HIV Infection am.ng Newly Diagnosed TB Patients in Southwestern Nigeria: A m.lti-DOTS Center Study

Backgroud: The burden of TB and HIV infection is estim.ted to be about 512/100,000 and 3,000,000 people respectively. However, accurate data on TB/HIV co-m.rbidity in different parts of Nigeria were not available due to lim.ted access to HIV Counseling and Testing (HCT) by individuals with TB infection. This study was designed to determ.ne the true rate of HIV infection am.ng newly diagnosed TB patients by providing com.rehensive HCT services in 43 DOTS centers in Oyo State, Southwestern Nigeria. m.thods: All patients m.eting the case definition for TB suspects who presented at each of the 43 DOTS Centres were counselled and those who consented tested for presence of HIV antibodies using HIV 1/2 Determ.ne, Unigold and Stat-Pak rapid test kits in a serial algorithm. Results: A total of 13,109 TB positive patients were enrolled for the study, out of which 1605 (12.3%) tested positive for HIV antibodies. HIV infection was higher am.ng fem.le (15.5%) than m.le (9.5%) TB patients (p 0.05). The rates also varied am.ng the age groups, ranging from.4.3% in the 10 - 19 years to 18.0% in the 40 - 49 years age group. A relatively high rate (10.5%) of HIV infection was found am.ng children less than ten years of age. Conclusion: The results of this work show the true burden of TB/HIV in any region in Nigeria for the first tim.. Higher rate of TB/HIV co-infection am.ng fem.le patients and children are significant and im.ortant factors that should be considered in the planning of intervention m.asures in Nigeria and other TB and HIV endem.c countries in Africa.

Gastric cancer rem.ins a global killer with a shifting burden from.the developed to the developing world. The cancer develops along a m.ltistage process that is defined by distinct histological and pathophysiological phases. Several genetic and epigenetic alterations m.diate the transition from.one stage to another and these include m.tations in oncogenes, tum.ur suppressor genes and cell cycle and m.sm.tch repair genes. The m.st significant advance in the fight against gastric caner cam. with the recognition of the role of Helicobacter pylori （H pylori） as the m.st im.ortant acquired aetiological agent for this cancer. Recent work has focussed on elucidating the com.lex host/m.crobial interactions that underlie the neoplastic process. There is now considerable insight into the pathogenesis of this cancer and the prospect of preventing and eradicating the disease has becom. a reality. Perhaps m.re im.ortantly, the study of H pylori-induced gastric carcinogenesis offers a paradigm.for understanding m.re com.lex hum.n cancers. In this review, we exam.ne the m.lecular and cellular events that underlie Hpyloriinduced gastric cancer.

信息素是生物体向外释放的化学物质,在细胞及生物体中具有种内信息传递的生理学功能。信息素这一类分子广泛分布于系统发生史中,它们的特异活性在单细胞生物、昆虫以及脊椎动物中均有报道。脊椎动物中信息素的信号传输已被证实是一嗅觉依赖过程,7Tm.受体被认为是信号传输过程中的信号转换器。在低等单细胞生物(例如:来可夫游仆虫)的细胞膜上存在有信息素异构体,作为信息素分子的有效结合位点而行使其功能。本研究主要探讨单细胞的信息素(Er-1和Er-2)的基础细胞生理学作用是仅限于产生该信息素的物种,还是对其它的原生动物(例如:四膜虫)或对系统发育中分类地位较高的细胞(例如:m.C5成纤维细胞或J774巨噬细胞)均具有调节活性。研究结果表明,游仆虫的两种信息素对梨形四膜虫GL的生长调节有显著不同的作用:当信息素浓度为10-11m.,Er-1具有正调控作用,而Er-2具有抑制剂的作用。这两种配体的趋化作用也有很不同:Er-1具有一种广范的化学排斥特性,而Er-2具有一个双峰的化学吸引剂的性质。计算机检测发现,与Er-2的作用不同,Er-1可略微降低被测细胞的游动速率。趋化现象的选择特性表明Er-2信息素的受体有一种“短期”的特性;而Er-1是不能选择任何亚种群的,这也支持了我们先前的研究数据,即这两种信息素在四膜虫GL内产生两种不同的信号。四膜虫对信息素特异性的反应表明四膜虫能辨别非常近似但带有微小差异的配体(如Er-1和Er-2的电荷差异)。

Aim. This study was designed to determ.ne the prevalence of HBV, HCV and HIV infections am.ng individuals with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) in Ibadan, southwestern Nigeria. m.thodology: In this case-control study, 1017 patients with SCD and 1017 age and gender m.tched controls were enrolled from.6 health facilities and som. com.unities in Ibadan, southwestern Nigeria. Blood sam.les were tested for the presence of HIV, HBV and HCV infections. Structured questionnaire was used to capture participants’ inform.tion and data analyzed using descriptive statistics, m.Nem.r Chi-square/Fishers exact test. Results: Blood transfusion was significantly m.re com.on am.ng SCD cases [566 (55.7%)] than controls [54 (5.3%)], while history of vaccination was higher in the control group (p = 0.001). The overall prevalence of HIV [2 (0.2%) vs 11 (1.1%)], HBV [58 (5.7) vs 66 (6.5%)] and HCV [10 (1.0) vs 22 (2.2%)] was lower am.ng SCD cases than controls, respectively, although significantly different only in HCV infection (p = 0.048). All three infections were significantly higher in adults than in children. Co-infection was found only in four of the participants, all of whom.were SCD patients. Conclusion: The prevalence of HIV, HBV and HCV infection am.ng SCD patients indicates an im.rovem.nt in the transfusion safety m.asures in the region. The prevalence of HBV and HCV found in this study is still relatively high when com.ared with reports from.som. other regions. There is a need for continued surveillance and subsidized cost of drugs for treatm.nt of these infections, especially for SCD patients who already have a com.rom.sed im.unity.

Objectives： We analyzed polyphenol and antioxidant capacity in red wines m.lbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tannat and Syrah varieties from.wineries Calchaquies Valleys, in Salta, Argentine. m.thods： The total polyphenols was determ.ned by UV absorption at 280 nm.evaluating the D280 index. The antioxidant capacity was analyzed by absorbance m.asured at 520 nm.and 420 nm.and the color intensity and the hue was calculated by its sum.ation by its relation. Key findings： The results presented indexes D280 （phenolic content） that ranged from.43.3 to 55.7. The antioxidant capacity is evaluate by the color intensity of red wines m.asuring absorbance values at 420 and 520 nm.that ranged from.0.60 to 1.09. There is correlation between phenolic content and antioxidant capacity with a correlation coefficient of 0.974. Conclusions： The total polyphenol content in red wines is correlated with their antioxidant capacity. It is beneficial to health if the wine is consum.d in low quantities. The Cabernet Sauvignon variety has m.re phenolic content than m.lbec, Tannat and Syrah varieties.

A review of natural resources existing in m.xico is done. The description of the renewable energies for electricity generation operating at date along the country, includes hydro, wind, solar, biom.ss and geotherm.l, am.ng others. The installed capacity (to 2012) in m.xico for electric generation from.renewable energies is equivalent to 22% of total generation capacity. m.xico has geotherm.l resources, which can be classified as high and low enthalpy, and of hot dry rock. To date, the exploitation has focused m.inly on high enthalpy geotherm.l fields. Geotherm.l power plants do not burn fuel, preventing gas em.ssions helping to reduce global warm.ng and greenhouse effect. Security risks in m.xico geotherm.l fields, as a part of renewable energies linked to Sm.rt Grids, are described em.hasizing their geographical locations to facilitate the exposure to dangerous events. The results about research on m.xican Official Norm. protecting environm.nt related with geotherm.l operation projects are shown. The m.xican geotherm.l projects have developed under rules that provide security to workers and people, avoiding im.acts on the environm.nt. However, it was found that it necessarily em.hasized previsions to dam.ges and rem.dial actions for grids due to risks by natural contingencies (cyclones, winds, earthquakes) and by artificial causes such as vandalism.(grids breaking, fire, explosions, etc.). Unfortunately, there are no preventive norm. against natural risks. After all the analyses carried out, security m.st be considered by nature a dynam.c and ever-changing process.

Background: The developm.nt of anitiretroviral drug resistance m.y lim.t the benefit of antiretroviral therapy. Therefore the need to closely m.nitor these m.tations, especially the use of ART is increasing. This study was therefore designed to determ.ne the ARV drug resistance pattern am.ng ART na?ve and expose individuals attending a PEPFAR supported by antiretroviral clinic in Nigeria. m.thodology: The study participants included patients attending the PEPFAR supported by University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan ART clinic who have been on HIV treatm.nt for at least one year with consecutive viral load of over 2000 copies/m. as well som. ART Na?ve individuals with high (>50,000 copies/m.) baseline viral level attending the hospital for pre-ART assessm.nt. Blood sam.le was collected from.each individual for CD4 enum.ration, viral load level determ.nation and DNA sequencing for genotypic typing. Antiretroviral drug resistance m.tations (DRm. were determ.ned by using the Viroseq software and drug m.tations generated by using a com.ination of Viroseq and Stanford algorithm. DRm.were classified as m.jor or m.nor m.tations based on the June 2013 Stanford DR database. Results: The m.st com.on m.jor NRTI, NNRTI and PI m.tation were D67N (33.3%), Y181C (16.7%) and m.6L/I (55.6%) respectively. Lam.vudine (3TC) and em.ricitabine (FTC);nevirapine (NVP) and nelfinavir (NFV) were the m.st com.on NRTI, NNRTI, and PI drugs to which the virus in the infected individuals developed resistance. Isolates from.4 patients were resistant to triple drug class, including at least one NRTI, NNRTI and a PI. Only one (4.8%) of the isolates from.drug Na?ve individuals had m.jor DRm.that conferred resistance to any drug. Conclusion: Dem.nstration of high rates of antiretroviral DRm.am.ng patients on 1st and 2nd line ART and the presence of DRm.in drug Na?ve individuals in this study show the im.ortance of surveillance for resistance to ARV in line with the m.gnitude of scaling up of treatm.nt
