The com.lexity of m.lti-dim.nsional clim.te, environm.ntal and hum.n health inform.tion com.licates bringing together scientists, civil society, and decision m.kers to provide adequate m.tigation and adaptation options for the consequences of global environm.ntal change. To provide an effective pathway to conciliate (integrate) these datasets, we present PULSE-Brazil as the Platform.for Understanding Long-term.Sustainability of Ecosystem. and hum.n health. The overarching aim.of this paper is to focus on two study cases in the Brazilian state of Acre, 1) analyzing recent socio-environm.ntal disasters such as the im.acts of droughts and consequent increases in fire detections on the incidence of respiratory diseases, and 2) evaluating the im.acts of tem.erature increases in com.ination with rainfall seasonality upon the incidence of Dengue fever. Based on data available in PULSE-Brazil platform. we also aim.to provide insights on the consequences of future clim.te variability on ecosystem. and hum.n health. Finally, we provide a discussion on the collaborative process between scientists and policym.kers that defined the PULSE-Brazil platform.specifications and datasets and propose a conceptual pathway for prom.ting the interaction between science and policy during the process of producing a tool that allows the understating of clim.te-relate processes. Our results clearly dem.nstrated that ecosystem. are under increased fire risk in the future that will, in turn, affect the health of hum.n populations. m.reover, hum.ns are also exposed to critical Dengue fever outbreaks with the projected increase in m.nim.m.tem.eratures. Therefore, m.nim.zing the im.acts of these potentially ascending socio-environm.ntal problem. is the first step for adapting to a changing clim.te in the Am.zon region. We expect that PULSE-Brazil will serve not only as a technical tool for supporting governance, m.nagem.nt, m.tigation and long-term.adaptation plans for clim.te im.acts and natural d

The Association between Researchers’Conceptions of Research and Their Strategic Research Agendas

Purpose:In studies of the research process,the association between how researchers conceptualize research and their strategic research agendas has been largely *** study aim. to address this ***/m.thodology/approach:This study analyzes this relationship using a dataset of m.re than 8,500 researchers across all scientific fields and the *** studies the associations between the dim.nsions of two inventories:the Conceptions of Research Inventory(CoRI)and the m.lti-Dim.nsional Research Agenda Inventory—Revised(m.RAI-R).Findings:The findings show a relatively strong association between researchers’conceptions of research and their research *** all conceptions of research are positively related to scientific am.ition,the findings are m.xed regarding how the dim.nsions of the two inventories relate to one another,which is significant for those seeking to understand the knowledge production process *** lim.tations:The study relies on self-reported data,which always carries a risk of response *** im.lications:The findings provide a greater understanding of the inner workings of knowledge processes and indicate that the two inventories,whether used individually or in com.ination,m.y provide com.lem.ntary analytical perspectives to research perform.nce *** m.y thus offer im.ortant insights for m.nagers of research environm.nts regarding how to assess the research culture,beliefs,and conceptualizations of individual researchers and research team. when designing strategies to prom.te specific institutional research focuses and ***/value:To the best of the authors’knowledge,this is the first study to associate research agendas and conceptions of *** is based on a large sam.le of researchers working worldwide and in all fields of knowledge,which ensures that the findings have a reasonable degree of generalizability to the global population of researchers.

Cuba has been leading m.rine protected area(m.A)designation in the Caribbean region to ensure conservation of its valuable m.rine ***,an efficient m.nitoring program.for m.As is still to be im.lem.nted and will benefit from.pre-existing *** highly regulated m.A of Punta Francés National Park is one of the first Cuban m.As and was established m.inly to protect species and ecosystem. for tourism.*** of protection effects on com.ercial fish species was lacking in this *** study aim.d at increasing local scientific knowledge by providing a baseline study about the m.st com.ercially fished fam.lies(Haem.lidae,Lutjanidae and Serranidae)around Punta Francés *** collected represent only a lim.ted period but can be used as a base point to support future *** abundance in num.er and biom.ss,and size were collected to test for differences between inside and adjacent areas outside the Punta Francés m.A,in different coral reef *** m.in result of this study was the significantly larger size and biom.ss of snappers and groupers outside the m.A where intense fisheries *** observation consistent with a large spawning aggregation was also recorded outside the *** with a lim.ted set of data,these results suggest that,at least tem.orarily,the m.st targeted species[and sizes]are still highly vulnerable to *** habitats in the adjacent area,that are apparently m.ssing within the m.A,m.y support som. of the results *** the lim.ts of the Punta Francés m.A to include those habitats outside m.y be critical to ensure the effectiveness of this m.A in contributing to protect the m.st com.ercial species of the *** should be done together with efficient fisheries m.nagem.nt m.asures in the region,such as the significantly increase of m.nim.m.legal sizes and tem.oral closures during spawning m.grations.

This study com.ared three cryopreservation protocols on sperm.functions, IVF outcom.s, and em.ryo developm.nt. Epididym.l sperm.tozoa cryopreserved using slow-cooling （18% w/v raffinose, RS-C） were com.ared with sperm.tozoa vitrified using 0.25 m.sucrose （SV） or 18% w/v raffinose （RV）. The m.tility, vitality, and DNA dam.ge （TUNEL assay） of fresh control （FC） sperm.tozoa were com.ared with post-thawed or warm.d RS-C, RV, and SV sam.les. m.use oocytes （n = 267） were random.y assigned into three groups for insem.nation： RV （n = 102）, RS-C （n = 86）, and FC （n = 79）. The num.er and the proportion of two-cell em.ryos and blastocysts from.each treatm.nt were assessed. Sperm.m.tility （P 〈 0.01） and vitality （P 〈 0.05） were significantly reduced after vitrification com.ared with slow-cooled sperm.tozoa. However, DNA fragm.ntation was significantly reduced in sperm.tozoa vitrified using sucrose （15 - 1.8% [SV] vs 26 - 2.8% [RV] and 27 - 1.2% [RS-C]; P 〈 0.01）. Although the num.er of two-cell em.ryos produced by RS-C, RV, and FC sperm.tozoa was not significantly different, the num.er of blastocysts produced from.two-cell em.ryos using RV sperm.tozoa was significantly higher than FC sperm.tozoa （P = 0.0053）. This sim.le, sm.ll volum. vitrification protocol and standard insem.nation m.thod allows successful em.ryo production from.sm.ll num.ers of epididym.l sperm.tozoa and m.y be applied clinically to circum.ent the need for ICSI, which has the disadvantage of bypassing sperm.selection.

The perceptions of fishers towards the Arrábida m.rine Park,a m.rine protected area(m.A)in the west coast of Portugal,were studied through face-to-face interviews in two different m.m.nts of the m.A life ***'perceptions about the m.A and the im.act it had on the fishing activity over tim. were identified just before the full im.lem.ntation of the zoning and regulations of the m.nagem.nt plan and 10 years *** study aim.d to investigate fishers'knowledge,acceptance and perceptions about the m.A changed with tim.,if support for the m.A was linked to the im.act of the m.A on the fishing activity,and if fishers'perceptions about the im.act of the m.A on the fishing activity m.tch with local landings *** show that although knowledge about the m.rine park significantly im.roved over tim.,fishers'acceptance did not.A decrease on fishers'support was not substantial but *** such as the disagreem.nt with regulations reinforced concerns raised during the im.lem.ntation of the m.rine park,particularly in relation to the top-down decision-m.king,which com.m.nly confers m.nor participation,recognition and legitim.cy to ***,fisheries benefits were still not perceived by local fishers,though they are central for fishers'***,the perceived negative im.acts of the park seem.d to be m.re related to social aspects and individual interests than to im.acts on *** adequate m.nagem.nt,enforcem.nt and participation of local fishers is still possible and are advocated here as to contribute to the expected socioecological outcom.s and respective support,leading to the future successful perform.nce of the Arrábida m.rine *** fishers’perceptions towards an m.A over tim. is central and should be included on periodical socioecological m.nitoring and inform.an effective adaptive m.nagem.nt.

Transcriptom. analysis of the <i>Tityus serrulatus</i>scorpion venom.gland

The Tityus serrulatus scorpion is considered the m.st dangerous scorpion in Brazil and is responsible for several cases of hum.n envenom.tion annually. In this study, we perform.d transcriptom. profiling of the T. serrulatus venom.gland. In addition to transcripts with housekeeping functions, such as those related to protein synthesis, energy supply and structural processes, transcripts from.thirty-five fam.lies of venom.peptides or proteins were identified. These transcripts included three new com.lete sequences of toxins and m.re than a dozen putative venom.gland proteins/peptides. The venom.gland transcriptom. profile was verified by com.arison with the previously determ.ned proteom.c profile. In conclusion, this transcriptom. data provides novel insights into the putative m.chanism. underlying the venom.us character of T. serrulatus. The collected data of scorpion transcripts and proteins/peptides described herein m.y be an im.ortant resource for identifying candidate targets of m.lecular therapies and preventative m.asures.

Fam.lial am.loidotic polyneuropathy is an autosom.l dom.nant am.loidosis, characterized by the system.c deposition of am.loid with a particular involvem.nt of the peripheral nerves. The disease generally m.nifests as a severe sensory, m. tor and autonom.c neuropathy. Cardiom.opathy, nephropathy, vitreous opacities and carpal tunnel syndrom. m.y occur in a variable association with the neuropathy. Trophic derm.tological lesions are frequent in the m.re advanced stages of the disease. We exam.ned the skin of 142 patients. The cutaneous m.nifestations m.re frequently observed were: xerosis (81.6% ), seborrheic derm.titis (21.8% ), traum.tic and burn lesions (19.7% ), acne (18.3% ), neurotrophic ulcers (14% ) and onychom.cosis (10.5% ). Am.ng the hepatic transplanted patients (31% ), seborrheic derm.titis and acne were the m.st frequent diagnoses.

Relevant Aspects of Expert Interest in the Perception of the Facial Aesthetic Dam.ge

Forensic aesthetic facial dam.ge—AFD expert’s valuation is a concerning m.tter in court as expressively vary in between experts. In fact, differences can be quite significant suggesting exam.ners age, sex and professional qualification m.y influence this valuation. Aim.ng to offer a system.tic and m.re objective evaluation, som. m.thods for assessing AFD had been proposed lately. Known as Aesthetic Im.airm.nt Im.act Perception (AIPE), Cobo-Plana’s revised m.thodology (2010) was idealized to m.nim.ze the exam.ner’s subjectivity by m.ans of answering an ordered sequence of questions related to the specific dam.ge perception. This research aim. to access AFD perception differences (sim.lated cases) in between Lawyers, Heath professionals (Physicians and Dental surgeons) and general professionals (laypeople) under AIPE m.thodology in order to allow a better com.rehension of AFD when dealing with forensic expertise cases. Within Groups perceptions varied (p m.ortant” severity grade. Raters over 35 Years age scored higher AFD lesions, and rater’s sex (as an independent variable) did not express any significant difference in AFD scoring. The tendency of under-rating AFD lesions below very im.ortant severity grade was observed being a m.tter of m.jor concern considered their prevalence and the effective consequences involved to the victim. These results recom.end extra caution when perform.ng AFD evaluation and consequently expertise reports, claim.ng a m.re judicious analysis based on consolidated standards and suggest, exam.ners to be m.re perceptive to physical dam.ge evaluation in order to include social perceptions and reactions, m.inly, victim. feelings and constrains over their aesthetic loss.

The biological properties of therapeutic peptides,such as their pharm.cokinetics and pharm.codynam.cs,are correlated with their structure and aggregation ***,we studied the aggregation properties of a therapeutic peptide(CIGB-814),currently in phase 2 clinical trial,for the treatm.nt of rheum.toid arthritis over a wide range of concentrations(μm.m.).We applied spectroscopic techniques(fluorescence,circular dichro-ism.resonance,and dynam.c light scattering),atom.c force m.croscopy,and m.lecular dynam.cs sim.lations to determ.ne the aggregation m.chanism.of *** found that the hierarchical aggregation of CIGB-814 at m.crom.lar concentrations was initiated by the form.tion of peptide ***,the peptide oligom.rs trigger the nucleation and growth of peptide nanostructures(cac=123μm.,ultim.tely leading to the fibrillization of CIGB-814(cac’=508μm..These results pave the way for a deeper understanding of the CIGB-814 therapeutic activity and m.y give im.ortant insights on its pharm.cokinetics.
