Evaluating newer generation intraocular lens calculation formulas in manual versus femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery

AIm:To determine the refractive accuracy of the Haigis,Barrett Universal II(Barrett),and Hill-radial basis function 2.0(Hill-RBF)intraocular lens(IOL)power calculations formulas in eyes undergoing manual cataract surgery(mCS)and refractive femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery(Re LACS).mETHODS:This was a REB-approved,retrospective interventional comparative case series of 158 eyes of 158 patients who had preoperative biometry completed using the IOL master 700 and underwent implantation of a Tecnis IOL following uncomplicated cataract surgery using either mCS or *** spherical equivalence(SE)was predicted using the Haigis,Barrett,and Hill-RBF *** older generation formula(Hoffer Q)was included in the *** refractive error(mE)was calculated one month *** lens factors of all formulas were retrospectively optimized to set the mE to 0 for each formula across all *** median absolute errors(medAE)and the proportion of eyes achieving an absolute error(AE)within 0.5 diopters(D)were compared between the two formulas among mCS and ReLACS eyes,***:Of the 158 eyes studied,64 eyes underwent mCS and 94 eyes underwent *** mCS eyes,the medAE did not differ between the formulas(P=0.59),however among ReLACS eyes,Barrett and Hill-RBF were more accurate(P=0.001).Barrett and Hill-RBF were both more likely to yield AEmong both groups(Pmula lead to greater refractive accuracy and likelihood of refractive success when compare to Haigis in eyes undergoing Re LACS.

In this work,the microbiologically influenced corrosion(mIC)of Fe_(40)(CoCrmnNi)_(60) and Fe_(60)(CoCrmnNi)_(40) medium entropy alloys(mEAs)induced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa(***)was *** behaviors during 14 days of immersion in sterile and ***-inoculated culture media are *** sterile conditions,both mEAs exhibited good corrosion resistance against the culture medium *** the presence of ***,the pitting corrosion of mEAs was *** results of inductively coupled plasma‒mass spectrometry(ICP‒mS)and potentiodynamic polarization tests showed that the presence of *** promoted the selective dissolution of passive film and accelerated the corrosion of *** results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)and mott-Schottky measurements further demonstrated the degradation effect of *** on the passive *** with Fe_(60)(CoCrmnNi)_(40),Fe_(40)(CoCrmnNi)_(60) manifested better resistance to the mIC caused by ***,which may be attributed to more Cr oxides and fewer Fe oxides of the passive film.

Effects of omega-3 supplementation on components of the endocannabinoid system and metabolic and inflammatory responses in adipose and liver of peripartum dairy cows

Background:Dietary supplementation of omega-3 fatty acids can reduce the activation of the endocannabinoid system(ECS)by decreasing the availability of arachidonic acid,thus lowering endocannabinoids(e CBs)*** ECS is a modulator of energy metabolism,stress response and inflammation in mammals,yet there is little information on the roles of the ECS in transition dairy *** the periparturient period,the adipose tissue and liver are the main metabolic organs that participate in the adaptations of dairy cows to onset of lactation;however,exceeded adipose tissue lipolysis and accumulation of lipids in the liver have adverse effects on cows'*** we aimed to examine whether omega-3 supplementation during the transition period will modulate ECS activation and affect metabolic and inflammatory indices in postpartum dairy cows,by supplementing twenty-eight transition Holstein dairy cows with either saturated fat(CTL)or encapsulated flaxseed oil(FLX).Components of the ECS,metabolic and inflammatory markers were measured in blood,liver,and subcutaneous adipose ***:FLX supplementation reduced feed intake by 8.1%(Pma levels of arachidonic acid(by 44.2%;P=0.02)and anandamide(by 49.7%;P=0.03)postpartum compared to *** m RNA transcription levels of the cannabinoid receptor 1(CNR1/CB1)tended to be lower(2.5 folds)in white blood cells of FLX than in CTL(P=0.10),and protein abundance of ECS enzyme monoacylglycerol lipase was higher in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of FLX than in CTL(P=0.04).In adipose tissue,palmitoylethanolamide levels were lower in FLX than in CTL(by 61.5%;P=0.02),relative m RNA transcription of lipogenic genes were higher,and the protein abundance of cannabinoid receptor 2(P=0.08)and monoacylglycerol lipase(P=0.10)tended to be higher in FLX compared to *** 2-arachidonoylglycerol tended to be higher(by 73.1%;P=0.07),and interlukin-6 m RNA transcription level was 1.5 folds lower in liver of FLX

Analysis of trace elements in air particulate matters by non-suppressed ion chromatography

The application of non-suppressed ion chromatography for monitoring of trace elements in air particulate matter was studied in the present investigation. The results indicate that the use of microwave acid digestion method is superior in comparison with the conventional thermal acid digestion method as it leads to higher recovery, better reproducibility, lower volatility loss, better protection against environmental contamination and much less digestion time (5 minutes vs. 24 hours). The use of eluent as extractant is shown to reduce the water dip problem in the chro-matogram. The addition of chelating agent in the eluent coupled with UV detection is shown to provide satisfactory chromatographic separation and good sensitivity for the analysis of transition metals present in the air particulate matter. Using the U.S. National Bureau of Standards Reference material 1648 Urban Particulate matter as standard for checking, the analytical procedure is shown to give good recovery and reproducibility for the detection of the following cations and anions in air particulate matter: Fe2 Cu, mn, Pb, Zn, mg, Na, HN4+, Cl-, NO3- and SO42-. Field test was also performed to check the applicability of the method and the results obtained were discussed in the present paper.

Role of CD56-expressing immature biliary epithelial cells in biliary atresia

AIm: To analyze the clinical and pathological parameters and expression of the neural cell adhesion molecule(CD56) in patients with biliary atresia(BA).mETHODS: Established clinical laboratory markers of hepatic function, including enzyme activity, protein synthesis, and bilirubin metabolism, were evaluated in patients with BA and compared with those in patients with choledochal cysts and neonatal hepatitis. Pathological changes in tissue morphology and fibrosis were examined by histological and tissue collagen staining. Immunohistochemical staining for the biliary epithelial cell markers CD56 and CK19 together with the Notch signaling related molecules Notch1 and Notch2 was performed in the context of alterations in the structure of intrahepatic biliary ***: Differences in some clinical laboratoryparameters among the three diseases examined were observed, but they did not correlate with the pathological classification of fibrosis in BA. Immunohistochemical staining showed the presence of CD56-positive immature bile ducts in most patients(74.5%) with BA but not in patients with choledochal cysts or neonatal hepatitis. The number of CD56-expressing cells correlated with disease severity, with more positive cells present in the later stages of liver damage(81.8% vs 18.2%). Furthermore, bile plugs were mainly found in CD56-positive immature biliary ducts. Notch signaling was a key regulatory pathway in biliary duct formation and played a role in tissue fibrosis. Notch1 was co-expressed in CD56-positive cells, whereas Notch2 was found exclusively in blood vessels in the portal area of patients with BA. CONCLUSION: The maturation of biliary epithelial cells and the expression of Notch may play a role in the pathogenesis of BA.

Effect of music on procedure time and sedation during colonoscopy:A meta-analysis

AIm:To integrate results from different studies in examining the effectiveness of music in reducing the procedure time and the amount of sedation used during colonoscopic procedure. mETHODS: An electronic search in various databases was performed to identify related articles. Study quality was evaluated by the Jadad’s scale. The random effect model was used to pool the effect from individual trials and the Cohen Q-statistic was used to determine heterogeneity. Egger’s regression was used to detect publication bias. RESULTS: Eight studies with 722 subjects were included in this meta-analysis. The combined mean difference for the time taken for the colonoscopy procedure between the music and control groups was -2.84 with 95% CI (-5.61 to -0.08), implying a short time for the music group. The combined mean difference for the use of sedation was -0.46 with 95%CI (-0.91 to -0.01), showing a significant reduction in the use of sedation in the music group. Heterogeneity was observed in both analyses but no publication bias was detected. CONCLUSION: Listening to music is effective in reducing procedure time and amount of sedation during colonoscopy and should be promoted.

Rectangular single-mode polymer optical fiber for femtosecond laser inscription of FBGs

In this study,a novel rectangular polymer single-mode optical fiber for femtosecond(fs)laser-inscribed fiber Bragg gratings(FBGs)is proposed and *** cylindrical geometry of the widely used circular fiber elongates the fs laser beam along the fiber axis,resulting in reduced laser intensity and requiring index-matching oil immersion during FBG ***,the flat geometry and negligible surface roughness of the featured fiber significantly diminish this lensing distortion and eliminate the need for oil immersion,thereby resulting in optimal focusing of the laser beam,permitting direct and efficient inscription of FBGs within the optical *** core and cladding of the rectangular fiber were fabricated using two different grades of ZEONEX,a cyclo olefin polymer,which have slightly different refractive *** similar glass transition temperature for core and cladding simplifies the fiber drawing process,and a rectangular single-mode optical fiber with dimensions of 213μm×160μm and core diameter of 9.4μm was fabricated using an in-house fiber drawing facility.A second harmonic(520 nm)fs laser beam was used to successfully inscribe a 2-mm-long FBG in the rectangular fiber within a few seconds with a point-by-point *** inscription of a single FBG leads to the excitation of higher order FBG peaks at 866.8 and 1511.3 nm,corresponding to widely used wavelength bands in fiber optic *** strain and temperature sensitivities of the FBG were measured to be 7.31 nm=%ε(0.731pm∕με)and 10 pm/℃,and 12.95 nm∕%ε(1.29 pm∕με)and 15 pm/℃at 866.8 nm and 1511.3 nm,respectively.

Object-oriented CAD for Hydraulic Circuits of Pressing machines

This paper describes the design and implementation of an intelligent computer-aided design (ICAD) system for hydraulic circuits of pressing machines. The CAD system is developed based on the object-oriented approach. The application domain of hydraulic presses has been studied thoroughly. The engineering data and the design knowledge are organized in an object-oriented database. A case study has been selected to illustrate the usefulness of the object-oriented CAD system in real applications.
