Distinct m.des of Winter Arctic Sea Ice m.tion and Their Associations with Surface Wind Variability

Using m.nthly m.an sea ice velocity data obtained from.the International Arctic Buoy Program.e （IABP） for the period of 1979–1998 and the m.nthly m.an NCEP/NCAR re-analysis dataset （1960–2002）, we investigated the spatiotem.oral evolution of the leading sea ice m.tion m.de （based on a com.lex correlation m.trix constructed of norm.lized sea ice m.tion velocity） and their association with sea level pressure （SLP） and the predom.nant m.des of surface wind field variability. The results indicate that the leading winter sea ice m.tion m.de’s spatial evolution is characterized by two alternating and distinct sea ice m.des, or their linear com.ination. One m.de （m.） shows a nearly closed cyclonic or anti-cyclonic circulation anom.ly in the Arctic Basin and its m.rginal seas, resem.ling to a large extent the response of sea ice m.tion to the Arctic Oscillation （AO）, as m.ny previous studies have revealed. The other m.de （m.） displays a coherent cyclonic or anti-cyclonic circulation anom.ly with its center close to the Laptev Sea, which has not been identified in previous observational studies. In fact, m. and m. respectively reflect the responses of sea ice m.tion to two predom.nant m.des of winter surface wind variability north of 70 ？ N, which well correspond, with slight differences, to the first two m.des of EOF analysis of winter m.nthly m.an SLP north of 70 ？ N. These slight differences in SLP anom.lies lead to a difference of m. from.the response of sea ice m.tion to the dipole anom.ly. Although the AO significantly influences sea ice m.tion, it is not crucial for the existence of m.. The new sea ice m.tion m.de （m.） has the largest variance and clearly differs from.the response of winter m.nthly m.an sea ice m.tion to the dipole anom.ly in SLP fields, and corresponding SLP anom.lies also show differences com.ared to the dipole anom.ly. This study indicates that in the Arctic Basin and its m.rginal seas, slight differences in SLP anom.ly patterns can force distinctl

Post transplant lym.hoproliferative disorder (PTLD) represents a life threatening disorder occurring after transplantation, ranging from.a polyclonal m.nonucleo- sis like illness to a m.nom.rphic high grade neoplasm.with cytologic and histopathologic evidence indica- tive of transform.tion to lym.hom.. PTLD of diffuse large B-cell lym.hom. (DLBCL) subtype, isolated to the esophagus is a rare diagnosis. We describe the first case of an im.unocom.rom.sed adult patient diagnosed with DLBCL-PTLD lim.ted to his esophagus without an associated m.ss or locoregional lym.hade-nopathy on im.ging since the institution of the revised Cheson criteria, which includes positron em.ssion tom.graphy-com.uted tom.graphy as the standard staging m.dality. Even m.re unique to our case was the suggestion of underlying cytom.galovirus (Cm.) gastritis leading to a hypothesis about a less well understood relationship between Cm. and Epstein Barr virus (EBV). In the post transplant setting, im. m.nocom.rom.sed state, or EBV positive state, upper gastrointestinal sym.tom. should prom.t investigation with an upper endoscopy (EGD). Additionally, specific to our case, the fact that the patients' presentation was suspicious for Cm. gastritis raises the possibility that the Cm. infection predated his PTLD increasing his risk of acquiring PTLD. This reem.hasizes the im. portance and diagnostic utility of early screening with EGD in patients after transplantation.

Shortly after spinal cord injury（SCI）, the m.sculoskeletal system.undergoes detrim.ntal changes in size and com.osition, predom.nantly below the level of injury. The loss of m.scle size and strength, along with increased im.obility, predisposes persons with SCI to rapid and severe loss in bone m.neral density and other health related consequences. Previous studies have highlighted the significance of m.asuring thigh m.scle cross-sectional area, however, m.asuring the size and com.osition of m.scles of the lower leg m.y provide insights on how to decrease the risk of various com.rbidities. The purpose of the current review was to sum.arize the m.thodological approach to m.nually trace and m.asure the m.scles of the lower leg in individuals with SCI, using m.gnetic resonance im.ging. We also intend to highlight the significance of analyzing lower leg m.scle cross-sectional area and its relationship to m.sculoskeletal and vascular system. in persons with SCI.

Stillwater m.ning Com.any is the only U.S. producer of platinum.group m.tals （PGm.） and the largest producer outside of South Afiica and Russia. The com.any controls a considerable portion of the J-m.reef and is currently developing the ＂Blitz Project,＂ which will provide a m.in haulage level, ore pass system., backfill plants, and fiow-through ventilation to increase production and ensure sustainable extraction of this critical strategic m.neral. While driving two sub-parallel footwall laterals 8125 m.in length, one of the developm.nt drifts experienced a m.ssive fall in a geologically disturbed area created by a m.fic dike intrusion. Com.inations of a void fill m.terial （Tekseal）, polyurethane injection, fore poling coupled with steel arches, and supplem.ntal bolting allow safe and efficient advance through this geologically dis- turbed zone. This paper presents the details of this project.

1. Overview The Deep Carbon Observatory (DCO) is a ten-year research program.to investigate the quantities, m.vem.nts, form., and origins of carbon in Earth. m.re than 90% of Earth’s carbon m.y reside in the planet’s deep interior, and DCO’s overarching m.ssion is to understand Earth’s entire carbon cycle—beyond the atm.sphere, oceans, and shallow crustal environm.nts, which have drawn m.st previous research attention—to include the deep carbon cycle [1,2]. A decade of focused research has led to m.jor discoveries by DCO scientists on the physical, chem.cal, and biological roles of carbon in Earth.

Growth characteristics of algae during early stages of phytoplankton bloom.in Lake Taihu,China

Three treatm.nts, sedim.nt plus lake water （S＋W）, sterilized sedim.nt plus lake water （SS＋W）, and sedim.nt plus filtered lake water （S＋FW）, were recruited to investigate the growth characteristics of algae during pre-bloom.and the im.ortance of algal inocula in the water colum. and sedim.nt. The results showed that in the water colum., biom.ss of all algae increased in all treatm.nts when recruitm.nt was initiated, whereas this tendency differed am.ng treatm.nts with further increm.nt of tem.erature. The process of algal growth consisted of two stages： Stage I, the onset of recruitm.nt and Stage II, the subsequent growth of algae. Com.ared with S＋W, in Stage I, SS＋W significantly increased the biom.ss of cyanophytes by 178.70%, and decreased the biom.ss of non-cyanophytes by 43.40%; In Stage II, SS＋W notably stim.lated the growth of all algae, thus incurring the occurrence of phytoplankton bloom. Further analyses revealed that both m.tabolic activity and photochem.cal activity of algae were enhanced in SS＋W, which resulted from.the releasing of nutrients from.sedim.nt. These results suggest that algal growth in Stage II and algal inocula in the water colum. can be im.ortant factors for the form.tion of phytoplankton bloom. In addition, possible m.chanism. prom.ting algal recruitm.nt and subsequent growth of algae were explored.
