Investigation of effect of near-fault m.tions on substandard bridge structures

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of near-fault ground m.tions on substandard bridge colum.s and piers. To accom.lish these goals, several large scale reinforced concrete m.dels were constructed and tested on a shake table using near- and far-field ground m.tion records. Because the input earthquakes for the test m.dels had different characteristics, three different m.asures were used to evaluate the effect of the input earthquake. These m.asures are peak shake table acceleration, spectral acceleration at the fundam.ntal period of the test specim.ns, and the specim.n drift ratios. For each m.asure, force-displacem.nt relationships, strains, curvatures, drift ratios, and visual dam.ge were evaluated. Results showed that regardless of the m.asure of input or response, the near-fault record generally led to larger strains, curvatures, and drift ratios. Furtherm.re, residual displacem.nts were sm.ll com.ared to those for colum.s m.eting current seism.c code requirem.nts.

This paper reports a com.utational study on the seism.c response of a three-span highway bridge system.incorporating conventional and novel substructure details for im.roved seism.c *** bridge has three continuous spans supported by two single-colum. piers and integral abutm.nts founded on drilled *** will be the first full-scale highway bridge to use superelastic shape m.m.ry alloy bars (Sm.)and engineered cem.ntitious com.osite (ECC)to m.tigate colum. plastic hinge dam.ge and m.nim.ze residual displacem.nts after a strong earthquake. A three-dim.nsional com.utational m.del capturing the nonlinear constitutive response of the novel m.terials and the effects of dynam.c soil-structure interaction was developed to assess the seism.c response of the bridge in finite-elem.nt software *** versions of the sam. bridge were analyzed and com.ared,one with conventional cast-in-place reinforced concrete colum.s,and the other with top plastic hinges incorporating Nickel-Titanium.(NiTi)Sm. reinforcing bars and *** novel Sm./ECC plastic hinges were found to substantially reduce dam.ge and post-earthquake residual displacem.nts in the bridge substructure,but led to larger m.xim.m.drifts relative to the bridge with conventional reinforced concrete plastic *** analysis results suggested that the novel plastic hinges could lead to im.roved post-earthquake serviceability of bridges after intense earthquakes.

Pretest analysis of shake table response of a two-span steel girder bridge incorporating accelerated bridge construction connections

This paper presents pretest analysis of a shake table test m.del of a 0.35-scale,two-span,steel plate girder *** objective of pretest analysis was to obtain an insight on the seism.c response of the bridge m.del during the shake table *** bridge included seat type abutm.nts,full-depth precast deck panels,and a two-colum. bent in which colum.s were pinned to the footing and integral with *** accelerated bridge construction connections were incorporated in the bridge *** analytical m.del was developed in OpenSees and was subjected to ten input bi-directional earthquake m.tions including near-fault and far-field *** overall seism.c response of the bridge was satisfactory for all the earthquake records at 100%,150%,and 200%design *** connections and capacity-protected com.onents rem.ined elastic,and the average ductility capacity surpassed the ductility dem.nd even at 200%design *** experim.ntal fragility curves developed for RC bridge colum.s,it was predicted that there was a probability of 45%that colum.s would undergo the im.inent failure in the last run and a probability of 30%for their failure.
