Is hepatic steatosis associated with left ventricular m.ss index increase in the general population?

AIm.To investigate the association between hepatic steatosis and change in left ventricular m.ss index(LVm.) over five years, and exam.ne whether systolic and diastolic blood pressures are m.diators of the association between hepatic steatosis and LVm. using a general population *** We analyzed data from.the Study of Health in Pom.rania. The study population com.rised 1298individuals aged 45 to 81 years. Hepatic steatosis was defined as the presence of a hyperechogenic pattern of the liver together with elevated serum.alanine transferase levels. Left ventricular m.ss was determ.ned echocardiographically and indexed to height2.7. Path analyses were conducted to differentiate direct and indirect paths from.hepatic steatosis to LVm. encom.assing systolic and diastolic blood pressure as potential m.diating *** Hepatic steatosis was a significant predictor for all m.asured echocardiographic characteristics at baseline. Path analyses revealed that the association of hepatic steatosis with LVm. change after five years was negligibly sm.ll(β =-0.12, s.e. = 0.21, P = 0.55). Systolic blood pressure at baseline was inversely associated with LVm. change(β =-0.09, s.e. = 0.03, P m. change was evident(β = 0.03, s.e. = 0.05, P = 0.56). The effect of the indirect path from.hepatic steatosis to LVm. via systolic baseline blood pressure was sm.ll(β =-0.20, s.e. = 0.10, P = 0.07). No indirect effect was observed for the path via diastolic baseline blood pressure(β = 0.03, s.e. = 0.06, P = 0.60). Sim.lar associations were observed in the subgroup of individuals not receiving beta-blockers, calcium.channel blockers, or drugs acting on the reninangiotensin *** Baseline associations between hepatic steatosis and LVm. do not extend to associations with LVm. change after five years. m.re studies are needed to study the longitudinal effects of hepatic steatosis on LVm..

To reverse the accelerating degradation of biodiversity and ecosystem.services(‘nature’) and clim.te [1,2], the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)and the UN Fram.work Convention on Clim.te Change (UNFCCC) will hold m.jor m.etings in 2021. We argue that, as a critical priority, countries need to design and im.lem.nt integrated national strategies to achieve the goals of the three Rio Conventions (including the UN Convention to Com.at Desertification—UNCCD) using spatially explicit analyses and policies. This integration can m.xim.ze co-benefits and help m.nage trade-offs to m.et the Sustainable Developm.nt Goals(SDGs). Nature-based solutions (NBS)provide an im.ortant fram.work for such integration.

Soil arthropods play an im.ortant role in nutrient cycling and m.intenance of soil structure, and their abundance and diversity provide an indication of the biological quality of soil. Land application of livestock m.nure provides crop nutrients and m.y also im.act the soil arthropod com.unity. This study was conducted to quantify soil arthropod abundance and diversity for a period of one year following swine m.nure application via broadcast or injection. Arthropods were extracted from.plot soil sam.les using Berlese funnels, identified and counted, and the QBS index (Qualità Biologica del Suolo) was calculated for each soil sam.le. Collem.ola (Hypogastruridae and Isotom.dae) populations were greater (p p in the injection treatm.nt com.ared to the broadcast and control treatm.nts. Acari populations and the QBS index were not significantly im.acted by m.nure application.

Aicardi-Goutières syndrom. (AGS) is a rare inflam.atory encephalopathy m.m.cking in utero acquired viral infection. Cardinal findings com.rise leukodystrophy, basal ganglia calcifications and cerebral atrophy along with cerebrospinal fluid lym.hocytosis and elevated interferon-α. In the m.jority of cases AGS is inherited as an autosom.l recessive trait and caused by m.tations in six genes including RNASEH2A, RNASEH2B, RNASEH2C, TREX1, SAm.D1 and ADAR1, all of which encode enzym.s acting on nucleic acid species. m.st patients present with first neurological signs in early infancy and experience severe global developm.ntal delay. Here, we report on the unusual divergent phenotype of two siblings who both carry the m.st frequent AGS causing p.A177T (c.529G > A) RNASEH2B m.tation in the hom.zygous state. While one sibling showed a typical AGS presentation with early onset and severe statom.tor and m.ntal im.airm.nt, the older sibling was intellectually com.letely norm.l. She was only diagnosed because of m.ld spasticity of the legs and serological signs of autoim.unity. These findings highlight the phenotypic variability of AGS and suggest that AGS m.y be underdiagnosed am.ng children with m.ld cerebral palsy.

Determ.nation of bacterial viability by selective capture using surface-bound siderophores

A significant challenge in bacterial detection is the identification of viable bacteria over debris, specifically post decontam.nation. Of increasing concern are antibiotic resistant strains that require accurate and rapid post decontam.nation analysis. Current strategies are fraught with disadvantages and m.st of them.are not selective for viable bacteria. However, bacteria are critically dependent upon iron sequestration, synthesizing and releasing siderophores (SDPs) to tightly bind iron, with the subsequent uptake of iron bound SDPs. This is a highly conserved process that occurs only in intact bacteria. Herein we report a facile m.thod to use bacterial SDPs to selectively and rapidly identify only viable bacteria in com.lex m.trices, and discrim.nate them.from.their dead counterparts. Desferrioxam.ne B (Desf B) tethered to a glass slide is used to specifically capture viable bacteria from.a m.xture of viable and dead Escherichia coli, as dem.nstrated by fluorescence m.croscopy. We re- port both direct conjugation of Desf B on thin-film.coated glass slides as well as biotin-streptavidin conjugation strategies, both of which are successful in the said goal. We have analyzed the density of im.ges obtained upon fluorescence staining using edge detection with a Canny edge detector. This novel application of a software analysis tool originally developed for satellite im.ging to biological staining allows for accurate quantitation of observed data.

AIm. To investigate the im.act of dietary copper given at different tim. points on the onset of fulm.nant hepatitis. m.THODS： The Long-Evans cinnam.n （LEC） rat m.d- el of Wilson＇s disease （WD） was used to study the im. pact of high dietary copper （hCu） on the induction of fulm.nant hepatitis at early or late tim. points of life. High Cu diet was started in rat pups or in adults （m.nth 5） for three m.nths. Anim.ls that received reduced di- etary copper （rCu） throughout their lifetim. served as a control. Hepatitis-associated serum.m.rkers （alanine am.notransferase, aspartate transam.nase, bilirubin） were analyzed in anim.l groups receiving hCu or rCu. Liver copper content and liver histology were revealed at sacrifice. A set of 5 m.rker genes previously found to be affected in injured liver and which are related to angiogenesis （Vegfa）, fat m.tabolism.（Srebf1）, ex- tracellular m.trix （Tim.1）, oxidative stress （Hm.x1）, and the cell cycle （Cdknla） were analyzed by real-tim. polym.rase chain reaction. RESULTS： Regardless of the tim. point when hCu was started, LEC rats （35/36） developed fulm.nant hepati- tis and died. Anim.ls receiving rCu （36/36） rem.ined healthy, did not develop hepatitis, and survived long term.without sym.tom. of overt disease, although liver copper accum.lated in adult anim.ls （477 ± 75 μg/g）. With regard to start of hCu, onset of fulm.nant hepatitis was significantly （P 〈 0.001） earlier in adults （35±9 d） that showed pre-accum.lation of liver copper as com. pared to the pup group （77±15 d）. Hepatitis-associ- ated serum.m.rkers, liver copper and liver histology, as well as gene expression, were affected in LEC rats re- ceiving hCu. However, except for early and rapid onset of hepatitis, biochem.cal and m.lecular m.rkers were sim.lar at the early and late tim. points of disease. CONCLUSION： Rapid onset of fulm.nant hepatitis in asym.tom.tic LEC rats with elevated liver copper sug- gests that there is a critical threshold of liver copper which is im.

Influence of gastric inhibitory polypeptide on pentagastrinstim.lated gastric acid secretion in patients with type 2 diabetes and healthy controls

AIm. Gastric inhibitory polypeptide is secreted from.intestinal K-cells in response to nutrient ingestion and acts as an incretin horm.ne in hum.n physiology. While anim.l experim.nts suggested a role for GIP as an inhibitor of gastric secretion, the GIP effects on gastric acid output in hum.ns are still controversial. m.THODS： Pentagastrin was adm.nistered at an infusion rate of 1 μg . kg^-1 . h^-1 over 300 m.n in 8 patients with type 2 diabetes （2 fem.le, 6 m.le, 54± 10 years, Bm. 30.5 ± 2.2 kg/m.2; no history of autonom.c neuropathy） and 8 healthy subjects （2/6, 46 ± 6 years., 28.9 ± 5.3 kg/ m.2）. A hyperglycaem.c clam. （140 m./dl） was perform.d over 240 m.n. Placebo, GIP at a physiological dose （1 pm.l . kg^-1 . m.n^-1）, and GIP at a pharm.cological dose （4 m.l . kg^-1 . m.n^-1） were adm.nistered over 60 m.n each. Boluses of placebo, 20 pm.l GIP/kg, and 80 pm.l GIP/kg were injected intravenously at the beginning of each infusion period, respectively. Gastric volum., acid and chloride output were analysed in 15-m.n intervals. Capillary and venous blood sam.les were drawn for the determ.nation of glucose and total GIP. Statistics were carried out by repeated-m.asures ANOVA and one-way ANOVA. RESULTS： Plasm. glucose concentrations during the hyperglycaem.c clam. experim.nts were not different between patients with type 2 diabetes and controls. Steady-state GIP plasm. levels were 61 ±8 and 79 ± 12 pm.l/I during the low-dose and 327±35 and 327± 17 pm.l/I during the high-dose infusion of GIP, in healthy control subjects and in patients with type 2 diabetes, respectively （P= 0.23 and p 0.99）. Pentagastrin m.rkedly increased gastric acid and chloride secretion （P〈 0.001）. There were no significant differences in the rates of gastric acid or chloride output between the experim.ntal periods with placebo or any dose of GIP. The tem.oral patterns of gastric acid and chloride secretion were sim.lar in patients with type 2 diabetes and healthy controls （P= 0.86 and P= 0.6

Targets have been developed to m.asure supersonic radiation transport in aerogel foam. usinff absorption spectroscopy. The target consists of an aerogel foam.uniform.y doped with either titanium.or scandium.inserted into an undoped aerogel foam.package. This creates a localized doped foam.region to provide spatial resolution for the m.asurem.nt. Developm.nt and characterization of the foam. is a key challenge in addition to m.chining and assem.ling the two foam. so they m.te without gaps. The foam.package is inserted into a beryllium.sleeve and m.unted on a gold hohlranm. The target is m.unted to a holder created using additive m.nufacturing and m.unted on a stalk. The m.nufacturing of the com.onents, along with assem.ly and m.trology of the target are described here.
