Benzene degradation in waste gas by photolysis and photolysis-ozonation： experiments and modeling

The degradation of benzene, a carcinogenic air pollutant, was studied in a gas-phase photochemical reactor with an amalgam lamp emitting ultraviolet light at 185 and 254 nm. Efficient benzene degradation （〉70%） was possible for benzene mass flow rates of up to 1.5 ***1. Adding ozone allowed benzene mass flow rates of up to 5 m ***-1 tobe treated with the same efficiency. In terms of energy consumption, ozone doubles the efficiency of the process. A comprenenslve mecnanisnc simulation model was developed incorporating a chemical kinetics model （62 reactions involving 47 chemical species）, a material balance model incorporating diffusion and flow, a flow velocity model,and a light field model. The model successfully predicted the efficiency of the reactor, generally within 20%, which indicates that the model is sound, and can be used for feasibility studies. The prediction of the reactor efficiency in the presence of ozone was less successful, with systematically overestimated efficiency. Condensation of reaction products in the reactor is thought to be the mare cause of model inaccuracy. Both experimental .data and model predictions show that there is a synergistic effect between ozonation and ultraviolet degradation.

Identification of Rab family genes and functional analyses of LmRab5 and LmRab11A in the development and RNA interference of Locusta migratoria

Rab proteins constitute the largest family of small GTPases,which play pivotal roles in intracellular membrane trafficking in all eukaryotes.A number of Rab genes have been identified in eukaryotes;however,very little information about these genes has been reported in *** the current study,for the first time we identified and characterized 27 Rab family genes from Locusta *** analysis and comparison of domain architecture indicated that Rab family genes are highly conserved among insect ***-dependent expression profiles indicated that expression of Rab genes was highest in the ovary,except for LmRab3,which was most highly expressed in *** biological function of each Rab gene was investigated using RNA interference(RNAi).Double-stranded RNA targeting each Rab gene was injected into the hemocoel of nymphs and revealed that suppression of two Rab genes(LmRab5 and LmRab11A)caused 100%*** addition,nymphs injected with dsLmRab5 exhibited severe phenotypic defects in the gastric caeca and midgut,while dsLmRab11A arrested the molting *** then applied the RNAi of RNAi technique to test if silencing either of these two genes would affect the suppression of the lethal giant larvae(LmLgl)reporter gene and found that suppression of LmRab5 diminished the RNAi efficiency of LmLgl,whereas suppression of LmRab11A enhanced RNAi efficiency of *** results indicate that Rab genes contribute differently to RNAi efficiency in different *** study provides a foundation for further functional investigations of Rab genes and their contributions to RNAi efficiency in ***.

A dsRNA-degrading nuclease(dsRNase2)limits RNAi efficiency in the Asian corn borer(Ostrinia furnacalis)

The efficiency of RNA interference(RNAi)varies substantially among different insect *** degradation of double-stranded RNA(dsRNA)by dsRNA-degrading nucleases(dsRNases)has been implicated to cause low RNAi efficiency in several insect *** this study,we identified four dsRNase genes(OfdsRNaseL Ofd-sRNase2,OfdsRNase3 and OfdsRNase4)from the Asian corn borer(Ostrinia furnacalis)transcriptome *** analyses showed that each deduced protein sequence contained endonuclease NS domains and signal *** expression analysis revealed that OfdsRNase2 was exclusively expressed in the midgut of *** efficiency was investigated in 2-d-old fifth-instar larvae(high expression of dsRNase2)and 2-d-old pupae(low expression of dsRNase2)by feeding or injecting dsRNA targeting a marker gene that encodes the lethal giant larvae protein(OfLgl).Our results showed that OfLgl only partially silenced the expression of OfLgl in pupae,but not in larvae,suggesting that OfdsRNase2 could contribute to lower RNAi efficiency in larval *** hypothesis was supported by our RNAi-of-RNAi experiment using a tissue culture technique where the silencing efficiency against the reporter gene,OfHexl,was significantly improved after knockdown of *** double luciferase assays were performed to evaluate the role of the four dsRNases in vitro,only OfdsRNase2 expressed in S2 cells significantly affected RNAi efficiency by degrading *** together,our results suggested that the degradation of dsRNA by OfdsRNase2 in the midgut contributed to low RNAi efficiency in *** larvae.

Response of phytoplankton communities to environmental changes in the Bohai Sea in late summer (2011−2020)

Understanding the dynamics of phytoplankton communities in coastal zones is crucial for the management and conservation of coastal *** research indicated that the phytoplankton community structure and dominant taxa in the Bohai Sea(BHS)have exhibited significant shifts from the 1990s to the early 2010s in response to environmental changes,especially the change in nutrient *** study comprehensively investigated the variations in net-collected phytoplankton(>76μm)community structure,diversity,and environmental factors in the BHS during the late summers of 2011-2020,aiming to understand the recent trend in phytoplankton community structure and to explore the interactions between the communities and the *** the study period,the nutrient status in the BHS was characterized by a decrease in dissolved inorganic nitrogen(DIN)concentration,an increase in dissolved inorganic phosphorus(DIP)concentration,and a return of the nitrogen-to-phosphorus(N/P)molar ratio(hereinafter referred to as N/P ratio)to the Redfield ratio since *** eutrophication index(EI)in the BHS remained stable and was generally at a low level(mbalance in nutrient ratio,and the shift in phytoplankton community structure did not continue during the study *** increased abundance of phytoplankton was strongly associated with elevated concentrations of DIN,as well as higher N/P and nitrogen-to-silicon(N/Si)ratios,whereas the greater diversity was strongly linked to higher concentrations of *** and dinoflagellates showed significant differences in their interactions with the environment,and their relative dominance was related to water column depth and stratification intensity;their impacts on the phytoplankton community diversity were also significantly *** variations of certain dominant species,i.e.,Skeletonema costatum,Paralia sulcata,and Tr

Variability of the useful life of reservoirs in tropical locations:A case study from the Burdekin Falls Dam, Australia

Large dam construction for irrigation, hydropower, water supply, and flood control in tropical to subtropical areas increased markedly after 1950. many of the dams built during this period have filled with sediment and no longer perform to their original design specifications; in many cases, forecast dam life was greatly overestimated. This study investigates the useful life of Burdekin Falls Dam(BFD), northeastern Australia and compares the findings with other tropical reservoirs. Using two independent methods it is estimated that between 61 and 65 million m3 of sediment has been deposited in the reservoir over the 24 years of operation through 2011. This sediment volume equates to an average of0.15% of capacity lost per year since construction was completed. If current sediment loads/climate regimes persist, reservoir capacity will be reduced by 50% after 345 years. However, the useful life of the BFD reduces to just 276 years when drawdown data are considered; these data show reservoir use would be affected once 40% of storage was filled with sediment, with a 60% drawdown return period of 1 in 15 years. When compared to similar large tropical to sub-tropical reservoirs, the BFD has a slightly longer reservoir useful life than dams in India and a much longer half-life than for both similar-sized and larger dams in China, Brazil, and Iran. Properties of the BFD that promote a longer useful life include a lower trap efficiency, relatively low annual sediment load delivered to the reservoir, limited sediment deposition behind the dam wall(and uniform distribution of deposited sediment), and the export of highly turbid annual floodwaters before settling and deposition of any remaining sediment within the reservoir.

The Production of Biofuels in South Africa： Policy and Availability of Energy Crops

Biofuels could contribute, on a worldwide basis, to the attainment of international energy-policy objectives in three ways： by reducing dependence on imported oil; by increasing the availability of renewable energy sources; and by dealing with environmental issues. One such environmental issue is the unsustainable use of agricultural land. There is a need in South Africa there to convert to sustainable and renewable energy resources, such as biofuels, but the production of biofuels will ultimately place pressure on the limited and fragile agricultural resources of the country. This paper sets out firstly to investigate national agricultural policies which could impact on the production of biofuels. It points out that national agricultural policies are hampering the domestic production of biofuels in that the focus is on land reform and increasing the volume of agricultural exports, whereas the provision of food and energy to meet domestic needs features only as a secondary aim. The second objective of this paper is to investigate the possibility of utilising energy crops for biofuel production in South Africa. Annual agricultural production, surplus import and export figures, provide an indication of the capacity of South African farmers to produce crops for biofuel production.

Stony Brook’s High-Pressure Laboratory Collaborations with French Scientists

For more than a half century, my colleagues and I in the Stony Brook High Pressure Laboratory have profited from collaborations with French scientists in their laboratories in Orsay, Paris, Toulouse, Lille, Lyon, Strasbourg and Rennes. These interactions have included postdoctoral appointments of French colleagues in our laboratory as well as two année sabbatique by me;in 1983-84, in the Laboratoire de Géophysique et Géodynamique Interne at the Université Paris XI in Orsay and in 2020-2003 in the Laboratoire des Méchanismes et Transfert en Géologie at the Université Paul Sabatier in Toulouse. The objective of this report is to relate this history and to illustrate the scientific advances which resultedmily:Verdana;"> from these collaborations.

Effects of historically familiar and novel predator odors on the physiology of an introduced prey

Predator odors can elicit fear responses in prey and predator odor recognition is generally associated with physiological responses. Prey species are often more likely to respond to the odor of familiar ra- ther than alien predators. However, predator na＇ivety in an introduced prey species has rarely been investigated. We examined the physiological response, as shown by changes in ventilatory vari- ables, of an introduced terrestrial herbivore, the European rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus, in Australia, to the odor of potential predators and to control odors （distilled water and horse）, to explore if res- ponses were limited to historical （cat and fox） predators, or extended to historically novel predators （snake and quoll）. All odors except distilled water elicited a response, with rabbits showing long- term higher respiratory frequencies and lower tidal volumes after introduction of the odors, indi- cating an increase in alertness. However, the intensity of the rabbits＇ reaction could not be directly linked to any pattern of response with respect to the history of predator-prey relationships. Rabbits exhibited significantly stronger reactions in response to both cat and quoll odors than they did to dis- tilled water, but responses to horse, fox, and snake odor were similar to that of water. Our results show that the introduced rabbit can respond to both historical and novel predators in Australia, and suggest that shared evolutionary history is not necessarily a prerequisite to predator odor recognition.

A comparison of three methods of decellularization of pig corneas to reduce immunogenicity

·AIm: To investigate whether decellularization using different techniques can reduce immunogenicity of the cornea, and to explore the decellularized cornea as a scaffold for cultured corneal endothelial cells(CECs).Transplantation of decellularized porcine corneas increases graft transparency and survival for longer periods compared with fresh grafts.·mETHODS: Six-month-old wild-type pig corneas were cut into 100-200 μm thickness, and then decellularized by three different methods: 1) 0.1% sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS); 2) hypoxic nitrogen(N2); and 3) hypertonic NaCl. Thickness and transparency were assessed visually. Fresh and decellularized corneas were stained with hematoxylin/eosin(H&E), and for the presence of galactose-α1,3-galactose(Gal) and N-glycolylneuraminic acid(NeuGc, a nonGal antigen). Also, a human Igm/IgG binding assay was performed. Cultured porcine CECs were seeded on the surface of the decellularized cornea and examined after H&E staining.· RESULTS: All three methods of decellularization reduced the number of keratocytes in the stromal tissue by >80% while the collagen structure remained preserved. No remaining nuclei stained positive for Gal or NeuGc, and expression of these oligosaccharides on collagen was also greatly decreased compared to expression on fresh corneas. Human Igm/IgG binding to decellularized corneal tissue was considerably reduced compared to fresh corneal tissue. The cultured CECs formed a confluent monolayer on the surface of decellularized tissue.· CONCLUSION: Though incomplete, the significant reduction in the cellular component of the decellularized cornea should be associated with a significantly reduced in vivo immune response compared to fresh corneas.
