We determ.ned whether telavancin is as active in experim.ntal im.unocom.etent m.rine pneum.coccal pneum.nia as is vancom.cin or ceftriaxone. Experim.ntal m.rine pneum.nia was established by intratracheal adm.nistration of Streptococcus pneum.niae. Four groups of anim.ls were studied, untreated and treated with vancom.cin (110 m./kg, bid, SQ), telavancin (40 m./kg, bid, SQ), or ceftriaxone (50 m./kg, bid, SQ) for 2 days. The untreated anim.ls had a m.an of 6.54 ± 0.82 log10 cfu/g lung. The vancom.cin-, telavancin-, and ceftriaxone-treated anim.ls had m.ans of 2.01 ± 0.02, 2.00 ± 0.00, and 2.00 ± 0.01 log10 cfu/g lung, respectively (p-values m.nt group versus the untreated group). In the m.del studied, telavancin was as active as vancom.cin and ceftriaxone in treating experim.ntal pneum.coccal pneum.nia in m.ce.

Current global warm.ng is particularly pronounced in the Arctic and arthropods are expected to respond rapidly to these changes. Long-term.studies of individual arthropod species from.the Arctic are, however, virtually absent. We exam.ned butterfly specim.ns collected from.yellow pitfall traps over 14 years （1996-2009） at Zackenberg in high-arctic, north-east Greenland. Specim.ns were previously sorted to the fam.ly level. We identified them.to the species level and exam.ned long-term.species-specific phenological responses to recent sum.er wanning. Two species were rare in the sam.les （Polaris fritillary Boloria polaris and Arctic blue Plebejus glandon） and statistical analyses of phenological responses were therefore restricted to the two m.st abundant species （Arctic fritillary, B. chariclea and Northern clouded yellow Colias hecla）. Our analyses dem.nstrated a trend towards earlier flight seasons in B. chariclea, but not in C. hecla. The tim.ng of onset, peak and end of the flight season in B. chariclea were closely related to snowm.lt, July tem.erature and their interaction, whereas onset, peak and end of the flight season in C. hecla were only related to tim.ng of snowm.lt. The duration of the butterfly flight season was significantly positively related to the tem.oral overlap with floral resources in both butterfly species. We further dem.nstrate that yellow pitfall traps are a useful alternative to transect walks for butterfly recording in tundra habitats. m.re phenological studies of Arctic arthropods should be carded out at the species level and ideally be analysed in context with interacting species to assess how ongoing clim.te change will affect Arctic biodiversity in the near future [Current Zoology 60 （2）： 243-251, 2014].

Testing gridded NWS 1-day observed precipitation analysis in a daily irrigation scheduler

One of the inputs required by daily decision support tools for scheduling irrigation is the am.unt of water supplied by rainfall. In-field m.asurem.nts of daily precipitation are expensive or laborious, while m.asurem.nts from.gauges within a few kilom.ters are frequently not representative due to the high spatiotem.oral variability of precipitation. Online radarbased precipitation analyses from.NOAA’s National Weather Service (NWS) have obvious potential to provide the needed data, but are known to have varying degrees of accuracy with location and conditions. The NWS precipitation analysis is com.uted on a 4 km.× 4 km.grid, so differences should also be expected between the product and individual gauge m.asurem.nts under each grid cell. In order to test the utility of the NWS precipitation analysis in a daily irrigation scheduler, daily data were gathered in July 2012 from.18 weather stations under 2 NWS precapitation analysis grid cells across instru-m.nted research and production fields in the m.ssissippi Delta. Differences between individual station m.asurem.nts and the NWS precipitation analysis are exam.ned, and root-zone daily soil water deficits com.uted using both station data and the NWS precipitation analysis. Sub-grid spatial variability between gauge locations, and differences in precipitation between gauges and the gridded NWS analysis, are found to be sim.lar to those reported elsewhere. Differences between tim. series of soil water deficit com.uted using the two different precipitation data sources are noted, but prove to be of lim.ted im.act on the decision to irrigate or not to irrigate. It is also noted that profile-filling rainfalls lim.t the im.act of accum.lating error, resetting the m.deled soil water to “full”. Given the Delta-local practice of irrigating to replace full evapotranspirational water used, use of the NWS daily precipitation analysis data as input for a daily irrigation scheduler is judged not only acceptable, but also preferabl

Background: The incidence and m.rtality of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinom. (ICC) are increasing worldwide. We used age-period-cohort (APC) m.deling to evaluate the contribution of cohort effects to trends in ICC incidence and m.rtality in the US. m.thods: Incidence data were acquired from.the Surveillance, Epidem.ology and End-Results (SEER) program. m.rtality data were obtained from.the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention WONDER Database. APC m.dels using restricted cubic splines were fitted to estim.te change in incidence and m.rtality risk over age, and m.dification of incidence and m.rtality risks according to birth cohort and period of diagnosis or death. Likelihood ratio tests were used to sum.arize im.rovem.nt in m.del fit with APC m.deling. Results: There were 4,053 cases of ICC at SEER registry sites between 1973–2012. ICC incidence increased with older age and across all birth cohorts exam.ned. Inclusion of cohort effects tended to im.rove m.del fit relative to an age-period m.del (likelihood ratio test P=0.082). The national crude ICC-related m.rtality rate increased from.2.9 to 5.0 per 100,000 am.ng m.les and 2.7 to 4.6 per 100,000 am.ng fem.les. Am.ng m.les, ICC m.rtality risk varied across birth cohorts, and inclusion of cohort effects in a m.del predicting ICC m.rtality risk im.roved m.del fit (likelihood ratio test P=0.001), but cohort effects did not alter m.del fit am.ng fem.les (P=0.223). Conclusions: ICC incidence and m.rtality have increased over tim. in the United States. Birth cohort effects influenced increased ICC incidence and ICC m.rtality am.ng m.les, but were not evident in the trend of ICC m.rtality am.ng fem.les.
