The disability,mortality and costs due to ionizing radiation(IR)-induced osteoporotic bone fractures are sub-stantial and no effective therapy exists.Ionizing radiation increases cellular oxidative damage,causing an imbalance in bone turnover that is primarily driven via heightened activity of the bone-resorbing osteoclast.We demonstrate that rats exposed to sublethal levels of IR develop fragile,osteoporotic bone.At reactive surface sites,cerium ions have the ability to easily undergo redox cycling:drastically adjusting their electronic con-figurations and versatile catalytic activities.These properties make cerium oxide nanomaterials fascinating.We show that an engineered artificial nanozyme composed of cerium oxide,and designed to possess a higher fraction of trivalent(Ce^(3+))surface sites,mitigates the IR-induced loss in bone area,bone architecture,and strength.These investigations also demonstrate that our nanozyme furnishes several mechanistic avenues of protection and selectively targets highly damaging reactive oxygen species,protecting the rats against IR-induced DNA damage,cellular senescence,and elevated osteoclastic activity in vitro and in vivo.Further,we reveal that our nanozyme is a previously unreported key regulator of osteoclast formation derived from macrophages while also directly targeting bone progenitor cells,favoring new bone formation despite its exposure to harmful levels of IR in vitro.These findings open a new approach for the specific prevention of IR-induced bone loss using synthesis-mediated designer multifunctional nanomaterials.

This paper lays out a hierarchical,appropriate-complexity framework for conceptualizing movement-path segments at different spatiotemporal scales in a way that facilitates comparative analyses and bridges behavior and mathematical concepts.It then outlines a process for generating a multimode,multiscale stochastic simulation model that can be used to test animal movement hypotheses and make predictions of movement responses to management and global change.many methods for analyzing movement data begin by generating step-length(SL)and turning-angle(ta)distributions from relocation time-series data,some of which are linked to ecological,landscape,and environmental covariates.The frequency at which these data are collected may vary from sub-seconds to several hours.The kinds of questions that may be asked of these data,however,are very much scale dependent.The hierarchical path-segmentation(HPS)framework presented here clarifies how the scale at which SL and ta data are collected relates to other sub-and super-diel scales.Difficulties arise because the information contained in SL and ta time series are often not directly relatable to the physiological,ecological,and sociological factors that drive the structure of movement paths at longer scales.These difficulties are overcome by anchoring the classification of movement types around the concept of fixed-period(24 h)diel activity routines and providing a bridge between behavioral/ecological and stochastic-walk concepts(means,variances,correlations,individual-state and local environmental covariates).This bridge is achieved through the generation of relatively short segments conceived as characteristic sequences of fundamental movement elements.These short segments are then used to characterize longer canonical-activity-mode segments that emerge through movement at behaviorally relevant sub-diel scales.HPS thus provides a novel system for integrating sub-minute movement sequences into canonical activity modes(cams)that,in turn,can be strung together into various types

The integrated effect of irrigation and agricultural practices on soil salinity in the Jordan Valley (JV), where over 60% of Jordan's agricultural produce is grown, was investigated in this study during 2009-2010. Due to the differences in agricultural operations, cropping patterns, irrigation management, and weather conditions, 206 top- and sub-soil samples were taken every 1 to 3 km from representative farms along a north-south (N-S) transect with 1 to 2 km lateral extents. Soil electrical conductivity of saturated extract (EC_(se)), ca, mg, K, Na, Cl, and Na adsorption ratio (SAR) were determined in saturated paste extracts. Results indicated that about 63% of soils in the JV are indeed saline, out of which almost 46% are moderately to strongly saline. Along the N-S transect of the JV, EC_(se) increased from 4.5 to 14.1 dS m^(-1) in top-soil samples. Similar increase was observed for the sub-soil samples. The major chemical components of soil salinity; i.e., ca, mg, and Cl, also showed a similar increase along the N-S transect of the valley. moreover, compared to previous field sampling, results showed that changes in soil salinity in the JV were dramatic. In addition, it was found that Cl imposed an existing and potential threat to sensitive crops in 60% of the soils in the JV, where Cl concentrations were greater than 710 mg L^(-1). Under the prevalent arid mediterranean conditions, improving the management of irrigation water, crops, and nutrient inputs and increasing water and fertilizer use efficiencies should be indispensable to conserve and sustain the already fragile agricultural soils in the JV.

The results of experiments on measuring the energy spectra of alpha particles in reactions with heavy ions are presented.The measurements were performed using the high-resolution magnetic analyzer mAVR with beams of ^(48)ca(280 meV)and ^(56)Fe(320 and 400 meV)on ^(181)ta and ^(238)U targets at an angle of 0°.A strong dependence of the double differential cross sections for production of alpha particles on the atomic number of the target nucleus was observed,which indicates that fast alpha particles are mainly emitted from the target nucleus;this conclusion was also confirmed by calculations within the time-dependent Schrödinger equation approach.An analysis of the obtained experimental data was carried out within the model of moving sources modified to consider the kinematic limits for two-body and three-body exit channels.

Stem cell therapy holds high promises in regenerative medicine.The major challenge of clinical translation is to precisely and quantitatively evaluate the in vivo cell distribution,migration,and engraftment,which cannot be easily achieved by current techniques.To address this issue,for the first time,we have developed a molecular cell tracker with a strong fluorescence signal in the second near-infrared(NIR-II)window(1,000-1,700 nm)for real-time monitoring of in vivo cell behaviors in both healthy and diseased animal models.The NIR-II tracker(CelTrac1000)has shown complete cell labeling with low cytotoxicity and profound long-term tracking ability for 30 days in high spatiotemporal resolution for semiquantification of the biodistribution of transplanted stem cells.taking advantage of the unique merits of CelTrac1000,the responses of transplanted stem cells to different diseased environments have been discriminated and unveiled.Furthermore,we also demonstrate CelTrac1000 as a universal and effective technique for ultrafast real-time tracking of the cellular migration and distribution in a 100μm single-cell cluster spatial resolution,along with the lung contraction and heart beating.As such,this NIR-II tracker will shift the optical cell tracking into a single-cell cluster and millisecond temporal resolution for better evaluating and understanding stem cell therapy,affording optimal doses and efficacy.

AIm To establish a permanent piwi like RNA-mediated genesilencing 1(PIWIL1) gene knockout in AGP01 gastric cancer cell line using CRISPR-cas9 system and analyze phenotypic modifications as well as gene expression alterations.mETHODS CRISPR-cas9 system used was purchased from Dharmacon GE Life Sciences(Lafayette, CO, United States) and permanent knockout was performed according to manufacturer's recommendations. Woundhealing assay was performed to investigate the effect of PIWIL1 knockout on migration capability of cells and Boyden chamber invasion assay was performed to investigate the effect on invasion capability. For the gene expression analysis, a one-color microarray-based gene expression analysis kit(Agilent Technologies, Santa Clara, ca, United States) was used according to the protocol provided by the manufacturer. RESULTS PIWIL1 gene knockout caused a significant decrease in AGP01 migration capacity as well as a significant decrease in cell invasiveness. moreover, functional analysis based on grouping of all differentially expressed m RNAs identified a total of 35 genes(5 up-regulated and 30 down-regulated) encoding proteins involved in cellular invasion and migration. According to current literature, 9 of these 35 genes(DOCK2, ZNF503, PDE4 D, ABL1, ABL2, LPAR1, SmAD2, WASF3 and DACH1) are possibly related to the mechanisms used by PIWIL1 to promote carcinogenic effects related to migration and invasion, since their functions are consistent with the changes observed(being up-or down-regulated after knockout). CONCLUSION taken together, these data reinforce the idea that PIWIL1 plays a crucial role in the signaling pathway of gastric cancer, regulating several genes involved in migration and invasion processes; therefore, its use as a therapeutic target may generate promising results in the treatment of gastric cancer.

Granitoids and orthogneisses(1.7 Ga)from the northern part of the Banded Gneissic Complex(BGC-II domain),Aravalli Craton(NW India)are geochemically analyzed to understand the geodynamic condition and crustal evolution processes.The samples are metaluminous to peraluminous(molar A/CNK:0.74±2.12),and characterized by Eu-anomaly ranging from 0.17 to 1.06,Fe_(2)O_(3)^(T)/(Fe_(2)O_(3)^(T)+mgO)from 0.8 to 0.9 and high magmatic zircon saturation temperature(>830°C)which are the features suggestive of A-type granite affinity.Tectonic discrimination diagrams classify the samples as post-collisional extensional A2-type granites.Geochemical characteristics along with trace element ratios[(Y/Nb)_(N)=0.15 to 4.33(avg.0.76),(Th/Nb)_(N)=4.63 to 255.47(avg.63.13),(Th/ta)_(N)=1.37 to 9.84(avg.8.86),(Ce/Pb)_(N)=0.05 to 3.05(avg.1.43)]indicate that the rocks were derived from a plagioclase-rich and garnet-free crustal source under lowpressure conditions.Further,it is also proposed that tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite(TTG)rocks which occur dominantly in southern Rajasthan(BGC-I)are precursors and their partial melting led to the generation of the studied A-type granite samples.The studied samples also bear close geochemical similarity with A-type granites of similar age(1.7 Ga)near the Sakhun-Ladera region of northern BGC-II.The studied A-type granites are believed to be coeval to similar aged A-type granites of the Khetri and Alwar sub-basins of the North Delhi Fold Belt(NDFB).They are comparable in age and magmatic history to recorded A-type magmatism in North America and parts of the Chinese craton.The large geographical extents of synchronous A-type granites are proposed to be related to the Columbia Supercontinent assembly(ca.1.7 Ga;postcollisional granites).Thus,based on the studied extensional granites,we surmise that BGC-II was part of the Columbia Supercontinent.

The Egyptian older and younger granitic rocks emplaced during pre-and post-collision stages of Neoproterozoic Pan-African orogeny,respectively,are widely distributed in the southern Sinai Peninsula,constituting 70% of the basement outcrops.The Wadi El-Akhder,southwestern Sinai,is a mountainous terrain exposing two granitoid suites,namely the Wadi El-Akhder Older Granites(AOG)and the Homra Younger Granites(HYG).The AOG(granodiorites with subordinate tonalite compositions)have geochemical characteristics of medium-K calc-alkaline,metaluminous to mildly peraluminous granitoids formed in an island-arc environment,which are conformable with well-known Egyptian older granitoids rocks,whereas the HYG display calc-alkaline to slightly alkaline nature,peraluminous syeno-,monzogranites and alkali feldspar granites matching well those of the Egyptian younger granites.With respect to the AOG granitoids,the HYG granites contain lower Al_(2)O_(3),Feo^(*),mgO,mnO,caO,TiO_(2),Sr,Ba,and V,but higher Na_(2)O,K_(2)O,Nb,Zr,Th,and Rb.The AOG are generally characterized by enrichment in LILE and LREE and depletion in HFSE relative to N-mORB values(e.g.,negative Nb and ta anomalies).The geochemical features of the AOG follow assimilation-fractional crystallization(AFC)trends indicative of extensive crustal contamination of magma derived from a mantle source.The chemical characteristics of the AOG are remarkably similar to those of subduction-related granitoids from the ArabianNubian Shield(ANS).The compositional variations from monzogranites through syenogranites to alkali feldspar granite within HYG could not be explained by fractional crystallization solely.Correlating the whole-rock composition of the HYG to melts generated by experimental dehydration melting of meta-sedimentary and magmatic rocks reveals that they appear to be derived by extended melting of psammitic and pelitic metasediments,which is similar to the most of younger granitic suites in the ANS.

Background:?Women undergoing mastectomy may have postural asymmetries due to mutilation, culminating in changes in postural balance. Aim:?This study aimed to evaluate the influence of the mastectomy in the postural control of women undergoing surgical treatment of breast cancer. methods: We evaluated 40 volunteers divided into two groups: women undergoing mastectomy (mG) with a mean age of 51.45 (SD 6.49) years old and mean BmI of 30.71 (SD 5.21) kg/m2, and a control group of women without the disease (CG) with a mean age of 50.50 (SD 7.85) years old and mean BmI of 30.50 (SD 5.77). Static balance was assessed using the displacement of the center of pressure (COP), with voluntary bipedal support with eyes open and closed on a force platform. Statistical analysis was performed using the software SPSS 21.0 with a significance level of 5%. Results: The mG showed an increase in the displacement area along the x-axis (P?= 0.003) and total displacement (P?eo), and an increase in the x-axis (P?= 0.002) and total displacement (P?tal velocity (P?eo than EC. A rise in velocity was also observed in the x- and y-axis, and in total velocity with EC, when compared with the CG (P?ment was higher for all variables in both groups with EC (P?mastectomy may significantly alter postural control in women with breast cancer.
