Prim.ry hyperparathyroidism.(PHPT) is a relative com.on m.dical problem.caused by the inappropriate secretion of parathyroid horm.ne (PTH) by one or m.re parathyroid glands. The diagnosis is established by serum.calcium.and PTH levels and once the diagnosis is established im.ging studies help localize the hyperfunctioning adenom. in preparation for curative surgery. Until now, the im.ging studies m.st com.only utilized in PHPT are ultrasonography and 99m./sup>Tc-Sesta-m.thoxyisobutylisonitrile (m.BI) parathyroid scintigraphy. However, these studies often fail to localize the adenom. and inappropriately delay patient referral to a potentially curative surgery. We present the case of a 64-year-old fem.le with sym.tom.tic PHPT who had 3 negative 99m./sup>Tc-Sestam.bi Scans over a period of 5 years who eventually had a PET/CT with 11C-Choline that identified a right lower parathyroid adenom.. She underwent a right lower parathyroidectom. and had a successful outcom.. We present a review the current im.ging techniques used in the m.nagem.nt of PHPT including 99m./sup>Tc-Sesta-m.BI scintigraphy and its lim.tations and novel use of PET/CT with 11C-Choline and 18F-Choline in this disease and em.hasize the fact that, according to current guidelines, failure to localize the adenom. should not delay referral for curative surgery.

The study objective was to evaluate steer growth perform.nce, sera m.tabolite responses, carcass characteristics, and pulm.nary arterial pressure as affected by body weight at tim. of im.lantation and steroidal im.lant adm.nistration. Crossbred steers (n = 20) were used in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangem.nt of treatm.nts in a com.letely random.zed design experim.nt, Factors included: body weight: light (L), or heavy (H) and im.lant: Non-im.lanted (NoIm.), or Im.lanted (Im.) with steer serving as the experim.ntal unit for all analyses. Initial weights for L and H steers were 398 ± 27.6 and 547 ± 25.2 kg, respectively. Im.lanted steers received a term.nal im.lant (200 m. trenbolone acetate and 20 m. estradiol-17β;Revalor-200;m.rck Anim.l Health, m.dison, NJ) on d 0. Cattle within treatm.nts were group housed in com.on pens (n = 5 steers/pen). Bodyweight, blood sam.les, and pulm.nary arterial pressure were collected on d 0, 14, 35, 70 and 104. Cattle were fed a com.on diet once daily to provide ad libitum.access to feed. The finishing diet contained (Dm.basis) 13.3% CP, 2.13 m.al/kg NEm. and 1.45 m.al/kg NEg. Growth perform.nce (body weight and ADG) and carcass traits were analyzed using the m.XED procedure of SAS 9.4 (SAS Inst. Inc., Cary, NC). Sera m.tabolites were analyzed as repeated m.asures over tim., with day as the repeated m.asure. For all analyses, α level m.ned significance. Heavy steers consum.d 2.2 kg m.re per head of Dm.daily than L cattle and Im. steers consum.d 1.0 kg m.re Dm.daily than NoIm. steers. Cum.lative ADG did not differ between the L and H steers (1.41 vs. 1.52 ± 0.060 kg;P = 0.20). Horticultural Production of Ultra High Resveratrol Peanut

Background: Resveratrol naturally occurring antioxidant in peanut (Legum.: Arachis hypogaea) has phytochem.cal hum.n health dietary effects associated with reduced inflam.atory cancer risks. Its levels in peanut are ultra-low and variable (0 to 26 μg·g-1), which has m.de it difficult to m.rket as a consistent high resveratrol produce. Objective: Understanding the regulation of resveratrol accum.lation in peanut m.ght lead to developm.nt of new techniques for optim.zing and stabilizing its yield. m.thod: Peanuts were cultivated in horticultural field plots and treated with solutions of m.neral salts (sulfate, potassium. phosphate, am.onium.ion) that were optim.zed in stoichiom.tric (reactive) ratios. Peanut seed’s RNAs were subjected to Northern blot analysis for profiling the RNAs synthesized by glutam.te dehydrogenase (GDH), and m.NAs encoding resveratrol synthase. The seed’s extracts were analyzed by GC-m. for determ.nation of the resveratrol and fatty acid com.ositions. Result: Stoichiom.tric m.xes of m.neral ions induced the peanut GDH to synthesize som. RNA that silenced the m.NAs encoding resveratrol synthase, phosphoglucom.tase, isocitrate lyase, m.late synthase, enolase, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase, m.late dehydrogenase, and phosphoglycerate m.tase in the control, KN-, and NPKS-treated but not in the NPPK-treated peanut. These resulted to decreased resveratrol content (6.0 μg·g-1) in the control peanut but m.xim.zed it (1.15 m.·g-1) in the NPPK-treated peanut. Therefore, resveratrol accum.lation was optim.zed by coupling of glycolysis and citric-glyoxylic acid cycles to resveratrol biosynthesis. Fatty acid content of control (55.6 g·kg-1) was higher than the NPKS-treated (48.5 g·kg-1) and NPPK-treated peanut (44.9 g·kg-1) m.aning that m.lonyl-CoA interm.diate in both fatty acid and stilbenoid pathways was diverted to support m.xim.m.resveratrol biosynthesis in the NPPK-treated peanut. Nitrogen Fertilization and Inoculation Effects on Dry Bean

Dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) has the ability to form.sym.iotic relationships with N2-fixing bacteria. The research objectives were to evaluate yield and growth differences between dry bean cultivars from.black, navy, and pinto m.rket classes, with different N m.nagem.nt com.inations utilizing urea fertilizer, and two rhizobacteria inoculants. Research was conducted near Park River and Prosper, ND, during 2010, 2012, 2013. The experim.nt was a RCBD 3 × 2 × 3 factorial with four replicates with three dry bean cultivars, two N fertility levels, and two rhizobacteria inoculum.sources plus a non-inoculated treatm.nt. The pinto cultivar was also evaluated in 2014. Results showed significant cultivar m.in effect differences for nodules per plant, vigor, height, and 1000 seed weight. The pinto cultivar had significantly m.re nodules per root (19) com.ared with the black (13) and navy cultivars (9). There were not significant differences between inoculant treatm.nts. The fertilizer m.in effect indicated significant differences for vigor and 1000 seed weight. No significant interactions were detected am.ng factors. Addition of 56 kg N ha-1 resulted in m.re vigorous plants, but had no effect on seed yield, and reduced 1000 seed weight at harvest at Park River in 2013. Root nodule num.er was higher with the inoculant treatm.nts with 16.2 and 15.8 nodules per plant com.ared to the non-inoculated treatm.nt with 10.7 nodules per plant at Park River in 2013. The pinto variety Lariat with an application of 56 kg ha-1 had visually greener plants in 2013 and 2014, except Park River in 2013, but SPAD readings were not following the sam. trend. Inoculation and application of N fertilizer on dry bean m.y not be necessary if rhizobacteria are present and soil N levels are sufficiently high but future research on rates, tim.ng, and N source and appropriate strains of Rhizobia inoculant on other pinto varieties is suggested.

Use of Pearson’s Chi-Square for Testing Equality of Percentile Profiles across m.ltiple Populations

In large sam.le studies where distributions m.y be skewed and not readily transform.d to sym.etry, it m.y be of greater interest to com.are different distributions in term. of percentiles rather than m.ans. For exam.le, it m.y be m.re inform.tive to com.are two or m.re populations with respect to their within population distributions by testing the hypothesis that their corresponding respective 10th, 50th, and 90th percentiles are equal. As a generalization of the m.dian test, the proposed test statistic is asym.totically distributed as Chi-square with degrees of freedom.dependent upon the num.er of percentiles tested and constraints of the null hypothesis. Results from.sim.lation studies are used to validate the nom.nal 0.05 significance level under the null hypothesis, and asym.totic power properties that are suitable for testing equality of percentile profiles against selected profile discrepancies for a variety of underlying distributions. A pragm.tic exam.le is provided to illustrate the com.arison of the percentile profiles for four body m.ss index distributions.

The Im.act of Depressive Sym.tom. on Neuropsychological Perform.nce Tests in HIV-Infected Individuals: A Study of the Hawaii Aging with HIV Cohort

Background: The frequency of neurocognitive im.airm.nt (NCI) in hum.n im.unodeficiency virus (HIV) -infected individuals rem.ins high despite the availability of potent antiretroviral therapy (ART). The concurrence of depression am.ng HIV-infected patients with NCI is com.on, especially am.ng older individuals. Depression has been im.licated as a risk factor for im.aired neuropsychological perform.nce (NP). This study explored the relationship between depressive sym.tom. and NP testing in HIV-infected individuals. m.thods: A cross-sectional analysis was perform.d within the Hawaii Aging with HIV Cohort, a large prospective study of cognition of older (50 or m.re years old) com.ared to younger (20 to 39 years old) HIV-infected individuals. Results: Two hundred and eighty-five HIV infected participants (157 older and 128 younger) were adm.nistered a battery of NP tests to m.asure perform.nce in m.jor cognitive dom.ins. Depressive sym.tom. were m.asured using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The rates of depressive sym.tom. and neuropsychological im.airm.nt were sim.lar in older and younger groups. m.ltivariate analyses revealed depressive sym.tom. were associated with NP test im.airm.nt in the younger group. In the older group, depressive sym.tom. were not associated with NP. Conclusion: This study suggests that depressive sym.tom. are associated with NP test im.airm.nt in younger HIV-infected individuals, but not in older individuals.

Wetlands, one of the m.st productive system. in the biosphere are a unique ecosystem. They occur in landscapes that favor the ponding or slow runoff of surface water, discharge of ground water, or both. Wetlands are not only im.ortant for m.intaining plant and anim.l diversity, but also for balancing global carbon budget via sequestrating or releasing CO2 from.into atm.sphere depending on their m.nagem.nt. Therefore, it is im.erative to understand how wetlands form.and function, then we can better m.nage, utilize, and protect these unique ecosystem.. Hydrie soils,hydrophytic vegetation, and wetland hydrology are the three m.in param.ters of wetlands. These param.ters are interrelated with each other which jointly influence the developm.nt and functions of wetland ecosystem.. The objective of this paper was to report the current understanding of wetlands and provide future research directions. The paper will first focus on aspects of hydrology research in wetlands, and then shift to soil hydrosequence and wetland vegetation to better understand processes, structure, and function of wetlands, and conclude with som. possible future research directions.
