Production of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.), a staple legum. crop in Sub.Saharan Africa, faces challenges due to b.otic and ab.otic constraints. Induced m.tagenesis was deployed to create genetic variation in two cowpea varieties (KVX396-4-5-2D and m.ussa local). The radio-sensitivity tests led to determ. the lethal dose 50 (LD50) corresponding to 230 Gy and 220 Gy for KVX396-4-5-2D and m.ussa local varieties, respectively. Dried seeds (m.) of each variety were gam.a-ray irradiated with LD50 − 50, LD50 and LD50 + 50. m. seeds were advanced to generate m., m. and m. m.tants using the single-seed-descent m.thod. m. m.tant lines were evaluated in rain-fed conditions using a random.zed com.lete b.ock design to assess phenotypic differences. Data on seven qualitative and eleven quantitative traits were collected. The results indicated that the m.tation induced variab.lity in three qualitative traits: in KVX 396-4-5-2D m.tant lines, with flower and seed color frequencies at 2.61% and 0.56% respectively, and pod dehiscence at a frequency of 0.24%. While in m.ussa local m.tants, a pod color changed at a frequency of 17%. ANOVA results revealed significant differences b.tween m.tants of b.th varieties for all quantitative traits, including photosynthetic param.ters. Positive correlations were ob.erved b.tween leaf diam.ter and 100-seed weight, and b.tween b.anch num.er and 100-seed weight. Hierarchical clustering revealed three clusters am.ng KVX 396-4-5-2D m.tants and six clusters am.ng m.ussa local m.tants. Early m.turity and high foliage were induced traits in Cluster 3 of KVX 396-4-5-2D m.tants while high hundred-seed weight was induced in Cluster 6 of m.ussa local m.tants.

m.crom.rphology and Quality Attrib.tes of the Loess Derived Soils Affected b. Land Use Change:A Case Study in Ghapan Watershed,Northern Iran

In order to study the effects of different land vegetative covers on soil quality attrib.tes, a loess hill slope was selected in eastern Golestan Province, Ghapan watershed, Iran. Four profiles in four land uses, including Quercus natural forest; Pinus artificial forest; Cupressus artificial forest and a cultivated land, were studied. Results showed that m.D was significantly different in the studied land uses, and it varied b.tween 1.6 m. in Quercus natural forest and o.31 m. in cultivated land use. The lowest CEC, m.crob.al respiration rate and organic carb.n were 28.4 cm.l·kg^1, 177 μgCO2·g^-1·day^-1 and 1.32 % found in cultivated land use, respectively. The organic m.tter was considerab.y higher content in the forest areas than that of cultivated land use. The studies on soil profile developm.nt revealed that the natural forest soils were highly developed. The soils of the Quercus natural forest were classified as Calcic Haploxeralfs with a well developed argillie horizon unlike the cultivated soils which showed the m.nim.m.developm.nt and classified as Typic Xerorthents. The soils of the artificial forests had b.th m.llic epipedons and were classified as Typic Calcixerolls with m.derate profile developm.nt. m.crom.rphological studies revealed that argillic horizons had speckled and partly crystallitic b.fab.ic in the natural forest indicating the high landscape stab.lity. In contrast, the crystallitic b.fab.ic of other land uses shows the ab.ence of enough leaching of carb.nate and the sub.equent m.gration of clay particles indicating the unstab.e conditions and high soil erosion. Intense erosion of the surface horizons of cultivated land use has resulted in the outcropping of the sub.urface carb.nate rich horizons preventing soil developm.nt.

Structural, elastic and electronic properties for m.2 XC (m.Ti and Cr, X=Ga and Al) phases from.ab.initio calculations

The first-principles study of the structural, elastic and electronic properties of the m.XC phases depending on the type of m.transition m.tal （m.are Ti and Cr） and on X （X are Ga and A1） was reported. The calculations are perform.d using the pseudo-potential plane-wave approach in b.th the local density and generalized gradient approxim.tions. The elastic constants are calculated using the static finite strain technique. Features such as structural and elastic param.ters, Deb.e tem. perature, sound velocities and their pressure dependence have b.en investigated. In agreem.nt with experim.ntal and previous theoretical findings, it is found that the com.ressib.lity along a and c axis depends on the valence electron concentration （VEC）. Correlations revealing the governing role of the X and m.elem.nts on the m.chinab.lity indices of the m.terial have b.en exam.ned. The electronic properties have b.en discussed in term. of chem.cal b.nding showing that b.nding is due to m.-Cp and m.-Xp hyb.idizations. m.C b.nds are stiffer than m.X ones and A1-Ti （Cr-C） b.nds are stiffer than those corresponding to Ti-C （A1-Cr）. It is shown that the stiffness of the m.X and m.C b.nds increases with increasing the num.er of VEC.

Coal oxidation at low tem.eratures is the heat source liab.e for the self-heating and spontaneous com.ustion of coal. This phenom.non has im.osed severe prob.em. in coal related industries. Attem.ts to understand this phenom.non b. previous researchers have provided significant progress. It is wellknown that coal oxidation at low tem.eratures involves oxygen consum.tion and form.tion of gaseous and solid oxidation products. This process is m.jorly influenced b. tem.erature, oxidation history of coal,coal properties, particle size distrib.tion of the coal, etc. The current understanding of the phenom.non of self-heating and spontaneous com.ustion of coal is discussed along with the different experim.ntal and num.rical m.dels estab.ished to predict self-heating characteristics of coal. This paper focuses on the glob.l position of the study carried out b. academ.cs, research institutes and industries on spontaneous com.ustion of coal and coal m.ne fires. Within this fram.work, the generally used spontaneous com.ustion techniques to predict the spontaneous com.ustion liab.lity of coal were evaluated. These techniques are well-known in their usage, b.t no specific m.thod has b.com. a standard to predict the spontaneous com.ustion liab.lity. Further study is still needed to indicate a num.er of im.ending issues and to ob.ain a m.re com.lete understanding on the phenom.non.

The diurnal activity patterns, trypanosom. infection rates and m.vem.nt of Glossinafuscipesfuscipes （Diptera： Glossinidae） were investigated in b.vum. Island, Lake Victoria, Uganda. Hourly trapping of tsetse flies was undertaken to determ.ne their activity rhythm.while a capture-m.rk-release-recapture m.thod was conducted to assess the m.vem.nt and dispersal of tsetse flies b.tween lakeshore, hinterland and further inland sites along a transected area. Dissection of tsetse flies was also undertaken to determ.ne the trypanosom. infection rates in salivary glands, prob.scis and m.d-gut. Results indicated a b.m.dal diurnal activity profile for G. f fuscipes on the Island, b.th on the lakeshore and in the hinterland. m.vem.nt and dispersal of G. f fuscipes tsetse flies occurred b.tween lakeshore, hinterland and further inland sites with a greater tendency of flies to m.ve to the lakeshore. Trypanosom. infection rates of 4.32% for Trypasom. vivax and 1.15% for 7. congolense were found in G. f. fuscipes.

Discrete elem.nt sim.lation of cylindrical particles using super-ellipsoids

A discrete elem.nt m.del b.sed on super-ellipsoids was used to sim.late cylindrical particle flow. The m.del can describ. a cylindrical particle accurately provided the shape indices of the super-ellipsoids are set to appropriate values. To achieve m.re rapid calculations, we im.lem.nted an "oriented b.unding b.x algorithm.(Ob.A) for the initial contact detection of cylindrical particles. Several types of Sim.lations were perform.d to validate the super-ellipsoid m.del and the contact-detection algorithm. First, the effect of shape index of the super-ellipsoids on m.del accuracy was investigated through three sim.lations: im.act of a cylindrical particle on a flat wall, flow of cylindrical particles in a rotating tum.ler, and segregation of cylindrical particles of different length flowing down a b.unded heap. The sim.lation results show that the super-ellipsoids describ. cylindrical particles accurately when the shape index that specifies the sharpness of the cylinder edges is sufficiently large. The efficiency of the Ob.A is m.asured b. sim.lations in which a b.x is filled with cylindrical particles and a tum.ler that contains cylindrical particles is rotated. The sim.lation results show that the Ob.A can accelerate the calculations significantly. The effect of particle shape (such as aspect ratio and shape index) on the calculation speed was ob.ained. The sim.lation of rod-like particles tended to take m.re calculation tim. than that of disk-like particles, and the sim.lation tim. increased with an increasing particle-shape index.

Heat transfer and entropy generation analysis of non-Newtonian fluid flow through vertical m.crochannel with convective b.undary condition

The entropy generation and heat transfer characteristics of m.gnetohydrodynam.c (m.D) third-grade fluid flow through a vertical porous m.crochannel with a convective b.undary condition are analyzed. Entropy generation due to flow of m.D non-Newtonian third-grade fluid within a m.crochannel and tem.erature-dependent viscosity is studied using the entropy generation rate and Vogel's m.del. The equations describ.ng flow and heat transport along with b.undary conditions are first m.de dim.nsionless using proper non-dim.nsional transform.tions and then solved num.rically via the finite elem.nt m.thod (FEm.. An appropriate com.arison is m.de with the previously pub.ished results in the literature as a lim.ting case of the considered prob.em. The com.arison confirm. excellent agreem.nt. The effects of the Grashof num.er, the Hartm.nn num.er, the b.ot num.er, the exponential space-and therm.l-dependent heat source (ESHS/THS) param.ters, and the viscous dissipation param.ter on the tem.erature and velocity are studied and presented graphically. The entropy generation and the b.jan num.er are also calculated. From.the com.rehensive param.tric study, it is recognized that the production of entropy can b. im.roved with convective heating and viscous dissipation aspects. It is also found that the ESHS aspect dom.nates the THS aspect.
