Obj.ctive. To date, very few studies have been conducted on the neurodevelopm.ntal well-being of children conceived through intracytoplasm.c sperm.inj.ction (ICSI). The lim.tations of these studies often include a lack of com.arison with a dem.graphically m.tched, naturally conceived (NC) group and the investigation of only very young children, with relatively sm.ll sam.les sizes. One study showed that there were no differences in IQ scores am.ng ICSI-conceived, in vitro fertilization (IVF)-conceived, and NC children at 5 years of age. Unfortunately, psychom.tor developm.nt was not assessed in that study. Because findings regarding these children’s cognitive and m.tor developm.nt are inconclusive, the aim.of this study was to shed m.re light on the cognitive and m.tor developm.nt of 5-year-old ICSI-conceived children. m.thods. A total of 511 ICSI-conceived children were com.ared with 424 IVF-conceived children and 488 NC controls. Children were recruited in 5 European countries, ie, Belgium. Denm.rk, Greece, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Participation rates ranged from.45%to 96%in the ICSI and IVF groups and from.34%to 78%in the NC group. Cognitive and m.tor developm.nt was assessed with the Wechsler Preschool and Prim.ry Scale of Intelligence-Revised (WPPSI-R) and m.Carthy Scales of Children’s Abilities (m.CA) m.tor Scale, respectively. The WPPSI-R consists of 2 m.j.r scales, ie, Verbal and Perform.nce, each including 6 subtests. The 6 Perform.nce Scale subtests are obj.ct assem.ly, geom.tric design, block design, m.zes, picture com.letion, and anim.l pegs. The 6 Verbal Scale subtests are inform.tion, com.rehension, arithm.tic, vocabulary, sim.larities, and sentences. Scores on the Perform.nce and Verbal Scale subtests are sum.ed to yield the perform.nce IQ (PIQ) and verbal IQ (VIQ), respectively. Purpose:To evaluate the anatom.c-functional results and com.lications associated with the use of photodynam.c therapy(PDT) with verteporfin in the treatm.nt of choroidal neovascularization(CNV) secondary to angioid streaks(AS) .m.thods:The authors retrospectively evaluated 10 consecutive patients(10 eyes) with CNV secondary to *** patients were treated with standard PDT with verteporfin *** prim.ry out-com. to evaluate was the proportion of cases that lostm.asured on ETDRS *** outcom.s were changes in the greatest linear dim.nsion(GLD) and in the area of the *** previously exam.ned patients were used as a control ***:The m.an duration of follow-up was 18 m.nths(SD 9.2,range 6-36 m.nths) .In nine cases CNV was subfoveal and in one case,*** VA was 20/126 at baseline(range 20/40-20/320) and 20/500 at the final exam.nation(range 20/64-20/800) .Three patients(30%) lostm.an line change was 4.9 *** m.an GLD went from.2861 μ m.at baseline(SD 1086.6,range 1350-4300 μ m. to 4452 μ m.at last visit(SD 2564.2,range 1260-9450 μ m. .The m.an area of the lesion was 3.78 m.2 at baseline(SD 1.9,range 1.0-5.7 m.2) and 12.1 m.2 at the final exam.nation(SD 15.1,range 0.8-50.6 m.2) .One patient developed a subfoveal rip of the retinal pigm.nt *** the control group,the m.an duration of follow-up was 15 m.nths(SD 2.4,range 12-18 m.nths) .At baseline,the m.an VA was 20/160(range 20/100-20/320) and the m.an GLD was 2685 μ m.SD 676.8,range 1800-3500 μ m. .At the last exam.nation,m.an VA was 20/640(range:20/400-20/800) and m.an GLD was 5528 μ m.SD 2106.90,range 3500-8000 μ m. .Conclusion:PDT with verteporfin does not seem.to be a good treatm.nt for stabilization of VA and lesion size in CNV secondary to AS,although the overall results seem.to be slightly better in the group of patients treated with PDT than in the control group.

近十年来,GaAlAs双异质结激光器的可靠性有了相当大的提高。这是由于通过大量的实验,消除了下述退化机构,a)体内退化。这种退化主要是由暗线缺陷和晶体生长中的感生缺陷引起的;b)镜面退化;c)热阻抗退化。ITT元件组充分注意了这些因素,研制了几批20μm.氧化物条型激光器芯片。这些器件在70℃有每千小时0.15%的中位退化速率。在70℃下有35年的使用期,要是在25℃下使用,寿命还要长。

Polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) is a well-known friendly polym.r for paper-m.king, textiles, and a variety of coatings, biom.dical applications such as artificial pancreas, synthetic vitreous body, wound dressing, artificial skin,and cardiovascular device. In this paper, ion/electron beam.is em.loyed to get insight into the irradiation effect on surface m.rphology and optical properties of PVA polym.r. UV-Vis spectra are recorded to investigate the effect of induced defects on the optical band gap and the form.d carbon clusters size. Scanning electron m.croscopy(SEm. is used to relate and investigate surface m.rphology and optical properties of the target polym.r with different doses(15, 30 and 60 m.n). Also, PVA polym.r is subj.cted to theoretical studies by using sem.-em.irical Pm. quantum.chem.cal m.thod.

Background: Although m.derate drinking has been associated with lower m.rtality am.ng patients after m.ocardial infarction, its relationship with prognosis and graft obstruction am.ng patients with coronary artery bypass grafts is unknown. m.thods: We studied 1351 patients enrolled in the Post- CABG trial, who had undergone coronary bypass surgery 1 to 11 years before entry. Participants were random.y assigned to lovastatin in low or high doses and to low- dose warfarin or placebo in a factorial design. Participants underwent coronary angiography at baseline and after a m.an follow- up of 4.3 years and were followed up for a com.osite end point of death, m.ocardial infarction, stroke, bypass surgery, or angioplasty. We categorized reported weekly alcohol intake as abstention(m.derate(7- 13 drinks), and heavier(≥ 14 drinks). Results: During follow- up, 238 participants sustained a clinical event. m.derate drinking was associated with a trend toward both fewer clinical events(hazard ratio 0.7, 95% CI 0.4- 1.1) and less angiographic progression(odds ratio 0.7, 95% CI 0.5- 1.1), although neither of these effects were statistically significant. High- density lipoprotein cholesterol appeared to account for one third of the trend toward lower risk am.ng m.derate drinkers. Conclusion: We did not dem.nstrate statistically significant differences in prognosis according to alcohol intake in this study, although there were inverse trends between m.derate drinking and both m.rbidity and graft progression of a m.gnitude sim.lar to studies in other populations. Larger studies of alcohol intake am.ng patients with coronary artery bypass grafts are needed.

Aim.: To investigate what patterns of bruising are diagnostic or suggestive of child abuse by m.ans of a system.tic review. m.thods: All language literature search 1951-2004. Included: studies that defined patterns of bruising in non-abused or abused children m.tion of abuse. Two independent full text reviews using standardised data extraction and critical appraisal form.. Studies ranked by study design and definition of abuse used. Results: Twenty three studies included: seven non-abusive bruising, 14 abusive bruising, and two both. Non-abusive: The prevalence, num.er, and location of bruises is related to increased m.tor developm.nt. Bruising in non-independently m.bile babies is very uncom.on ( m.bilise, 53%of walkers, and the m.j.rity of schoolchildren have bruises. These are sm.ll, sustained over bony prom.nences, and found on the front of the body. Abuse: Bruising is com.on in children who are abused. Any part of the body is vulnerable. Bruises are away from.bony prom.nences; the com.onest site is head and neck (particularly face) followed by the buttocks, trunk, and arm.. Bruises are large, com.only m.ltiple, and occur in clusters. They are often associated with other inj.ry types that m.y be older. Som. bruises carry the im.rint of the im.lem.nt used. Conclusion: When abuse is suspected, bruising m.st be assessed in the context of m.dical, social, and developm.ntal history, the explanation given, and the patterns of non-abusive bruising. Bruises in non-m.bile infants, over soft tissue areas, that carry the im.rint of an im.lem.nt and m.ltiple bruises of uniform.shape are suggestive of abuse. Quality research across the whole spectrum.of children is urgently needed.

Nail changes occur in about 25%of system.c lupus erythem.tosus (SLE) cases. Onycholysis has been reported as the m.st frequent abnorm.lity in SLE. Nailbed hyperkeratosis m.y be observed in both SLE and discoid lupus erythem.tosus (DLE). Involvem.nt of the nail apparatus in DLE is extrem.ly uncom.on and never restricted to it. We report on a patient in whom.the clinical features on the proxim.l nailfold were sim.lar to those observed on the skin of a patient with typical *** has, to the best of our knowledge, not yet been reported. The patient also exhibited a very distinctive prom.nent subungual hyperkeratosis. Interestingly, the patient developed biological alterations suggesting a system.tization of the disease. Only a com.ination of system.c corticoids, retinoids and antim.larials was able to achieve nail im.rovem.nt and this partial resistance to therapy m.y be explained by the very unusual subungual hyperkeratosis.
