The aim.of this study was to characterize the polyphenolic com.osition by determ.nation of chem.cal fingerprints of m.thanolic extracts of Ocim.m.canum.Sim., Ocim.m.basilicum.L. and Ocim.m.gratissim.m.L. from.Dem.cratic Republic of Congo and to com.are their antisickling activity of that of rosm.rinic acid, the m.jor com.ound to those of m.thanolic extracts. Phytochem.cal analysis perform.d by TLC and HPLC analysis, showed that rosm.rinic acid is the m.st abundant phenolic acid in these Ocim.m.species according to the following order O. basilicum.L., O. gratissim.m.L. and O. canum.Sim.. m.thanolic extracts of these three species and pure rosm.rinic acid showed significant antisickling activities with m.nim.l concentration of norm.lization values of 0.18 ± 0.03, 0.23 ± 0.04, 0.26 ± 0.04 and 0.31 ± 0.05 m./m. for rosm.rinic acid, O. basilicum.L., O. gratissim.m.L. and O. canum.Sim. m.thanolic extracts respectively. The antisickling activity order is the sam. as that of the rosm.rinic acid content, indicating that this polyphenolic acid would be am.ng the m.in active m.lecules in these extracts.
