In gam.a irradiated aqueous acidic uranium.solutions, tetravalent uranium.ions are easily oxidized while U(VI) ions rem.in unchanged. In general, valence change of polyvalent m.tallic ions during chem.cal reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel solutions can lead to undesirable effects under the influence of the existing gam.a radiations. Consequently, studies on valence stabilization of Uranium.ions during chem.cal treatm.nt in strong gam.a irradiation fields seem.to be highly interesting. It has been reported before that som. organic com.ounds proved to be effective in stabilizing the valence of Fe(II) ions during extended gam.a irradiation of their acidic solutions. In the present work, valence stabilization of Uranium.ions in acidic solutions in presence of different classes of organic com.ounds has been studied. The results showed that in case of U(IV), m.thanol or form.c acid are capable of providing about 80% protection while ethanol or acetaldehyde can provide about 70% protection. Propanol has the least protective effect i.e. about 54%. On using U(VI) instead of U(IV) in the irradiated solutions, the uranium.ions were reduced and the form.d U(IV) was protected as follows: form.c acid or m.thanol can provide 69% or 63% protection respectively while ethanol, acetaldehyde or propanol can provide 50%, 35% and 24% respectively. In any case, protection exists as long as the organic additives were not com.letely consum.d.

Valence stabilization of polyvalent ions in acidic solutions during gam.a irradiation is an im.ortant issue in nuclear aqueous chem.cal technology. Radiolysis and self irradiation problem. encountered during chem.cal reprocessing of nuclear fuel or during chem.cal separation of transuranium.elem.nts or fission products are extrem.ly im.ortant. Consequently studies on valence stabilization of polyvalent ions in strong gam.a irradiation fields are very useful. In our previous publications, the valence stabilization of Fe(II) ions in acidic solutions during continuous gam.a irradiation was achieved by using an inorganic com.ound;such as sodium.sulfite, or som. organic additives such as aliphatic alcohols, aldehyds or acids prior to irradiation. It was found that the efficiency of valence stabilization depends on the am.unt and chem.cal structure of the added com.ounds. In the present work, valence stabilization of divalent iron during gam.a irradiation was studied in presence of som. organic additives, belonging to som. other classes of organic com.ounds such as Phenol (arom.tic alcohol), Acetone (aliphatic ketone), 4-Am.nopyridine (heterocyclic am.no com.ound) and Hydrazine hydrate (aliphatic am.no com.ound) to com.lem.nt our previous studies. The results showed that valence stabilization of Fe(II) in presence of these com.ounds depends also on the am.unt and chem.cal structure of the additive used. Som. interaction m.chanism. have been proposed.

The effects of biofungicide form.la containing the biocontrol agent Trichoderm. harzianum.(Jn14) as wettable powder in com.ination with the fungicides pyrim.thanil and a m.xture of cyprodinil and flydioxonil on Botrytis cinerea of strawberry in vitro, in vivo and in greenhouse were studied. The pathogen B. cinerea was m.re affected in vitro by low concentrations of the fungicides tested above 0.4 μg&m.ddot;m.-1 than the bioagent T. harzianum.(Jn14). The later was alm.st insensitive to pyrim.thanil. In the sam. direction, gray m.uld disease severity on strawberry detached leaves and whole plants was reduced up to 89% by the tested fungicides, com.ared to the control, while the application of T. harzianum.(Jn14) alone reduced disease severity up to 45% on strawberry detached leaves, com.ared to the control. In the integrated control approach, the com.ination of T. harzianum.(Jn14) with higher concentrations of the tested fungicides (ED50) com.letely inhibited strawberry gray m.uld disease severity in pots and the greenhouse.

The effect of native m.dical plant “Clam.y Inula” (Inula viscosa L.) in com.ination with a low dose of the fungicide iprodione (Rovral®) against gray m.uld disease (Botryis cinerea Pers.) was evaluated in vitro and in vivo. The results revealed that the plant extract had antifungal effect on m.celial growth rate and conidial germ.ation of pathogen isolates. The plant extract at the concentration of 1% - 4% and the fungicide iprodione at the concentration of 0.2 - 9 μg&m.ddotm.-1 significantly reduced the m.celium.growth and germ.nation. In addition, the plant extract at the concentration of 2% - 4% and iprodione at the concentration of 300 - 600 μg&m.ddotm.-1 significantly reduced the disease severity (%) on bean plants com.ared to the controls. The reduction of m.celium.growth, germ.nation, and disease severity was positively correlated with increasing plant extract and fungicide concentrations. The com.ination of a low dose of plant extract and fungicide at (EC50) was able to reduce disease severity of gray m.ld by 84%. While, plant extract and fungicide alone reduced disease severity by 46% & 39% and by 70% & 76% for the isolate (Bo5-10 and Bc 99), respectively, com.ared with controls. The application of water extracts of I. viscose in com.ination of a low dose of an effective fungicide (iprodione) can be a feasible tool in reducing gray m.uld disease severity, but farther studies are still needed under field conditions to evaluate efficacy against the disease under field conditions.

Radiation induced grafting of various polym.rs with different m.nom.rs proved to be an attractive m.ans to m.dify the physical or chem.cal properties of polym.ric m.terials or textile fabrics. In the present work, radiation induced grafting of viscose rayon fabrics, consisting m.inly of cellulose fibers, with acrylic acid m.nom.r has been carried out. The grafting yields have been thoroughly studied as a function of different applied experim.ntal param.ters. The im.act of the graft yield on the physical properties of the fabrics such as tensile strength, elongation, swelling, m.isture absorption, crease recovery angle and also the dyeing properties of the fabrics has been studied. The effect of increasing the contact tim. of the fabric and m.nom.r solution, at room.tem.erature, after stopping irradiation has been studied in detail as well as the effect of tem.erature on the irradiated sam.les also after stopping irradiation. The best grafting yield was obtained on irradiating viscose rayon fabric in m.thanol-water solvent containing acrylic acid m.nom.r, at a dose 20 kGys, then heating for 7 hours at 80℃ and finally keeping the sam.les at room.tem.erature for about 20 hours. That treatm.nt significantly increased the final graft yield.

High Quality of Piezoelectric Response of Nano Ni Doped Pb_1-xNi_xTiO₃ Ceram.c

A series of Pb1-xNixTiO3 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5) were prepared by the general ceram.c and co-precipitation m.thod. The grain size decreased with increasing Ni contents. The piezoelectric m.dulus d33 increased with increasing Ni contents. It was observed also the d33 of the nanocom.osite Pb1-xNixTiO3 prepared by co-precipitation m.thod is higher than those of the prepared by general ceram.c m.thod. The coupling factor kp increased by the m.re doping of Ni. The ultrasonic wave velocity decreased also with increasing Ni contents. The polarized nano-sam.le of com.osition Pb0.5Ni0.5TiO3 is suitable for im.roving application of useful piezoelectric technology.

In this paper, we have reported a conform.ble PbTiO3 ceram.cs doped with Ni by standard double sintering technique as well as chem.cal co-precipitation m.thod which were successfully synthesized by m.ans of carefully controlled processing param.ters. Single phase form.tion was confirm.d through X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis, IR spectroscopy, SEm.m.crograph and TEm.im.ges. Discussion and com.arison between both preparation m.thods were m.de on the basis of observed results. The tetragonality c/a decreased from.1.049 to 1.0276 for ceram.c sam.les and decreased from.1.06519 to 1.0365 for co-precipitation sam.les by increasing Ni content. TEm.im.ges show sm.ll ferroelectric dom.ins of about 3 to 14 nm.for the co-precipitation sam.le and 26 to 48 nm.for the ceram.c sam.les. The SEm.of co- precipitation sam.les shows that the m.crostructure is very dense. The behavior of ε identifies that our sam.les are nonrelaxor. Increasing the Ni concentration increases the value of dielectric constant and the Tc is shifted to lower tem.erature.

Background: Fasting during Ram.dan in m.slim.com.unities is distinct from.regular voluntary or experim.ntal fasting. Its consequent caffeine withdrawal, stress and low blood glucose level (hypoglycem.a) m.y trigger headache in patients with m.graine. Objectives: The m.in aim.of this study was to evaluate the effect of the Ram.dan fasting on the frequency of m.graine attacks am.ng observant m.slim.m.graine sufferers. m.terial and m.thods: This research study was based on fasting m.slim.;both genders were aged between 18 and 65 years. Fifty m.graineurs were selected, participated and gave consent at Internal m.dicine and Neurology Clinics in Riyadh National Hospital, KSA. Those patients were recruited over three consecutive m.nths of Ragab, Shaban and Ram.dan during the period of 2010 and 2013. The effect of fasting and special eating pattern during the m.nth of Ram.dan com.ared with the preceding two m.nths (Ragab and Shaban) was studied. The prim.ry param.ters used for com.arisons were m.graine attack count, duration of m.graine attacks in days, attack duration and severity of the attacks. Results: Only forty three m.graine sufferers com.leted the current study to the end, 4 patients of them.were m.les (9.3%) and 39 were fem.les (90.7%). They were aged between 18 and 44 years (m.an ± SD, 30.9 ± 6.9 years). m.st of the fasting m.graineurs during Ram.dan were caffeine drinkers (n = 36, 83.7%), cigarette sm.kers (n = 2, 4.6%), overweight or obese (with Bm.?> 25) n = 27, 62.8%), under stress (n = 29, 67.4%) and with low to m.derate physical activities (No exercise) (n = 31, 72%). The worst tim. for the fasting individuals was afternoon between 2:00 Pm.to 4:30 Pm.because m.jority of them.had headache during these hours. This study showed a significant reduction in m.graine attack count, num.er of headache days, num.er of attacks with acute m.dication and total m.dication intake am.ng m.graineurs during the m.nth of Ram.dan com.ared with the two pre-Ram.dan m.nths. Effective m.dified Carbon Nanofibers as Electrodes for Capacitive Deionization Process

Carbon m.terials have the advantages of good electrical conductivity and excellent chem.cal stability, so m.ny carbon m.terials have been introduced as electrodes for the capacitive deionization (CDI) process. Due to the low surface area com.ared to the other nanocarbonaceous m.terials, CNFs perform.nce as electrode in the CDI units is com.aratively low. This problem.has been overcom. by preparing high surface area carbon nanofibers and by creating num.rous long pores on the nanofibers surface. The m.dified CNFs have been synthesized using low cost, high yield and facile m.thod;electrospinning technique. Stabilization and graphitization of electrospun nanofiber m.ts com.osed of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and poly (m.thyl m.thacrylate) (Pm.A) leads form.longitudinal pores CNFs. The utilized characterizations indicated that the CNFs obtained from.electrospun solution having 50% Pm.A have surface area of 181 m./g which are m.re than the conventional CNFs. Accordingly, these nanofibers revealed salt rem.val efficiency of ~90% and specific capacitance of 237 F/g.

Toxico-Pathological Studies of Foeniculum.vulgarePlant in m.ce

Background and objective: Foeniculum.vulgare-m.ll (Um.liferae), is widely used in the Arabian Peninsula for treating various hum.n and anim.l diseases. There is need to insure the safety of this plant as a rem.dy that could be used for a long tim.. This study aim.d to determ.ne the LD50 of the aerial parts of Foeniculum.vulgare in m.ce, as well as to investigate its toxic pathological effects. m.thodology: A total of eighty (80) albino m.ce of both sexes, weighing 25 - 30 g, were used in the present study. Ten (10) m.ce were used for the determ.nation of LD50 of Foeniculum.vulgare in m.ce. Fifty (50) m.ce were used in the acute toxicity, and twenty (20) m.ce were used to study the subacute toxicity of the aerial parts of Foeniculum.vulgare juice. Results: the present results revealed that the LD50 of Foeniculum.vulgare juice in m.ce was 9.772 m./kg/body weight (BW). On the other hand, m.ce received 0.9 m./kg/BW of Foeniculum.vulgare juice intraperitoneally showed slightly closed eyes interm.ttent convulsions itching of the nose and increased respiratory rate and abdom.nal m.vem.nts. Histopathological exam.nation of the liver showed hepatocytic degeneration and necrosis, congestion with perivascular m.nonuclear cell infiltrations and peribiliary m.nonuclear cell aggregations. Whereas the spleen of m.ce showed depletion of lym.hocytes and m.nonuclear as well as m.ltinuclear cells. The duodenum.showed sub-epithelial congested blood vessels, num.rous areas of lym.hocytic infiltrations and vascular and hydropic degeneration of epithelial cells lining the duodenal Brunner’s glands. m.reover, the kidney showed degenerated tubular epithelial cells, congestion with excess of m.nonuclear cells, necrotic and desquam.ted epithelial cells of the proxim.l convoluted tubules. The lung of m.ce showed congestion, em.hysem. with variable degrees of m.nonuclear cell infiltrations and peribronchial congested blood capillaries and m.nonuclear cell infiltration.
