dyspnea and lower limb fatigue were ***:Twenty-three patients(10.7±3.7 years)with a mean FEV1 of 89.5%±23.2%were *** were no significant differences between tests,with mean differences(95%confidence intervals)in final HR of-3.3(-8.9,2.4),change in HR of-1.9(-6.1,2.1),final SpO2 of 0.3(-0.4,1.0),and final dyspnea of 0.1(-0.8,0.9).The intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.852(final HR),0.762(final SpO2),and 0.775(final lower limb fatigue).Significant and moderate correlations were found between tests for final HR(r=0.75),change in HR(r=0.61),and final SpO2(r=0.61).The Bland-Altman analysis showed a mean difference in final SpO2 between tests of 0.3%(limit of agreement-3.0%,3.5%).Interpretation:Physiological responses between tests were similar,indicating it was feasible to perform the 3-min step test with remote supervision in CF children.

Energy valorization of organic waste material is nowadays an assessed practice of circular *** heat and power(CHP)technologies based on biomass gasification represent viable substitutes to traditional energy conversion units based on combustion,whose need has recently experienced a huge growth,due to the increasing concerns about the release of greenhouse gases(GHGs)emissions and the related effects on climate *** present,only a few solutions have yet achieved a level of full development for *** of them is the system developed by CmD,the CmD ECO20,made of a gasifier,a syngas cleaning system and a spark ignition internal combustion engine working as a *** the present work,a numerical model is developed to study this system into detail and search for optimal controlling *** simulation relies on a combined use of the Thermoflex?environment and a proper one-dimensional(1D)model of the engine module built within GT-Suite?.An original contribution is given to the turbulent combustion model that accounts for the laminar flame speed of the specific *** numerical model,that covers the entire biomass-to-energy conversion process,is validated under real operative *** final purpose of the work is the optimization of input parameters,as the initial biomass moisture content,the equivalence ratio at the gasifier or the timing of spark advance,to maximize the system electrical energy output.
